Near-Earth asteroid 2011 MD will pass only 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) above the Earths surface on Monday June 27 at about 9:30 EDT. The asteroid was discovered by the LINEAR near-Earth object discovery team observing from Socorro, New Mexico. This small asteroid, only 5-20 meters in diameter, is in a very Earth-like orbit about the Sun, but an orbital analysis indicates there is no chance it will actually strike Earth on Monday. If a rocky asteroid the size of 2011 MD were to enter Earths atmosphere, it would be expected to burn up high in the atmosphere and cause no damage to Earths surface. The accompanying diagram gives a view of the asteroids trajectory from the general direction of the Sun. This view indicates that 2011 MD will reach its closest Earth approach point in extreme southern latitudes (in fact over the southern Atlantic Ocean). Earth Institute interns Sriram Jayaprakash and Jimeng Du both worked with information scientist Xiaoshi Xing developing and improving emissions data. Jayaprakash evaluated, mapped, and gridded global sulfur emissions from energy use, and Du analyzed and processed the data using ArcGIS and other tools. The peraluminous granites of Nova Scotia and Morocco are compared to assess the viability of the Moroccan Model that postulates that the Meguma Zone (a suspect terrane of the northern Appalachians) was derived from north-western Africa. In addition, the relationship between the so-called northern and southern plutons of Nova Scotia are examined. A geochemical database of over 1300 peraluminous granite analyses from Nova Scotia, Morocco, Iberia (another potential source area) and, Australia (a presumably unrelated belt) was carefully compiled for this study. Tsunamis triggered by large offshore earthquakes are devastating, and buildings located near the coast experience damage and loss due to such extreme events. In evaluating regional tsunami impact via numerical tsunami simulations, it is important to pay close attention to local geographical features represented by a digital elevation model (DEM), because tsunami loss estimation is sensitive to its quality and resolution. This study investigates the influence of elevation data resolution on tsunami loss estimation at different scales by comparing tsunami risk results using DEMs of four resolutions (i.e., 10-m, 50-m, 150-m, and 450-m). Using stochastic tsunami modeling, a case study is carried out by focusing on the Tohoku region in Japan to investigate the influence of DEM resolution on tsunami loss estimation considering the effect of location attributes (i.e., coastal topography, distance from the coast, and land elevation) for two building portfolios on plain coast and ria coast. After graduating from Stanford in 1978, Tom Sisson came to UCSB in the fall of 1980 as one of several new graduate students who were working on the May 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens. Harry Glicken, later killed in the Unzen eruption, studied the St Helens landslide and debris avalanche, while Karen Gilkey worked on lahars, and Tom investigated the deposits and effects of the directed blast. They ended up at UCSB mainly because Cliff Hopson had determined the Holocene geology of St Helens, and because at that time R.V. Fisher was preeminent in the study of pyroclastic rocks.
