An apparent heroin overdose has Wyoming County Emergency Medical Services using intranasal naloxone for the first time. According to the Attic Police Department, the Attica Fire Department was dispatched to 17 Exchange St., Apt. #2, Attica, for a reported heroin overdose Thursday evening. Attica Police officer Stephanie Previty responded and found a 24-year-old Attica resident, unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. Officer Previty administered CPR until the Attica Fire Department EMS personnel arrived on scene. Department personnel verified the overdose and administered a new protocol of intranasal naloxone. Intranasal naloxone is a new medical option in the community overdose prevention program. It is used as a proactive response to heroin and other opiate drug overdoses that typically result in lethal outcomes. This is the first use of the drug in Wyoming County since the inception of the program. The victim was revived and conscious while being transported to Wyoming County Community Hospital after the

Yesterday the Office of National Drug Control Policy urged that first responders be equipped with naloxone, a medication used to counteract opiate overdoses. Some states already have laws on the books to do just that.. In a CSG research brief posted yesterday, CSG examined laws passed by states to increase access to naloxone, sometimes known by its brand name Narcan. Twenty-one states and D.C. have passed laws that increase access to naloxone and provide civil immunity to persons administering the antidote or reduce the fear of criminal repercussions for overdose victims and bystanders when they report an overdose.. CSG also surveyed legislation introduced so far in states 2014 sessions and found seven new states moving to adopt these harm reduction laws and another seven looking to amend their current laws.. A CSG infographic provides a quick overview of facts about overdose deaths along with an interactive map of state harm reduction laws and pending legislation. CSG Resources:. ...
Opioid-related deaths rates in the United States continue to rise. A decades-long US prescription drug epidemic persists, driven by high rates of per capita opioid analgesic dispensing, and is now paired with a growing availability of illicit heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl derivatives. Rates of opioid use disorders, opioid treatment admissions, opioid-related emergency department (ED) and hospital admissions, and overdose mortality have all steadily increased since 1990.8 In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that for every unintentional overdose death related to an opioid analgesic, 9 people were admitted for substance abuse treatment, 35 visited EDs, 161 reported drug abuse or dependence, and 461 reported nonmedical uses of opioid analgesics.10 Recent federal and state reform efforts seek to bolster a public health response to opioid use disorders and overdose deaths.14,50 The availability and dissemination of core evidence-based interventions that treat and ...
Ohio is in the middle of a drug overdose epidemic, not an opioid epidemic or an opioid crisis. Fentanyl and powerful variants, such as carfentanil, are killing large numbers of users of cocaine, meth and other drugs.. The states narrow emphasis on heroin users and opioid addiction has missed a major reshaping of drug overdose death in the last three years. Ohio has a drug overdose epidemic - not an opioid use epidemic - and the problem is a broadly contaminated supply of prohibited drugs.. Harm Reduction Ohio has tied Ohios large increase in overdose death since 2015 to the spread of fentanyl and its analogs into Ohios cocaine and meth supply. A focus on reducing the contamination and adulteration of Ohios illegal drug supply is the key to the immediate reduction of overdose death, not a focus on opioid addiction, an important - but secondary issue - in an epidemic of overdose death.. In Ohio, 11.2% of Ohio cocaine had fentanyl or an analog in it in 2017, according to a Harm Reduction Ohio ...
Easy-to-use technology provides alternative to injectable form of lifesaving medication.. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, is pleased to announce that intranasal naloxone -a nasal spray formulation of the medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose - has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The new technology has an easy-to-use, needle-free design, providing family members, caregivers and first responders with an alternative to injectable naloxone for use during a suspected opioid overdose.. The new technology will be marketed by Adapt Pharma Limited, a partner of Lightlake Therapeutics Inc. NIDA and Lightlake, a biopharmaceutical company developing novel treatments for addiction, entered into a partnership in 2013 to apply new technology towards developing a lifesaving intervention for opioid overdose. The product will be marketed under the brand name NARCAN® Nasal Spray.. In 2013, more than 16,000 ...

Acetaminophen-cysteine adducts (APAP-CYS) are a specific biomarker of acetaminophen exposure. APAP-CYS concentrations have been described in the setting of acute overdose, and a concentration |1.1 nmol/ml has been suggested as a marker of hepatic injury from acetaminophen overdose in patients with an ALT |1000 IU/L. However, the concentrations of APAP-CYS during therapeutic dosing, in cases of acetaminophen toxicity from repeated dosing and in cases of hepatic injury from non-acetaminophen hepatotoxins have not been well characterized. The objective of this study is to describe APAP-CYS concentrations in these clinical settings as well as to further characterize the concentrations observed following acetaminophen overdose. Samples were collected during three clinical trials in which subjects received 4 g/day of acetaminophen and during an observational study of acetaminophen overdose patients. Trial 1 consisted of non-drinkers who received APAP for 10 days, Trial 2 consisted of moderate drinkers dosed
Can you overdose on clonazepam - Can you overdose on clonazepam even if you have been on them for years? Yes. You can overdose on any medication. Clonazapam can cause drowsiness and in some instances slow breathing to dangerous levels.
The post-incarceration overdose death rates of heroin-dependent people in the U.K. are truly appalling. Everybody knows that drugs are readily available in prison, but this is an urban myth that has been conclusively disproved by careful research. In reality, most addicts cant get drugs in prison and as a result their tolerance wanes. When released, they take drugs at their former dose levels, putting themselves at high risk of overdose.. The Guardian reports that widespread naloxone provision upon prison release is being considered in the U.K. Naloxone is an inexpensive opiate antagonist that will reverse the acute effects of opiate overdose (e.g., suppressed respiration). The benefits are temporary and the underlying addiction remains intact, but the extra 30-60 minutes of time (and oxygen) the drug provides to an overdosed opiate user can prove life saving. President Obamas national drug control strategy endorsed expanding access to naloxone among public health and safety professionals, ...
A review of the scientific literature about baclofen overdoses shows that they are uncommon and rarely cause death. This in spite of baclofen being used already for decades to treat millions of people with incurable and often progressive neurological problems such as multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries.. The best reviews of baclofen overdoses are those based on review of comprehensive toxicology service databases. These give the truest picture of the spectrum of baclofen overdoses. The other data comes from case reports or reports of small series but will tend to represent more severe or unusual cases.. A 2006 Australian review of baclofen overdoses1 reported on a toxicology database of an unidentified region of Australia with a population of 500,000. A search of their database of presentations from 1992-2003 found 23 baclofen overdoses in these 11 years. Eight overdoses (35%) were ingestions of baclofen alone, three of which required ventilator support. There were no deaths.. The other ...
Tylenol #3 overdose; Phenaphen with codeine overdose; Tylenol with codeine overdose. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and codeine is a prescription pain medicine. It is an opioid pain reliever used only for pain that is severe and is not helped by other types of painkillers.. Acetaminophen and codeine overdose occurs when someone takes more than the normal or recommended amount of this medicine, either by accident or on purpose.. At this point we dont have the data for 2021, we know up until October of 2020 that there were 259 fatalities due to overdoses.
On Oct. 6, 2014, the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), joined with the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT) and American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT), to jointly publish a position statement advocating expanding the access to naloxone throughout the United States in the October 2014 issue of Clinical Toxicology.. Over the past three decades, drug overdose deaths in the United States have tripled and in 2008, unintentional poisoning deaths surpassed the number of motor vehicle deaths for the first time. Of the 38,329 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2010, 60 percent (22,134) were related to pharmaceuticals, with 75 percent of those deaths involving prescription opioid analgesics. Concurrently, heroin deaths have risen 55 percent between 2000 and 2010.. In overdose scenarios, opioids (including morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone and fentanyl) cause slowed breathing which can lead to hypoxia and, if untreated, death. Timely administration ...
While loath to admit it, one of the driving factors behind this heartbreaking epidemic is indeed prescription opioid use. Not only are the prescription drugs themselves contributing to the massive death toll, they are indirectly increasing the number of people who use street drugs like heroin. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that an estimated 80 percent of heroin users started out using prescription pain-killers.. In other words, opioid pain-killers are not just responsible for the deaths of people who overdose on a prescription drug, they are also responsible for the deaths of an overwhelming majority of heroin users.. As Amy Goodman from Democracy Now! reports, its been estimated that a staggering 52,000 people died from a drug overdose in 2015 - and over half of those deaths were related to opioid pain medications, heroin or fentanyl. Goodman explains further, To put the death toll in perspective, opioid deaths have surpassed the peak in death by car crash in 1972, AIDS deaths ...

Suicides and opioid overdoses have both become much more common over the last two decades, and may be driving the recent decline in US life expectancy.. Now, a study co-authored by School of Public Health researchers shows that workplace injury significantly raises a persons risk of suicide or overdose death.. The study, published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, found that an injury serious enough to lead to at least a week off of work almost tripled the combined risk of suicide and overdose death among women, and increased the risk by 50 percent among men.. These findings suggest that work-related injuries contribute to the rapid increase in deaths from both opioids and suicides, says study senior author Leslie Boden, professor of environmental health. Prior research has shown that injured workers are at increased risk of depression, have been treated frequently with opioids, and have suffered long-term earnings losses. This led us to wonder whether workplace injuries led to ...
PUEBLO - Pueblo County has the highest rate of fatal heroin overdoses in Colorado.. This column by ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight was published February 6, 2014 on The Washington Times website.. Drug overdoses are in the news again with the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman. The 46-year-old actor was found dead on Sunday in his Manhattan office-apartment of an apparent drug overdose. Investigators found a large quantity of heroin and prescription medications.. Heroin abuse is on the rise, and so is the abuse of a variety of prescribed narcotics, or opioids.. Overdoses linked to opioid-based prescription drugs, such as oxycodone, have more than quadrupled since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out why.. There was a fourfold increase in opioid sales between 1999 and 2010, which corresponds to our fourfold increase in overdose deaths involving opioid pain relievers, said Christopher M. Jones, team leader of the prescription-drug overdose team in the CDCs National Center for Injury Prevention ...

The number of opioid prescriptions filled in US pharmacies has tripled since the early 1990s, skyrocketing from 76 million in 1991 to 219 million in 2001.1 During this time period, emergency department visits from opioid misuse or abuse and opioid-related drug overdose deaths also rose sharply.. Continuing the upward trajectory, emergency department visits attributable to opioids increased from 600,000 to more than 1.2 million from 2004 to 2010, and overdose deaths have quadrupled from 4000 to more than 12,000 annually from 1999 to 2010, according to data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.2. As a result many states are enacting legislation to ensure appropriate, safe opioid prescribing, said Brett Badgley Snodgrass, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, of Comprehensive Primary Care in Bartlett, Tennessee.. Safe prescribing is of utmost importance, primarily to decrease diversion and abuse, but also to make it as safe and appropriate for our patients, she said.. To ensure safe ...

Project FUTURE is a comprehensive strategy to educate parents and children about the dangers of prescribed medicine, synthetic drugs, and other illegal drugs that are plaguing communities in West Virginia. The goal is for every child to live a life free from drug abuse, and we plan to achieve that goal through education, enforcement, and proper medication disposal.. The consequences of medicine abuse have increased dramatically, causing the death toll from pain pills to triple over the past decade. Every day in America 2,500 teens use a prescription drug to get high for the first time. Due to this alarming trend more accidental deaths are now caused by drug overdoses than by car accidents. West Virginia is ranked #1 in the nation for drug overdose deaths, making West Virginia ground zero for this nationwide epidemic. Every 9.5 hours, someone dies in West Virginia of a drug overdose.. Synthetic drugs, including fentanyl and carfentanyl, are a silent and deadly threat, hence the need for more ...
Carrboro Police have once again used naloxone to reverse a drug overdose.. Police say officers were called to a reported heroin overdose just before 10 oclock Friday night where authorities found an unconscious subject.. A release says an officer then administered naloxone, which allowed the patient to regain consciousness, according to police. The subject then walked to a waiting ambulance for continued treatment.. This is the fourth time Carrboro Police have used the life-saving drug to reverse an overdose. The first reversal was in January 2015.. Orange County was honored in late 2015 for the Naloxone Project, which was pushed forward through work from the Orange County Health Department.. Police continue to asked that you call 911 if you suspect someone is in an overdose state and remain with the individual until assistance arrives. Carrboro Police Captain Chris Atack says the priority for officers in those situations in public health and not bringing charges related to the illegal drugs ...
According to independent investigators who investigated the cause of his death, the officer was video-recorded pocketing fentanyl from a Lewiston patrol car dash camera during the arrest of a suspect named Jamil Dabson.. Dabson was the passenger of a taxi pulled over by a Maine State Police trooper, who pulled him over because his headlights were off at night.. The trooper then searched Dabson for drugs and found 86 grams of fentanyl bricks in Dabsons possession.. Dabson allegedly attempted to flee the scene, according to News Week.. According to the independent investigators, Meserve is said to have slipped some of the drug evidence into his pants pocket as he assisted fellow officers who were picking up fentanyl Dabson had thrown to the ground.. The Lewiston Police Department said it was unaware of Meserves drug problems, according to Lewiston Police Chief Brian OMalley.. All members of the Lewiston Police Department cooperated with the investigation, which disclosed that no officers had ...

Mandy, a 9 ½ year old very beloved lab mix, came in to Animal Hospital of North Asheville in the evening of June 4, 2012 as an emergency. Mandy had found a bottle of Phenobarbital tablets that had just been purchased at the drug store for Mindy, one of the other dogs in the family.
Opioids can bind to brain receptors that are responsible for breathing, causing hypoventilation, and all too frequently leading to death in those that overdose. Naloxone (aka Narcan) is an antidote that prevents opioids from binding to brain receptors, but when a person does overdose its often too late for them to administer the life-saving drug themselves, as they may be incapacitated.. Now, researchers at Purdue University have developed a smart system, which includes an implantable naloxone-releasing device, that can automatically halt an overdose without anyones intervention.. The antidote is always going to be with you, said Hyowon Hugh Lee, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Purdue, and one of the authors of the study appearing in Journal of Controlled Release. The device wouldnt require you to recognize that youre having an overdose or to inject yourself with naloxone, keeping you stable long enough for emergency services to arrive.. ...
