In 2008, we established the Major in Psychology within the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, that seeks to train clinical psychologists, and the Graduate School of Rehabilitation was established in 2009. Moreover, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established in 2012, based on the 6-year program in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. With the goal of making Kobe Gakuin University "a university that can contribute to the betterment of health and lives," we have so far established seven graduate schools specializing in various professional disciplines. While the research of these graduate schools connects directly back to each respective department, they strive to be centers of learning that enter fields differing from the departments their students graduated from so that they foster the kind of flexible thinking and professionalism that makes graduates immediately ready to serve in the working world ...

Lets talk about graduate school. Ive spent this year as the Interim Director of Graduate Studies in my department as the usual director is on sabbatical. Speaking of which, I have one more week of teaching until I start my sabbatical. Yes, I am going to enjoy the next 16 months of not teaching, while researching, writing, and hiking as much as possible. Anyway, graduate school. The question of whether to go to graduate school and how to survive graduate school is one I have thought about a great deal. As someone with a PhD from the University of New Mexico, I had to. Not only was nothing ever guaranteed for us Lobos who werent ever thought to be able to compete with the Yale and Harvard graduates of the world, but I hit the job market right as the economy collapsed in 2008. The first full year I was on the market, 1/2 of the jobs I applied for were shut down before interviews took place. It was grim. I had a visiting position but it took me 4 years to find a tenure-track job. And I am damned ...

Motivation is an important part of any students progress and success. Nathan was motivated by looking for answers to questions that had not yet been answered. "I had to answer the question with the results that I saw before me - every experiment was part of some larger picture that I could only see piece by piece. I was also motivated by the fact that I simply enjoyed what I did.". When asked what his most rewarding experience at UAB was, Nathan answered, "I think it is simply living the graduate student lifestyle here and loving it. I look back at how I changed from a first year grad student balancing studying and meeting new people to a senior graduate student spending time in lab and not even thinking about meeting new people. I will always look back fondly on the time I spent here and I hope the friendships I made here with other graduate students will last a lifetime. Theres something about being broke and overworked that really brings graduate students together ...

See our page on Graduate School.). An option for every student to consider is further study in CSE after graduation. This can be any combination of self-directed study, a masters degree program, and/or a Ph.D. program. It is not possible for us to fit everything worth learning about CSE in the scant number of credits available in the undergraduate degree program. Instead, our aim at the undergraduate level is to provide a foundation for students to be able to learn more, either on their own or as part of a graduate degree program. The field of CSE moves ahead quickly! It is crucial to stay current with new technologies to stay productive.. Masters degree programs largely fall into two flavors: primarily coursework, or a mixture of coursework and independent research. Graduate coursework generally focuses on bringing students to the state of the art in a particular sub-area of CSE, while independent research targets the creation of new knowledge in the construction of leading edge computer ...

I know that many of you are undergraduate students who are interested in going on to graduate school in psychology. Others are in masters degree programs and hope to get into a doctoral program. As a student, your perceptions of graduate admissions criteria may differ from those used by graduate admissions committees (Cashin & Landrum, 1991). Although you may accurately recognize the importance of your overall GPA, you probably underestimate the importance of your verbal and quantitative GRE scores, your autobiographical statement, and your letters of recommendation. You are also likely to overestimate the importance of extracurricular activities, practica, and the prestige of your undergraduate institution (Cashin & Landrum, 1991). The purpose of this article is to describe the real role that research experience plays in graduate admissions decisions. You are already ahead of the game. Most students dont bother to investigate how graduate schools select students until they are rejected by the ...

Apply to several programs. There are numerous reasons for being rejected from a parcticular graduate program, many of them out of your control, such as retirement or departure of the most appropriate potential advisor, or the shortage of funds to support graduate students. Increase your odds by sending out more than one application, although dont lower your standards so much that you end up enrolling in a weak program just because you were accepted there.. Graduate schools consider a variety of factors in selecting students. Although undergraduate grades and breadth of course work are important, a strong showing on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) can go a long way towards compensating for a modest grade point average. What is most important is evidence of independent research, especially a successful senior project.. Your application essay should highlight what you have done outside of the classroom. Although nobody really expects an undergraduate to be able to propose a specific PhD thesis ...

Generally the admission to a master degree programme at a university or a university of applied science is granted on the basis of the successful completion of an Austrian bachelor degree programme (Bachelorstudium), including degrees from Austrian universities of applied sciences, or a comparable post-secondary degree acknowledged to be its equivalent. The admission to the master programme Quantitative Asset and Risk Management therefore requires the successful completion of a bachelors or masters degree in social sciences, economic / business studies, in natural sciences, or in law at a university or a university of applied sciences. The university or university of applied sciences can be domestic or abroad; it must be recognised as a post-secondary education institution in its country of residence. In general admission to universities of applied sciences is based on a selective admissions process. The admission process for the master degree programme Quantitative Asset and Risk Management ...

Seven doctoral students secured Deans Faculty Fellowships in the second year of awards. A joint pilot initiative of Brown Universitys Graduate School and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, the fellowships are designed to allow advanced graduate students to strengthen their teaching portfolios by developing their own courses in consultation with a faculty mentor.. For Meghan Wilson, a new Deans Faculty Fellow in the Political Science program, the opportunity provides the time to address the Flint water crisis in her dissertation on municipal takeovers. She envisions more time to publish, too, which could ease the process of turning her thesis into a book.. "Its also great to have your own class," adds Wilson, who is poised to teach Minority Political Behavior in Spring 2017. "For me and for the department, there is a psychological transition in being a Visiting Assistant Professor. During this process, I can see faculty as my colleagues.". ...

Those of us who become a part of the UAB family quickly realize that we are a part of a diverse and special community. The research that takes place on our campus is world renowned as being on the cutting edge. Our graduate students are quite fortunate to be able to contribute to this research. Paul Mangan is no exception.. Paul received his Ph.D. in microbiology from UAB this August. Before Paul came to study here, he graduated with a degree in biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame. After working as a pre-doctoral researcher at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), he decided to pursue a Ph.D. After receiving encouragement from two UAB dental students he met at the NIH, Paul decided to look into the biomedical research programs at UAB and discovered that they were among the best in the country. "After visiting UAB for the CMB recruiting weekend I was tremendously impressed by the warm sense of community and collaboration among the students and faculty, which is what ultimately ...
Decisions concerning admission to graduate programs rest with the programs, and criteria used for determining admission beyond these minimal requirements are established by the programs. Programs have the authority to set their application deadlines, to require certain pre-admission examinations, to require satisfactory completion of certain course work prior to admission, and to establish other pre-admission requirements. Program admission decisions are final unless it is demonstrated that the program violated a policy established by the university or the Graduate School or that the program failed to apply admissions criteria consistently. All programs have established written criteria for judging the admissibility of applicants, which are published in each programs graduate handbook ...

Career Story Blog Post By Ernest Smith, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer at Vaccinex. I entered graduate school in the summer of 1994, a couple weeks after graduating from St. John Fisher College with a Biology degree. I joined URs Department of Microbiology and Immunology, which afforded me a wide range of labs to work in. Over the following nine months, I did rotations in labs that focused on Immunology, Virology and Biochemistry. Even as a graduate student, I have always been more interested in developing new technologies than I have been in discovering new biology. I see discovery research as a form of detective work; you uncover the facts, follow the leads and present your case. You dont change the facts; you just try to understand them. In contrast, I found inventing new technologies exciting because you are changing the reality and making something exist that didnt exist before. Although building a knowledge base through discovery research and understanding biology well enough to ...

Yeah its not much better for grad students in the sciences, especially if you go to a state school and not an Ivy League program. At first it doesnt seem so bad, as you get paid during grad school and get a full tuition waiver, but you come out with basically the same options: with a CV full of papers, conferences, and TA experience, youre most qualified to become a professor. Almost everyone I knew in grad school in the sciences never did an internship because they were too busy teaching/researching over the summers. So in the end, you apply to academic jobs and face the same problems described in this blog, or you try to find non-academic jobs, but you have no actual work experience and the PhD makes you overqualified for most entry-level positions. Oh sure, you could work at one of the research labs! Yeah good luck with that. Those jobs are just as competitive as tenure-track positions. If you can swallow your pride enough, you can apply to the same entry-level positions that ...

Pierre Bélanger is Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Harvard Universitys Graduate School of Design. In the Department of Landscape Architecture, Bélanger teaches and coordinates graduate courses at the intersection of ecology, infrastructure, media and urbanism in the interrelated fields of design, communications, planning and engineering. With a multimedia approach and cross-scalar approach to design in both research and practice, his core interests lie at the convergence of the study of territory, ecology, and power.. In response to the inertia of urban planning and the overexertion of civil engineering in public works today, Bélangers contribution to the field of "landscape infrastructure" has been shared and developed in collaboration with governments, professionals and academics worldwide. Vis-à-vis the complexities, magnitudes and indeterminacies of urban change, Bélangers core commitment lies in the agency of landscape architecture and the field of landscape to ...
