Lung function is a predictor of morbidity and mortality, and the chronic nature of lung function decline allows for preventive initiatives. Proinflammatory constituents of organic dust are considered a possible cause of compromised respiratory health. The aim of this systematic review was to reveal the impact of organic dust exposure on long-term change in lung function. The literature search was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. Predefined criteria concerned study design: longitudinal, ≥1 year follow-up, ≥50 exposed; exposure measures: organic dust, measured or estimated, in different occupational settings; and outcome measures: change in lung function measured by spirometry. Orbital hand sanders are extensively used in woodworking processes. The dust from these sanders is generally not controlled although some are equipped with dust removal capabilities. However, even the sanders having dust removal do not effectively control the wood dust generated by the sanding operation. Therefore, a new control approach was developed. A Dust Control Plenum was designed and tested on an orbital sander.(See ILLUSTRATION) The plenum fits between the sanding pad and the sander body and has a series of exhaust slots along its edges. An exhaust connection on the top of the sander pad connects the plenum with a vacuum source. Laboratory tests show that the plenum reduces wood dust emissions by approximately 90 percent. In December 1995 we took dust samples from nine pairs of pillows and analysed them for Der p I. Each pair consisted of one feather filled pillow and one filled with polyester fibre; these had been used together on the same adult bed for more than six months to ensure that the environmental exposures of the pillows in each pair were similar. The pillow fillings were encased in closely woven cotton fabric. Two of the subjects in our study slept with the polyester filled pillow on top, four with the feather filled pillow on top, and three had no preference. The productivity of the Amazon rainforest is constrained by the availability of nutrients, in particular phosphorus (P). Deposition of long-range transported African dust is recognized as a potentially important but poorly quantified source of phosphorus. This study provides a first multiyear satellite-based estimate of dust deposition into the Amazon Basin using three dimensional (3D) aerosol measurements over 2007-2013 from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP). The 7-year average of dust deposition into the Amazon Basin is estimated to be 28 (8~48) Tg a -1 or 29 (8~50) kg ha -1 a -1. An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal respirable dust monitor ( PDM) that gives realtime readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the miners cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram -level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the US. Results from studies of the retention of contrasting mineral dusts inhaled by rats (for periods of up to three months) and the resultant changes in the phagocyte defence system of the deep lung were examined. The dusts used were titanium dioxide (relatively innocuous) and quartz (relatively toxic). The parameters assessed included the accumulation of material in the lung and lymph nodes during chronic exposure and the associated leukocyte response as assessed by broncho-alveolar lavage. The principal findings were that: (a) low level exposure to titanium dioxide produced no measurable inflammation (as indicated by neutrophil recruitment) but higher concentrations (30, 50, and 90 mg/m3) caused the transfer of dust to lymph nodes and first evidence of inflammation; and (b) for quartz, there was a more prominent response and earlier transfer of material to the lymph nodes.
