A urethral diverticulum is a condition where the urethra or the periurethral glands push into the connective tissue layers (fascia) that surround it. Urethral diverticula are often asymptomatic and symptoms that are present tend to be nonspecific. They can co-occur with cancer, in approximately 6-9% of cases, most commonly adenocarcinoma, but also including squamous cell carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma. Approximately 10% of cases co-occur with kidney stones. There are 2 types of urethral diverticulums. Congenital and acquired. In infancy usually the urethral diverticulum is congenital but in rare instances acquired urethral diverticulum can be seen in infancy specially following traumatic catheterization. Common symptoms of urethral diverticulum include incontinence, urinary frequency and urgency, pain during sex, and pain during urination. Other symptoms include pain localized to the urethra or pelvis and frequent urinary tract infection. When urethral diverticulum becomes severe, a ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Bladder diverticulum. T2 - Clinicopathologic spectrum in pediatric patients. AU - Alexander, Riley E.. AU - Kum, Jennifer B.. AU - Idrees, Muhammad. PY - 2012/11/15. Y1 - 2012/11/15. N2 - Urinary bladder diverticula are a relatively rare finding in both the adult and pediatric population. Their presence in the adult population has long been associated with the development of urothelial carcinoma within the lesion. Our goal is to analyze a relatively large pediatric patient population with urinary bladder diverticula to expand the body of knowledge on the associated clinical symptomatology, congenital syndromes associated with the entity, and treatment methods and to further investigate if there is any reason to suspect malignant transformation within the pediatric population. A search for pediatric patients (0-19 years of age) from 1990 to 2011 revealed 47 patients with 60 diverticula within the specified age range. Clinical records and histologic slides for all cases were pulled ...

Dear Dr VVS Chandrasekharam sir, We have been very happy with your treatment for my lovely kid, and very very heart full thanks to Dr Chandrasekharam. Dr.VVS Chandrasekharam sir is absolutely the best I ve ever been to. Dr Chandrasekharam is very expert Doctor in Laparoscopic Surgery of children.. It all started when my lovely kid Srikar had severe urinary problem 3 months ago at the age of 8 months. He had severe urinary infection and could not pass urine properly; his stomach started bulging (I was told it was because of urine accumulation in his urinary bladder). With these problems, my little boy was diagnosed with (after tests like Ultrasound & MCUG) urinary bladder diverticulum ( a large pouch attached to the left side of urinary bladder) which was obstructing the free urine passage from the bladder. My sons left kidney & ureter were also enlarged due to the obstruction. With this diagnosis & urine infection, my son had to be treated with urinary catheter (tube thru the penis to drain ...
Prevalences of diverticulum and low-grade mucinous neoplasm (LGMN) were reported as 0.04-2% and less than 1% in the appendix. In this study, the frequency of diverticulum in LGMN cases, the relationship between diverticula and periappendicular mucin, and the possible role of diverticula in...
For all the various studies having been conducted worldwide on the origins of the SA nodal artery and the prevalence of LA diverticula and accessory appendages, the current literature is devoid of data on these issues among the Iranian population. However, some similarities in findings in the current study with other previous reports show same variants in different populations. On the other hand, the presence of some differences in findings demonstrates genetic variations between populations. Knowledge of anatomical variants in each population would be beneficial in early clinical decision-making vis-a-vis patients with AF, especially for cardiac resynchronization therapy or surgical methods.. In the current study, the main origin of the SA nodal artery was R1 and the main termination pattern was retrocaval. There were prevalence rates of 48.9% and 17.8% for diverticula and accessory appendages in the LA. A study by Song et al. (23) in the Korean population reported R1 as the origin of the SA ...

Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that form in the lining of your digestive system. They are found most often in the lower part of the large intestine (colon). Diverticula are common, especially after age 40, and seldom cause problems. Sometimes, however, one or more of the pouches become inflamed or infected. That condition is known…

Diverticulum of the caecum is a rare lesion. From a clinical point of view, the inflammation it causes can mimic symptoms of acute appendicitis, causing difficulties in diagnosis and thus prescription of appropriate treatment. It is almost impossible to differentiate this disease from acute appendicitis through physical examination alone, and radiological imaging may also prove insufficient. For this reason, it is common to perioperatively diagnose diverticula of the caecum. Two cases of patients who underwent surgery for perforated caecal diverticula are presently described.. Keywords: Acute abdomen, caecum, diverticulum perforation ...
Kaye, M. D. (1974).Thorax, 29, 666-672. Oesophageal motor dysfunction in patients with diverticula of the mid-thoracic oesophagus. Oesophageal motor function was assessed by a perfused catheter manometric system in a consecutive series of 12 patients with diverticula located in the mid-thoracic oesophagus. In only one of the 12 patients was there radiographic evidence of prior tuberculous infection. Manometry revealed diffuse oesophageal spasm in five patients and vigorous achalasia in one. In the other six patients there was a definite but unclassifiable abnormality of motility, of moderate degree in four and mild in two. `Traction is of less importance in the pathogenesis of mid-oesophageal diverticula than is generally supposed. An underlying disorder of oesophageal motor function should be suspected in patients with this type of lesion.. ...
Cardiac diverticula look like diverticula elsewhere in the body, as tubular structures originating from the endocardium, bulging against the myocardium. It is important to be aware of their presence and make multiplanar reconstructions (MPR) to correctly characterize them. In this case the CT study depicted a subaortic diverticulum originating from the left ventricle. There was no communication between the left and right ventricles (no contrast going through the diverticulum). The diverticulum neck measured 7 mm and the depth was 9 mm. There was a calcified bicuspid valve. The ascending aorta was dilated. The ascending aortic diameter measured from adventitia to adventitia was 4.5 cm ...
RADIOLOGY: GENITOURINARY: GU: Case# 34660: TWO LARGE CALCULI IN A URETHRAL DIVERTICULUM. A 53 year-old Black female who complained of a sensation of something dropping in her pelvis several months prior to imaging as well as dysuria that resolved with oral antibiotics several weeks ago. Cystoscopy done just prior to radiologic evaluation was unremarkable. Two large radiopaque stones projecting over the lower pubic symphysis on scout film. VCUG demonstrated a posterior urethral diverticulum which contained both sontes within it. Bladder was normal. The diverticulum opening was located near the bladder neck. The female urethra, which is homologous to the posterior urethra in the male minus the verumontanum, is approximately 4 cm long. It courses obliquely downward from the internal urethral opening and is slightly curved, although its course is normally quite variable. The urethra contains periuurethral glands (throughout its length?), and glands similar to the male prostatic glands are often ...

False: A bulge is seen during both systole and diastole. Typically occurs along the inferior and anterolateral walls. The mouth of the aneurysm is typically less than 50% of its maximal width. The wall of the aneurysm is the pericardium. Thrombus and calcification are uncommon. It has a propensity to expand and rupture (45% of cases). Contrast material may not fill the aneurysm until late in systole and opacification of the sac may persist after contrast has left the left ventricle. Differential considerations include congenital diverticula (smaller and occur at the apex), African cardiomyopathies (different clinical course and lack of coronary artery disease). ...

Bladder diverticula occur as a result of focal herniations of the urothelium and submucosa and usually occur in the setting of chronic elevation of intravesical pressure. They tend to occur next to ureteral orifices and are an important cause of urinary stasis, ureteral obstruction, and vesicoureteral reflux. Radiographic findings include a smooth inner wall with a saccule of 2 cm or less. Occassionally, the diverticula may be filled with stones, or, more rarely, carcinoma. ...

If diverticula have been discovered during a camera test for another reason (colonoscopy) or during a CT scan, you may be worried about what this means.. However, if you have never had abdominal pain or bouts of diarrhoea, there is a 70-80% chance that you will never have any symptoms from them. Diverticula are extremely common over the age of 70 and they do not increase your risk of cancer. Its thought that a high-fibre diet is likely to reduce the risk of any symptoms developing.. ...
Figure 2. Normal anatomy of the colon and rectum.. Citation: ASCRS patient education brochure. Partly digested food enters the colon from the small intestine. The colon removes water and nutrients from the food and turns the rest into solid waste (stool). Coordinated series of contractions of the colon act to pass the stool forward and empty into the rectum. As stool enters the rectum, the rectum relaxes and acts as a reservoir to hold the stool. The primary function of the anus is to hold stool within the rectum until a time when it is appropriate to pass stool (defecate or have a "bowel movement"). At the appropriate time, the anus relaxes to eliminate the stool.. Diverticula can form throughout the colon but, in the U.S. and other Western countries, the sigmoid colon is the most common site for diverticula to form. Diverticula of the cecum and ascending colon are seen occasionally in the U.S. but are much more common in Asia. The exact cause of diverticulosis is not known. The most commonly ...
Doctors give trusted, helpful answers on causes, diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, and more: Dr. ElGendy on whats the most common cause of airway obstruction: Much more common in males + most common cause in mature men is bph, benign prostatic hypertrophy less often prostate cancer or prostatitis. Further down from prostate most common blockage is urethral stricture either from trauma, ie straddle injuries or pelvic fractures. Most common in newborn males is posterior urethral valves. In females - urethral diverticulum or skenes gland cyst.
The distal part of the hepatic diverticulum transforms into a complex of branching cords of cells (trabeculae) separated by venous channels (sinusoids), which together make up the liver. The liver lies in the most cranial part of the abdominal cavity and remains separated from the heart by the septum transversum. The proximal part of the hepatic diverticulum becomes the bile duct that empties into the fore- and midgut junction. The gall bladder forms as a diverticulum of the bile duct on the caudal surface of the liver. The bile duct then continues to the liver as the hepatic duct. The ventral pancreas is represented as a branching duct that moves first to the right side of the duodenum then to a dorsal position. It grows into the dorsal mesoduodenum and lies to the right of the portal vein. The ventral pancreatic duct joins the bile duct near the duodenum ...
In the present study it would appear that the hepatic diverticulum was formed concurrently with the establishment of the gut tract and that it was established in part by differential growth of the endoderm, in part by differential growth of surrounding structures and in part because of a relatively fixed contact point between a segment of the endoderm and the endothelial lining of the heart. It was noted in the observations that the endodermal primordium of the foregut and hepatic diverticulum was differentiated from the yolk sac by the thickness of its cell layers. It was distinctly thicker than the single-cell layer of the yolk sac. In tracing this thicker endodermal layer throughout the separate somite-staged embryos it was noted that there were no areas of "isolated" cell proliferation and that this endoderm, although it increased in length, remained rather uniform in thickness until after the establishment of the hepatic diverticulum. In following the morphological configuration of this ...

Both kinds of fiber help make stools soft and easy to pass, which helps to prevent constipation.. Constipation is the main cause of increased pressure in the colon, making the muscles strain to move stool that is too hard. The excess pressure caused by the straining makes the weak spots in the colon bulge out, forming diverticula.. Doctors do not know what causes the infection that causes diverticulitis, but believe it may begin when stool or bacteria are caught in the diverticula.. ...

A ventral, midline outpouching, the hepatic diverticulum, appears at the fore- and midgut junction, or primitive duodenum. The proximal part of the diverticulum dilates into the hepatic antrum, which communicates with the lumen of the primitive duodenum. Hepatic trabeculae, or cords of cells, extend from the antrum on both sides into the mesoderm of the septum transversum. The trabeculae are separated from each other by venous channels called hepatic sinusoids. The trabeculae join with one another between sinusoids ...
