Cocker Spaniels are dogs belonging to two breeds of the spaniel dog type: the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel, both of which are commonly called simply Cocker Spaniel in their countries of origin. In the early 20th century, Cocker Spaniels also included small hunting Spaniels. Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as hunting dogs in the United Kingdom, with the term cocker deriving from their use to hunt the Eurasian woodcock. When the breed was brought to the United States, it was bred to a different standard, which enabled it to specialize in hunting the American woodcock. Further physical changes were bred into the cocker in the United States during the early part of the 20th century. Spaniels were first mentioned in the 14th century by Gaston III of Foix-Béarn in his work the Livre de Chasse. The cocking or cocker spaniel was a type of field or land spaniel in the 19th century. Prior to 1901, Cocker Spaniels were only separated from Field Spaniels and Springer ...

Canine idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (CIPF) is a progressive interstitial lung disease mainly affecting old West Highland white terriers (WHWTs). The aetiology of CIPF is currently unknown and pathogenesis poorly understood. A genetic basis is strongly suspected based on the breed predisposition. CIPF shares clinical and pathological features with human IPF. In human IPF, coagulation disorders favouring a local and systemic pro-thrombotic state have been demonstrated in association with disease severity and outcome. The aim of this study was to compare the systemic haemostatic, fibrinolytic and inflammatory profiles of WHWTs affected with CIPF with breed-matched controls (CTRLs). Additionally, data collected in both groups were interpreted with regard to the reference intervals (when available) to assess possible pro-thrombotic features of the WHWT breed that may be related to CIPF predisposition. A total of 14 WHWTs affected with CIPF and 20 CTRLs were included. WHWTs affected with CIPF had prolonged

Objective - To develop an in vivo method to measure inclination angles and motion of the sacroiliac joint using CT, in two performance dog breeds, of which only one (the German Shepherd dog) has a predilection for diseases that cause lumbosacral region pain. Correlations were assessed in German Shepherd dogs between the presence of lumbosacral region pain and changes in these variables. Animals - The study was comprised of 10 working German Shepherd dogs and 12 racing Greyhounds without history or evidence of lumbosacral region pain or neurological abnormalities, and 6 German Shepherd dogs with histories and examination findings consistent with lumbosacral region pain. Procedures - CT scans were performed in flexed, neutral and extended positions. Lines placed on flexed and extended volume rendered images were used to measure motion of the ilium relative to the sacrum. Inclination angles (joint angle from a reference line placed in the dorsal plane) of the synovial and ligamentous joint ...
The German Shepherd Dog was developed in the 19th century in Germany. There were a lot of different shepherd dogs in Germany, but there was not any recognized breed of these dogs. In the 1890s, Captain Max von Stephanitz, a young German cavalry officer, decided to develop a national breed of shepherd dogs. Max von Stephanitz was a very educated man, fond of shepherd dogs and appreciated very high their working abilities. He is known as the father of the breed. April 3, 1899 is considered to be the birthday of The German Shepherd Dog. On that day Max von Stephanitz purchased a herding dog at a dog show. The dogs name was Hektor Linksrhein (later named Horand von Grafrath) and it became a forefather for present German Shepherd Dogs and the first registered GSDs. Horand von Grafrath won the first German Shepherd Dog show that was held by Max von Stephanitz. He founded the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde, the German Shepherd Dog breeders organization and was named its first president. His efforts ...

One of the most alarming fats about a boxer dog is its shorter life-span, which is due to many factors including anxiety, fear, feeling of loneliness and certain diseases to which the boxer dog is prone. Origin: Despite their small size, the Cocker Spaniel is still an active Sporting breed that needs daily exercise. Regular brushing and a trim every few months helps keep the coat free of mats. Cockers are intelligent, gentle dogs that thrive as part of a family. The Cocker Spaniel dates back as far as the 14th century. The breed originated from the English Cocker Spaniels, which were brought to the United States. The Spaniels were bred down in size and given the name American Cocker Spaniels, officially called simply the Cocker Spaniel by the AKC. The American Cocker Spaniel is more popular than the original English Cocker Spaniel, who are slightly different in appearance, with longer muzzles and larger bodies. The Cocker Spaniel is a hunting-gun dog able to work in difficult terrain in both wet and dry land. Excellent at flushing and retrieving game with a gentle mouth. They listen to commands well. The name Cocker comes from the woodcock, a game bird the dogs were known for flushing. Some ...

In the eighteenth century in Britain, only two types of terriers were recognized, long- and short-legged.[4] Today, terriers are often informally categorized by size or by function. Hunting-types are still used to find, track, or trail quarry, especially underground, and sometimes to bolt the quarry. Modern examples include the Jack Russell Terrier, Rat Terrier and the Patterdale Terrier. There are also the short-legged terriers such as the Cairn Terrier, Scottish Terrier, and West Highland White Terrier which were also used to kill small vermin. The original hunting terriers include the fell terrier-breeds developed in northern England to assist in the killing of foxes-and the hunt terrier-breeds developed in southern England to locate, kill or bolt foxes during a traditional mounted fox hunt. The various combinations of bulldog and terrier that were used for bull-baiting and dog-fighting in the late nineteenth century, were later refined into separate breeds that combined both terrier and ...

Please judge the Shih Tzu by the standard, and not the group it is placed in. Frequently, judges ask me if Shih Tzu are getting too big. I always ask what they mean by big? Shih Tzu are frequently tall and leggy (a fault) BUT many, many of them have little or no body and are too fine boned. Breeders and judges should remember that most everywhere else in the world the Shih Tzu in NOT in the Toy Group. The Shih Tzu has not been bred down from some other combination of breeds. The Shih Tzu should be the third heaviest breed in the toy group, right behind the Pug, and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Many years ago, we always talked about the Shih Tzu being surprisingly heavy for its size. The standard says the ideal weight for a Shih Tzu should be 9 to 16 lbs. The majority of dogs being shown today are between 8 and 11 pounds. My answer to those asking are they are not getting too big is NO. Most old time breeders would like to see Shih Tzu, regardless of sex, in the 12 to 15 pound range. In ...

A few months ago, the United Kennel Club added nine breeds, to its registry, bringing its total to 160. Last month, the American Kennel Club announced the addition of the American Kennel Club announced the addition of the American Eskimo to its miscellaneous group, the first step towards official recognition as an AKC breed. The new UKC breeds are Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Canaan Dog, English Toy Spaniel, Finnish Spitz, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Manchester Terrier, Polish Owczarek Nizinny, Tibetan Spaniel and Shiba, all but the Nizziny are recognized by the AKC, some of them for many years, and AKCs newest, the American Eskimo, has been a UKC breed for a long time. Both registries seem to be in race to add new breeds to their lists, a race that some critics say is an effort to increase the treasuries of both organizations. This rush, along with the apparent whimsical assignment of breed status in some cases, an increase in breed-specific laws in the last few years, and the call by animal ...

Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd) is inherited as an autosomal recessive disease. Degeneration of both rod and cone photoreceptor cells of the retina of PRA-prcd affected dogs usually occurs 3 to 5 years of age or later. Affected dogs initially experience night blindness and loss of peripheral vision. As the disease progresses, complete blindness will occur in time. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a popular dog breed in the UK but there is limited reliable evidence on disorder predispositions and protections within the breed. Using anonymised veterinary clinical data from the VetCompass™ Programme, this study aimed to identify common disorders with predisposition and protection in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The study hypothesised that Staffordshire Bull Terriers would have higher odds of aggression compared with non-Staffordshire Bull Terriers. The clinical records of a random sample of dogs of all types were reviewed to extract the most definitive diagnoses for all disorders existing during 2016. A combined list from the 30 most common disorders in Staffordshire Bull Terriers and the 30 most common disorders in non-Staffordshire Bull Terriers was generated. Multivariable logistic regression was used to report the odds of each of these disorders in 1304 (5.8%) Staffordshire Bull Terriers compared with 21,029 (94.2%) non-Staffordshire Bull Terriers. After

The most effective way to prevent canine infectious respiratory disease is to avoid exposing your pet to other dogs, in particular, puppies. If this is not a possibility, vaccines are available. The injectable Bordetella vaccine and the Bordetella vaccine that is squirted into the nostrils are the most common vaccinations. Strict hygiene should be practiced in kennels and other possible infected areas. Be sure to clean any kennel or area with a disinfectant before use. In addition, food and water bowls should be cleaned frequently to avoid viruses. CIRD can also be prevented with frequent checkups with your veterinarian. Also keep in mind that CIRD viruses may be inside of your pet laying dormant. Even if the viruses are present, they may not exhibit any signs or symptoms for some time. Another important thing to remember is that the disease is best treated in the earliest stages. The sooner you catch the condition, the better the chances for a speedy and successful recovery. ...

Idiopathic hypertriglyceridemia has been reported in Miniature Schnauzers. However, studies investigating the prevalence of this disorder in a large population of Miniature Schnauzers are lacking. 192 healthy Miniature Schnauzers and 38 healthy dogs of other breeds (control dogs) were enrolled in this study. Serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were measured and statistically compared between the Miniature Schnauzers and the control group. Dogs were categorized based on their age, and median serum triglyceride concentrations were compared among different age groups. A total of 63 (32.8%) of the 192 Miniature Schnauzers had serum triglyceride concentrations above the upper limit of the reference range. In contrast, of the 38 control dogs, only 2 (5.3%) had serum triglyceride concentrations above the upper limit of the reference range. The median serum triglyceride concentration in Miniature Schnauzers was 73.5 mg/dL, which was significantly higher compared to that of the control ...

The CPLR does not condone breeding with the primary intention to produce any one particular Labrador Retriever color, commonly called color breeding.. The CPLR recognizes that many Labrador Retriever breeders breed within a certain Labrador color but that their primary goal is not to just produce that color, but rather healthy, intelligent, good-tempered, and trainable Labradors - some which happen to be either silver, charcoal or champagne.. While it may be true that some people believe to develop a Silver Labrador you must cross it with a Weimaraner and thus have done so, these are not breeders educated in Labrador Retrievers nor are they considered ethical breeders. These breeders fall into the same category as Labradoodle breeders. The MPLH gene exists in many breeds including the Great Dane, Sheltie and Grey Hounds. The name Bernese Mountain Dog is a rough translation of the German Berner Sennenhund, which literally means Bernese Alpine herdsmans dog. The Bernese Mountain Dog was rescued from near extinction by Swiss cynologist Franz Schertenlieb in the late 1800s. The modern breed was developed from the dogs found in the countryside near Bern, Switzerland and they are only one of several Swiss breeds. The original Berner Sennenhund was an all-round farm dog used to guard the farm, drive the cows to and from their mountain pastures, and pull carts loaded with milk cans to the dairy. The Bernese Mountain Dog needs lots of human companionship and must be allowed regular interaction with the family. The breed is gentle, calm, affectionate and faithful and makes a great watch dog. They are also very good with children and other animals. The Bernese Mountain dog first came to the United States in 1926. A decade later, two more Bernese Mountain Dogs were imported from Switzerland. In 1937, these two dogs ...

BackgroundThe Miniature Schnauzer breed comes from humble beginnings: they were once kept as small farm dogs and ratters - dogs kept around to control rat problems - in Germany. Created by crossing a standard Schnauzer with the Affenpinscher breed, the Miniature Schnauzer breed became popular in America in the years after WWII. A two year-old spayed, female German Shepherd Dog was referred to the Cornell University Companion Animal Hospital on October 22, 1998 for further evaluation of diarrhea that was poorly responsive to treatment. The owners first noticed signs of diarrhea and weight loss when the dog was less than a year old, after being boarded at a kennel. The referring veterinarian diagnosed her with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) and possible bacterial overgrowth after a physical exam and lab work in March, 1997. Physical exam revealed no abnormalities except a thin dog with diarrhea. The lab work revealed a low trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI) of 0.5 ngfml (Reference range: 535 ng/ml) consistent with EPI. The referring veterinarian began treating her for EPI with the following drugs: Tagamet, Viokase powder, and linmodium and Pepto Bismol as needed. She was also cycled on and off Metronidazole and Tetracycline depending on the severity of her clinical signs. She was started on Hills L?D canned ...

OBJECTIVES : To establish transthoracic echocardiographic reference intervals in adult English springer spaniel dogs. METHODS : Forty-two healthy adult English springer spaniels were prospectively recruited from a general practice population in the UK . Animals were examined twice, at least 12 months apart, to exclude dogs with progressive cardiac disease. Reference intervals were calculated using Box-Cox transformations and specific variables were depicted within an expert consensus range. Relationships of body mass, age and heart rate with cardiac structure and function were examined and functional assessments were compared with previous reports. Reference intervals were compared against published ratiometric indices and allometric scaling models. RESULTS : Thirty-nine dogs contributed to create the reference intervals. Significant relationships with bodyweight, age and heart rate were detected, although low coefficients of determination were found. Fractional shortening values were lower than ...

Obesity in dogs is an increasing problem and better knowledge of the metabolism of overweight dogs is needed. Identification of molecular changes related to overweight may lead to new methods to improve obesity prevention and treatment. The aim of the study was firstly to investigate whether Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) based metabolomics could be used to differentiate postprandial from fasting urine in dogs, and secondly to investigate whether metabolite profiles differ between lean and overweight dogs in fasting and postprandial urine, respectively. Twenty-eight healthy intact male Labrador Retrievers were included, 12 of which were classified as lean (body condition score (BCS) 4-5 on a 9-point scale) and 16 as overweight (BCS 6-8). After overnight fasting, a voided morning urine sample was collected. Dogs were then fed a high-fat mixed meal and postprandial urine was collected after 3 hours. Metabolic profiles were generated using NMR and 45 metabolites identified from the spectral data were

Splenic abscess is a rare disease with only few reports in small-animal practice as well as in human medicine. It has been mostly reported in immunocompromised patients or following penetrating foreign bodies. This report aims to add to the current veterinary literature on recommended diagnostic tools for splenic abscess, as well as to provide follow-up findings after successful surgical treatment. An 8-year-old male German shepherd dog was admitted to the clinic for evaluation of fever, anorexia, and lethargy for the previous 3 days. During the physical examination, a mass was palpated in the left cranioventral abdomen. Diagnostic imaging including radiography and ultrasonography revealed the presence of a large mass in the spleen and signs of peritonitis. Laboratory tests reflected highly septic pyogranulomatous inflammation and, together with imaging findings, raised a high suspicion of splenic abscess and septic peritonitis. Therapy included complete splenectomy and placement of peritoneal drainage.

Shetland sheepdog training can be a lot of fun because these pooches love to learn and are very energetic. Therefore, once you are done teaching basic obedience commands, you might want to consider other fun activities you can teach your sheltie, such as herding.. You might have even glimpsed their instinctual nature on occasion if they have tried to group children or other animals together.
