Street-level green spaces support a key urban population of the threatened Hispaniolan Parakeet Psittacara chloropterus
While urbanisation remains a major threat to biodiversity, urban areas can sometimes play an important role in protecting threatened species, especially exploited taxa such as parrots. The Hispaniolan Parakeet Psittacara chloropterus has been extirpated across much of Hispaniola, including from most protected areas, yet Santo Domingo (capital city of the Dominican Republic) has recently been found to support the islands densest remaining population. In 2019, we used repeated transects and point-counts across 60 1 km2 squares of Santo Domingo to examine the distribution of parakeets, identify factors that might drive local presence and abundance, and investigate breeding ecology. Occupancy models indicate that parakeet presence was positively related to tree species richness across the city. N-Mixture models show parakeet encounter rates were correlated positively with species richness of trees and number of discrete green patches (, 100 m2) within the survey squares. Hispaniolan Woodpecker ...
The Feast of the Goat - Wikipedia
The Feast of the Goat (Spanish: La fiesta del chivo, 2000) is a novel by the Peruvian Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. The book is set in the Dominican Republic and portrays the assassination of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, and its aftermath, from two distinct standpoints a generation apart: during and immediately after the assassination itself, in May 1961; and thirty five years later, in 1996. Throughout, there is also extensive reflection on the heyday of the dictatorship, in the 1950s, and its significance for the island and its inhabitants. The novel follows three interwoven storylines. The first concerns a woman, Urania Cabral, who is back in the Dominican Republic, after a long absence, to visit her ailing father; she ends up recalling incidents from her youth and recounting a long-held secret to her aunt and cousins. The second story line focuses on the last day in Trujillos life from the moment he wakes up onwards, and shows us the regimes inner circle, to ...

Sugar a bittersweet tale of baseball dreams | Reuters
By James Greenberg PARK CITY, Utah (Hollywood Reporter) - The immigrant experience has been seen many times on film before, but rarely with the authenticity, wit and intelligence of Anna Boden and Ryan Flecks Sugar. The story of an aspiring young baseball player in the Dominican Republic, the film is more than a baseball story, but it will be a real delight for fans of the game. Several of the biggest stars in baseball -- Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz -- have come from the tiny Caribbean nation of the Dominican Republic, where every major league team operates a baseball academy for promising prospects. But the ones who make it to the big leagues, or even a successful minor league career in the States, are a very small percentage. Sugar is the story of a talented pitcher who doesnt make it all the way but learns some important life lessons along the way. Boden and Fleck, who brought a similar sense of reality to their debut film, Half Nelson, recruited mostly ballplayers who could
Advanced BioFuels USA » UN Event Focuses on Advanced Biofuels Development in Dominican Republic, Way to Fight Poverty
If you can imagine a future powered by sustainable food and fuels; if you can imagine a future where globalism means that appropriate technologies are employed where they work best to the globes greatest advantage; if you can imagine a future of cooperation and collaboration to work out humankinds tensions, then you see a future envisioned by Advanced Biofuels USA.. The future of the advanced biofuels industry is at a critical crossroads. In the US, the Renewable Fuel Standard has created a demand of 15 billion gallons/year of corn ethanol, an amount which covers about 10% of the US market and provides renewable octane by replacing carcinogenic MTBE. US and Brazilian sources have filled this demand. However, the US seems stuck on the 15 billion/year plateau providing no meaningful demand for advanced motor vehicle biofuels. Even the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has little impact since it has not been used by the government to push for more investment in advanced biofuels. Once corn ethanol ...

Vachellia farnesiana - Wikipedia
It was first described by Europeans under the name Acacia Indica Farnesiana in 1625 by Tobias Aldini from plants grown in Rome in the Farnese Gardens from seed collected in Santo Domingo, in what is now the Dominican Republic, which germinated in 1611. Tobias Aldini included an illustration of the plant, which he contrasted with an illustration of the first known Acacia; Acacia nilotica. This first (European) illustration of the plant was later designated as the (lecto-)type.[20][21] In 1753 Linnaeus used Aldinis work as basis for his taxon Mimosa farnesiana. In 1806 Carl Ludwig Willdenow moved this taxon to the genus Acacia.[1]. Partly due to its wide distributional range the taxon has attracted many synonyms. Especially in the United States the taxonomy has been confused. In 1809 Willdenow described Acacia acicularis from Central America collected and named during Humboldt and Bonplands scientific expedition to the Americas.[5] Acacia ferox was described in 1843 in Belgium from collections ...

EXPLAINER: Why are earthquakes so devastating in Haiti? - WATE 6 On Your Side
The powerful earthquake that hit Haiti on Saturday killed hundreds and injured thousands more. The destruction comes just 11 years after a temblor killed tens of thousands of people, if not hundreds of thousands. Some 100,000 buildings were destroyed in the 2010 quake. As rescuers search for survivors in the Caribbean nation, heres a look at why Haiti has had so many devastating earthquakes over the centuries and why they are often so devastating. ___. WHAT MAKES HAITI PRONE TO EARTHQUAKES? The Earths crust is made up of tectonic plates that move. And Haiti sits near the intersection of two of them - the North American plate and the Caribbean plate. Multiple fault lines between those plates cut through or near the island of Hispaniola, which Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic. Whats worse, not all of those fault lines behave the same way. Hispaniola sits in a place where plates transition from smashing together to sliding past one another, said Rich Briggs, a research geologist at the ...

Saving the last of the Critically Endangered Ricords Iguana - The Dodo
The municipal government in Anse-a-Pitres, Haiti, recently created a Municipal Protected Area, legally protecting 3,000 hectares of dry forest for the conservation of a small population of the Ricords iguana (Cyclura ricordii). One of only nine iguanas of its kind in the world, this species of large rock iguana has an extremely limited distribution. Only four small isolated subpopulations exist in the south-central part of the island of Hispaniola. Three of the subpopulations can be found in the Dominican Republic, where significant conservation efforts have taken place based on a Species Recovery Plan outlined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Iguana Specialist Group. The species was thought to be extinct in Haiti until Ernst Rupp, working with the International Iguana Foundation (IIF) and Grupo Jaragua, discovered a small strip of beach where a pregnant female was sighted. Ricords iguana nests were then found in Anse-à-Pitres in 2007 on the edge of the town, which ...

Sources of greater fetal vulnerability to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons among African Americans. - ccceh.org
Background: This study attempted to clarify the household and mothers lifestyle factors that contribute to the greater fetal vulnerability of African-American individuals to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).. Methods: Non-smoking pregnant women with no known risks of adverse birth outcome were monitored for their personal exposure to airborne PAH. Birth outcomes were collected from the hospital medical record. Modification of the airborne PAH effects was statistically examined. In linear regression analyses, modification of PAH effect by demographic, socioeconomic and behavioral traits on birth weight and fetal growth ratio were respectively tested, adjusting for the gestational age, gender, parity, delivery season, maternal body mass index and weight gained during the present pregnancy.. Results: Maternal obesity exacerbated the airborne PAH risk by −491 g per 25th to 80th percentile unit exposure (95% CI −197 to −786 g; p,0.01) among African Americans. In addition, ...

Speaking Spanish to Improve Dairy Cattle Reproduction | UGA Cooperative Extension
Spanish is really a neat language. It only takes three words to say Do you speak Spanish? (¿Habla usted Español?) verses four in English. Besides being spoken in Spain, Spanish is the official language of all the South American republics except Brazil and French Guyana, the six republics of Central America, as well as of Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. There are about 400 million people who speak Spanish worldwide. Pronunciation and usage of the spoken Spanish language naturally vary among countries, but regional differences are not so great. The Spanish language utilizes the Latin alphabet with a few special letters, including vowels with acute accents (á, é, í, ó, ú), dieresis u (ü) and n with a tilde (ñ). Letter combinations ch and ll are treated as single translation letters. For example, ll is pronounced Y. Both inflection and grammatical gender are important features of Spanish. The letter O at the end of a word is male and A is female in most ...
Project MUSE - Centering Animals in Latin American History
Centering Animals in Latin American History writes animals back into the history of colonial and postcolonial Latin America. This collection reveals how interactions between humans and other animals have significantly shaped narratives of Latin American histories and cultures. The contributors work through the methodological implications of centering animals within historical narratives, seeking to include nonhuman animals as social actors in the histories of Mexico, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Chile, Brazil, Peru, and Argentina. The essays discuss topics ranging from canine baptisms, weddings, and funerals in Bourbon Mexico to imported monkeys used in medical experimentation in Puerto Rico. Some contributors examine the role of animals in colonization efforts. Others explore the relationship between animals, medicine, and health. Finally, essays on the postcolonial period focus on the politics of hunting, the commodification of animals and animal parts, the protection ...

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street & the Bankers. In short, I was a Racketeer, a Gangster for Capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American Oil Interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti & Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank Boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the Raping of half a dozen Central American Republics for the Benefit of Wall Street. I helped Purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American Sugar Interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American Fruit Companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his Racket in three Districts. I operated on three Continents ...
Healthy Sports: 2011
The smell of freshly cut grass, the sound of a ball hitting a bat and the feel of a freshly oiled mitt all signify the beginning of baseball season. It is a ritual that evokes pleasant memories for many Americans. During the past week, I have come to realize that Haiti is no exception. Baseball has developed an international following beginning with exportation during World War II by American soldiers stationed abroad. Haiti has never been known as a center for the development of future baseball stars. In fact, there are no current professional baseball players from Haiti, yet a short trip over to the Dominican Republic reveals the largest number of foreign-born baseball players currently playing in the major leagues.. That may soon change. During my most recent trip to Haiti, I had a chance to work out with the Tabarre Tigers, a team of 20 boys from the streets of Port-au-Prince. They were first brought together by several Americans working as part of the Haitian relief effort through ...

Four photographers share their take on Willets Point through Loculars - Loculars is now part of the Leica family
Ayash Basu. For most people, there is little reason to wander around in Willets Point. Its dirty, smelly, unkept and some would say, unsafe. But if witnessing migrant workers fixing any car problem imaginable, in the most dire circumstances operating two hundred odd auto repair shops incites your fancy, then this place is not to be missed. Visually speaking, Willets Point is a cacophony of colors, textures brought about by innumerable auto parts and crumbling infrastructure, diversity of hard working men, and an array of lines, shapes and patterns. Interesting photos are therefore a given. More important however, are the insights and perspectives of Greg Brophy, which bring to life the stories and struggles of the Hispanic, Arab and Jewish owners of these auto shops that have been collectively fighting the seemingly inevitable $4billion redevelopment of Willets Point. Most of the 1200 plus workers come from Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, bringing with them their ...
Potentials for Beekeeping Expansion in the Caribbean
The advantage of increased beekeeping is that it is a small-scale farm and rural activity which can be established at low cost, and does not require private land ownership at all. In the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is by far the largest honey producer, with substantial production of beeswax, both of which move into the overseas market, generating hard currency. The recent development of pollen export in that country is another important source of foreign currency. A first step required is the development of a source of package bees and queens, and the needed hardware for hives and associated activities. A second and major step is to inventory the local nectar and pollen plants, as well as time of nectar flow. Bees make honey from nectar, not pollen as a forester erroneously reported in a U.S. Department of Agriculture report. The first author has prepared such a study for Puerto Rico, and a preliminary one for the Caribbean area.

Dengue serotypes and genotypes circulating in recent years in the Caribbean and imported to Europe
Introduction: Dengue viruses (DENV) are the most widespread arthropod-borne viruses endemic in the tropics and transmitted to humans through the bites of Aedes mosquitoes. Travelers can act as vectors to introduce DENV to uninfected areas or regions. Travelers can also serve as sentinels for ongoing outbreaks and dominating serotypes and genotypes in the source countries. We set out to describe the importation of dengue virus from the Caribbean via travelers to Europe.. Methods: From 2011 to 2014, we collected samples from viraemic travelers returning from the Caribbean with confirmed dengue to 11 TropNet clinics in Europe that are participating in the DengueTools project. Sequences of the Envelope gene were used to identify serotype and genotype.. Results: The main countries of importation were Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, Netherlands Antilles and Puerto Rico. All 4 DENV serotypes were identified. DENV 1 strains were grouped within genotype V creating a ...

The distribution of lionfish has spread from Florida south into the Caribbean. Since the early 2000s, lionfish have been documented in Bermuda and the Bahamas. Since the second half of 2007, they have spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean. Sightings have occurred in the Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, St. Croix (USVI), Haiti, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Dry Tortugas, Aruba, and Netherlands Antilles. They are now heading further southward into Mexican, Central, and South American waters.. So why does this matter? Lionfish are voracious predators that quickly adapt to eating new types of food, and they have no native predators in Atlantic or Caribbean waters. They are believed to be as abundant now as some native grouper species in the Atlantic Ocean. Lionfish have venomous dorsal, ventral, and anal spines that can deter predators and injure humans. They can reproduce year-round and are relatively resistant to parasites, giving ...

The Donor Sibling Registry (DSR) was created in September 2000, by Wendy Kramer and her son, Ryan. Certain that other donor offspring would have the same curiosity as Ryan about his genetic origins - yet also knowing that sadly, no public outlet existed for mutual consent contact between people born from anonymous sperm or egg donation, this site was started as the logical next step to making those connections.. In addition to the registered members, several thousand people check the site regularly. The DSR averages more than 16,000 unique visitors to the site each month and is a worldwide organization, matching people in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, S. Zika on the prowl: WHO declares emergency - Clat Possible
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Zika virus outbreak to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) last week. In the past few years, confirmed cases have been reported from Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela. While the disease has been exceedingly reported in South America, it is likely to spread its reach in other countries soon and its potential proliferation has also become a problem because of the huge crowds of people expected to attend the Olympic Games in Rio in the coming months. So what exactly is the Zika virus and why is it a huge health risk?. The virus traces its nomenclature to the Zika forest in Uganda, Africa, where it had been first identified in rhesus monkeys in 1947. While it was reported in humans in 1952, it was unknown to the Americas until last year. This virus is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito which is also responsible for the spread of dengue and ...
Zika Virus
Zika virus infections typically produce little-to-no symptoms , similar to dengue fever. Since the 1950s, Zika was considered a relatively benign healthcare issue confined within a narrow Africa-to-Asia equatorial belt.. Within just the past four years, however, Zika started spreading eastward across the Pacific Ocean in 2013 to French Polynesia, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, and Easter Island. In 2015, the virus expanded in to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, where the Zika outbreak has reached pandemic levels. Unfortunately, Zika-associated infection cannot be prevented or treated by any known vaccine or antimicrobial agent.. In response to the pandemic crisis, the CDC in January issued enhanced precautions for pregnant women including cautions against travelling to Zika infected areas. Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Jamaica have since taken unprecedented steps to advise women to postpone pregnancy until more is known about the risks ...

After Ebola, two other tropical diseases pose new threats - ARYNEWS
The spread of Ebola in West Africa last year shows how poorly-understood diseases can emerge and grow rapidly while researchers race to design and conduct the scientific studies needed to combat them.. Researchers in the journal Nature Microbiology called for a bacterial infection called meliodosis, which is resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, to be given a higher priority by international health organisations and policy makers.. At the same time, scientists at Britains Oxford University warned that a virus known as Zika, which is carried by mosquitoes and has caused a major outbreak in Brazil, has the potential of rapid spread to new areas.. Zika was first detected in Africa in the 1940s and was unknown in the Americas until last year, but has now been confirmed in Brazil, Panama, Venezuela, El Salvador, Mexico, Suriname, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Guatemala and Paraguay, according to public health officials.. (Used with permission from DECC (Department of Environment and Climate Change), undated. PO Box A290 Sydney South NSW 1232.). I first encountered the pied butcherbird five years ago in the outback of Western Australia. As a violinist/composer trained in the Western classical music tradition, I have spent much of the last 35 years transcribing music of the American vernacular, from fiddle tunes to jazz, from country to Cajun. Residencies in the Dominican Republic and Budapest saw me extend my research to music of the Caribbean and eastern European folk music. While some of these styles I actively performed in, more often the purpose of my research was to expand my toolkit as a composer and improviser. My expertise lay in transcription.. I determined to compile the song phrases of the pied butcherbird, a sort of ...
Frontiers | Caribbean Sea Soundscapes: Monitoring Humpback Whales, Biological Sounds, Geological Events, and Anthropogenic...
Assessing marine soundscapes provides an understanding of the biological, geological and anthropogenic composition of a habitat, including species diversity, community composition, and human impacts. For this study, nine acoustic recorders were deployed between December 2016 and June 2017 off six Caribbean islands in several Marine Parks: the Dominican Republic (DR), St. Martin (SM), Guadeloupe east and west (GE, GW), Martinique (MA), Aruba (AR), and Bonaire (BO). Humpback whale song was recorded at five sites on four islands (DR, SM, GE, GW, and MA) and occurred on 49-93% of recording days. Song appeared first at the DR site and began 4-6 weeks later at GE, GW, and MA. No song was heard in AR and BO, the southernmost islands. A 2-week period was examined for the hourly presence of vessel noise and the number and duration of ship passages. Hourly vessel presence ranged from low (20% - DR, 30% - SM), medium (52% - MA, 54% - BO, 77% - GE) to near continuous (99% - GW; 100% - AR). Diurnal patterns were

N2 - We performed a genomic search for linkage to autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa in a large pedigree obtained from the Dominican Republic using microsatellite markers. Regions of the genome known to contain genes for retinitis pigmentosa were preferentially tested. One of these regions, on chromosome 6p, which contains the gene for peripherin, gave positive lod scores. Use of a mononucleotide repeat polymorphism in the peripherin gene excluded this locus. Two- and multi-point analyses suggest that the most likely location for the disease gene is near D6S291, which is located approximately 20 centimorgans telomeric from peripherin.. Bill Viola presents for the first time in Europe his video Night Journey (2005) in the unique setting of the church of the convent of Santo Domingo, in Pollença (Mallorca, Spain). Evolving from an adaptation of the Opera Tristan und Isolde , in which the artist worked with director Esa Pekka Salonen, this video installation takes the exploration of spirituality that is a recurrent theme in Violas work to the sacred space of an old church. As one of the curators recalls in this interview, it was important for the artist to present this work in the particular setting of a church with a Mediterranean atmosphere.
