If screened regularly, over one-half of U.S. women will have abnormal mammography results that require additional follow-up but in which cancer is not detected (false-positive result). This dissertation presents and tests a model, informed by theoretical and empirical evidence, of the relationship between receipt of false-positive mammography results and adherence to subsequent mammography screening. To test study hypotheses, I analyzed longitudinal data (n=2406), gathered through medical claims records and telephone interviews, as part of the PRISM (Personally Relevant Information on Screening Mammography) intervention trial to increase repeat mammography adherence among insured North Carolina women. About 8% of women received false-positive mammography results within 14 months of their interviews. Among women who said their physicians had not advised them to get mammograms in the past year, those who received false-positive results were more likely to have no subsequent mammogram on record ...
Magnetic Resonance has been shown to detect tissue displacements generated by a mechanical stimulus or an ultrasound (US) field. Magnetic Resonance Microwave Absorption (MRMA) imaging uses MR to image microwave-induced thermoelastic waves as a potential breast cancer detection method. It is a derivative of thermoacoustic imaging where pressure waves generated by thermoelastic expansion from localized microwave power absorption are recorded at the surface of the body by an array of US transducers. The technique relies on the basic physical principle that thermoelastic motion stems from the temperature rise and the subsequent thermal expansion can be encoded into MR image phase. This thesis investigated the feasibility of MR detection of thermoelastic motion induced by a 434 MHz microwave field. The dissertation is divided into three sections. First, we introduced the basic MR physics and discussed the phase encoding technique used in MR motion encoding. Both spin-echo and gradient-echo based MR ...

Time series is a series of observations over time. When there is one observation at each time instance, it is called a univariate time series (UTS), and when there are more than one observations, it is called a multivariate time series (MTS). While UTS datasets have been extensively explored, MTS datasets have not been broadly investigated. The techniques for UTS datasets, however, cannot be simply extended for MTS datasets, since multivariate time series is different from multiple univariate time series. That is, an MTS item may not be broken into multiple univariate time series and be separately analyzed, because this will result in the loss of the correlation information within the multivariate time series.; In this dissertation, we introduce a set of techniques for multivariate time series analysis based on principal component analysis (PCA). As a similarity measure for MTS datasets, we present Eros (Extended Frobenius norm). Eros computes the similarity between two MTS items by comparing ...
TY - THES. T1 - Dietary fibre components of rye bran and their fermentation in vitro. T2 - Dissertation. AU - Karppinen, Sirpa. PY - 2003. Y1 - 2003. N2 - Dietary fibre (DF) is defined for nutritional purposes as the non-digestible part of plant food. Because DF has many physiological effects along the entire human gastrointestinal tract, it is important for human well-being. Many of the health effects are mediated by the microbial fermentation of DF carbohydrates in the large intestine. Rye is the main source of DF in Finland. Rye bran, in particular, is rich in DF. According to the traditional method of estimating DF the content is about 38 g/100 g on a dry weight basis. Rye bran was also shown to contain a significant fructan concentration (7 g/100 g), which according to the suggested new dietary fibre concept is also a component of DF. Rye grain contained 4.6-6.6 g of fructan/100 g depending on the growth conditions. In traditional soft rye bread, the DF content increases from 11 to 14 g/100 ...

Rooted in ideology critique, this dissertation studies the construction of democracy in the coverage of Venezuela during the era of President Hugo Chávez. The aim of this endeavor is twofold. First, the dissertation aims to understand the relationship between ideology and the construction of democracy in journalism on foreign political phenomena. Second, it attempts to explore the ways in which the relationship between ideology and democracy in journalism serves to legitimize or delegitimize the struggle for social justice in nations in the global South vis-à-vis the political and economic fundamentals of global capitalism.. The dissertation comprises three articles that study the construction of democracy in depictions of the Venezuelan political system and its key political actors. Article I studies the construction of (il)legitimate democracy in relation to the Venezuelan government, Article II explores the construction of difference between Chávezs supporters and his opponents, and ...
This dissertation comprises a comparative study into standardised phraseology, or formulaic language, in two typologically different languages, namely English and Spanish.. This relatively recent topic of interest developed independently in several language-related fields, which provided me with the incentive to approach the realm of phraseology from an interdisciplinary perspective in this dissertation. Consequently, the study is fuelled by insights from a variety of research domains, such as Second/Foreign Language Acquisition (SLA/FLA), psycholinguistics, foreign language pedagogy and corpus linguistics.. Two major investigations are presented in this dissertation, which are essentially quantitative in nature. They were set up in an attempt to probe the applicability and effectiveness of an instructional method known as the Lexical Approach (LA) (Lewis 1993, 1997, 2000). The LA relies on the ubiquity of formulaic sequences in language, i.e. what Sinclair (1991) has called the idiom ...

Joanne Randa Nucho, anthropology graduate student, has received a U.S Department of Education Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Award to study public perceptions of urban development programs in Beirut, Lebanon. Living in Lebanon for the 2010-11 academic year, Nucho will focus her fieldwork within a neighborhood where Armenian non-governmental organizations run a majority of community development services such as a community center that provides vocational training, summer school for children, and medical services at low or no cost. She will also focus on and cultural events including film festivals, music and arts festivals and a catalogue which publicizes the popular shopping district and crafts available in the area. She is interested in learning how the diverse public perceives the programs offered by the Armenian groups and whether individuals from other religious and ethnic backgrounds take part in the activities. The research is part of her broader interest in and dissertation focus on ...
This text constitutes an intellectual exercise of sorts whereby the author is expected to assume a certain position on the issue of utopia and, consequently, adopts a new way to see the concept of utopia. Instead of offering a historical account of the concept, the author has decided to articulate the principal theses underlying it, which so far have often been veiled in unnecessary erudition and over-burdened with excessive details about the genealogy of the concept. The author proposes eight theses concerning utopia and falsifies them successively. However, the task of the article is not purely destructive and polemical, for every falsification makes it possible to formulate a positive thesis on utopia as an instrument of thought. Therefore, the article is not a purely analytical or sophistic exercise, nor is it intended as an empty intellectual game. The study bears the title of Eight and a half theses on utopia, mainly because the author regards the last thesis as unfinished and ...

In his dissertation, Topi Sikanen, a Master of Science (Technology) and Research Scientist at VTT, examined the transport, evaporation and combustion of liquids in large-scale fire incidents. He developed practical models which will help to predict the consequences for nuclear power plants of fires caused by aircraft impacts.. Analyses of airliner impacts became mandatory after terrorists deliberately crashed two aircraft into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York in 2001.. Nuclear power plants must continuously improve their safety standards. A modern nuclear power plant, for example, must withstand fires caused by aircraft crashing into it. In his dissertation, Topi Sikanen developed methods of modelling unusual and major accidents. The practical outcome of the dissertation was a number of tested, applicable models which help to predict the consequences of fires at nuclear power plants.. Sikanen applied the computational tools of fluid dynamics to the fire safety analyses he presented ...

Cancer remains the second leading cause of mortality in the United States. Special events such as health fairs, screening days or cultural festivals are employed often for community education about cancer screening. A previous systematic review of the published literature was conducted in 2012-2013. The purpose of this study was to conduct a grey literature component of special events that promote breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening in the U.S. We conducted a grey literature search of dissertations/theses and conference abstracts. The theses/dissertations were restricted to those: 1) written in English, 2) published from January 1990 to December 2011, 3) examined at least one of the predefined categories of special events, 4) involved cancer screening for breast, cervical, and/or colorectal cancer, 5) included outcome data, and 6) conducted in the United States. A review of U.S. public health and cancer conference abstracts, that were readily available and had focused on at least of 3
Pornography remains one of the most controversial topics in our culture. Politicians, religious groups, and special interest organizations tend to focus on the effects pornography has on those who consume it, and fear that pornography is a threat to public health. The general discourse surrounding pornography is that men produce violent pornography for other men and at the expense of women. Because of this, feminist pornography-or pornography that is produced and targeted towards women-has not received the scholarly attention it merits. The following thesis aims to study the rhetorical messages found in a feminist pornography film, with the goal of providing an alternative discourse that challenges conventional assumptions about pornography. Specifically, this study analyses Jacky St. James full-length film, Torn. Jacky St. James, a self-proclaimed feminist, is a writer and director of pornography who targets women as her primary audience. In order to analyze the rhetorical messages in Jacky ...

Research on the application of soluble, metal chelates for water tracing using thermal neutron activation analysis for tracer determination has led to the development of several tracers with promising solution stabilities (conservative behavior) and determination sensitivities. The solution stabilities of the ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and the diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) chelates of the activable elements Cr, Co, Eu, In, Sb, Sc and Tb were evaluated in a series of laboratory, radiotracer experiments conducted under simulated field conditions. They showed that 1) chelation of metals produces highly conservative solution behavior, 2) DTPA is generally better than EDTA for improving tracer behavior, 3) non-chelated metals are rapidly sorbed onto sediments and 4) chelation reduces sorption of metals onto sediments. Field tests of EuDTPA, TbDTPA, InDTPA and Rhodamine B fluorescent dye in a small eastern Washington stream demonstrated that the metal chelates have ...

Privacy has always been a great concern of patients and medical service providers. As a result of the recent advances in Information Technology and the governments push for Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, a large amount of data is collected and stored electronically. This data is an important and rich source for research and needs to be made available for mining, while at the same time patient privacy needs to be preserved. The management of medical data is heavily regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the United States. This strong level of oversight and inherent characteristics of medical data make Privacy Preserving Medical Data Mining a special field of Privacy Preserving Data Mining (PPDM). Yet, research is quite limited in this field. This study pinpoints the following gaps in current research: 1. Privacy protection in the medical field means the protection of individuals from being associated with undesirable conditions, diagnoses or ...

Title: Physical map construction and physical characterization of channel catfish genome. Name: Xu, Peng. Degree: PhD. Chair: Zhanjiang Liu. Resides: FAA Library. University: Auburn. Location: Auburn, Alabama. Date: 2007. Pages: 111. Keywords: channel catfish genome, gene mapping, genetics. Abstract: Catfish is the major aquaculture species in the United States. To enhance genome studies involving linkage mapping, comparative mapping and linkage map and physical map integration, over 20,000 Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) end sequences were generated and a BAC-based physical map of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque) genome was constructed using four color fluorescence-based fingerprinting. A total of 25,195 BAC ends were sequenced, generating 20,366 clean BAC end sequences (BES) with an average reading length of 557 bp. The total reading length of 11,414,601 bp represented approximately 1.2% of the catfish genome. Based on this survey, the catfish genome was found to be ...

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) emerged in 2002/2003, causing the deaths of almost a tenth of the 8000 individuals infected worldwide before it was controlled by public health measures. While the 2003 epidemic strain is likely extinct, the importance of coronaviruses as emergent zoonotic viruses was again realized with the emergence of a novel human coronavirus in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Despite a decade of research on SARS-CoV no approved vaccine or therapeutic yet exists, and development of broadly neutralizing and effective therapeutics for coronaviruses remains a priority. Neutralizing antibodies targeting the Spike glycoprotein (S) are both necessary and sufficient for protection against SARS-CoV, but the high genetic diversity and mutability of SARS-CoV in natural infections presents a challenge to both vaccine- and antibody-based therapeutics. Thus, an effective SARS-CoV therapeutic should provide S-specific immunity that is nonetheless broad enough to counter ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Fluori-Methane vapocoolant spray, as used in the spray and stretch technique, on decreasing a prolonged silent period duration in the masseter muscle. Ten subjects were selected, all of whom were identified as having masseter muscle dysfunction and/or spasm. The population consisted of two males and eight females, whose ages ranged from 24-58. The silent period duration of the masseter was measured following elicitation of the jaw-jerk reflex. Five readings were taken and the mean silent period duration was calculated. All means longer than 35 milliseconds were considered prolonged. An EDX 1000 electromyograph and Beckman standard size silver surface electrodes were used in recording the data. The amount of mandibular depression available was also measured. Once these measurements were completed, each subject was treated using Fluori-Methane vapocoolant spray, as used in the spray and stretch technique. The silent period duration and ...

This dissertation takes a step towards providing a better understanding of post-socialist welfare state development from a theoretical as well as an empirical perspective. The overall analytical goal of this thesis has been to critically assess the development of social policies in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania using them as illustrative examples of post-socialist welfare state development in the light of the theories, approaches and typologies that have been developed to study affluent capitalist democracies. The four studies included in this dissertation aspire to a common aim in a number of specific ways.. The first study tries to place the ideal-typical welfare state models of the Baltic States within the well-known welfare state typologies. At the same time, it provides a rich overview of the main social security institutions in the three countries by comparing them with each other and with the previous structures of the Soviet period. It examines the social insurance institutions of the ...

P53 gene family members (p53, p63 and p73) are involved in crucial cellular functions such as cell-cycle arrest, apoptosis and development. In this study four partial p53 family cDNAs (cDNA1-4) and the first complete genomic sequence of the p53 family homologue in the mollusc Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were identified and characterized. Results indicate gene structure of M.galloprovincialis p53 family homologue to be most similar to vertebrate p63 gene, considering p63 as the ancestral gene of the p53 family as well as the only gene of the family present in non-chordate metazoan species. The M.galoprovincialis p63 gene spans through 20620 base pairs (bp) and is composed of 15 egzons interrupted with 14 introns. Analysis showed the new M.galloprovincialis cDNA (cDNA1-4) sequences code for TAp63 or TAp63 isoforms, and identified all other molluscan p53 family sequences as p63 gene or its expression isoforms. Comparison of M.galloprovincialis p63 gene structure with other ...

In this dissertation, I argue that we can look to particular aspects of theatre and performance to help us engage in empathy that is respectful and dialogic, that seeks not to consume anothers experience, but rather to engage it. As a work of theatre scholarship, this dissertation seeks to reframe the debate over whether or not theatre is the ideal site of empathy, and whether such empathy can motivate social change. Rather than arguing for or against empathy, I suggest that we must ask what kind of empathy best promotes social change and how the theatre can help us encourage that empathy. I advocate a model of empathy based on a sense of parity, dialogue, and non-linearity. Empathy, I argue, is not a state or a feeling with a stable goal (understanding), but rather a process. As such, it entails an affective and critical labor that requires us to meet the other as our equal and to entertain, imaginatively, his or her perspective on the world. Because the empathy I advocate takes the form of ...
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PURPLE PEPPER PLANTS, AN ANTHOCYANIN POWERHOUSE: EXTRACTION, SEPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION Cassandra Lynn Taylor Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation directed by: Professor Alice C. Mignerey Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Most plants have multiple anthocyanins present that produce their color. In contrast, the foliage of the purple pepper plant (Capsicum annuum L.) contains high concentrations of a single anthocyanin delphinidin-3-p-coumaroylrutinoside-5-glucoside (Dp-3-p-coumrut-5-glc) in the foliage, making it very unique. This provides an excellent platform to extract the single anthocyanin at high concentrations. A food-grade extraction method was developed using 1% hydrochloric acid and 200 proof ethanol (1% HCl/EtOH) in order to remove the intact anthocyanin. A separation method using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was developed to identify Dp-3-p-coumrut-5-glc. The retention time was compared with the Blue Ribbon Iris, a known ...
