Dysgeusia, also known as parageusia, is a distortion of the sense of taste. Dysgeusia is also often associated with ageusia, which is the complete lack of taste, and hypogeusia, which is a decrease in taste sensitivity. An alteration in taste or smell may be a secondary process in various disease states, or it may be the primary symptom. The distortion in the sense of taste is the only symptom, and diagnosis is usually complicated since the sense of taste is tied together with other sensory systems. Common causes of dysgeusia include chemotherapy, asthma treatment with albuterol, and zinc deficiency. Different drugs could also be responsible for altering taste and resulting in dysgeusia. Due to the variety of causes of dysgeusia, there are many possible treatments that are effective in alleviating or terminating the symptoms of dysgeusia. These include artificial saliva, pilocarpine, zinc supplementation, alterations in drug therapy, and alpha lipoic acid. The alterations in the sense of taste, ...
One of the most widely used treatments for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the combination of paclitaxel-cisplatin. These drugs may contribute to taste alterations like dysgeusia. Which alters the feeding of cancer patients, contributing to the anorexia, weight loss and malnutrition, which leads to a prognostic impact in a lower patient response to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgical treatment as well as increased toxic effects, impacting treatment discontinuation and therefore, morbidity and survival of patients. The objective of this study is to describe the threshold of perception and recognition of basic tastes in patients with NSCLC before treatment with platin and paclitaxel-based chemotherapy and after the second cycle, and analyze the effect in the developement of dysgeusia, as well as the association between these and the nutritional status and quality of life ...
In order to further classify the extent of dysgeusia and clinically measure the sense of taste, gustatory testing may be performed. Gustatory testing is performed either as a whole-mouth procedure or as a regional test. In both techniques, natural or electrical stimuli can be used. In regional testing, 20 to 50 µL of liquid stimulus is presented to the anterior and posterior tongue using a pipette, soaked filter-paper disks, or cotton swabs.[9] In whole mouth testing, small quantities (2-10 mL) of solution are administered, and the patient is asked to swish the solution around in the mouth.[9]. Threshold tests for sucrose (sweet), citric acid (sour), sodium chloride (salty), and quinine or caffeine (bitter) are frequently performed with natural stimuli. One of the most frequently used techniques is the "three-drop test."[11] In this test, three drops of liquid are presented to the subject. One of the drops is of the taste stimulus, and the other two drops are pure water.[11] Threshold is ...

The most commonly reported adverse reactions (greater than 35 percent) in clinical trials in adult patients receiving the combination of VICTRELIS (boceprevir) with PR were fatigue, anemia, nausea, headache and dysgeusia. Of these commonly reported adverse reactions, fatigue, anemia, nausea, and dysgeusia occurred at rates greater than or equal to 5 percent above the rates for PR alone in either clinical study. The incidence of these adverse reactions in previously untreated patients who were treated with combination therapy with VICTRELIS compared with peginterferon and ribavirin alone were: fatigue (58 vs. 59 percent), anemia (50 vs. 30 percent), nausea (46 vs. 42 percent) and dysgeusia (35 vs. 16 percent), respectively. The incidence of these adverse reactions in previous treatment-failure patients who were treated with combination therapy with VICTRELIS compared with PR alone were: fatigue (55 vs. 50 percent), anemia (45 vs. 20 percent), nausea (43 vs. 38 percent) and dysgeusia (44 vs. 11 ...
Dysgeusia can also be caused by a vitamin or mineral deficiency, like B-12 or zinc, or an overdose of a particular nutrient, dietary supplement or a food containing potentially toxic ingredients. An overdose of selenium -- a mineral found in seafood, lean red meat and Brazil nuts -- can cause a metallic taste. Excessive zinc consumption could also produce this condition as a side effect [source: Srilakshmi].. Perhaps the most serious cause of a metallic taste is clupeotoxin poisoning. This potentially fatal condition occurs after consuming plankton-eating fish such as sardines, herring, tarpons or bonefish contaminated with the toxin. This poison can not only cause ones mouth to taste like metal, but the victim can become violently ill, and approximately 50 percent of cases of clupeotoxin poisoning result in death. Besides dysgeusia, symptoms can include blue-tinged fingers, toes, nose and lips, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, abdominal pain and a drop in blood pressure [sources: Hui, ...

There are many causes for a metallic taste in the mouth (dysgeusia). These can range from infections of the gums/teeth or respiratory tract, side-effects of some medications.
In a statement on their website, they said symptoms of anosmia, or lack of sense of smell, and dysgeusia, or lack of taste, should be used to identify possible Covid-19 infections.. "Anosmia, in particular, has been seen in patients ultimately testing positive for the coronavirus with no other symptoms," the statement says.. It has long been known in medical literature that a sudden loss of smell may be associated with respiratory infections caused by other types of coronaviruses.. The same applies to conjunctivitis, a highly contagious condition also known as pink eye. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin, transparent layer of tissue, called conjunctiva, that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid.. Reports from China and around the world are showing that about 1% to 3% of people with Covid-19 also had conjunctivitis.. But this novel coronavirus, also called SARS-CoV-2, is just one of many viruses that can cause conjunctivitis, so it came as no real surprise to ...
Lifitegrast (trade name Xiidra) is an FDA approved drug indicated for the treatment of signs and symptoms of dry eye, a syndrome called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Lifitegrast reduces inflammation by inhibiting inflammatory cell binding. Common side effects in clinical trials were eye irritation, discomfort, blurred vision, and dysgeusia (a distortion of the sense of taste). Lifitegrast is supplied as an eye drop that can be applied two times a day. Lifitegrast inhibits an integrin, lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), from binding to intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). This mechanism down-regulates inflammation mediated by T lymphocytes. Lifitegrast was initially designed and developed by SARcode Bioscience which was acquired by Shire in 2013, who submitted a new drug application to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 2015. The FDA granted Shire a priority review a month later, and requested additional clinical data, which were supplied in January 2016. The ...
About 20 to 30 percent of patients consuming penicillamine suffer from after effects like vomiting, diarrhea, dysgeusia or distortion of taste sense and bone marrow suppression. Slowing down the healing process in the body is another reaction to this medicine.. Apart from the above painful side-effects, she also underwent severe depression. She was admitted to the Masina Mental hospital, a rehabilitation center in Mumbai around August 2008. She was given 14 electroshocks, also known as Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as a part of the treatment.. When you are first diagnosed for four to five years everyone is put on penicillamine because it removes copper faster though it has side effects too much of copper in the organs can result in irreplaceable damage hence everyone is put on penicillamine, Mendonca said in an interview to Scienceworldreport.com.. In 2010, Mendonca accidentally got burnt in the kitchen. Her wounds took time to heal due to penicillamine and she had to undergo three collagen ...

THERE IS ONE TOPICAL AGENT THAT HAS SHOWN TO BE REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL FOR SOME PATIENTS IN MY PRACTICE. THE PRODUCT IS GELCLAIR AND IT IS DESIGNED FOR TREATING ORAL MUCOCITIS THAT ARE SECONDARY TO CHEMOTHERAPY AND RADIATION. IT IS NORMALLY DILUTED BUT WE USE IT OFF LABEL IN UNDILUTED FORM .. Research in the last decade has suggested there is an underlying autonomic nerve disorder of the oral cavity in patients with BMS due to dysfunction of the sensory trigeminal nervous system.21 This evidence is supported by the presence of neuropathic symptoms, including pain, dysgeusia, and xerostomia. It has also been suggested that BMS results from a reduction in salivary output.18,22,23 if the etiology of BMS were proven to be of trigeminal nerve origin, cranial osteopathic manipulation to normalize neural function might be beneficial. This would require more definitive research into the etiology of BMS itself as well as the true effects of cranial manipulation, which have so far remained elusive in ...
Infusion reactions are expected to occur and include nausea, vomiting, fever, rigors or chills, flushing, dyspnea, hypoxemia, chest tightness, hypertension, tachycardia, bradycardia, dysgeusia, hematuria, and mild headache. Premedication with antipyretics, histamine antagonists, and corticosteroids may reduce the incidence and intensity of infusion reactions. Severe reactions, including respiratory distress, severe bronchospasm, severe bradycardia with heart block or other arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, hypotension, hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, renal compromise, encephalopathy, loss of consciousness, and seizure also may occur. Many of these reactions are related to the amount of DMSO administered. Minimizing the amount of DMSO administered may reduce the risk of such reactions, although idiosyncratic responses may occur even at DMSO doses thought to be tolerated. The actual amount of DMSO depends on the method of preparation of the product for infusion. Limiting the amount of DMSO infused ...
Salivary gland impairment after radioiodine therapy (RIT) is a well-known iatrogenic artifact that includes recurrent episodes of sialadenitis, hyposalivation, dysgeusia, and dysphagia. Several therapy modalities have been suggested over the years to decrease these effects on the salivary glands. However, in cases where the salivary gland system is impaired prior to RIT, preserving its function becomes more challenging. We present three patients who underwent RIT with pre-existing insult to the salivary glands and discuss the treatment modality employed. A protocol for treating patients with pre-existing salivary gland impairment prior to RIT is proposed. The dental professional personnel should be aware of RIT insult to the salivary glands in order to preserve more maliciously the oral health in these patients. Management of impaired salivary glands subjected to additional RIT is mandatory to reduce further damage to the glands function primarily by combining interventional sialoendoscopy for ...

Dr. Aviv Ouanounou comes back to speak about how to manage patients who suffer from thyroid disease. Highlights. Dr. Aviv Ouanounou discusses thyroid disease and its dental implications. The thyroid gland produces two important thyroid hormones, T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). The thyroid gland has many important functions including: metabolism, growth and development, cardiovascular effects (stroke volume, heart rate etc.), memory, growth and maturation of the epidermis and the central nervous system. Thyroid disease commonly presents as either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism and commonly affects women more often than men.. Risk factors for thyroid disease include women aged 55+, obesity, radiation to the thyroid gland or head and neck region, as well removal of the thyroid gland.. Common oral manifestations seen in hypothyroidism may include salivary gland enlargement, macroglossia, glossitis, delayed dental eruption, compromised periodontal health and dysgeusia. In ...

In the past few years there have been major changes in the treatment landscape in oncology; lung cancer is affected by those changes like almost no other solid tumor. The rise of further second- and third-line tyrosine kinase inhibitors offers sequential therapy for patients with mutated non-small-cell lung cancer. Immunotherapy has found its way into clinical routine and presents us with new challenges in managing side effects, evaluating treatment response and deciding on how long we treat our patients. The treatment algorithm of lung cancer has changed in the last month and further practice-changing trials are coming up, so treating lung cancer patients shows nowadays a more challenging perspective with the possibility of subsequently applied individual therapies ...
To acquire knowledge about the education needs of nurses in community hospitals, a pilot Nursing PI Education program was conducted in April 2005 by Brenda Reid, RN, MN (a Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Department of Nursing at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto).. Twenty nurses, all of whom were experienced infusion nurses working in PI outpatient clinics in Ottawa, attended the pilot, which consisted of a needs assessment of learning requirements followed by a lecture and focus group.. The results of the needs assessment showed that while all of the nurses worked with PI patients regularly, 50% of the nurses ranked themselves as having little or no knowledge about PI, drug therapies for PI, dosing of IGIV and outcomes of treatment. Furthermore, only 57% of the nurses responding ranked themselves as knowledgeable about managing side effects of IGIV, despite the respondents being experienced infusion nurses.. Comments received in the evaluation of the pilot program gave insights into ...
