We provide here several lines of evidence for the identification of Nrg1 as a transcriptional repressor responsible for glucose repression of the STA1 gene. First, nrg1Δcells, when grown under the repressed conditions, exhibit dramatically increased glucoamylase activity which is comparable to that of cells grown under the derepressed conditions. Second, Northern analyses show that the increased glucoamylase level is correlated with the increased level of STA1 transcript in nrg1Δ cells.
