Diuron is a ureic herbicide considered to have very low toxicity. The present study evaluated several aspects of reproductive toxicity of diuron in adult male rats. Diuron was diluted in corn oil and administered by oral gavage to groups of 18-20 rats at doses of 0, 125 or 250 mg/kg per day for 30 days; the control group received only the corn oil vehicle. The adsorption and desorption of diuron and fluometuron by the Gezira clay, Kinana clay, and Gerif loamy clay soils were studied. The two herbicides exhibited greater adsorption by the Gerif soil than by the Kinana and Gezira soils. The Kinana soil adsorbed more fluometuron than the Gezira soil. However, only at low and high concentrations of diuron did the Kinana soil show greater adsorption than the Gezira soil. At intermediate range of diuron concentrations the opposite occurred. Since the Gezira soil contained the lowest percentage of organic matter it was argued that organic matter did not play any significant role in the adsorption of these two herbicides by these soils. The Gerif soil has the highest specific surface area than the twos ils. It was thus concluded that in arid-zone soils, very low in organic matter, specific surface area may be a good criterion for determining adsorption. Background: Substituted urea herbicide is widely used in the agricultural industry and is accessible to most people around the globe. Accidental or deliberate poisoning is an anticipated complication of these agrochemical products. Case presentation: We present a 15-year-old girl following deliberate self-ingestion of substituted urea herbicide (Diuron). She was diagnosed with Diuron induced methemoglobinemia and treated with intra venous methylene blue. Later she developed hemolytic anemia and needed 3 units of blood transfusions. Her haemolysis was thought to be due to methylene blue with concomitant Glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency as no other possible cause was found for haemolysis. But on follow-up visits, G6PD deficiency was excluded by screening test and enzyme level assay. Conclusion: Heamolytic anemia is a possible rare complication that should be anticipated in patients presented with the significant amount of substituted urea herbicide poisoning. An experimental plot has been established since January 2001 on a calcareous soil in southern England to investigate the fate and transport of diuron (N`-[3,4-dichlorophenyl]-N,Ndimethylurea), a commonly used phenylurea herbicide. Eelgrass communities in the Peconic estuary of Long Island NY have been in decline for several decades prompting resource managers to reduce nitrogen loads into the estuary. Despite improved water quality in recent years, eelgrass continues to decline. This lack of response has caused the management agencies to suggest that seepage of groundwater contaminated with herbicides such as Diuron and high nitrate from regions with a long history of agriculture may be to blame. We performed two types of manipulative experiments during the summer of 2009 to assess the possible impacts of groundwater on eelgrass growth and survival. Kochia [Kochia scoparia (L) Schrad] has become resistant to many herbicides used in cropland and railroad rights-of-way in North Dakota and Minnesota. A resistant K scoparia accession (MN-3R) was confirmed with resistance up to 16-fold higher than recommended use rates for tebuthiuron and diuron and up to 4-fold higher for metribuzin. When I began my masters degree program in 1969, there were already a lot of herbicides on the market. The transition from hand weeding to the herbicide era had been made. I honestly cannot remember if the introduction of a single herbicide like Treflan ended hand weeding in cotton or if it transitioned out - but it ended. Treflan introduced the dinitroaniline or DNA mode of action and other herbicides in this family such as Planavin quickly followed.. Diuron or Karmex had introduced the photosynthetic inhibitors in cotton and others such as Cotoran soon followed. These could be used pre-emergence and also as post-directed sprays.
