Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals usually face a greater challenge to learn to write than their normal-hearing counterparts, because sign language is the primary communicative skills for many deaf people. The current body of research only covers the detailed linguistic features of deaf or hard-of-hearing students. Due to the limitations of traditional research methods focusing on microscopic linguistic features, a holistic characterization of the writing linguistic features of these language users is lacking. This study attempts to fill this gap by adopting the methodology of linguistic complex networks. Two syntactic dependency networks in order to compare the macroscopic linguistic features of deaf or hard-of-hearing students and those of their normal-hearing peers. One is transformed from a treebank of writing produced by Chinese deaf or hard-of-hearing students, and the other from a treebank of writing produced by their Chinese normal-hearing counterparts. It was the observation that independent reading skills were very much better in the class where one teacher took a faster approach, introducing sounding and blending much earlier, that led us to study synthetic phonics. In our second study, carried out in 1995, children learning by the normal classroom analytic phonics approach received extra phonics tuition for 10 weeks in small groups outside the classroom, having two 15 minute sessions a week (Johnston and Watson, 2004). One group of children learnt by the synthetic phonics approach, learning letter sounds at the pace of two a week. A second group also learnt two letter sounds a week, following an analytic phonics programme. As this was the first term of school, these letters were learnt at the beginning of words. In the third group, the children received the same new print word exposure as the other two groups, but had no phonics teaching additional to the classroom analytic phonics programme. However, about 90 percent of hearing-impaired students are attending institutions outside Gallaudet or NTID, what is needed is knowledge about the conditions for the deaf and hard-of-hearing students in mainstreamed colleges and universities. From what is known about the changes regarding labor market, demography, and educational system the lack of knowledge about deaf and hard-of-hearing students in this setting seems serious. The research task should be to find the social mechanisms that underlie the educational process in terms of integration and attrition. This paper examines the meaning of plurality and diversity with respect to deaf childrens sign and spoken language exposure and repertoire within a super diverse context. Data is drawn from a small-scale project that took place in the North of England in a Local Authority (LA) site for deaf education. The project documented the language landscape of this site and gathered five individual case studies of deaf children to examine their plural and diverse language practices at home and at school. Analysis of the language landscape and case studies from this context is undertaken in order to define and exemplify deaf childrens language plurality and diversity in terms of context and individual experience. Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children are more at risk for language and reading difficulties than hearing children. Because early language development is an important factor in later reading success, it is important to promote this development as early as possible through activities aimed at emergent literacy skills. Promoting reading development is one of the main goals in deaf education, but it seems important to work on the foundations of reading in a much earlier stage. Parents and preschool teachers can play an important role in promoting emergent literacy in the preschool period. This chapter discusses what emergent literacy entails, how it relates to later reading success, and what we know from the literature on emergent literacy in children with hearing loss. Strategies for interactive book reading with DHH children are presented, and the potentials of technology for interactive reading with DHH children are discussed.

Description: Dual-immersion is a bilingual education method offered that places English as a first language (EFL) and English language learner (ELL) students in the same classroom to learn two languages at the same time. This study examines whether second language acquisition through dual-immersion supports literacy for both ELL and EFLS children over time. Students scores on standardized tests (ITBS, TAKS, Logramos, Stanford 9, and Aprenda) were studied to assess the impact, if any, of dual-immersion instruction vs. regular/bilingual education on reading development. Scores from 2000 through 2004 were gathered and analyzed for students enrolled in a dual-immersion class which started in kindergarten in 2000. The objective of the study was to identify and evaluate a methodology of market segmentation analysis for use in postsecondary education institution enrollment management. Two approaches to segmentation were examined: A priori and post hoc., The a priori approach was based on subjects intent to enroll at one of five types of schools, colleges or universities. The post hoc approach grouped subjects on a basis of their similarities on attributes desired at the schools at which they planned to enroll. Methodology for developing descriptive profiles of segments and for predicting membership in segments was then evaluated.
