Most importantly, the underlying cause must be addressed in pets with chronic ear disease. Whenever I consult with an owner whose pet has a chronic infection of any type, I think of several things. First, while true food allergies are rare, improving the diet can help many pets, and finding the right food for the individual pet is crucial. I also worry about an underlying immune problem that predisposes to chronic infections. Therefore I always do something to support the immune system, and I make sure the pet is not suffering from allergies or adrenal or thyroid disease. Many dogs who swim frequently suffer ear and skin issues when the ears stay damp or are not cleaned after the swim.. Ear problems can be a bit frustrating for owners, as they can require time to respond, and often re-occur. They can also happen suddenly, requiring an urgent trip to the veterinarian. However, most patients do respond well to therapy with topical medications, immune support, and natural antimicrobials. With ...

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. BEIJING -- A disease killing pigs in southern China could spread with hotter summer weather, Chinas Agriculture Ministry warned Thursday.. The illness, which has killed at least 300 pigs, has been identified as a strain of blue ear disease, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.. It is the season for peak outbreaks. High temperature and humidity could cause even more outbreaks in the summer and autumn, the Agriculture Ministry said in a notice on its Web site.. It is difficult to know how widespread the disease is because Chinas pig industry is fragmented, with many animals raised on small farms or by individual farmers, the notice said.. It said local governments must increase their reporting of new cases.. Xinhua said blue ear disease spread to China in the mid-1990s, but a new mutation has caused the recent outbreak.. Blue ear disease, also called porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, was first identified in the United States in 1987, according ...

OBJECTIVE To determine whether adult cochlear implant (CI) users with superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) or asymptomatic superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) have different surgical, vestibular, and audiologic outcomes when compared to CI users with normal temporal bone anatomy. METHODS A retrospective single institution review of CI users with either superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome or asymptomatic superior semicircular canal dehiscence identified eight post-lingually deafened adults with unilateral or bilateral cochlear implantation between 2006 and 2010. Preoperative and postoperative speech perception scores as well as medical and epidemiological data were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS One patient with superior canal dehiscence syndrome and seven patients with asymptomatic superior semicircular canal dehiscence were identified, representing 7% or 8/113 of CI patients that fulfilled selection criteria. Average dehiscence length was 3.3 mm ± 0.79 SEM. Three patients
Thinning or dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal may occur on the middle cranial fossa floor or adjacent to the superior petrosal sinus (SPS). However, no symptomatic cases of superior canal dehiscence by SPS have been previously described. A 45-year-old woman presented with left-side pulsating tinnitus, autophony and disequilibrium. Examination showed conductive hearing loss and decreased threshold of vestibular evoked myogenic potential in the left side. Sound and vibration stimuli and positive pressure insufflations into the left ear evoked mainly torsional nystagmus instead of vertical-torsional nystagmus. High-resolution temporal bone CT revealed a dehiscence of the superior canal close to the common crus, which was encased by SPS. Symptoms and signs resolved after plugging the dehiscence through a middle fossa approach. Deep groove of SPS may cause superior canal dehiscence close to the common crus, and costimulation of the superior and posterior canals may explain the mainly ...
This article describes a relatively little known otologic condition called Patulous Eustachian Tube. The symptoms often go unrecognized since the complaints may, and often do, mimic other ear conditions. This article discusses the assessment, differential diagnosis, and types of treatment currently being utilized for this often challenging condition.

Excessive/Impacted Cerumen Approximately 6% of the general population and 30% of the elderly population experiences episodes of impacted cerumen, and it is thought to be one of the most prevalent otic disorders.1 Individuals with excessive or impacted cerumen may experience a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear and possibly a gradual loss of hearing. In addition, some may experience a dull sensation of pain. Carbamide peroxide 6.5% in anhydrous glycerin is the only FDA-approved nonprescription cerumen-softening agent for the softening and removal of excessive earwax in individuals 12 years of age and older. Cerumen-softening products can be used twice daily for up to 4 days. If symptoms persist after a 4-day period, patients should be referred to their primary care provider to seek further treatment. Water-Clogged Ears Due to the shape of an individuals ear canal, some patients may be more prone to an increased incidence of water-clogged ears. Excessive cerumen may also cause swelling, ...

CT scans work by constructing a series of cross-sectional x-ray images of the body as it is passed through a circular gantry. The gantry houses an x-ray tube and a detector assembly, which rotates around the patient. CT scans are particularly good for detecting bone injuries, imaging the lungs and chest, and discerning tumors. The ability to readily produce three dimensional images is a significant advantage of this type of scan versus a regular, two-dimensional x-ray. With respect to diagnosing middle ear disease, CT scans allow us to see the entire middle ear and determine whether it is filled with air (normal) or fluid (infected). Additionally, calculations taken from the scan can tell us the consistency of the fluid in the ear.. On October 23, we brought Townsend to WHOI-CSI for a CT scan. Sadly, the scan confirmed middle ear disease.. We discussed a variety of options including continued treatment, surgery, release without treatment, and euthanasia. Long term treatment including ear ...
Ototoxicity has been observed in up to 31% of patients treated with a single dose of PLATINOL 50 mg/m², and is manifested by tinnitus and/or hearing loss in the high frequency range (4000 to 8000 Hz). The prevelance of hearing loss in children is particularly high and is estimated to be 40-60%. Decreased ability to hear normal conversational tones may occur. Deafness after the initial dose of PLATINOL has been reported. Ototoxic effects may be more severe in children receiving PLATINOL.. Hearing loss can be unilateral or bilateral and tends to become more frequent and severe with repeated cisplatin doses. It is unclear whether PLATINOL-induced ototoxicity is reversible. Vestibular toxicity has also been reported. Ototoxic effects may be related to the peak plasma concentration of cisplatin. Ototoxicity can occur during treatment or be delayed. Audiometric monitoring should be performed prior to initiation of therapy, prior to each subsequent dose, and for several years post therapy.. The risk ...

TY - CHAP. T1 - Immune-Mediated Inner Ear Disease. AU - Lunardi, Claudio. AU - Puccetti, Antonio. PY - 2013/12. Y1 - 2013/12. N2 - Inner ear damage can be caused by viral infections, trauma, vascular damage, and immune mechanisms, and is responsible for sensorineural hearing loss, a syndrome characterized by rapid progression of hearing impairment that is frequently non-responsive to medical treatment. Immune-mediated inner ear disease can be of autoimmune origin either as an isolated process affecting only the ear, to be considered as an organ-specific autoimmune disease, or as part of a systemic autoimmune disorder in approximately 30% of cases. The incidence and prevalence of autoimmune inner ear disease is unknown due to the lack of reliable diagnostic tests and to the limited access to the site of autoimmune aggression. Since the rapid administration of steroids and/or other immunosuppressive agents may result in hearing preservation, a great effort is needed in order to find both clinical ...

Introduction Otitis media with effusion (OME) continues to be an important pediatric clinical problem, and more studies are needed to decide the proper treatment for it. Objective To assess the efficacy of nasal steroids in the management of OME by comparing its results with that of oral steroid and that of nasal saline spray as placebo. Methods This study was carried on 60 patients with OME who were divided into three groups: in group 1, 20 patients received mometasone furoate spray, one puff in each nostril daily, for 3 months; in group 2, 20 patients received oral prednisolone, 5 mg three times per day for the first 3 weeks; in group 3, 20 patients received nasal saline spray, one puff in each nostril daily for 3 months ...
Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a yellowish, waxy substance secreted in the ear canals. It plays an important role in the human ear canal, assisting in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, and insects. Excess or impacted cerumen can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal and impair hearing. ...
The Eustachian tube is a narrow structure running between the air-filled middle ear space and the back of the nose. It is designed to allow ventilation of the middle ear, but in around 5% of the adult population, the tube fails to open adequately, causing many different types of ear disease. Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty (BET) is a new minimally-invasive technique using a narrow balloon to stretch the Eustachian tube and has recently been used in patients. The aim of this project is to study the biomechanics of balloon inflation within human Eustachian tube tissue. In parallel, physical and 3D computer-based models will be created to add to our clinical observations, and provide methods of testing innovative adaptations to the procedure, and new equipment modifications. The project is a collaboration with Matt Smith and James Tysome in the ENT Department at Addenbrookes Hospital, with the help of a Engineering for Clinical Practice grant undertaken by MEng students Daisy Prior and Anna Weir ...
