Natural Science I describes a range of courses that examine the foundations of the physical sciences¿physics and chemistry. At its core, the physical sciences seek to understand the role of matter and energy in explaining a broad range of phenomena, such as the large scale structure of the universe and the factors that affect the earth¿s climate. These investigations require the application of mathematical tools to quantify and predict our complex world. Natural Science I courses examine questions at the cutting edge of scientific investigation: What fundamental insights do scientists hope to gain from the Large Hadron Collider, the largest and most complex scientific experiment ever performed? Why have astronomers propose the unseen existence of dark matter and dark energy? What do investigations into the Earth¿s historical climate reveal about the scope of global climate change in the 20th and 21st centuries? Do renewable energy sources provide a feasible global alternative to fossil fuels ...

When you look at the history of the Natural sciences it emerged during the early 16th century. And during those days it mainly focused on the facts like minerals, natural objects, plants and animals. The civilization then was also curious about finding new discoveries of any other new natural objects. Today this concept is derived as observation and study made in any natural object or natural history of any nature present objects.. It is said that during those days were Natural sciences started its origin it was more of a subject which was must to be known for the survival of the human beings. That is when people started observing the behavior and nature of animals and plants and started noting it down. They also discovered the usefulness of plants as medicines and foods. Then it was passed down from generation to generations. As the civilization developed the Mesopotamian and the ancient Egyptian cultures started a formalized enquiry about these basic findings. The revolution of Newton in the ...

In todays A Lab Aloft, guest blogger Fred Kohl, Ph.D., International Space Station Physical Sciences Research project manager at NASAs Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, talks about some of the physical science investigations that take place in microgravity aboard the space station.. Extremes are part of exploration, whether youre talking about space travel or probing new areas of discovery to expand knowledge in a given science. So it is appropriate that the extreme environment of the International Space Station provides an ideal location to study physical sciences, from flames to fluids. Removing gravity from the equation aboard this Earth-orbiting laboratory reveals the fundamental aspects of physics hidden by force-dependent phenomena where a fluid phase (i.e., a liquid or gas) is present. Such experiments, which investigate the disciplines of fluid physics, complex fluids, materials science, combustion science, biophysics and fundamental physics, use the stations specialized experiment ...

Sadly, heres when fields like evolution and climate change run into fundamental roadblocks of the kind faced by social scientists; the sheer complexity of the system thwarts attempts at clean experiments. The big problem with fields like psychology, sociology and economics is that it is often difficult or even impossible to perform controlled experiments. Admittedly the situation here is worse than climate science, since the data itself is variable and represents a moving target (was the state of mind of your experimental subjects the same on Monday as on Tuesday?). Consider the hundreds of pop science books on neuroscience claiming that things like fMRI scans can explain emotions like hate and jealousy, and even spiritual and religious experiences. Other problems notwithstanding, how on earth do we not know that at the very least, like the perpetual observed-induced reality in quantum mechanics, we do not influence what we want to observe? But even in the apparently more rigorous discipline ...

The International workshop on Physics of Poly-Domain Liquid Crystalline Elastomers will be held on June 9-11, 2011, at 601, Pao Yue-Kong Library(North Gate Entrance) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, P.R. China. The physics of the poly-domain phase of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCE) has attracted strong interest from many of us for quite some time. In addition to their potential for technological applications, these systems pose fascinating fundamental questions about the statistical mechanics of amorphous solids that possess internal orientational order. In contrast to conventional (i.e., fluid) liquid crystals, within a nelastomer deformations of the LC order necessarily induce elastic strains in the solid itself. These would impose a large elastic energy cost on the system as a whole - as we would naively expect from our intuition about elastic solids. Regardless of our intuition, the LC order within a liquid crystalline elastomer, when cross-linked under isotropic conditions, ...

University of Basel. Dr. Arber was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of the restriction enzymes which opened new paths to genetic engineering. He is a Professor of Molecular Microbiology at the University of Basel. His main scientific interests are the mechanisms which promote and which limit exchange of genetic information in microorganisms. His research has been very important in the understanding of DNA. He has postulated a theory of molecular evolution, according to which the products of evolutionary genes carried in the genome are involved either in the generation or in the limitation of genetic variation, without implying a specific direction to biological evolution. Rather, the course of biological evolution results from the casual action of the products of evolutionary genes on DNA, from the conformational flexibility of the structures of biologically active molecules, from the largely stochastic nature of any interaction affecting genetic stability, and from chance ...

My research focuses on understanding of the molecular signal and machinery involved in egress Plasmodium falciparum merozoites from host erythrocytes, involving multidisciplinary approach such as live cell imaging, molecular biology, cell biology and protein chemistry. P. falciparum causes the most virulent form of malaria in humans leading to tremendous morbidity and mortality. All the clinical symptoms of malaria are attributed to the blood stage of the parasite life cycle. To complete its life cycle in blood stage, P. falciparum merozoites invade erythrocytes, replicate, and then exit by a process known as egress. The egress of P. falciparum merozoites from the host erythrocytes is an essential yet poorly understood process. Live video microscopy has played a special role in studies on egress and invasion. Real-time light microscopic visualization of in vitro blood-stage egress in live parasites has been performed in the simian parasite Plasmodium knowlesi and in P. falciparum. In both cases ...
Belgian biologists have rediscovered a hotspot for underwater life in the North Sea. In the vicinity of a few sandbanks along the Belgian coast, the fauna is flourishing just like it was a hundred years ago. Despite increased disruption due to fishing, the area is teeming with whelks, top shells and dead mans fingers.. The Belgian North Sea primarily has a sandy bed, but on the edges of some sandbanks there are gravel beds made up of rocks and pebbles. More than a hundred years ago Professor Gustave Gilson, a Belgian pioneer in biological marine research, ascertained that the biodiversity there was very high, differing greatly from the surrounding sandy areas. The gravel beds were also breeding grounds for fish, including herring, which found shelter there.. Over subsequent decades, the gravel areas were greatly diminished due to fishing: the stones were overturned or pulled up along with the catch, which meant the species that were typical of the region could no longer live there. But ten ...
In the presence of ever visible effects of global climate change, small scale wind turbines are considered as viable renewable systems. Horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) are popular for grid-connected power generation. Yet there is an increasing demand for small-scale portable power generation, typically away from the grid and provided by diesel generator and small scale photovoltaic panels. Small scale vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) can be used as power supplies for telecommunication towers, recreational and military camps away from the population. Moreover silent and aesthetic VAWT prototypes are attractive for urban use as well. Unlike HAWTs, VAWTs are omnidirectional and can obtain higher capacity factors in near-the-ground installations where the direction of the wind is more erratic than higher altitudes. There are two types of VAWT designs: drag-based and lift-based. In the drag-based Savonius design, drag force on the blades is asymmetric and wherever the wind blows the imbalance ...
Fuel cells are clean, compact and modular energy generation devices that generate electricity by a chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidant. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) offers several advantages for both mobile and stationary applications yet it is necessary to develop low cost and more efficient PEMFCs. The heart of the PEMFC is the membrane electrode assembly composed of a proton exchange membrane sandwiched between two porous gas diffusion electrodes. At this point, graphene is a promising candidate as catalyst support material for PEMFCs due to its outstanding mechanical, structural, and electronic properties. Herein, the support material becomes significant to get high catalytic performance of catalysts by lower catalyst loadings. For the production of advanced type of gas diffusion layers, the distinguished properties of graphene are combined with the structural properties of conducting polymers and the impregnation of low-amount of Pt catalysts on graphene ...

MATERIALS AND METHODS Plant materials and ClO2 treatments. Longan fruit cv. Daw at the harvesting stage (180 d after full bloom, 15-16% total soluble solid) were obtained from a commercial orchard in Lamphun province, Thailand and transported to the Postharvest Physiology and Technology Research Laboratory at Chiang Mai University under 25 °C within 2 h. Fruit were selected for uniformity in shape, color, size and lack of defects and divided into 6 groups of 330 fruit each. ClO2 gas was prepared according to Saengnil et al. (2014). The most effective concentration for reducing pericarp browning and maintaining fruit quality of longan was 10 mg L−1 for 10 min (Saengnil et al., 2014). A 10 min fumigation with 0 and 10 mg L-1 ClO2 was done in a chamber separately in triplicate. After fumigation, the chamber was ventilated for 30 min to remove any residual ClO2. The fumigated fruit in each group were placed in a commercial cardboard box (25 cm (L) × 17 cm (W) × 9 cm (H)), 30 fruit per box. All ...

Pyridine, one of bio-recalcitrant compounds, was treated with photocatalysis to break its molecular structure. It could not be oxidized by potassium dichromate until photocatalysis, which was proved by COD increasing with photocatalytic time increasing.Pyridine was taken as organic carbon source to reduce nitrate in denitrification, and experimental results indicated that nitrate removal percentage with photocatalysis was increased as 4.2 times as that without photocatalysis. When pyridine was treated with photocatalysis and used as organic carbon source for denitrification of 30 min,the nitrate removal percentage was equivalent to the same effect by adding 150 mg/L of glucose as carbon source, which suggested that biodegradability of pyridine was improved after photocatalysis, which could realize pyridine and nitrate removal at the same time.
