Uterine adenosarcoma, also adenosarcoma of the uterus, and Müllerian adenosarcoma of the uterus, is an uncommon form of cancer that arises from mesenchymal tissue of the uterus and has a benign glandular component. The most common presentation is vaginal bleeding. Other presentations include pelvic mass and uterine polyp. Generally, the clinical findings are non-specific. Uterine adenosarcoma have, by definition, a malignant stroma and benign glandular elements. The World Health Organization (WHO) criteria have a mitotic rate cut point; however, this is often disregarded, as bland-appearing tumours with a low mitotic rate are known to metastasize occasionally. Uterine adenosarcomas are typically treated with a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy (TAH-BSO). Ovary sparing surgery may be done in women wishing to preserve fertility. The prognosis is determined primarily by the cancer stage. Most tumours are discovered at an early stage and have a good prognosis, ...
Plant age- and plant stage-related changes in the resistance of rice, Oryza sativa, to its most important insect pest in the US, the rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus), were investigated in a series of field and greenhouse choice and no-choice studies. Rice plants were susceptible to infestation by rice water weevils over a broad range of plant ontogenetic stages, from at least the early vegetative stage to well into the reproductive stage. There was, however, a clear preference expressed by rice water weevils in both choice and no-choice experiments for plants in (or nearly in) the tillering stage of development, with pre-tillering and reproductive stage plants less preferred. The relationship between rice plant age and susceptibility to weevils is thus nonlinear. This study constitutes one of the most thorough studies to date of the relationship in a grass species between plant age and susceptibility to herbivores. The results provide a biological explanation for observed patterns ...

Bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) play an important role as disturbance agents in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex Lawson) forests of Arizona. However, from 2001 to 2003, elevated bark beetle activity caused unprecedented levels of ponderosa pine mortality. A better understanding of the population structure of these species will facilitate analysis of their dispersal patterns and improve management strategies. Here, we use fluorescently labeled amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) analysis to resolve genetic variation among and within sampling locations in northcentral Arizona of Ips pini (Say), Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte, and D. frontalis Zimmermann. We generated genetic fingerprints for ,500 beetle specimens and analyzed genetic diversity. For all species, gene flow estimates among sampling locations were high, and significant population subdivision was not discernible across a large portion of ponderosa pine forests in Arizona. However, a weak ...

Fertiloscopy provides with one minimally invasive, potentially office-based, procedure a clear diagnosis of two of the major causes of infertility in a way that makes it possible to make a rational choice at the start of infertility treatment.. The Fertiloscope is a type of laparoscope, modified to make it suitable for trans-vaginal application, which is used in the diagnosis and treatment of female infertility.. When indications are correct, Fertiloscopy can be considered a valid alternative to diagnostic laparoscopy. In fact, it uses the vaginal approach and requires relatively simple equipment. Moreover, it can be ...
We assessed the effect of two biological control agents, the mirid Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Carvalho) and the weevil Neochetina eichhorniae (Warner), singly or in combination, on the competitive ability of their host plant, water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laub., grown in a screen house, in competition with another aquatic plant (Pistia stratiotes L.). Water hyacinth plant growth characteristics measured included fresh weight, leaf and petiole lengths, number of inflorescences produced, and new shoots. Without herbivory, water hyacinth was 18 times more competitive than water lettuce (across all experimental combinations of initial plant densities), as estimated from fresh weights. Both insect species, singly or in combination, reduced water hyacinth plant growth characteristics. E. catarinensis alone was less damaging than the weevil and under normal conditions, i.e., floating water hyacinth, is not expected to increase control of water hyacinth beyond that of the weevil. ...
Other than retrograde menstruation, experts say that endometriosis may also be brought about by a few other factors. Some of them include a weakened immune system, environmental toxins and genetics.. Women with endometriosis may experience a host of unfavorable symptoms. It all depends on the conditions current stage, which is determined by the likes of location, depth, size and number. Some women with endometriosis may have mild symptoms only, while others have moderate to severe symptoms. Its important to note that the severity of the symptoms has nothing to do with the stage of endometriosis. For instance, a woman may have mild endometriosis only but may experience a great deal of pain.. Aside from pain in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation, others symptoms of endometriosis include pain after sexual intercourse, discomfort during bowel movements and heavy menstrual bleeding. A woman with endometriosis may also notice some blood in between periods. Sometimes, the condition may ...

Sheep Creek normally is a small stream. But on the night of June 9, 1965, it turned into a deadly torrent of water, dirt and rock racing down the canyon. The weather the previous month had been cool and wet, and slopes probably were saturated. That may have been why an old landslide gave way, likely undercut by Sheep Creek. Tons of wet sediment slid into the stream, accelerating its flow. The surge probably traversed the mile to Palisades Campground in just a few minutes. It scoured the canyon bottom, picking up more debris - mud, silt, sand, gravel, boulders and vegetation (Sprinkel & others 2000). This scenario is in part conjecture because no witnesses survived. The seven people in the campground died when their vehicle was swept downstream with the debris. ...

Judge Roger Highfield commented The Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine works brilliantly because medicine is ...
DOUGLAS, JAMES, doctor; b. 20 May 1800 at Brechin (Tayside), Scotland, son of George Douglas, a Methodist minister, and Mary Mellis; d. 14 April 1886 in New York City.. After serving a five-year apprenticeship under Dr Thomas Law of Penrith, England, James Douglas went in 1818 to study surgery in Edinburgh where there were highly renowned surgeons and medical schools. In March 1819, he enlisted as surgeon on a whaler and went to Spitsbergen, but resumed his studies in August and obtained his diploma as a surgeon from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in April 1820. During his training he had diligently taken the anatomy classes of dynamic young Robert Liston, as well as those of John Barclay, whose lively style of teaching Douglas appreciated. In May, having attended lectures in London by John Abernethy and Sir Astley Paston Cooper, he received a diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of that city. He spent a year in India, and upon his return in the autumn of 1822 accepted a ...
Exotic ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Doug. ex Lawson) plantations are being planted within the natural distribution area of cordilleran cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis (D.Don) Pic. Ser. et Bizzarri) in Patagonia, Argentina. The productivity of these exotic plantations is much greater than that of native forests, suggesting greater water use. Before these plantations become widespread, it is crucial to determine what effects ponderosa pine plantations may have on scarce water resources in the region. In the first study, I examined the seasonal variation in transpiration and soil water depletion for four forest stands: high and low density ponderosa pine plantations, and high and low density cordilleran cypress stands. Measurements were taken during two growing seasons with contrasting amounts of precipitation. Transpiration was greater in ponderosa pine than in cordilleran cypress stands of similar density. The high density ponderosa pine plot used a greater amount of water from deeper soil ...

Discussing the premise of the study, lead investigator Frédéric Amant (Leuven Cancer Institute, Belgium) commented: "We wanted to generate a clear view on the presence of targetable proteins in all subtypes of uterine sarcomas, with the aim of improving treatment options for these patients. Identifying biomarkers is crucial because novel treatments are expensive, underscoring the importance of patient selection.". The investigating team assessed five proteins in 288 samples of uterine sarcoma. In terms of subtypes, these samples included 157 leiomyosarcomas, 52 benign uterine stromal tumors and 41 normal uterine tissues. The remaining samples consisted of endometrial sarcomas, adenosarcomas and other undifferentiated types of uterine sarcoma.. These analyses uncovered that activated P-S6S240 is more often found expressed in high-grade tumors when compared with low-grade tumors - 32% vs 9%, respectively. Given that P-S6S240 is involved in the PI3K/mTOR cell signaling pathway, the team went on ...

Purpose of the study was to define the role of imaging modalities in the detection and characterization of pelvic floor hernias. A MEDLINE and PubMed search was performed and a comparison with our experience was made. Conventional radiology has a high sensitivity in detecting both the content and the development of pelvic floor hernias , especially the prevalence of enterocele, sigmoidocele, edrocele, elytrocele, and Douglas hernias. US has the advantage of not using ionizing radiation, but this method has several limitations in evaluating pelvic organs prolapse MRI defecography shows lower sensitivity than conventional radiology in the detection of both hernia content (enteroceles and sigmoidoceles) and hernia development (Douglas hernia, elytroceles, and edroceles). MRI shows lower sensitivity than conventional radiology in the detection of pelvic floor hernias development. The less-invasive MRI may have a role in a better evaluation of the entire pelvic anatomy and pelvic organ interaction ...

Gamma irradiation is known to inactivate various pathogens that negatively affect honey bee health. Bee pathogens, such as Deformed wing virus (DWV) and Nosema spp., have a deleterious impact on foraging activities and bee survival, and have been detected in combs. In this study, we assessed the effects of gamma irradiation on the flight activities, pathogen load, and survival of two honey bee stocks that were reared in irradiated and non-irradiated combs. Overall, bee genotype influenced the average number of daily flights, the total number of foraging flights, and total flight duration, in which the Russian honey bees outperformed the Italian honey bees. Exposing combs to gamma irradiation only affected the age at first flight, with worker bees that were reared in non-irradiated combs foraging prematurely compared to those reared in irradiated combs. Precocious foraging may be associated with the higher levels of DWV in bees reared in non-irradiated combs and also with the lower amount of pollen

The ability to detect painful stimuli is essential to our health and survival as it allows us to avoid contact with agents that injure us. Using the chemical capsaicin, a component of chili pepper, he investigated how it can cause intense pain when applied to the skin. In a landmark 1997 publication, he reported the discovery of the pain sensing receptor that detects capsaicin. The receptor is an ion channel, and binding of this channel by Capsaicin causes the channel to open and leads to influx of cations that transmit signals to the neurons through the spinal cord and to the brain. This channel, now called TRPV1, belongs to the transient receptor potential cation channel, TRP family of ion channels, whose members are structurally related but serve different functions. In addition to pain, Julius found that TRPV1 is also activated by temperatures above 43 °C, which are perceived as painful providing another protective mechanism for us. Interestingly, he found that birds have a TRPV1 with a ...
The objective of the research was to investigate the potential of foliar S:N ratios in Ponderosa pine as bioindicators of foliar sulfur loading in areas of long-term exposure to low levels of sulfurous air pollutants. First it was necessary to document seasonal variation in S:N ratios in trees not exposed to air pollution. Fifteen Ponderosa pines were selected at a site remote from urban and industrial sources of air pollution and the trees sampled at 18 intervals over a 15 month study period. Significant differences in sulfur and nitrogen concentrations occurred among the five needle age groups within most collections. One-year-old needles contained significantly more sulfur than other needles. Current-year needles contained more nitrogen than the three and four-year-old needles. Within each foliar age class significant differences in total sulfur content and S:N ratios occurred throughout the season. Sulfur concentrations and S:N r ...

In February 1984, 2-yr-old bare-root Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings with symptoms typical of Phytophthora root rot (stunting, chlorosis, poor rootdevelopment) were infrequently found in a coastal forest nursery in southwest British Columbia. Phytophthora cryptogea Peth. & Laf. and P. drechsleri Tucker were isolated from diseased roots using cornmeal agar containing 20 μg/ml pimaricin. This nursery has relatively heavy (clay) soils, characteristic of forest nurseries in Washington and Oregon with Phytophthora-root-rot problems. This is the first report of Phytophthora root rot in a forest nursery in British Columbia and extends the northern range of this disease on Douglas fir.. References: Hansen, E. M., et al. Plant Dis. In this study, we investigated whether XIST and 53BP1 expression, two potential markers of resistance to HD alkylating chemotherapy in BRCA1-deficient tumors identified in preclinical models (12, 13), could be used as predictive markers in breast cancer patients. We present early and preliminary evidence that high XIST expression or low 53BP1 expression could be used to identify BRCA1-like tumors that have early events and poorer outcome than BRCA1-like tumors that have low XIST and high 53BP1 expression.. The mechanism of loss of XIST expression seems to be through loss of the inactive X chromosome (12). We observed that the copy number profiles of some patients hinted at losing an X chromosome. However, we are unable to tell whether this is the inactive X chromosome and whether those without apparent loss may have copy number neutral DNA loss. These findings fit with the literature in which XIST expression, deregulation, and loss of the inactive X chromosome have been described in basal-like ...
Probably a native of Rome, Formosus was born around 816.[1] He became Cardinal Bishop of Porto in 864.[2] Two years later, Pope Nicholas I appointed him a papal legate to Bulgaria (866).[1] He also undertook diplomatic missions to France (869 and 872).[3] Upon the death of Louis the Pious in 875, the nobles elected his son by his second wife, Judith of Bavaria, Charles the Bald, King of the Franks to be the Holy Roman Emperor. Formosus conveyed Pope John VIIIs invitation for King Charles to come to Rome to be crowned emperor. Charles took the crown at Pavia and received the imperial insignia in Rome on 29 December. Those who favored the widowed Empress Engelberga or her brother-in-law, Louis the German, did not support the coronation. Fearing political retribution, many of them left Rome surreptitiously. Formosus, sensing he had somehow incurred the papal displeasure, went to Tours.[4] On April 19, John VIII called a synod which ordered Formosus and other papal officials to return to Rome. When ...
Limber pine (Pinus flexilis) mortality is increasing across the West as a result of the combined stresses of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola; WPBR), mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae), and dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium cyanocarpum) in a changing climate. With the continued spread of WPBR, extensive mortality will continue with strong selection against trees that lack genetic resistance to the disease. Naturally-occurring resistance to the non-native fungal pathogen C. ribicola is present in limber pine and is the cornerstone of restoration strategies. Disease resistance to native pathogens can carry a strong fitness cost to the host in the absence of the pathogen. However we suspect this to be unlikely in the case of resistance to a non-native pathogen as the resistance would not have persisted in the pre-invasion population. Genetic resistance to a novel stress which the species has not co-evolved may be neutral or carry a benefit to the host via a function that offers ...

Canopy arthropods and foliar nutrients were quantified during summer for Banksia menziesii, R. attenuata, B. ilicifolia and Nuytsia floribunda within a low woodland site at Jandakot Airport on the Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia. Foliar nutrients were higher for N. floribunda than any of the Banksia species. B. ilicifolia differed from the other two banksias in having lower nitrogen and phosphorus but higher potassium. Invertebrate densities were also higher for N. floribunda than any of the Banksia species, while densities on the three Banksia species were relatively similar, albeit with a few predominantly phytophagous taxa having a higher density on B. ilicifolia. These trends provide evidence that, as in other ecosystems where this has been studied, differing arthropod loads between tree species are related to variation in foliar nutrient levels. Tree usage by predominantly insectivorous birds may reflect the relatively low difference in arthropod loads between the three Banksia ...
The islands native plant communities include coastal grassland and coastal scrub, mostly on the islands south- and west-facing slopes and ridge tops, and evergreen woodland - predominantly of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), bay (Umbellularia californica), toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), and madrone (Arbutus menziesii), with California Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta) and Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum) in the understory - on the eastern and northern portions of the island sheltered from the westerly winds from the Golden Gate.[20] It is thought that the Coast Miwoks used regular fires to expand the grassland and shrublands at the expense of the woodlands. The grasslands and shrublands provided edible seeds and bulbs, and supported larger numbers of deer and small game.[20] The Angel Island Mole, Scapanus latimanus insularis, is a subspecies of Broad-footed mole endemic to Angel Island.[21] The military had planted 24 acres of Bluegum Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) on the island for ...

The evolution of weed biotypes resistant to multiple herbicide modes of action, here termed multiple herbicide resistance, is a growing problem around the world. We investigated two multiple herbicide resistant (MHR) wild oat (Avena fatua L.) populations from Montana and hypothesized that they would exhibit fitness costs compared with two herbicide-susceptible (HS) populations. Dose-response tests showed that the MHR populations were resistant to difenzoquat (a membrane disruptor), imazamethabenz (an acetolactate synthase [ALS] inhibitor), flucarbazone (an ALS inhibitor), and tralkoxydim (an acetyl-CoA carboxylase inhibitor). In greenhouse studies, we assessed differences between MHR and HS populations in seed germination, photosynthetic parameters, plant growth, and reproduction. Seeds of one HS population germinated more at cold temperature (4.9°C) and less at high temperature (29.6°C) compared with the other populations. Plants of this HS population also had lower stomatal conductance ...
Respond on two different days who selected different treatments and factors than you, in the following ways:. Offer alternative common treatments for the disorders.. Share insight on how the factor you selected impacts the treatment of alterations of digestive function.. Main Post. Many patients will present with disease processes that have the same or similar symptoms, and it will be the responsibility of the practitioner to diagnose and provide treatment accurately. The gastrointestinal tract is one area where misdiagnoses occur due to the common signs and symptoms. Inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome are two common misdiagnosed disorders that will be explored, the pathophysiology explained, proper treatment, and the effects gender has on these diseases.. Pathophysiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises three key disorders; Crohns disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and microscopic colitis all ...

Cured has to be a guarded term in dealing with any cancer.. Meibomian and sweat gland cysts, hyperplasias, tumors and chalazions are usually permanently cured by surgery. However, these lesions may occur in multiple glands of the eyelids, so there may be future problems. Other tumors of the haired eyelid behave similarly to those in the skin.. Conjunctival inclusion cysts can be totally cured by ablation of their epithelium. The most successful medical treatment for nodular fasciitis is the use of immunosuppressive drugs but many cases still recur and infiltrate the eye, which then requires removal.. Melanomas arising from the conjunctiva are malignant, usually recur and sometimes metastasize even if they are histologically benign. They behave like tumors of this type from the mouth. Squamous cell carcinomas invade locally but metastasis to the rest of the body only occurs very late in the disease so is rare. Adenocarcinoma of the gland of the third eyelid is a slow growing but locally ...
Background: Periodontal diseases are microbial induced chronic inflammatory conditions characterized by infiltration of leukocytes, loss of connective tissue, alveolar bone resorption, and formation of periodontal pockets. In response to periodontal pathogens, the leukocytes (PMN) elaborate destructive oxidants, proteinases and other factors. The balance between these factors, the antioxidants and endogenously synthesized antiproteinases determine the extent of periodontal damage. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder. Most of the complications of diabetes are due to hyperglycemia. Persons with diabetes are at a greater risk for periodontal disease Malnutrition is characterized by marked tissue depletion of antioxidant nutrients and impaired acute phase protein response to infections resulting in impaired healing. Diabetes mellitus also alters the micronutrient levels. Malnutrition is characterized by marked tissue depletion of antioxidant nutrients and impaired acute phase protein response ...
