Ambulatory Care Services for Digestive Diseases
Care Settings: According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 60 to 70 million people had digestive diseases in 2009, a primary diagnosis of which necessitated 48.3 million visits to the ambulatory care setting. A primary diagnosis of digestive disease was made during physician office visits (36.6 million), EDs (7.9 million), and outpatient departments (3.8 million). Digestive disease was the primary reason for 21.7 million hospitalizations, 5.4 million inpatient medical procedures, and 245,921 deaths. Surgical procedures (20.4 million) for digestive diseases were performed at both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. Of all inpatient procedures performed, 12% were for digestive diseases, and 20% of all write-in procedures were performed in ambulatory care settings.. Ambulatory Care Visits: Patients with symptoms of digestive diseases who visited ambulatory care settings were diagnosed and treated most often for gastroesophageal reflux (8.9 million), ...
Effect of Intravenous Fluid Therapy on Postoperative Vomiting in Children Undergoing Otorhinolaryngological Surgery - Full Text...
Postoperative vomiting is a common complication on pediatric surgery, especially otorhinolaryngological surgery. Is one of the main reasons of prolonged hospital stay, and also a cause of patient´s discomfort and an increase on hospitalization cost.. There are studies in adults with inconclusive results related to supplemental fluid therapy and decrease of postoperative nausea and vomiting. But, in recent years a study in children showed favorable results in strabismus surgery. The foundation of this study consist in that hypovolemia may possibly cause a decrease in perfusion causing intestinal hypoxia, which in turn increase the incidence of nausea and vomiting. The objective of this study is to observe the effect of supplemental fluid therapy on postoperative vomiting on otorhinolaryngological surgery. ...

Asteroid hyalosis - Wikipedia
Asteroid hyalosis is a degenerative condition of the eye involving small white opacities in the vitreous humor. It is known to occur in humans, dogs, cats, horses, and chinchillas. Clinically, these opacities are quite refractile, giving the appearance of stars (or asteroids) shining in the night sky-except that ocular asteroids are often quite mobile. Ocular asteroids must be distinguished from the more common typical vitreous floaters, which are usually fibrillar or cellular condensates. The cause of asteroid hyalosis is unknown, but it has been associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and, in certain animals, tumors of the ciliary body. In dogs, asteroid hyalosis is considered to be an age related change. The asteroid bodies are made up of hydroxylapatite, which in turn consists of calcium and phosphates or phospholipids. While asteroid hyalosis does not usually severely affect vision, the floating opacities can be quite annoying, and may interfere significantly ...

Endocrine function over time in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 - Danish National Research Database-Den Danske...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) have an increased incidence of endocrine dysfunction. In this study, the temporal evolution of endocrine dysfunction in patients with DM1 was investigated. METHODS: Endocrine function was assessed in 68 patients with DM1, in whom endocrine function had been followed, on average, for 8 years. The endocrine function was assessed by measuring the concentration of hormones and metabolites in blood and by validating libido with questionnaires. RESULTS: At baseline, 30 of the 68 patients presented with at least one hormonal dysfunction. When re-evaluated after 8 years, 57 of 68 patients had endocrine dysfunction. Diabetic patients had increased from one to four. At follow-up, hyperparathyroidism occurred in 25% and abnormal thyroid-stimulating hormone in 21%, compared with 14% and 9% at baseline. Sixteen of 33 men had increased luteinizing hormone levels compared with seven at baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that endocrine ...

Multivariate Modeling of Proteins Related to Trapezius Myalgia, a Comparative Study of Female Cleaners with or without Pain
Work related musculoskeletal disorders are the dominating causes of reported ill-health in industrialized countries. These chronic pain conditions are one of the most costly public health problems in Europe and North America. When work related musculoskeletal disorders are considered to be of muscular origin and the trapezius muscle is affected, the common appellation is trapezius myalgia. Since little is known about the genesis or how it is maintained, it is of great importance to better understand the pathophysiology of trapezius myalgia; doing so will better enable recommendations for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Several hypotheses have been presented based on biochemical alterations in the muscle, suggesting increased signaling of inflammatory substances and altered metabolism. Previous research has not been able to present the comprehensive picture of the muscle in pain. Thus there is a demand for more comprehensive research regarding the biochemical milleu of the chronic ...

Work related musculoskeletal disorders and the crab processing industry: an analysis of gender differences - Memorial...
This study, part of a larger project, examined the prevalence, type, and symptoms of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and resulting disability in a sample of 107 crab plant workers in Newfoundland. The overall purposes of the thesis were twofold. First and foremost, the purpose of this thesis was to examine the types of work related injuries that men and women experience as a result of crab processing, the symptoms of these injuries, level of disability, and if there were any gender differences. An analysis comparing the survey responses of women (n=74) and men (n=33) revealed few differences in the prevalence, type or symptoms of WMSDs and resulting disabilities by gender. Some of these differences included that female workers were more likely to experience a neck injury than males and that males were more likely to have injuries to their arms than females. Pain was the predominant symptom experienced. Disability scores were high for men and women, but no significant differences. ...

Digestive Disorders: Facts & Figures
In 1990, 20% of the U.S. population suffered from acid reflux symptoms at least twice a week. Next to simple occasional heartburn, this may be the most common of all the digestive disorders. A recent study showed that 25% of all Americans suffer from heartburn at least once a month. In 2002, 710,000 people were hospitalized due to acid reflux and other related esophageal disorders. There are no figures available on the number of dollars that Americans spend per year treating the digestive system disorders acid reflux and heartburn. This is due largely to the fact that many people treat these digestive disorders with over the counter antacids or other non-prescription medications and some people do not seek treatment at all ...

Herbal, nutritional supplements linked to ocular side effects
The researcher, Frederick W. Fraunfelder, M.D., assistant professor of ophthalmology in the OHSU School of Medicine and the OHSU Casey Eye Institute, found side effects ranging from dry eye to retinal hemorrhages and transient visual loss. Most of the side effects were associated with higher doses and topical application. While none of the reported cases caused permanent damage, many could have if the patient had not discontinued use of the product. A large segment of the population uses herbal medicines and nutritional supplements, many times without the treating physician s knowledge, said Fraunfelder, who also is director of the National Registry of Drug-Induced Ocular Side Effects based at the Casey Eye Institute. These products can cause ocular side effects and clinicians need to recognize these adverse events ...

Ergonomic stressors and upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders in automobile manufacturing: a one year follow up study |...
In this fixed cohort of automotive manufacturing workers, the prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders was similar at follow up to that found in the baseline survey of the same population. MSD cases were defined both on the basis of symptoms uniquely and also by the combination of symptoms plus physical examination findings. Although disorders by symptoms alone were slightly more frequent than disorders confirmed by physical examination, the two case types had quite similar risk factors. The cumulative incidence of new disorders was strongly associated with previously assessed level of exposure to combined ergonomic stressors affecting the upper extremity. Nearly 60% of subjects who had disorders at baseline were still (or again) cases in the second survey. We did not identify consistent predictors of persistence.. The incidence results generally confirmed our previous cross sectional findings. Length biased sampling means that a cross sectional study necessarily identifies ...

One other way to keep up-to-date on developments in your specialty is to attend the annual meeting of the American Society of Digestive Disease Interventions, that is endorsed by the Society of Interventional Radiology.. One of the conditions that is typically manifested in patients with end-stage liver disease is portal hypertension. This term is credited to Gilbert and Villaret in research studies they performed in 1906 to investigate the etiology of ascites (from the Greek term askites meaning baglike), a buildup of more than 25 mL of fluid in the peritoneal cavity of the abdomen.. The common symptoms begin with discomfort, an enlarged abdomen, increased weight, and shortness of breath, but later complications can include spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. The most common cause of this condition is cirrhosis of the liver.. Other causes include cancer, heart failure, pancreatitis, and tuberculosis. In cirrhosis, the underlying mechanism involves high blood pressure in the portal system and ...

OBJECTIVE
To define the prevalence, risk factors, and age at diagnosis of endocrinopathies in beta-thalassemia major (BTM) in Northwest Saudi Arabia.
METHODS
This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients with BTM attending a combined endocrine-hematology clinic in Al-Madinah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from March 2009 to December 2010. Clinical and biochemical data from the initial clinic visits were used to define the prevalence and age of diagnosis of endocrinopathies. Demographic and laboratory variables were analyzed to identify significant risk factors.
RESULTS
Eighty-one patients (42 males), aged 2-28 years were screened. Thirty-eight of them (46.9%) had at least one endocrinopathy. Of these, 28.9% (11/38) were aged less than 10 years. Hypogonadism was the most common complication detected in 52.7% (19/36) of patients of pubertal age group and 23.4% (19/81), of all cohort followed by short stature in 20.9% (17/81), subclinical hypothyroidism in 14.8% (12/81) and hypoparathyroidism

Endocrine gland - Wikipedia
Diseases of the endocrine glands are common,[4] including conditions such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, and obesity. Endocrine disease is characterized by irregulated hormone release (a productive pituitary adenoma), inappropriate response to signaling (hypothyroidism), lack of a gland (diabetes mellitus type 1, diminished erythropoiesis in chronic renal failure), or structural enlargement in a critical site such as the thyroid (toxic multinodular goitre). Hypofunction of endocrine glands can occur as a result of loss of reserve, hyposecretion, agenesis, atrophy, or active destruction. Hyperfunction can occur as a result of hypersecretion, loss of suppression, hyperplastic or neoplastic change, or hyperstimulation. Endocrinopathies are classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary. Primary endocrine disease inhibits the action of downstream glands. Secondary endocrine disease is indicative of a problem with the pituitary gland. Tertiary endocrine disease is associated with dysfunction ...

Effectiveness of workplace interventions in the prevention of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders and symptoms: an update...
Preventing UEMSD injury and disability is challenging. OHS practitioners are charged with designing and implementing solutions. Evidence-based approaches should help identify and implement more effective solutions. Optimal evidence-based practice employs the knowledge and experience of practitioners along with the most up-to-date evidence from the scientific literature in the context of the client (patient, worker, etc) to determine prevention solutions.113. It can be challenging for busy OHS practitioners to find and read the latest research on any given topic. This challenge is compounded by the increase in the number of OHS publications year to year. Using the same literature search strategy as the earlier review,23 we found over 9900 references in a 5-year period (2008-2013) as compared with approximately 15 400 in a much longer period (mid-1960s-2008). We did find a higher proportion of relevant high-quality studies (50% vs 39%) in the past 5 years as compared with the original ...

Unintentional injuries are an important cause of death in India. However, no reliable nationally representative estimates of unintentional injury deaths are available. Thus, we examined unintentional injury deaths in a nationally representative mortality survey. Trained field staff interviewed a living relative of those who had died during 2001-03. The verbal autopsy reports were sent to two of the130 trained physicians, who independently assigned an ICD-10 code to each death. Discrepancies were resolved through reconciliation and adjudication. Proportionate cause specific mortality was used to produce national unintentional injury mortality estimates based on United Nations population and death estimates. In 2005, unintentional injury caused 648 000 deaths (7% of all deaths; 58/100 000 population). Unintentional injury mortality rates were higher among males than females, and in rural versus urban areas. Road traffic injuries (185 000 deaths; 29% of all unintentional injury deaths), falls (160 000
