Dr Peter Yeates (Clinical Lecturer in Medical Education, Keele University), Dr Rebecca Farrington (Senior lecturer in Community Based Medical Education at Manchester Medical School), Dr Rebecca Baron (Associate Director GP for HEE (North West)) Dr Adam Firth (GP trainer and ST3 teaching lead), Geraldine Murphy (GPST4) and Emma Morris (GPST1) This workshop will provide a panel of experts involved in Medical Education research and delivery. We aim to answer your questions on how to get involved in teaching and training at an Undergraduate and Postgraduate level and how pursue an academic career in Medical Education. Peter Yeates started his academic career as a teaching fellow in 2005 in Northumberland, just after membership exams. He then moved to Manchester to take up an ACF in medical education and started speciality training. He was supported by departmental funding to do a PhD between 2009-12, and then in 2013 obtained an NIHR-matched clinical lectureship during which he completed his ...
There are a number of opportunities for faculty members to learn about medical education scholarship, such as the Association of American Medical Colleges Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC). In these three-hour workshops, participants learn the basics of medical education scholarship; however, these courses are not offered internationally - only in the United States at various conferences. The Harvard Macy program is a very well-known and respected program, but again it requires travel to the United States and is quite expensive. There are masters in medical education at numerous schools around the globe. These are an excellent place for training; however, they usually require a two-year time commitment and often require some in-person courses.. The Teaching Scholars Program - International provides world class training by highly experienced faculty members at a competitive price without the added expense of travel to North America. The program has flexibility built into the program ...
We are very pleased to be able to offer opportunities to highly motivated students interested in completing a clinical elective in a developing country.. In addition to completing the application form and the indemnification statement, we request that you also provide an updated CV. The application must also be signed by your academic advisor to ensure that you have met all necessary academic requirements.. All of these clinical electives are subsidized from one of several endowed travel fellowships from generous alumni and friends of the school to support students on international electives. These fellowships cover medical pre-trip evaluations and immunizations, air travel and some living expenses; however these stipends may not cover all of your expenses during the clinical elective. You should also be aware that if you choose to add personal time and travel on either side of the elective we can not be responsible if the elective dates must be changed.. Please note that each site has different ...
As an OR RN I can say that some of the most awe inspiring intelligent physicians I have worked with have been general surgeons, anethesiologists, and neurosurgeons. I have benefited from what some may say was useless knowledge, as they could have done these surgeries no doubt without having known the information. However, I believe they were able to provide better clinical care and education to the patient by having a good grasp of the anatomy, physiology, pathology of the disease processes and organs. And while the anesthesiologist may not be operating, they need to know how those surgeries will affect the body, down to levels I can only imagine was taught in an advanced anatomy physiology class. I take issue with someone saying that a PA essentially can perform in the same manner as a physician, just as a NP really cannot take the place of an MD. They all have their roles and there certainly are exceptions to the rule, where there are PAs and NPs better than the MDs collaborating with them. ...

Context Phenomenography is a qualitative approach to research which has revolutionised the way that researchers and teachers think about the processes and outcomes of learning in higher education. Phenomenography has also been used successfully in medical and health care research for the last 20 years. Phenomenography provides a lens through which to view certain types of research question. It also provides direction for how to empirically carry out the research.. Methods This paper introduces phenomenography as a viable qualitative approach for use in medical education research.. Results A phenomenographic study maps the qualitatively different ways in which people experience a phenomenon. This type of study can have an important impact on, for example, patient communication, clinical practice and health care education.. Conclusion We suggest that a phenomenographic approach can be used to explore many medical education research issues, and can facilitate more solid links between research and ...

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education defines CME as:. Continuing Medical Education consists of education activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. The content of CME is that of body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.. A broad definition of CME, such as the one found above, recognizes that all continuing educational activities that assist physicians in carrying out their professional responsibilities more effectively and efficiently are CME. A course in management would be appropriate CME for physicians responsible for managing a health care facility; a course in practice management would be appropriate CME for physician practitioners interested ...

Welcome to the Cardiovascular Institutes Online Learning Center where youll experience quality medical education at your convenience. The online learning center is one aspect of how we are changing the face of medical education. Students are often thrown into the world of medicine with little direction and guidance. One can say that students are often seen but not heard. It is undoubtedly more difficult to learn medicine in a competitive environment.. Here at the Cardiovascular Institute we want to nurture a healthy and open learning atmosphere. We want students to cultivate their minds and develop their skills their full potential. Medical students have mastered the art of regurgitating numbers and facts from books. Our desire is for students to truly grasp the art of medicine, to learn patient care in addition to the science behind the disease. Here we created a space where students are given opportunities to learn from not only books but experts in their field. We encourage students to ...

Topeka Despite expected budget cuts in many areas of state government, Kansas University officials on Monday pushed for a $30 million commitment from Gov. Sam Brownback to help construct a new $75 million medical building at KU Medical Centers main campus in Kansas City, Kan.. Steve Stites, KUMCs acting executive vice chancellor, was scheduled to meet with Brownback to discuss the proposed education and training facility.. Stites said the current medical education building, which opened in 1976, was made for the large-group lecture format, which does not fit the modern medical training model.. He said medical training has evolved from "see one, do one, teach one," to small group, team-based instruction with lots of simulation and practice before trying a procedure in real life.. Stites compared the new method to pilot training, which produces a low error rate in the airline industry. "Pilots dont make mistakes and doctors do. What is different about their training? The FDA has leveraged the accredited CME community to educate clinicians who prescribe opioid medications about how to assess patients, initiate and manage medications, modify dosing and make decisions about when to discontinue use of ER / LA opioid therapies. The MedBiquitous Medical Education Metrics standard has provided the common language for collecting this data.. As another example, PARS was modified to enable accredited organizations to submit activity and learner data about CME that counts for Maintenance of Certification (MOC). These modifications enable accredited organizations to help physicians meet their professional requirements. PARS uses the MedBiquitous Activity Report standard to communicate this data to certifying boards.. "Using PARS, accredited CME organizations ...
