Background: Although crucial, research on nurses knowledge on the use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) is scant. The aims of the study were to investigate (i) the level of nurses knowledge on care of patients with ICDs, (ii) whether knowledge level is related to education and type of hospital where nurses practice and (iii) whether knowledge level changes among nurses over time.. Methods: We developed a questionnaire comprising 27 items in four parts: (1) Sociodemographics, (2) Technical facts about ICDs, (3) Daily life challenges and (4) Self-evaluation of knowledge. After validation, surveys were conducted during 1-week cardiac educational courses in 2003-2010. In total, 463 nurses working in cardiology-related areas participated, yielding a response rate of 91%.. Results: Practical and technical knowledge about ICDs was lacking. Nurses were unaware or did not know that mobile phones can affect the device (80%), that patients are restricted from driving heavy vehicles (69%), ...
Objectives:To assess nurses knowledge and practices toward children with nephrotic syndrome (NS) they are working in nephrology units and to find out the relationships between nurses knowledge and practices and their demographic data such as (nurses age , nurses gender , nurses level of education , years of experiences in nursing field and other variables).
Results 13 of 36 questionnaires were returned. Those with patients on the LCP now completed the DNA-CPR form unless there were difficult dynamics. All completed it for any patient requesting DNA-CPR and 77% completed it with some patients for whom there was no chance of success from CPR. Where such patients or relatives were not in agreement the nurse sought involvement of a doctor. All nurses felt more confident to discuss the topic of CPR and much more confident in discussing a DNA-CPR decision for a dying patient (informing not asking), and in dealing with the reactions. Only one nurse reported more difficulties, arising with GPs who were less confident. None of the nurses had had their signature queried by a colleague or relative and many GPs were appreciative of this role. Only two nurses wanted formal assessment of their competence. Some considered assessment to add value if it enhanced the confidence of others in them. 55% wanted on-going CPD, considering this more likely than ...

Proper staff training in the shelter is a necessity for both newcomers and seasoned workers in order to ensure humane animal care as well as public and staff safety-but how do you provide the needed resources for your staff?
Substantial changes in public elderly care in Sweden have been resulting in a standing need of updating staff competence to match the new demands and maintain quality. Since the ability to learn is of importance when confronting changing conditions, organizations in general, as well as the authorities responsible for elderly care, invest large amounts of resources in learning in the workplace. However, the success of such investments depends on the interactions among numerous individual and organizational factors.. This thesis has aimed at increasing our understanding of the process and consequences of the learning intervention Steps for Skills in the context of elderly care, by addressing three specific research aims. The first aim focused on the psychosocial environment as a precondition for learning. The perceived learning climate was addressed in Study 1, and correlations were found between leaders and employees perceived learning climate and, to some extent, between employees perceived ...

Today I am reflecting on the power of culture. More than that, I am reflecting on the power of role models as drivers of the culture in our learning climates. I am so happy to be a clinician educator in an era that promotes feeling and acknowledging that being tired and overworked is no excuse for being unprofessional. Id like to think that our culture has evolved to something more empathic than walking up to the bedside of a twelve year old with a chemically decimated esophagus and who is fighting for his life, closing the door so his mom cant hear and saying, "Gutcheck!" (Bah-dump-bump ...

Ionizing radiation is used extensively in the field of medicine for either diagnosis or treatment. Hence, an understanding of radiation safety principles and how to apply them in practice is critical for nursing practice. The study was performed to assess nurses knowledge of ionizing radiation and radiation protection during mobile radiodiagnostic examination. A quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional survey was employed for this study to provide better means of investigating and assessing the knowledge, misconceptions and perceptions among 43 nurses assigned to clinical rotations in selected wards of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital regarding ionizing radiation and its radiation protection. A purposive sampling method using self-administered questionnaires was used to obtain data in respect of the study. The obtained data was analyzed using SPSS version 16.0. Out of the population of 43 nurses, 25.6% (n=11) were of the view that objects in the X-ray room emitted radiation after an x-ray ...
BACKGROUND: Adherence to guidelines to avoid complications associated with mechanical ventilation is often incomplete. The goal of this study was to assess whether staff training in pre-defined interventions (bundle) improves the quality of care in mechanically ventilated patients.. METHODS: This study was performed on a 50-bed intensive care unit of a tertiary care university hospital. Application of a ventilator bundle consisting of semirecumbent positioning, lung protective ventilation in patients with acute lung injury (ALI), ulcer prophylaxis, and deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis (DVTP) was assessed before and after staff training in post-surgical patients requiring mechanical ventilation for at least 24 h.. RESULTS: A total of 133 patients before and 141 patients after staff training were included. Overall bundle adherence increased from 15 to 33.8% (P,0.001). Semirecumbent position was achieved in 24.9% of patient days before and 46.9% of patient days after staff training (P,0.001). ...

This study was comprised of two phases. In Phase One an intense literature review was performed to facilitate item generation for the initial item-pool. This was then subjected to a review by a panel of experts to establish content validity. Phase Two involved the actual testing of the content validated item pool amongst a sample of ICU nurses from the target population. Ethical approval was obtained from the relevant hospitals. Classical Test Theory was implemented for psychometric evaluation of the instrument. Reliability of the instrument was addressed through the technique of test-retest reliability using Pearsons product-moment correlation coefficient and the Intra-Class correlation coefficient. Finally, the internal consistency of the instrument was addressed to examine the tools stability ...

These findings demonstrate that an interactive online nursing educational module can be an effective strategy for reducing insulin administration errors in hospitalized pediatric patients. Multiple studies have found deficits in nurses knowledge regarding diabetes (9-11), suggesting that additional education about diabetes is needed in order for nurses to provide safe and effective care to these patients. Consistent with Phillips (12) recommendation that educational modules provide frequent feedback to learners, our module used a self-paced technological medium that provided active learning, problem solving, and immediate feedback to the nurses. Strategies that enhanced implementation included engaging hospital administration support from the beginning of the study; recruiting nursing unit champions who took ownership of the performance improvement initiative at the unit level and acted as an educational resource for the nursing staff; and requiring that all nurses view the module.. Study ...

The first stage is sharing values, a time when nurse and organisation share similar values. The second stage is conceding values where, due to changes in the organisations values, nurses perceive that patient care becomes compromised and values diverge between the nurse and the hospital. The final stage, in which the nurse eventually resigns, is where nurses give up and feel that they compromise their professional integrity, that their values are conflicted, and that they are unable to realign their values to those of hospitals ...
