A life-support system is the combination of equipment that allows survival in an environment or situation that would not support that life in its absence. It is generally applied to systems supporting human life in situations where the outside environment is hostile, such as in space or underwater, or medical situations where the health of the person is compromised to the extent that the risk of death would be high without the function of the equipment. In human spaceflight, a life-support system is a group of devices that allow a human being to survive in space. US government space agency NASA,[1] and private spaceflight companies use the term environmental control and life-support system or the acronym ECLSS when describing these systems.[2] The life-support system may supply air, water and food. It must also maintain the correct body temperature, an acceptable pressure on the body and deal with the bodys waste products. Shielding against harmful external influences such as radiation and ...
Arthrospira-B (Batch Culture): Today concluded the incubation of three Arthrospira-B experiment containers (ECs), one that began two weeks ago, and two that began last week. The ECs were removed from the BioLab Incubator and disassembled inside of the BioLab Glovebox, prior to the samples being inserted into the Minus Eighty Degree Celsius Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI). The Arthrospira B experiment is an important step in making improvements in the area of closed regenerative life support systems in space which will help in making future human exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit become a reality. The cyanobacterium Arthrospira sp. strain PCC8005 is a candidate for use in spacecraft biological life support systems, for CO2 and nitrate removal, and oxygen and biomass production. However, to ensure the reliability of such a biological life support system it is necessary to characterize the response of Arthrospira sp. PCC8005 to in situ spaceflight conditions. Heres problem both Snatching and Fission face: there is no death on these stories, since death requires the cessation of biological life. But on both, biological life is continuously maintained. These are stories about life after teleportation rather than about life after death. But we do in fact die: Scripture is completely clear on this.. Maybe one could modify my formulations of Snatching or Fission to solve this problem. Rather than the snatching or fission happening at the last moment of life, it happens at the first moment of death. Thus, God snatches or fissions a central part of the person after the person is already dead, and then resuscitates the part in heaven, purgatory or hell. The problem with this is that Snatching and Fission are meant to preserve biological continuity. But while typically after death cells remain with some semblance of biological life, this need not always happen. Suppose that someone dies by having a laser blast their brain. That person dies precisely when ...

Since the fuel can no longer carry water dissolved in solution, more water is shedding to the bottom of fuel tanks, creating a life-support system and breeding ground for microbes. Paraffin content has increased as sulfur and aromatics decrease, providing a major food source to microbes. Additionally, sulfur is a natural poison to bacteria and fungus, and its reduction has further exacerbated microbial contamination problems in ULSD.. Microbes normally invade the water found on tank bottoms and easily become established in as little as one to two months. They grow on all interior surfaces of the fuel tank by encasing themselves in their own excrement, which is seen on fuel-filters as a black or brown slimy or mucus-like substance. The excrement is acidic and causes corrosion that can lead to failure of pumps, level detection devices and tank leakage. Plugging of fuel-filters on both dispensers and equipment is usually the first sign of microbial contamination. ...

With no other options left to me, I spent the day feebly trying to stand or otherwise leave the bed. But, it was a physical impossibility. My withered limbs were only part of the problem, as Im sure my massive member now weighed more than the rest of me. And I knew, with the addition of my nutsack, it could easily be twice the rest of my body. Its pulsating bulbous head was only slightly smaller than my own and was forever the consistency of steel. Even after shed made me come again and again (as only she could), my raging hard-on never subsided. Ungainliness aside, its unyielding nature was probably for the best, as I was sure the rest of my body would explode if the blood ever tried to drain out of my massive dick. I knew my balls would explode if she didnt come to empty them. I could feel them slowly and painfully filling over the course of each day. My heart seemed to beat only in order to keep my mountainous member hard and waiting for her. My body existed only as a life-support system ...
Stardate: none given. Captains Log: The Enterprise is studying solar flares in the Delos system, which are playing merry hell with ships systems. They also pick up a distress call from the Ornaran freighter Sanction. Its orbit around the fourth planet is deteriorating, and they need help. Picard orders the Enterprise to assist, which proves problematic, as the Ornarans dont seem to know how to operate their own ship.. After a rather hilarious sequence of events that reminds me a great deal of the last phone call I had to make to tech support, they manage to rescue four of the people on the freighter, as well as their cargo. In fact, the Ornarans send their cargo over first, which confuses Picard, as he cant imagine why theyd send cargo instead of people who are about to die. This shows a staggering lack of imagination, as I can think of a dozen reasons off the top of my head why the cargo would be more important-if, say, it was medicine or valuable parts for a life-support system or any ...

BIOLOGICAL COMPARISONS OVERVIEW:. Form and structure of many organisms have a similar design and use. Comparing and contrasting these systems is very important, because if you know one system you can deduce or infer what the function of that system is. These activities allow students to use what they used in the first semester to figure out other organisms. Reference material is also used.. INTRODUCTION:. Biological life somehow adapts to its environment. In order to see adaption students must first realize that you must compare biological systems.. In lab 30, you will have students compare the circulatory systems of several different organisms. they will first need to look at reference material in order to get some idea of what to compare. Then they will look at preserved animals around the room. What they should notice is that large organisms are a more complicated system. They will need their reference material throughout the lab.. In lab 31, students will examine specimens of different ...

Scientists are hoping to revive a 50-year-old failed experiment that tried to discover how biological life could have originated from non-living chemical processes. Dr. Jeffrey Bada and Adam Johnson reanalyzed the sludge in the bottom of some of the late Stanley Millers vials.. What they found were 10 newly-identified amino acids. Does that mean that science is closer to proving abiogenesis, the generation of life from non-life? More... ...
It seems clear to me that the primary flaw in Kellers argument is his presupposition that the scientific case for macro-evolutionary processes is so incontrovertible as to REQUIRE Christians to reconcile it with Scripture. While he makes a half-hearted attempt to acknowledge the responsibility of the pastor to read the works of scientists, it is obvious that he has committed an egregious pastoral error in discounting (or completely missing) the substantial body of scientific research that calls much of macro-evolutionary theory into question. Why are we SO willing to cede this crucial ground to evolutionists at just the point in history when recent advances in bio-chemistry and genetic research (among other disciplines) are beginning to highlight the infinitesimally small probability evolutionary biological processes could have EVER resulted in genetically viable forms of biological life? I would suggest that Keller open his mind and at least consider the possibility that he may be ...

Every kind of biological life process, from small to large, multiply, life and death, metabolism, is related to enzymes. If there is no catalysis of enzymes, the most basic food digestion in life and oxygen breathing can not be carried out. In fact, the various reactions occurring in the body are almost always carried out by the enzyme. It can be said that there is no enzyme, there is no life.. Here are three enzyme catalytic systems, which let us better understand the function and function of the enzyme from Creative Enzymes.. E. coli Enzyme Expression System. To date, a variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems have been developed to produce recombinant proteins. Compared with other systems, Escherichia coli expression system has the advantages of clear genetic background, easy operation, large-scale fermentation culture, and is the most commonly used expression system at this stage. However, in the process of exogenous gene expression, there may be problems such as low ...
Evolutionary consciousness is a term from the sciences, acknowledging that the whole of existence is evolving: the cosmos (13.8 billion years), the planet (5 billion years), biological life (2.5 billion years), human understanding. As people of faith, we acknowledge that the source of this movement toward greater wholeness and complexity is God/Christ. We as a species have moved from early primate to homo sapiens; from tribal communities where only the collective community mattered to an understanding of the sacred importance of the individual and now to understanding that individuality must be in balance with the greater common good. Our morality continues to evolve as we have moved out of acceptance (and even promotion) of slavery, child labor, genocide, geocide, gender inequality, racism, ethnocentrism.. And we stretch because these new understandings dont come without much study, prayer, reflection, dialogue, and the ministerial challenges that call us to new growth. We have to let go of ...
The problem is not the behaviors per se. After all, biological life is exploitative, punishment averse and reward seeking. The problem is the time span. If we can somehow modify our behaviors before circumstances dictate our responses, we stand a small chance of not just surviving, but surviving in a livable environment. And the only sliver lining in what seems to be the inevitable crash is the delight in knowing that the Wall Street plutocrats and their minions (their delusional self-image not withstanding) will be the most ill-equipped to live in a dystopian Road Warrior future - first to whine, first to be smacked in the mouth and told to shut the fuck up, first to starve, first to be eaten, first to be made into lampshades. I say this with great confidence when, considering they can barely handle holding their bladder when they dont get up to take a pee while holding a position, they are at a severe disadvantage to people in Guiyu, the Peoples Republic of China, who willing to expose ...
Capacity for sentience and sentience are two different things. Unless you can demonstrate it, its all a matter of potential. Newborns do not express or recognize emotions for at least the first few weeks of life. It takes 7-8 weeks to even express the most basic emotion, fear. People will often project their own emotions or personality onto newborns, but according to the studies I am aware of, and my own experience raising children, they really dont have personalities or emotions right away. Part of the fun of having kids is watching those develop and helping them figure it all out. My take on it is that all biological human life has value. I have to treat sentience and potential for sentience as equal, since there is no credible way to measure it we can only say if it is possible or not. That doesnt mean we should artificially extend the biological life of a person who has lost their capacity or potential for sentience. A brain dead person doesnt usually survive long without brain ...

The development of auto-regenerative biological life support systems for men in Space will be based on photosynthetic organisms, such as higher plants and algae, providing edible material. In this work, Spirulina platensis grown in a continuous photobioreactor was used to design a process for its recovery and further treatment to be used as food. Two different possibilities are studied (liquid or dry food). In each case, different steps are considered in the design of the process and further characterised: cell harvesting, washing, pasteurisation and spry-drying. Special emphasis is made on biomass quality, both in terms of potential microbial contamination and changes in its composition during the different steps of the process. Cell harvesting was conducted with a net recovery of solids and water higher than 95% with a solids concentration factor about 20-30. Biomass quality was shown as satisfactory in all the treatments tested ...

Three of SPACECRAFTs upcoming titles are Jade McGregors Psychiatric Update: May 10th, an excerpt from Ian Whistles Anomaly, and Kevin McPherson Eckhoffs Time Machine. McGregors Psychiatric Update explores the internalized objectification facilitated by technical, clinical discourse, in order to experiment with blurring the distinctions between the disciplines of Creative Writing and Psychology, and between the genres of poetry and prose. Whistles excerpt from Anomaly dissects aspects of literary theory using scientific and technical terminology. The consistent strength of the Anomaly series is in Whistles use of collage, in the mercurial manner with which the poems wend their way across disparate language, reassembling a rigorous attention to language in order to reflect on and investigate the roles of structure and meaning, even as the order works to deliberately trouble and unsettle. Finally, Eckhoffs Time Machine is a hot-wiring of The Time Machine by H.G Wells. Eckhoff used an online ...
There are more than 1,000 temples in Angkor which have been reclaimed from the jungle and some are magnificent architectural gems to rival the best around the world. Recent Satellite photos have revealed that Angkor spread over 400 square miles making it the largest preindustrial center in the world. Here are some of the best. The immense Khmer empire from the 9th to the 15th C century stretched over present day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam all the way to India. At Angkor it created a sophisticated network of hydraulic canals and rice paddies that supported over a million people and left architectural monuments that are as overwhelming as ancient Egypt. The ruins of Angkor have been declared a Unesco World Heritage site. In 1431 enemy armies invaded and sacked Angkor. The population left , the region was abandoned and most of this incredible culture was swallowed up by the jungle. In gametic meiosis, instead of immediately dividing meiotically to produce haploid cells, the zygote divides mitotically to produce a multicellular diploid individual or a group of more unicellular diploid cells. Cells from the diploid individuals then undergo meiosis to produce haploid cells or gametes. Haploid cells may divide to form more haploid cells, as in many yeasts, but the haploid phase is not the predominant life cycle phase. In most diplonts, mitosis occurs only in the diploid phase, i.e. gametes usually form quickly and fuse to produce diploid zygotes. In the whole cycle, gametes are usually the only haploid cells, and mitosis usually occurs only in the diploid phase. The diploid multicellular individual is a diplont, hence a gametic meiosis is also called a diplontic life cycle. Diplonts are: ...

Food security has always been a key resilience facet for people living in cities. This paper discusses lessons for food security fromhistoric and prehistoric cities. The Chicago school of urban sociology established amodernist understanding of urbanism as an essentialist reality separate from its larger life-support system. However, different urban histories have given rise to a remarkable spatial diversity and temporal variation viewed at the global and long-term scales that are often overlooked in urban scholarship.Drawing on two case studies fromwidely different historical and cultural contexts - the Classic Maya civilization of the late first millennium AD and Byzantine Constantinople - this paper demonstrates urban farming as a pertinent feature of urban support systems over the long-term and global scales. We show how urban gardens, agriculture, and water management as well as the linked social-ecological memories of how to uphold such practices over time have contributed to long-term food ...

First of all the high temperature outer window. An additional method to tolerate thermal shocks would be to section it like a stained glass window. Of course you could not use lead between the facets. It would have to be a higher temperature material. But by making it with multiple facets, it should be possible to further limit the harm that thermal shock could do. So the outer window would be primarily to convert infrared light and U.V. light to heat, and to block passage into the Half Shell. And the intention as well would be to pass useful visible light into the Half Shell to be reflected down through the ice bag window, the ice bag window would be shaped like a large coin perhaps.. To use the heat collected I have specified channels for the passage of fluids to heat up. Most likely an Ammonia Water mix might do. It would perhaps endure the cold of night as well, so you would not have to purge it daily. We would not want to pass large quantities of Ammonia into the lakes water, and we ...

No stranger to protest, Fondas life has been famously shaped by activism. And now she is once again galvanizing the public to take to the streets. Many are already aware of the looming disaster of climate change and realize that a moral responsibility rests on our shoulders. In 2019, we saw atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases hit the highest level ever recorded in human history, and our window of opportunity to act is quickly closing. We are facing a climate crisis, but were also facing an empathy crisis and an inequality crisis; the surge of protests over police violence against black Americans has once again highlighted the links between racism and environmental degradation in our country. It isnt only earths life-support systems that are unraveling. So too is our social fabric. This is going to take an all-out war on drilling and fracking and deregulation and racism and misogyny and colonialism and despair all at the same time ...
Both cuts and dips were happening daily, sometimes several times, for weeks on end in mid- to late January in areas of Gauteng which are home to half a dozen hospitals.. Paul Crooke, a vascular surgeon at the nearby Olivedale Hospital, said great anxiety prevailed because all life-support systems were being forced to rely on generators. It could be absolutely catastrophic, he said, adding that it was time the government excluded hospitals from this, we are emergency services after all.. He said doctors were enormously frustrated. Were working late into the night and at weekends to make up operating time and its basically impossible to consult.. Elaine Rix, Olivedales marketing manager, said that on 24 January they first lost power at 08h00 for 40 minutes and then again from noon until 15h45.All our theatre cases (60 of them) obviously had to be rescheduled. We have huge generators (they purchased a second one late last year) that keep the hospital going but you cant do elective ...

Vernadsky first popularized the concept of the noosphere and deepened the idea of the biosphere to the meaning largely recognized by todays scientific community. The word biosphere was invented by Austrian geologist Eduard Suess, whom Vernadsky met in 1911. In Vernadskys theory of the Earths development, the noosphere is the third stage in the earths development, after the geosphere (inanimate matter) and the biosphere (biological life). Just as the emergence of life fundamentally transformed the geosphere, the emergence of human cognition will fundamentally transform the biosphere. In this theory, the principles of both life and cognition are essential features of the Earths evolution, and must have been implicit in the earth all along. This systemic and geological analysis of living systems complements Charles Darwins theory of natural selection,[citation needed] which looks at each individual species, rather than at its relationship to a subsuming principle. Vernadskys visionary ...
Regenerative medicine is a rapidly developing field, merging engineering and biological life sciences to create biological replacements for damaged tissue and organ function. Development of cellular based therapies has the potential of curing present untreatable diseases and conditions, such as diabetes. The identification of protein expression patterns, that guide undifferentiated cells to different lineages, can provide important information about the progression of cellular differentiation at various stages. This research project utilizes proteomics and in vitro live-cell microscopy to investigate two distinct cellular systems: (1) the signaling pathways of calmodulin (CaM) in the differentiation of a human glioblastoma cell line; and (2) the effect of islet neogenesis associated protein (INGAP) on human islet-derived progenitor cells (hIPCs). Using a proteomic readout with a long term live-cell imagining approach, it was hypothesized that highly specific binding proteins of a CaM-mutant, and ...
Introduction. The role of water in living organisms Water is one of the most abundant molecules on planet earth; it is found in vast amounts not only in earthly enviroments (oceans, lakes and rivers), but is also present in the atmosphere, and as solid ice in the two poles. Consequently it is rather logical that water plays an important role in biological life: the origins of life occurred in water and life itself wouldnt be able to continue in its absence . I will now describe the structure of a water molecule. It consists of an oxygen atom covalently bonded to two other atoms of hydrogen. The two bonds form a 105 degrees angle with eachother, but for the reason that oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen, the shared electron charge of the covalent bond is distributed more towards this atom, making the water molecule weakly polar. ...read more. Middle. The partial attraction and partial repulsion of the phospholipids to and from water cause them to form interfaces, or membranes, ...
Biological Weathering of Rocks,Man and Animals...Unlike physical and chemical weathering, the biological or living agents are responsible for both decomposition and disintegration of rocks and minerals. The biological life is mainly controlled largely by the prevailing environment.
Few contaminants can be as detrimental to a fuel system as water. Not only does water not burn like fuel, it supports biological life, like that shown here at the interface between fuel and water, which in turn clogs filters while producing corrosive by products.. Sensors should be installed in all primary filters, including tandem designs, as well as generators. Its important that WIF sensor alarms be located at both lower and upper helm stations and they must be audible, even over wind or entertainment system noise. Some annunciators simply use an indicator light, which may be easily overlooked.. Voltage and Refrigeration. Because the role played by virtually every vessels battery bank is critical, its important to maintain aclose watch on its voltage. A simple volt or amp-hour meter will of coursealert the user to a condition that requires attention. However, what happensif this low voltage condition occurs in the middle of the night? While manybattery bank monitoring systems can be ...
By: Sarah Jones Zagorski Baby Noah died from a spontaneous miscarriage on February 20th, 2014. His mother, Lara, named him Noah because it means rest and peace. Noah was only 12 weeks and 5 days old when he died. Even though he passed away, his perfectly formed body displays the development of a new human life, the most spectacular miracle on earth.. From the very start, a preborn human meets all of the criteria needed to establish biological life and secures his place in the human family. The child is metabolizing nutrition, moving, growing, can react to stimuli and contains the genetic potential necessary to reproduce. At only 18 to 22 days old, he begins to circulate his own blood, often times with a blood type unique to that of his mothers. In fact, his tiny heart will beat nearly 54 million times before he is even born.. At six-weeks-old, the childs eyes and eyelids, nose, mouth and tongue have formed and electrical brain activity can be observed. In his first twelve weeks of life, ...

Electrochemical device with components having direct significance to biological life processes is a potent futuristic strategy for the realization of all-round green and sustainable development. We present here synthesis design, structural analysis and ion transport of a novel solid organic electrolyte (G7Li), a compound reminiscent of ion channels, derived from regioisomeric N7-guanine-carboxylate conjugate and Li-ions. G7Li, with its in-built supply of Li+-ions, exhibited remarkably high lithium-ion transference number (= 0.75) and tunable room temperature ionic conductivity spanning three decades (approximate to 10(-7) to 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1)) as a function of moisture content. The ionic conductivity show a distinct reversible transition around 80-100 degrees C, from a dual Li+ and H+ (, 100 degrees C) to a pure Li+ conductor (, 100 degrees C). Systematic studies reveal a transition from water-assisted Li-ion transport to Li hopping-like mechanism involving guanine-Li coordination. While ...
This course hopefully will help us to figure out how much physics is involving on biological life, among them thermodynamics, entropic forces, low Reynold s number hydrodynamics, phase transition, chemical forces, molecular motors, charged systems. The text book also serves to introduce much of the conceptual material underlying the young fields of nanotechnology and soft materials. Definitely, I am not going to teach Biology in this course, as I don t know that myself! This is very much a physics course, and will emphasize the quantitative aspects of biological phenomena. I strongly recommend all students to read this and this before taking the course. ...
A) Men harbor the misconception that misconception that increasing age and excessive use may lead to weakening of the genitals and end in seminal bankruptcy. Because of this misguided belief, they observe sexual abstinence. One should remember that it is disuse which leads to atrophy a atrophy and not the use. As a man grows olde use. As a man grows older, he walks slow, he talks slow but he expects that his erection should not be slow! One needs to remember that this a normal phenomenon. Some are under the impression that one failure in making it means an end to sex life. As a result, many men move from effective sexual functioning to various degrees of importance. I always emphasize that occasional failures are common and a failure does not mean an end. Women harbor the misconception that menopause marks the end of sex life. Menopause merely marks the end of a womans reproductive career and not the conjugal career, which can continue up to the end of ones biological life. In fact, the ...
A framework using a palliative care approach can support GPs to develop proactive, patient-centred management plans that avoid the need for decision making in emotionally charged situations, the article said.. Most older people would prefer and benefit from care focused on their unique goals and quality of life, rather than that aimed at extending biological life. This approach can prevent unnecessary and burdensome interventions, as well as unwanted hospital admissions, and support Australians who wish to die at home (reportedly 70%).. The framework was developed by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine under the Australian Government initiative, Decision Assist, for palliative care of aged-care patients in a community-based setting.. It is a tool that requires GPs to answer the question Would you be surprised if your patient were to die in the next 6-12 months?. Their response guides them through a flowchart with three trajectories, based on the patients ...
Supramolecular chemistry investigates and exploits the chemistry of non-covalent weak interactions occurring among molecules. These are the key interactions responsible for all the recognition, transport, and sensing phenomena that are the basis of biological life, and chemists try to reproduce them in model systems. Even enzymes recognize their substrates through binding, but more importantly they bind and stabilize transition states as well as chemical intermediates. The latter recognition phenomena are responsible for the astonishing rate accelerations typical for enzymes. Molecular recognition is essentially the art of creation of weak intermolecular forces for the construction of structures able to recognize size, shape, functional group distribution, and charge distribution of the target molecule. Target molecules can be charged as well as neutral; however, selective recognition for the latter is more difficult. If the target molecule is in an intermediate state, the host becomes a supramolecular

Well first, just to be sure, I think you are talking about absolute humidity, right? Absolute humidity is the amount of water vapor per unit volume. In your closed system the amount of water is fixed, so the absolute humidity will change if the volume changes or some water condenses out. As I said the volume could change lowering the humidity. An example would be the isobaric heating you already indicated would lower the humidity. So for arguments sake lets say we are talking about a fixed volume, in which case, ok, heating it wont change the humidity. However cooling it certainly can change the humidity. Your premise (completely filled with humid air) isnt completely clear, but lets take that to mean 100% relative humidity. This would mean that any amount of cooling will condense water and lower the humidity. (Water in droplets on the wall dont count in the definition of humidity). We dont have to assume 100% relative humidity. How much water vapor just changes at what temperature the ...
Closed system, combined suction and ventilation medico-surgical tube devices include (1) a suction catheter, (2) a suction control valve positioned at the distal end of the system, (3) a multi-port coupling unit through which the catheter is fed for aspiration of a patient, (4) a flexible tubular sheath providing a sterility protective enclosure for the catheter fixed at its distal end to the proximal end of the coupling unit and (5) a sheath relief valve. The coupling units (4) have two separate members, one of which is fitted axially into the other so they may rotate relative to each other about their longitudinal axes to close and open access of the catheter from the sheath through the coupling unit into the patient. The suction control valves (2) have first and second substantially identical parts positioned together along a longitudinal side in sliding engagement with each other for movement between an open and a closed position of the valves. The sheath relief valves (5) serve to prevent air in

a reply to: neo96 technology and natural evolution develop at different rates. Its up to us to make it balance and work the best for us. The idea of technology was to lessen the drudgery of work, so it doesnt need hordes of workers ploughing a field when one tracktor could do it. Nothing wrong with technology to help society progress and free up peoples time for other pursuits. Just because we have technology we dont make an effort to keep our environment of life support systems as healthy as possible. It will be technology that ends up cleaning the planet from mans destructive attitude towards nature and its support systems ...

Fresh water makers are life support systems on oil platforms, FPSOs and FSOs, and need to be extremely reliable and robust with minimal operator intervention and maintenance. Ovivo offers a fresh water maker built around normal offshore engineering standards, materials of construction and manufactured with a standard compact and modularized design.
Standing in the way is Londons Great Ormond Hospital and an independent guardian appointed to represent Charlie, who have argued that the infants life support system should be switched off and he should be allowed to die with dignity.. Parents in Britain do not have the absolute right to make decisions for their children. It is normal for courts to intervene when parents and doctors disagree on the treatment of a child. The rights of the child take primacy, with the courts weighing issues such as whether a child is suffering and how much benefit a proposed treatment might produce. ...
Long-duration wide-area surveillance missions increasingly are space-based. MEO orbits offer space-based radar systems more time on station, but require very large array apertures on the order of 100m in diameter. Achieving larger apertures with smaller, lighter launch packages and stable on-orbit pointing is a challenge that E-Textiles promises to meet. Textile processes can be used to achieve a .... ...
On the other hand, many new energy technologies have already been proven in hundreds of demonstrations in laboratories scattered throughout the world. Any one or some of these approaches, if properly developed, could end our dangerous dependence on hydrocarbons and uranium. Clearly the traditional technologies keep us mired in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries rather than launching us forward into the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, this conventional thinking continues to dominate the news these days. Despite the great need, suppression of new energy has been historically documented in great detail by those who have taken the time to investigate. Inventors have suffered funding cuts, threats, sabotage and even assassination ever since the time of Nicola Tesla more than one century ago. We define new energy to generally mean innovative technologies with the potential of providing a quantum leap in our ability to tap cheap, clean, safe and decentralized energy for producing fuels and ...

The complex nature of ecological systems and the data arising from studies of these systems often require the development of specialized and sophisticated models so that progress can be made in understanding these systems. The objective under this task is to develop mathematical or statistical models that abstract and accommodate the unique characteristics of ecological systems and data, while allowing for maximum extraction of information about those systems. This is accomplished through collaboration with field biologists having unique or unusual data analysis questions or circumstances, and with mathematicians and statisticians able to creatively apply powerful mathematical or statistical methods to difficult, real-world problems. ...
