As an ethnic minority region in southwest China, 82% of the 51.59 million inhabitants of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (hereafter abbreviated as Guangxi) live in rural areas [1]. The ratio of physicians and nurses per 100,000 inhabitants in rural Guangxi is 40 and 38, respectively. In order to improve the competency of medical professionals currently working in township health centers (THCs), many continuing medical education (CME) programs have been implemented in Guangxi [2,3]. Access to CME is considered to be an essential issue for rural health professionals due to their broad scope of clinical practice and career isolation. However, the majority of CME programs are based on the concept of institutionally oriented planning, which is dictated by the interests of the organization rather than the needs of learners. In 2004, the Chinese Ministry of Health issued a regulation entitled Training regulations for health personnel in township health centers. This regulation specified ...

Dementia is under-diagnosed in primary care. Timely diagnosis and care management improve outcomes for patients and caregivers. This research evaluated the effectiveness of a nationwide Continuing Medical Education (CME) program to enhance dementia-related awareness, practice, knowledge and confidence of general practitioners (GPs) in Australia. Data were collected from self-report surveys by GPs who participated in an accredited CME program face-to-face or online; program evaluations from GPs; and process evaluations from workshop facilitators. CME participants completed surveys at one or more time-points (pre-, post-program, six to 9 months follow-up) between 2015 and 2017. Paired samples t-test was used to determine difference in mean outcome scores (self-reported change in awareness, knowledge, confidence, practice) between time-points. Multivariable regression analyses were used to investigate associations between respondent characteristics and key variables. Qualitative feedback was analysed

In all peer-reviewed scientific papers, editors require a discussion of the limitations of the research. Especially in the political football of CME research, such a discussion is crucial. For example, past surveys have shown that when doctors are asked for their opinions about commercial funding, those who are surveyed after attending an unsponsored course are against industry CME, while those surveyed after an industry-sponsored course support industry funding (Mueller, P. S., Hook, C. C., & Litin, S. C. (2007). Physician preferences and attitudes regarding industry support of CME programs. The American Journal of Medicine, 120(3), 281-285.) This is intuitive: if you give doctors the gift of a meal and a day of free education, then you ask them if they would they would like to receive such gifts in the future, they are likely to say yes. And if you decide to include only these doctors in your survey, you will probably receive an overwhelming response in support of industry-sponsored CME. But ...
