Lung function is a predictor of morbidity and mortality, and the chronic nature of lung function decline allows for preventive initiatives. Proinflammatory constituents of organic dust are considered a possible cause of compromised respiratory health. The aim of this systematic review was to reveal the impact of organic dust exposure on long-term change in lung function. The literature search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. Predefined criteria concerned study design: longitudinal, ≥1 year follow-up, ≥50 exposed; exposure measures: organic dust, measured or estimated, in different occupational settings; and outcome measures: change in lung function measured by spirometry. Based on these criteria, 1580 potentially relevant publications were narrowed down to 20 included publications. Quality was evaluated and discussed based on six objectively defined criteria. Overall, 14 studies found some type of association ...

Cotton dust is defined as dust present in the air during the handling or processing of cotton which may contain a mixture of many substances including ground up plant matter, fiber, bacteria, fungi, soil, pesticides Inhalable Dust, Thoracic Dust and Respirable Dust are types of the dust. - 3
Dust control is the suppression of solid particles with diameters less than 500 micrometers. Dust poses a health threat to children,[12] older people, and those with respiratory illnesses.. House dust can become airborne easily. Care is required when removing dust to avoid causing the dust to become airborne. A feather duster tends to agitate the dust so it lands elsewhere. Products like Pledge and Swiffer are specifically made for removing dust by trapping it with sticky chemicals.. Certified HEPA (tested to MIL STD 282) can effectively trap 99.97% of dust at 0.3 micrometers. Not all HEPA (type/media) filters can effectively stop dust; while vacuum cleaners with HEPA (type/media) filters, water, or cyclones may filter more effectively than without, they may still exhaust millions of particles per cubic foot of air circulated. Central vacuum cleaners can be effective in removing dust, especially if they are exhausted directly to the outdoors.. Air filtering appliances differ greatly in their ...
The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, through an informal partnership with industry, labor, and the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration, has developed and tested a new instrument known as the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM). The new dust monitor is an integral part of the cap lamp that coal miners normally carry to work and provides continuous information about the concentration of respirable coal mine dust within the breathing zone of that individual. Previous laboratory testing demonstrated that there is a 95% confidence that greater than 95% of individual PDM measurements fall within ± 25% of reference measurements. The work presented in this paper focuses on the relationship between the PDM and respirable dust concentrations currently measured by a coal mine dust personal sampler unit utilizing a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone. The United Kingdom Mining Research Establishment instrument, used as the basis for coal mine respirable dust ...
Aeolian dust is primarily found in arid and semi-arid regions. When ascending air stream occurs in these regions, bacterial cells on dust particles can be lifted and transported over long distances by air currents. In Japan where from 3,000 to 5,000 km away from Aeolian dust source regions, about 4 million tons of Asian dust particles are estimated to be fallen out each year. Therefore, it is necessary to assess bacterial impact by Asian dust, and which requires accurate understanding of variations of the bacterial abundance and bacterial community structure under diverse conditions in non-Asian dust days. In this study, we estimated variation of airborne bacterial abundance and bacterial community structure on both Asian dust days and non-Asian dust days for a long term, including four seasons in outdoor environment. We sampled aerosol particles from May 2013 to Apr. 2015 (total 44 times). Bacterial abundance and community structure were determined with 16S rRNA gene targeted qPCR and ...
For researches on toxic chemicals in settled indoor dust, selection of dust fraction is a critical influencing factor to the accuracy of human exposure risk assessment results. However, analysis of the selection of dust fraction in recent studies revealed that there is no consensus. This study classified and presented researches on distribution of toxic chemicals according to dust particle size and on relationship between dust particle size and human exposure possibility. According to the literature, beyond the fact that there were no consistent conclusions on particle size distribution of adherent fraction, dust with particle size less than 100 mu m should be paid more attention and that larger than 250 mu m is neither adherent nor proper for human exposure risk assessment. Calculation results based on literature data show that with different selections of dust fractions, analytical results of toxic chemicals would vary up to 10-fold, which means that selecting dust fractions arbitrarily will ...
This manual provides guidance for dust control methods and materials that can be used successfully at airfields and heliports to stop dust from forming naturally or as a result of mans activities and to control dust in areas directly impacted by mans activities. Dust develops naturally in denuded or sparsely vegetated areas and in most unpaved, sparsely vegetated areas occupied by man. (Mans activities may be detrimental to existing vegetation and create a dust problem.) Dust is created in unsurfaced areas subjected to concentrated foot or vehicular traffic, and is usually a problem on shoulders of surfaced airport and heliport traffic areas. Dust control becomes desirable when man needs to occupy land areas adjacent to the dust producing areas or is required to conceal military activities. The control of dust is also an important factor to consider for lengthening the life of vehicles and their engines.. ...
Mineral dust is a term used to indicate atmospheric aerosols originated from the suspension of minerals constituting the soil, being composed of various oxides and carbonates. Human activities lead to 30% of the dust load in the atmosphere. The Sahara Desert is the major source of mineral dust, which subsequently spreads across the Mediterranean (where is the origin of rain dust) and Caribbean seas into northern South America, Central America, North America, and Europe. Additionally, it plays a significant role in the nutrient inflow to the Amazon rainforest. The Gobi Desert is another source of dust in the atmosphere, which affects eastern Asia and western North America. Mineral dust is mainly constituted of the oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O3, CaO, and others) and carbonates (CaCO3, MgCO3) that constitute the Earths crust. Global mineral dust emissions are estimated at 1000-5000 millions of tons per year, of which the largest part is attributed to deserts. Although this aerosol class is ...
Respiratory Symptoms and Diminished Lung Functions Associated with Occupational Dust Exposure Among Iron Ore Mine Workers in Iran
Abstract. At present, the air environment in China is characterized by complex pollution. In this paper, the pollutant sources, transport paths and aerosol optical properties during the dust pollution was conducted to analyse based on ground-based lidar, space-borne sensor and atmospheric transmission model. Firstly, the NMMB/BSC-Dust model, the VIIRS-Suomi NPP date and HYSPLIT were carried out to analyse the dust transport paths and the dust particle size, and then the concentration of particles was analysed. Finally, the optical properties of aerosol particles in the dust weather were studied. During the formation of this weather, there is high dust in the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts. With the influence of wind direction, the dust moves from north to south, and the dust load significantly increased in southern China. Dust at the low altitude is generally transported from the Taklamakan Desert, while dust at the high altitude is generally transported from the Gobi Desert. The hourly average ...
When the project timeline ended, an Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol was successfully completed granting permission to conduct the aforementioned research. However, research could not begin until the new dust rule, Lowering Miners Exposure to Respirable Coal Mine Dust, Including Continuous Personal Dust Monitors, passed on May 1, 2014 (79 FR 24813). Under this new rule, the dust level may not exceed 1.5 mg/m3. Additionally, the rule requires mine operators to use continuous personal dust monitors (CPDMs) by February 1, 2016, for designated occupations (DO) to better monitor and comply with regulatory exposures.. Because this date occurred well after the project was ending, this effort was rolled into a new project, An Analysis of Health and Safety Management Practices through Multilevel Interventions, to further test and evaluate the intervention framework. Within this project, a task is written to involve miners in interpreting feedback from their CPDMs with the hope of decreasing ...
Several work environments have the potential for organic dust exposure including agricultural fields, grain handling and storage areas, animal confinement areas, and dairy barns. Grain handling and storage has been associated with respiratory symptoms and illnesses (such as chronic cough, sputum production, chronic bronchitis, grain fever (organic dust toxic syndrome), and nasal and skin irritation in exposed workers. Similar findings were found in several global areas. Grain elevator workers frequently report symptoms such as cough, sputum production, wheezing, and dyspnea, and have obstructive or restrictive impairments on pulmonary function testing. Respiratory symptoms and worsening of ventilatory function have also been reported with workers exposed to dusts from soybeans and burned rice husk in rice farmers. Growing crops such as rice, soybeans, and flowers has been associated with lung disease (32-43).. Work in dairy barns is also related to respiratory illness. Hay and preserved grasses ...
Associations between house dust-associated beta-(1,3)-glucan exposure and airway inflammatory reactions have been reported, while such exposures in early childhood have been suggested to protect against asthma and wheezing. Most epidemiological studies have used reservoir dust samples and an inhibition enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for beta-(1,3)-glucan exposure assessment. The objective of this ... read more study was to develop inexpensive but highly sensitive enzyme immunoassays to measure airborne beta-(1,3)-glucans in low-exposure environments, like homes. Specificities of available anti-beta-(1,3)-glucan antibodies were defined by direct and inhibition experiments. Three suitable antibody combinations were selected for sandwich EIAs. beta-(1,3)-Glucans in passive airborne dust collected with an electrostatic dust fall collector (EDC) and floor dust from seven homes were measured with the three EIAs. Floor dust samples were additionally analyzed in the inhibition EIA. The sandwich EIAs were ...

OSHA cites Thomas Moore Feed of Navasota, Texas, for 18 violations. HOUSTON - Combustible dust left uncontrolled or suspended in the air can explode, which was one of many safety hazards discovered after an inspection at the Thomas Moore Feed facility in Navasota, Texas, by the U.S. Department of Labors Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA inspectors found 18 violations and proposed a penalty of $58,100.. The agencys Houston North Area Office did its inspection in September 2014 following a complaint. OSHA cited Thomas Moore Feed for not protecting workers from a potential dust explosion; allowing openings in the dust collection exhaust path of the hammer mill; failing to keep dust accumulations below 1/8 inch in a priority area; not maintaining a functioning monitoring device on the dust collector or making repairs to the dust collector; and not having an adequate dust emission source. Airborne grain dust in the right concentration can become explosive and must be properly ...
Global measurements of the elemental composition of fine particulate matter across several urban locations by the Surface Particulate Matter Network reveal an enhanced fraction of anthropogenic dust compared to natural dust sources, especially over Asia. We develop a global simulation of anthropogenic fugitive, combustion, and industrial dust which, to our knowledge, is partially missing or strongly underrepresented in global models. We estimate 2-16 μg/m3 increase in fine particulate mass concentration across East and South Asia by including anthropogenic fugitive, combustion, and industrial dust emissions. A simulation including anthropogenic fugitive, combustion, and industrial dust emissions increases the correlation from 0.06 to 0.66 of simulated fine dust in comparison with Surface Particulate Matter Network measurements at 13 globally dispersed locations, and reduces the low bias by 10% in total fine particulate mass in comparison with global in situ observations. Global ...
In December 1995 we took dust samples from nine pairs of pillows and analysed them for Der p I. Each pair consisted of one feather filled pillow and one filled with polyester fibre; these had been used together on the same adult bed for more than six months to ensure that the environmental exposures of the pillows in each pair were similar. The pillow fillings were encased in closely woven cotton fabric. Two of the subjects in our study slept with the polyester filled pillow on top, four with the feather filled pillow on top, and three had no preference. We took dust samples with a portable Hitachi CV-2500 vacuum cleaner with a sock attachment, vacuuming each pillow for three minutes on each side, a total of six minutes per pillow. We sieved the dust collected to remove fluff and large particles and weighed the resulting fine dust. We then analysed this dust for Der p I content using monoclonal antibody enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).2 The between batch coefficient of variation of the ...
Organic dust consists of particles with a biological origin. Airborne levels of bacteria, fungi, endotoxins, and glucans have been investigated in epidemiological studies of mucous membrane irritation, inflammation, and airway obstruction. Organic dust can be measured by gravimetry of filter samples. Microorganisms can be quantified by culture, microscopic, and DNA-based methods. Culture methods underestimate microbial exposure and have poor precision. However, high sensitivity and identification of species that indicate fungal contamination have advantages in indoor air studies. Microscopic and DNA-based methods quantify microorganisms independent of cultivability. Specific organisms can even be quantified with molecular techniques. Quantification of specific organic dust components is preferred to dust levels. However, no occupational exposure limits exist for specific agents, although criteria for endotoxin and fungal spores have been proposed. In exposure assessments of microbial agents, ...

Background: There is inconclusive evidence concerning cancer risks of organic dusts. Aim: The carcinogenic exposures are mainly inhalatory and the authors therefore studied associations between occupational exposure to eight different organic dusts and respiratory cancers in Finland. Methods: The authors followed up a cohort of all economically active Finns born between 1906 and 1945 for 30 million person-years during 1971-95. Incident cases of nasal, laryngeal, and lung cancer and mesotheliomas were identified through a record linkage with the Finnish Cancer Registry. Occupations from the population census in 1970 were converted to exposures to eight organic dusts with a job-exposure matrix (FINJEM). Cumulative exposure (CE) was calculated as a product of prevalence, level, and estimated duration of exposure. Standardised incidence ratios (SIR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusted for age, period, and social class were calculated for each organic dust using the economically active ...
that construction workers want more emphasis placed on the dangers of construction dust.. More than 600 people working within the construction industry took part in the survey. Of the 600 respondents, 61 per cent were health and safety advisors for the sector.. The survey aimed to shed a light on the health problems surrounding construction dust and how they can be managed.. In the UK, 500 people working within the construction industry die from lung cancers as a result of silica dust. As well as cancer, construction dust can cause other diseases of the lungs such as asthma, silicosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.. In response to a question about how much of a priority the industry currently makes tackling dangers of construction dust, 44 per cent answered very little. Of the respondents, just 12.5 per cent believed that construction dust was a priority health issue.. As well as a lack of priority, the respondents also identified an inadequate awareness of the risks among ...
Question: How many dust storms have you seen? Do you have memories of a particular storm?. Answer: I see small dust devils pretty often - the conditions here make them possible. Sometimes they look like small tornadoes, a funnel cloud with debris in it. I was in a dust storm in the Sahara once. It came up so fast, we were sitting around after dinner, just relaxing and then we had to jump up and run into the tent. The sand was blowing hard and stinging my skin and eyes. Our Berber guide wrapped up in a blanket and huddled near the tent; he said that it was his tradition to stay outside in it. They had stories of camels and tents being buried by the sand. The storm cleared in a few hours and then the night was beautiful, clear skies full of stars.. Question: What tips do you have to someone that comes face to face with a dust storm?. Answer: Take cover if possible. Try to protect your breathing (wet bandana, dust mask).. Question: What is one thing youve learned (important lesson) that you would ...
The dust particles may not seen with clear eye and may seem harmless at first sight, but the fact is that these are harmful for the respiratory system and lungs of human body, as they cause asthma and various inter-body allergies. Some harmful consequences of dust particles are -. The basic harm caused by the dust particles are asthma and allergies. The intensity of the allergies depends upon the amount of dust inhaled. If these are inhaled deeply, the harm can be chronic. Another factor is the length of exposure to the dust particles. But the main factor to be noticed is the pathway of inhalation. If the dusty air is inhaled by nose, it will start its effect from the nose to the lungs and if it is done by mouth, then your food pipe along with the respiration pipe is in danger.. ...
Dust observations made by GLOBE can help scientists in several ways. Your observations provide direct evidence of a dust storm in your area. Scientists can use YOUR OBSERVATIONS to check if their models have done a good job to predict these dust storms. In addition, your data will be used to verify satellite observations. Dust products from satellites are often compared to other independent data sources, such as ground monitors and aircraft measurements. Your GLOBE observations can be part of the ground truth data set. This is VERY IMPORTANT to help communities prepare and avoid harmful impacts of dust storms. Your observations with scientists help alert or tell students or people with asthma when to stay indoors or even let farmers and ranchers know which days would be better to till their land. Your observations also help warn construction workers when to wear protective equipment to reduce risks of Valley fever infection. Truck drivers can plan their trips to avoid roadblocks and costly ...
Abstract. North African dust reaches the southeast United States every summer. Measurements taken in Miami, Florida indicate that more than one-half of the surface dust mass concentrations reside in particles with diameters less than 2.1 μm, while vertical profiles of micropulse lidar depolarization ratios show dust reaching above four km during pronounced events. These observations are compared to the representation of dust in the MERRA-2 aerosol reanalysis and closely-related GEOS-5 Forward Processing (FP) aerosol product, both of which assimilate satellite-derived aerosol optical depths using a similar protocol and inputs. These capture the day-to-day variability in aerosol optical depth well, in a comparison to an independent sun-photometer-derived aerosol optical depth dataset. Measured near-surface dust mass concentrations slightly exceed model values, with most of the modeled dust mass in diameters between 2-6 μm. Modeled-specified mass extinction efficiencies equate light extinction ...

The productivity of the Amazon rainforest is constrained by the availability of nutrients, in particular phosphorus (P). Deposition of long-range transported African dust is recognized as a potentially important but poorly quantified source of phosphorus. This study provides a first multiyear satellite-based estimate of dust deposition into the Amazon Basin using three dimensional (3D) aerosol measurements over 2007-2013 from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP). The 7-year average of dust deposition into the Amazon Basin is estimated to be 28 (8~48) Tg a -1 or 29 (8~50) kg ha -1 a -1. The dust deposition shows significant interannual variation that is negatively correlated with the prior-year rainfall in the Sahel. The CALIOP-based multi-year mean estimate of dust deposition matches better with estimates from in-situ measurements and model simulations than a previous satellite-based estimate does. The closer agreement benefits from a more realistic geographic definition ...
large image from March 6, 2001 (2200 kb) While the northeastern United States experienced a major snowstorm, northeastern China was hit by yet another major dust storm yesterday and today (March 5 6, 2001). In these Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view (SeaWiFS) images of the area, clouds (white pixels) can easily be distinguished from the dust (light brown pixels). In the March 5 scene, the heaviest visible concentrations of dust are blowing southeastward from the Gobi Desert, between the Bohai Sea and the Mongolian border. South of the dust storm (in the lower left corner of the image), over the capital city of Beijing, there also appears to be a thick shroud of haze (greyish pixels), possibly from industrial emissions.. © 2019 The Author(s) 2019. Published by Oxford University Press. Many workers are daily exposed to occupational agents like gases/fumes, mineral dust or biological dust, which could induce adverse health effects. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, have been suggested to play a role. We therefore aimed to identify differentially methylated regions (DMRs) upon occupational exposures in never-smokers and investigated if these DMRs associated with gene expression levels. To determine the effects of occupational exposures independent of smoking, 903 never-smokers of the LifeLines cohort study were included. We performed three genome-wide methylation analyses (Illumina 450 K), one per occupational exposure being gases/fumes, mineral dust and biological dust, using robust linear regression adjusted for appropriate confounders. DMRs were identified using comb-p in Python. Results were validated in the Rotterdam Study (233 never-smokers) and methylation-expression associations were assessed using
It is currently difficult to obtain accurate fine dust information in residential areas due to the insufficient number of air quality monitoring systems and spatial imbalances. Therefore, a detailed particulate matter dispersion model including factors such as land use and meteorological information was developed in this study and used to create fine dust concentration distribution maps. The fine dust concentration distribution maps currently available to citizens were compared with those obtained by dispersion modeling, and population distribution data were employed to compare the populations exposed to fine dust according to the two methods. The results of the existing method and the developed particulate matter dispersion model differed significantly. For instance, the PM2.5 concentrations in Daejeon, South Korea, on February 17, 2018, were 56% “Good” and 44% “Moderate,” according to the existing method, while they were 31% “Good,” 26% “Moderate,” 28%
A dust mite allergy is in fact a reaction to proteins in the excretion of the dust mites. Yes, thats right, youre allergic to dust mite poo.. All homes in the UK have dust mites, but due to their tiny size (around 0.25-0.3mm) and translucent bodies they are almost invisible to the naked eye (dont worry - unless you have a dust mite allergy, they are harmless).. When the allergenic proteins are breathed in or make contact with the skin of an allergic person, their body reacts with symptoms - wheezing, sneezing, runny nose and soreness and redness of the skin and eyes.. Dust mites thrive in warm humid environments, our beds being one of their favourite spots. We spend about a third of our day in bed, shedding skin cells and creating moisture with our breath and bodies which the microscopic mites need to live on.. ...

An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal respirable dust monitor ( PDM) that gives realtime readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the miners cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram -level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the US. It has particular application for determining high source locations and efficiency of engineering means of suppression and other approaches to handling the problem. It has been recognised that the PDM s unique measurement
Studies have shown that dust bunnies are a mix of dust mites, pet hair, human skin sheds, decomposing insects, food remains, lint, and many other tiny particles. Moreover, dust bunnies can also collect volatile organic compounds from the chemical substances you use around the house, residues from smoking and cooking, as well as a high amount of heavy metals like arsenic and lead. All these particles are extremely dangerous to your health and can become very toxic in case of long-term exposure.. What is extremely dangerous about the dust bunnies is that they are formed in out-of-sight areas so you may not even realize you have them in your home. Although you clean your house regularly and you disinfect it thoroughly, chances are you have dust bunnies in places you can hardly see and reach. Most of the dust bunnies are formed underneath the beds and other pieces of furniture, in the corners of your rooms, on window sills, or between the stairs.. ...

Abstract. The significant impact of dust deposition on heterotrophic bacterial dynamics in the surface oligotrophic ocean has recently been evidenced. Considering the central role of bacteria in the microbial loop, it is likely that dust deposition also affects the structure and the functioning of the whole microbial food web. In the frame of the DUNE project, aiming to estimate the impact of dust deposition on the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea through mesocosm experiments, the main goal of the present paper was to assess how two successive dust deposition events affect the dynamics of the microbial food web. The first dust seeding delivered new P and N to the amended mesocosms and resulted in a pronounced stimulation of bacterial respiration. It also induced pronounced, but transient, changes in the bacterial community composition. No significant effects were observed on the abundances of viruses and heterotrophic nanoflagellates. The second dust seeding also delivered new P and N to the ...

The study was conducted among 92 male workers, divided into two groups depending on workplace and level of inorganic dust containing free crystalline SiO2 in the work environment, and 43 healthy workers without exposure to dust aerosols. The measured inhalable and respirable dust concentrations, as well as the concentration of free crystalline silica (FCS) in the respirable fraction were different for the two groups, but the percentage of free crystalline silica in the respirable fraction was almost identical. Significantly higher neopterin levels were found in workers exposed to dust, compared to the control group: 12.72 nmol/L and 6.32 nmol/L respectively (p,0.05). No significant difference was found between serum neopterin levels in both groups of the exposed workers. Among the groups with different length of service, a statistically higher neopterin level was evident only in the workers with length of service less than 10 years (p,0.05). The correlation analysis did not find a significant ...

One study in particular examined dust emission during the cutting of polyurethane-impregnated bandages in a hospital environment.1 When hospital staff removed splinting bandages with a power saw, a large amount of dust was generated. While the PU-impregnated bandage produced a lower airborne dust concentration than other bandage materials, the size and nature of the dust became a concern.. Like all particles, their aerodynamic diameters determine if and for how long they remain airborne, their likelihood of being inhaled, and their site of deposition in the respiratory system [respirable dust].6. In the studys findings, 90% of the particles in the dust cloud generated by the PU-impregnated bandage were considered respirable and contained fragments of PU resin.. In another study, laboratory rodents where exposed by inhalation to polyurethane foam particles (20 mg/m3) for 5 days/week for 6 weeks.2. Early findings showed the particles had deposited in the respiratory bronchi and in the subpleural ...
Abstract. The main objectives of this research were to determine what aerosols were present by taking total dust (TD) samples and thoracic particulate mass samples (TPM) on farms and in grain elevators. Cascade impactors were used to characterize size distribution of dust and endotoxins at each site. Total dust concentrations on farms had a geometric mean 3.4 mg/m3 and 3.3 mg/m3 in elevators. The geometric mean (GM) concentrations for the TPM were 2.4 mg/m3 on farms and 1.0 mg/m3 in elevators. Endotoxin concentrations as geometric means were alarming at 3,175 EU/m3 total dust and 983 EU/m3 by TPM on farms. In elevators, the GM concentrations for endotoxins were 2,534 EU/m3 total dust and 526 EU/m3 by TPM. The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) for endotoxins on farms was 8.0 mm and 6.5 mm in elevators. The paired t-test was applied to the log radios of endotoxin concentrations (EU/m3) and dust concentrations (mg/m3), for paired samples of the TD and TPM. A higher content of endotoxin was ...

The high resolution stereo camera on board ESAs Mars Express captured this impressive upwelling front of dust clouds - visible in the right half of the frame - near the north polar ice cap of Mars in April this year.. It was one of several local small-scale dust storms that have been observed in recent months at the Red Planet, which is currently enduring a particularly intense dust storm season. A much larger storm emerged further southwest at the end of May and developed into a global, planet-encircling dust storm within several weeks.. The intensity of this major event means very little light from the Sun reaches the martian surface, a situation extreme enough that NASAs 15-year old Opportunity rover has been unable to recharge its batteries and call home: it has been in hibernation mode since mid-June.. Dust storms on Mars occur regularly during the southern summer season when the planet is closer to the Sun along its elliptical orbit. The enhanced solar illumination causes stronger ...
Best Vacuum Cleaners. We have all used a vacuum cleaner at one point in our lives. We have also seen other people use it to clean either a floor carpet, couches or even a car. This is because of the way they have become an integral part when it comes to indoor cleaning. The first vacuum cleaner was invented in 1869 as a hand pumped cleaner. We have witnessed growth in technology and the vacuum cleaner being made into a high-tech cleaning equipment. Normally, vacuum cleaners have not been made the same way. This is due to the fact that there are different brands in the market that bring about the difference. It is wise for a buyer to consider some of the below factors in determining the best vacuum cleaner. The main factor to look at is the suction power of a vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners have been made to work in a way that the suction works as a result of a built-in motor. A strong motor increases the suction power of a vacuum cleaner thus increasing its effectiveness in dust and dirt ...
Dear colleagues, a dedicated AEROCOM-DUST analysis is a good idea and is quite timely considering the ever-increasing interest in dust aerosol, and I would be happy to contribute. I agree with Michael that some new experiments would be needed, which obviously have to be carefully designed. To have Paul lead a working group on this is great. I suggest to also include Stephanie Woodward from the Hadley Center in this exercise. ([email protected]). After having looked at the WIKI page, here are some additional comments: - What is the best choice for an anthropogenic dust source? While the estimates for total anthropogenic dust contribution to total dust are now considerably lower compared to the IPCC 2001 number, this emission and the geographical distribution is still very uncertain. In addition to direct anthropogenic dust sources as from agricultural soil disturbance it would be nice to have a second order anthropogenic dust source that is caused by anthropogenic climate change, ie ...

Satellite data estimate a high dust deposition flux (approximately 18 g m(exp-2 a(exp-1) into the northern South China Sea (SCS). However, observational evidence concerning any biological response to dust fertilization is sparse. In this study, we combined long-term aerosol and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) measurements from satellite sensors (MODIS and SeaWiFS) with a 16-year record of dust events from surface PM10 observations to investigate dust transport, flux, and the changes in Chl-a concentration over the northern SCS. Our result revealed that readily identifiable strong dust events over this region, although relatively rare (6 cases since 1994) and accounting for only a small proportion of the total dust deposition (approximately 0.28 g m(exp-2 a(exp-1), do occur and could significantly enhance phytoplankton blooms. Following such events, the Chl-a concentration increased up to 4-fold, and generally doubled the springtime background value (0.15 mg m(exp-3). We suggest these heavy dust events ...

Wood dust is one of the oldest and one of the most common occupational exposures in the world. The present analyses examine the effect of lifetime exposure to wood dust in diverse occupational settings on lung cancer risk. We conducted two population-based case-control studies in Montreal: Study I (1979-1986) included 857 cases and two sets of controls (533 population and 1349 cancer controls), and Study II (1996-2001) comprised 736 cases and 894 population controls. Detailed job histories were obtained by interview and each job was evaluated by expert chemist-hygienists to estimate the likelihood and level of exposure to many substances, one of which was wood dust. Odds ratios (ORs) were computed in relation to different indices of exposure to wood dust, adjusting for several covariates including smoking. Three datasets were analysed: Study I with population controls, Study I with cancer controls, and Study II. The most frequently exposed occupations in our study population were in construction, timber

The 42-year-old attorney was caught in the dust cloud while fleeing the collapsing towers on Sept. 11, 2001. She died of sarcoidosis, a disease that causes inflammation and scarring in the lungs, on Feb. 10, 2002.. In explaining the reversal, Hirsch cited accumulated scientific research that concluded exposure to trade center dust can cause or contribute to sarcoidosis.. Mrs. Dunn-Jones exposure to World Trade Center dust on 9/11/01 contributed to her death and it has been ruled a homicide, Hirsch wrote. Mrs. Dunn-Jones has now been added to the list of people who died as a result of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.. The city puts the Sept. 11 death toll at the trade center at 2,750. Dunn-Jones will be listed on the Sept. 11 memorial when it opens in 2009, a spokeswoman for the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation said.. A class-action lawsuit has claimed that dozens of deaths have been caused by exposure to toxic trade center dust.. A study published this month by a Fire ...
Dust mites are a common cause of allergy problems. Dust mites live up to 4 months. Each female can lay 100 eggs. Dust mites eat dead skin flakes and produce waste called fecal pellets. One mite may produce 20 fecal pellets a day. The pellets remain long after the mite is gone. Allergy problems are mainly caused by these fecal pellets. Dust mites like to live in warm, moist places (temperature 20 to 25C, humidity above 50%). Anyone with a dust mite allergy should try to avoid them. This may decrease allergy problems and the need for medicine.. ...

By Sarah Dorsey Chief Leader. First-responders and others exposed to September 11 dust may be more susceptible to heart disease triggered by other health conditions they acquired from the disaster, researchers at Mount Sinai Medical Center announced March 20.. As principal investigator for the WTC CHEST program, Dr. Mary Ann McLaughlin studies the pulmonary effects of inhaling 9/11 particulate matter. Her group examined more than 800 September 11 first-responders between January 2011 and September 2013, and found links between breathing in the toxic dust and obstructive sleep apnea, which causes the upper airways to become blocked during sleep. The condition can strain the cardiovascular system and lead to high blood pressure and heart arrhythmias.. Dusts Side-Effects. The study found that those who breathed in the most toxic dust from the tower collapse were at highest risk for sleep apnea and also for post-traumatic stress disorder.. Study participants with PTSD had higher levels of a ...
