Drosera rupicola is a tuberous perennial species in the genus Drosera that is endemic to Western Australia. It produces 3 to 5 semi-erect lateral stems that grow up to 15 cm long. The turbinate tuber and mobile lamina that are capable of folding over prey distinguish it from all other members of the section Stolonifera. It is native to a large inland region from Pithara to south-east of Hyden. It grows in loamy soils near granite outcrops and flowers from July to October. It was first formally described by N. G. Hello Phil. I too have considered the possiblility that these D. f. var. tracyi plants are introduced by man. They are in a very remote location and the colony seems well established, covering most of the suitable habitat which is blocked on two sides by dry, unsuitable soil and terminates in other directions by occasional flooding by the pond. The higher ground has more var. tracyi and fewer filiformis while the wetter end is the opposite. The red D. filiformis does occur over suitable habitat around the entire perimeter of this pond. There is still about 25% of this extensive habitat, which covers over 2 miles of ponds and seeps, that I have not explored which I plan to complete later on. My understanding is the man made hybrid of D filiformis X tracyi is sterile. We were looking at these and could not find variants that appeared to be backcrosses. Only three distinct types could be found. The tracyi, the red filiformis and the intermediate which in all examples appeared to be half and half ...

The slender leaf sundew (Drosera linearis) is a carnivorous plant that lives in boggy areas with nitrogen-poor soil. Their main diet consists of mosquitoes and other small insects, which they trap using sticky hair-like structures on their leaves. It can take the plant as little as 15 minutes to kill the mosquito, but they digest their insect prey for up to 2 weeks! Each of the tentacle-like hairs on their leaves has a gland which produces three different components: nectar (to attract the insects), adhesive (to trap the insects), and enzymes (to digest the insects). The glands are similar in Sarracenia, concentrated just below the level of the liquid in the tube. I have a couple of Sarracenia flava plants with pitchers that reach about 45cm. tall, that catch wasps in the conservatory - although the wasps sometimes manage to bite through the wall of the pitcher and escape. Do your pitchers amplify the buzzing of trapped insects, like the old gramophone trumpets? I can be quite gruesome. I also have some Pinguicula plants with sticky leaves like flypaper, which are excellent for catching those little black mushroom flies that hatch out of potting compost, and a very old, large Drosera binata plant which has a mass of sparkling sticky tentacles that are very efficient at catching larger flies.. Canonical discriminant analysis is a dimension-reduction technique related to principal component analysis and canonical correlation. The methodology that is used in deriving the canonical coefficients parallels that of a one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). MANOVA tests for equality of the mean vector across class levels. Canonical discriminant analysis finds linear combinations of the quantitative variables that provide maximal separation between classes or groups. The skill of seasonal precipitation forecasts is assessed worldwide -grid point by grid point- for the 40 year period 1961-2000, considering the ENSEMBLES multimodel hindcast and applying a tercile-based probabilistic approach in terms of the ROC Skill Score (ROCSS).
