Healthcare workers who have received disaster preparedness education are more likely to report a greater understanding of disaster preparedness. However, research indicates that current nursing curricula do not adequately prepare nurses to respond to disasters. This is the first study to assess Asia-Pacific nurses perceptions about their level of disaster knowledge, skills, and preparedness. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 757 hospital and community nurses in seven Asia-Pacific countries. Data were collected using the modified Disaster Preparedness Evaluation Tool. Participants were found to have overall low-to-moderate levels of disaster knowledge, skills and preparedness, wherein important gaps were identified. A majority of the variance in disaster preparedness scores was located at the level of the individual respondent, not linked to countries or institutions. Multilevel random effects modelling identified disaster experience and education as significant factors of positive ...

Recent public health emergencies have highlighted the continuing need for public health officials to further improve communications with immigrant and refugee communities about the importance of being aware and prepared for infectious disease outbreaks, dangerous weather, public shootings, and other community emergencies. In 2016, Wilder Research was contracted by Hennepin County Public Health Emergency Preparedness to conduct a study about emergency preparedness planning with nine immigrant and refugee communities in the county (Mexican, Hmong, South Asian Indian, Somali, Ethiopian, Oromo, Guinean, Liberian, and Sierra Leonean). The goal was to gather information about the culturally specific needs and communications practices of these communities to inform policies, practices, and communications related to public health emergencies. Wilder Research interviewed 25 professionals and community leaders who work with immigrants in the Twin Cities to learn about the emergency preparedness needs of ...
Public health officials recently tested their plans to distribute over 120,000 doses of life-saving medication within 48 hours in case of a communicable disease outbreak in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties. The Homeland Security Administration requires local health departments to develop plans for distributing medications from the Strategic National Stockpile of pharmaceuticals and in coordination with local emergency operations centers.. When most people think of disasters, airplane crashes, explosions, or floods may come to mind. But a communicable disease outbreak can be a disaster too, said Carol Paxton, Director of Public Health Emergency Preparedness at the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. Diseases such as anthrax, plague, or tularemia can devastate communities without plans for quickly distributing life-saving medications to large numbers of residents and visitors. The agencies that participated in the exercise were the Health Department, the Little Traverse Bay ...

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services/Department for Public Health (CHFS/DPH) developed a set of pictogram signage for local health departments to use to direct people through Points of Dispensing (PODs) and mass care clinics that would serve as dispensing sites for SNS assets such as vaccines or prophylaxis. Pictogram signs use pictures to communicate information to people who may be challenged in understanding written or spoken English such as deaf and hard of hearing and non-English speaking people. These signs can be used to assist in meeting communications requirements of the CDCs state and local Technical Assessment Reviews (TARs). Many of the pictogram signs can also be used in an all-hazards manner. They can also be used at disaster assistance centers or in shelters.. The pictogram signage illustrates key POD functions, such as registration and, as a complete package, creates a step-by-step approach to public flow through a POD. These signs were designed to complement ...

The unexpected outbreak of an influenza pandemic in the spring of 2009 highlighted the need for states to prepare for all hazards, not just natural disasters and terrorist attacks. The pervasive threat of infectious disease and the more insidious threat of bioterrorism require that public health, emergency management and homeland security professionals work collaboratively to develop preparedness plans and strategies.. The NGA Center, in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services, has worked to raise awareness among governors of the threat of bioterrorism; to identify state priorities for enhancing public health preparedness; and to encourage regional approaches through which states can work collaboratively to share resources and expertise before, during and after a public health emergency.. The NGA Center assists governors and their staffs by:. ...

The Montgomery County, MD, Advanced Practice Center for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response and I would like to remind everyone that POD planning tools like the Clinic Planning Model Generator (CPMG) can be used to plan staffing and predict queueing and throughput H1N1 vaccination in PODs and in schools.. Some of these will be very simple - for instance, a school POD (clinic) may have just a vaccination station staffed by nurses. The inputs to the CPMG are the number of students at a school and the number of hours for the vaccination activity. The model will determine how many staff are needed. If the number needed exceeds the number available at the school, then increase the number of hours that the POD will operate.. If you have any questions, let me know at [email protected] (August 4, 2009) UPDATE: See also the CDCs list of Tools and Models to Estimate Staffing.. ...

Its heart-wrenching to watch all that people go through as natural disasters play out on our television screens. Tucked away, along with sympathy for those in the midst of a hurricane, earthquake, flood or other catastrophic events, is the very understandable thought, Im so glad thats not happening to me!. The truth is, however, that we are all susceptible to major life-changing events, and they can happen with very little notice. Those with a chronic medical condition, like diabetes, are especially vulnerable and should take seriously the advice to be prepared. Even if you dont live on the coast or near a river that is prone to flooding, everyone is susceptible to a life-threatening event - tornado, blizzard, wildfire, earthquake, chemical explosion and the list goes on. For those with diabetes, it is extremely important to have a diabetic-specific disaster preparedness kit ready to go in an instant, which may be all the time you have. Make sure that it is insulated and waterproof. Some ...

Plague, the disease caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis (Y. pestis), has had a profound impact on human history. In AD 541, the first great plague pandemic began in Egypt and swept across the world in the next four years. Population losses attributable to plague during those years were between 50 and 60 percent.. In 1346, the second plague pandemic, also known as the Black Death or the Great Pestilence, erupted, and within five years had ravaged the Middle East and killed more than 13 million in China and 20-30 million in Europe (one third of the European population).. Advances in living conditions, public health and antibiotic therapy make such natural pandemics improbable, but plague outbreaks following an attack with a biological weapon do pose a serious threat.. Plague is one of very few diseases that can create widespread panic following the discovery of even a small number of cases. This was apparent in Surat, India, in 1994, when an estimated 500,000 persons fled the city in fear of a ...

The successes and failures from this pandemic remain relevant, particularly as pathogens like MER-CoV and Ebola continue to proliferate. The Public Health Response to 2009 H1N1: A Systems Perspective draws lessons from the public health systems response to the influenza pandemic, offering a collection of chapters that are highly relevant to all public health emergencies. Not simply a historical case study, this analysis employs a systems perspective that encompasses both government health agencies and community-based entities such as care providers, schools, and media. This title demonstrates rigorous qualitative research approaches that can be used to analyze public health system responses to both pathogens and a wide variety of other public health emergencies.

Emergency preparedness means being prepared for all kinds of emergencies, able to respond in time of crisis to save lives and property and to help a community-or even a nation-return to normal life after a disaster occurs. To encourage Scouts of all ages to be prepared for emergency situations, the BSA has approved an Emergency Preparedness Award program for members of all ages. When a member has fulfilled the requirements, a completed application is submitted to the council. Upon approval, the Emergency Preparedness Award, No. 19-304 is awarded. The pin may be worn on civilian clothing or on the uniform, centered on the left pocket flap. The award may be earned more than once; for instance, as a young person advances through the ranks and is capable of more complex preparedness activities, but only one pin may be worn. It is a challenge to be prepared for emergencies in our world of man-made and natural phenomena. The Emergency Preparedness BSA program is planned to inspire the desire and ...

From a global perspective, the universality of gender-related societal issues is particularly significant. Although gender inequality is considered a sociological problem, the large number of female victims in disasters warrants an assessment of disaster management sciences. In this article, related concepts are discussed based on their relevance sociologically and in disaster management to develop a common terminology and examine this complex topic, which is rooted in different social profiles and anthropological heterogeneity throughout the world. A brief history is discussed, and significant examples are provided from different disasters in Turkey to illustrate why a woman-oriented approach should be adopted when evaluating concepts of gender inequality. Observations of disasters have shown that it is important to apply international standards (humanitarian charter and minimum disaster response standards), especially during periods of response and rehabilitation. Relevant factors related to gender

A hospitals capacity and preparedness is one of the important parts of disaster planning. Hospital-related incidents, a new phenomenon in Swedish healthcare, may lead to ambulance diversions, increased waiting time at emergency departments and treatment delay along with deterioration of disaster management and surge capacity. We aimed to identify the causes and impacts of hospital-related incidents in Region Västra Götaland (western region of Sweden). The regional registry at the Prehospital and Disaster Medicine Center was reviewed (2006-2008). The number of hospital-related incidents and its causes were analyzed. There were an increasing number of hospital-related incidents mainly caused by emergency departments overcrowdings, the lack of beds at ordinary wards and/or intensive care units and technical problems at the radiology departments. These incidents resulted in ambulance diversions and reduced the prehospital capacity as well as endangering the patient safety. Besides emergency department

The scenario: Content strategy in a «disaster response» mode is deployed when a project does not perform as expected after launch day. Another scenario would be using content strategy as a means to «sort out» a Web site without being integrated into a larger project, such as a re-design, re-launch or design from scratch.. Some general characteristics that apply to content strategy in disaster response mode include:. Content strategy, as a tool box, is brought in after the fact; it is used as a reaction to some sort of failure or suboptimal performance of a Web property.. The mandate is to «clean up and sort out», to address the most immediate points of failure, and to «make due» with whats already there or what can be «borrowed» (in terms of resources). This can lead to a focus on «yesterdays war» and embark on damage control for the disaster you know.. As «disaster» has already struck, for instance a suboptimal launch of a Web site or service, there is the danger of falling into ...

That issue was examined in a new study by Jennifer Oetzel, professor, American University and Chang Hoon Oh, William & Judy Docking Professor of Strategy, University of Kansas published in the Strategic Management Journal (SMJ).. Due to the increased frequency and severity of floods, storms, epidemics, wildfires and other natural hazards anticipated over the coming decades (according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), there is growing pressure on managers and their firms to develop strategies for managing natural disaster risk, write the researchers.. Preparing for future events that may never occur is challenging. Day-to-day events tend to crowd out long-term planning, but business continuity depends on managers anticipating and planning for large scale disasters. For these reasons, our goal in this study was to understand the antecedents associated with disaster preparation so that managers can better prepare for natural disasters.. They defined disaster preparedness ...

Disaster preparation is a major public health issue, and hospitals play a front-line role in responding to emergencies and disasters. A key concern identified by clinicians is one of being overwhelmed by patients but also by their families and the general public in the event of a disaster. In response to this concern, an online, workplace-based, interprofessional course in surge capacity building was developed and delivered to 72 health and allied staff from five acute care and community health care organizations. Three versions of the course were evaluated: a stand-alone online course; the online course plus a tabletop exercise; and the online course plus the tabletop plus an e-simulation exercise. A descriptive study, using surveys, was conducted to examine the impact of the online course on learners perceptions of their competency, their interprofessional skills, and satisfaction with the two different course delivery options. Learners made significant gains in their perceptions of surge and ...
