A method and apparatus for controlling the decision threshold and the sampling instant of a data regenerator wherein the data regenerator includes a second data path whose decision threshold can be shifted. By comparing the output data, it is possible to calculate the bit errors which are caused by a shifting of the decision threshold. By experimentally shifting the sampling instant and subsequently the decision threshold the optimal sampling instant and the optimal decision threshold are found.
It is easy to differentiate between a one-pound bag of rice and a two-pound bag of rice. There is a one-pound difference, and one bag is twice as heavy as the other. However, would it be as easy to differentiate between a 20- and a 21-pound bag?. Question: What is the smallest detectible weight difference between a one-pound bag of rice and a larger bag? What is the smallest detectible difference between a 20-pound bag and a larger bag? In both cases, at what weights are the differences detected? This smallest detectible difference in stimuli is known as the just-noticeable difference (JND).. Background: Research background literature on JND and on Webers Law, a description of a proposed mathematical relationship between the overall magnitude of the stimulus and the JND. You will be testing JND of different weights of rice in bags. Choose a convenient increment that is to be stepped through while testing. For example, you could choose 10 percent increments between one and two pounds (1.1, 1.2, ...
To study the nature of experience, one must be able to measure it. Weber came up with the concept of just-noticeable-difference (JND) which is the smallest change in magnitude of a stimulus that a person can detect.¹ The JND is directly related to the magnitude of that stimulus. Across all sensory domains, JND for a stimulus increases as its intensity increases in different ratios known as Weber fractions. These ratios are different for every sense. The JND is also known as the difference threshold. Psychological methods also rely heavily on the concepts of threshold (the point at which a stimulus, or change in value of a stimulus and be detected in general and the absolute threshold (the minimum values of a stimulus that can be detected).¹. This is a diagram of the cranial nerves. All chemical sensory information travels along these nerves to get in and out of the brain.² References ...

The GL model was defined in 2013 by mathematicians Antonio Galves and Eva Löcherbach.[1] Its inspirations included Frank Spitzers interacting particle system and Jorma Rissanens notion of stochastic chain with memory of variable length. Another work that influenced this model was Bruno Cessacs study on the leaky integrate-and-fire model, who himself was influenced by Hédi Soula.[4] Galves and Löcherbach referred to the process that Cessac described as "a version in a finite dimension" of their own probabilistic model. Prior integrate-and-fire models with stochastic characteristics relied on including a noise to simulate stochasticity.[5] The Galves-Löcherbach model distinguishes itself because it is inherently stochastic, incorporating probabilistic measures directly in the calculation of spikes. It is also a model that may be applied relatively easily, from a computational standpoint, with a good ratio between cost and efficiency. It remains a non-Markovian model, since the probability ...
Many frameworks, such as the socioecological model and the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), highlight the importance of considering intrapersonal variables alongside context. The SD model of thresholds for clinical decision-making proposes specific mechanisms to describe the relationship between the individual and his or her setting. For a wide range of parameter values, the assumption that screening directly increases accuracy while having an ambiguous effect on thresholds yields predictions that are broadly consistent with implementation trials of developmental-behavioral screening, including that not all positive screens will be referred and that changes in referral rates attributable to the implementation of screening may range widely depending on context and even decline in some circumstances. The key insight is that depending on the perspective of the decision-maker, increased accuracy may reduce FP errors and FN errors to different degrees. If only the former, ...

Background Recent studies have shown that specifically shaped biphasic waveforms can lower energy requirements for ventricular defibrillation. We prospectively compared the defibrillation efficacy of three different biphasic wave shapes incorporated in three commercially available implantable defibrillators. The results led to the development of a second protocol in which the importance of negative-phase peak voltage and duration was investigated.. Methods and Results Defibrillation threshold (DFT) testing using different biphasic waveforms was performed randomly on 42 patients undergoing implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator for ventricular arrhythmias. In 23 patients (group 1), 3 waveforms were tested: a CPI waveform with 60% positive-phase (P1) tilt and 50% negative-phase (P2) tilt, a Medtronic waveform with 65% fixed tilt in both P1 and P2, and a Ventritex waveform with 60% P1 tilt and a P2 leading edge voltage equal to half of the P1 trailing edge voltage. In 19 patients (group 2), 3 ...
The amount by which the SNR exceeds the detection threshold, DT, is called the signal excess (SE):. SE (decibels) = SNR - DT = (SL - 2TL + TS - NL) - DT. If the SE is greater than 0 dB, then the decision is made that the target is present. If the SE is negative, the decision is that the target is not present.. If the detection threshold is set high (which is equivalent to assuming that the signal power is high relative to the noise) only strong targets will exceed the threshold and be detected. There will not be many "false alarms" in which noise is mistakenly decided to be the signal of interest; however, there may be many "misses" in which the signal, though present, is not detected. If the threshold is set low, weaker targets will be detected, but the number of "false alarms" will also increase.. The following figure shows the importance of setting the detection threshold. The top trace (a) shows three target echoes with different amplitudes. The middle trace (b) shows the noise. The bottom ...

In this study, we wanted to take the first step in understanding vision in cichlids and to know whether they have true color vision. Further studies are needed to dissect the cichlid visual system as well as its adaptations and limitations but, given our visual modeling and behavioral results, we can infer the physiological characteristics of the cichlid retina. Initially, based on previous fish-vision studies applying the RNL model, we assumed a Weber fraction of 0.05 (Champ et al., 2016; Cheney et al., 2009; Dalton et al., 2016; Wilkins et al., 2016) for the LWS channel. However, in order to better predict cichlid performance, we adjusted this to a higher Weber fraction of 0.1. We did this because, even though we are not evaluating color discrimination thresholds, increasing the Weber fraction, and hence lowering chromatic distance, would partially explain the mistakes fish made (Figs 2 and 3). In general, a Weber fraction of 0.05 is accepted for most animals (Vorobyev and Osorio, 1998) but it ...
Working within the edge of ability and gaining fundamental stability is paramount for developing efficient stability and power. Unfortunately many clinicians and trainers overlook this low-threshold motor strategy.. Heres an example. I had an acute low back patient who was deadlifting 350 pounds. He could touch his toes, passed the ASLR test, his hips were strong, and he could hold a plank for hours. But when I took him through some low-threshold developmental stability patterns he started shaking all over the place. After he developed some low-threshold stability he went back to pain-free deadlifting and improved his PR by 20 pounds in the next month. Its not always this extreme, but shows a great example of how joint centration goes beyond rehab.. So there are 2 ways you can sell this to your patients:. Optimist: If you are really strong without a low-threshold motor program, then imagine how much stronger you would be with one.. Pessimist: If your strong without a low-threshold motor ...
Deterrents only work if theyre mapped to what people value. People with more to lose commit fewer crimes. This reflects the changing context of the cost-benefits-risks equation. Getting caught & going to jail means something different to a slum dwelling high school drop out than it does to a middle class Indian, because a middle class Indian has more to lose by going to jail (his freedom, status, job, money, friends, etc.) than a slum dwelling high school drop out (who will end up losing less since he has less of these to begin with and so places a lower value on their loss and is therefore more risk seeking). Governments can use this principle to decrease sexual predation by increasing the risk factors for offenders, thus changing their decision thresholds w.r.t offences. ...
Both Topper and Roady noted that the real key to-and benefit of-ATP indicator testing is trend analysis. There is no absolute number that indicates a "good" test result, Topper said. "A score is not necessarily good or bad, it is better or worse." Thus, each facility needs to use the testing to set a benchmark, then gauge progress or relapse from that. When a facility first begins ATP testing and/or its analysis, it is likely to see high numbers with a lot of variation, but as analysis continues and corrections are made, the numbers should come down, and there should be less variation. "This means that you are cleaning better and with more consistency," he said.. At that point, Topper added, you may set a lower threshold because you are getting better, and you now have a "new normal." And that is as it should be. "You should be continually evolving and your processes getting better.". The ability to analyze trends and make improvements also has become simpler with the continuing evolution of ATP ...

This invention describes a flexible radiation probe which has a pair of insulated gate field effect transistors integrated into the same substrate each having a gate, source and drain. The transistors are mounted at the end of a flexible circuit board. The flexible circuit board has conductive tracks which connect the gate, source and drains of each of the transistors to a connection at an opposite end of the flexible circuit board. This connection end may then be connected to a suitable differential biasing circuit for biasing the transistors, and a circuit for reading the differential threshold voltages of the transistors. This differential threshold voltage being indicative of radiation received by the transistors when exposed in the bias mode. The flexible circuit allows the probe to be used in catheters or similar medical equipment.
The aim of this work is to introduce and study simple neuron models with a dynamic threshold: The integrate and fire with dynamic threshold and a resonate and fire with dynamic threshold. The last model is a new model raised from an initial study of the integrate and fire with a dynamic threshold. The characteristics of the new model are studied from a mathematical point of view specially concerning the dynamical systems theory of the non-smooth systems. . In this project we will study analytically and computationally integrate-and-fire models with dynamic threshold, reproducing behaviors observed in the real nervoussystems, using techniques from non-smooth systems. Our goal is to describe the types of spiking patterns that can generate in response to steady and periodic current ...

This operator finds the threshold for given prediction confidences of soft classified predictions in order to turn it into a crisp classification. The optimization step is based on ROC analysis. ROC is discussed at the end of this description.. The Find Threshold operator finds the threshold of a labeled ExampleSet to map a soft prediction to crisp values. The threshold is delivered through the threshold port. Mostly the Apply Threshold operator is used for applying a threshold after it has been delivered by the Find Threshold operator. If the confidence for the second class is greater than the given threshold the prediction is set to this class otherwise it is set to the other class. This can be easily understood by studying the attached Example Process. Among various classification methods, there are two main groups of methods: soft and hard classification. In particular, a soft classification rule generally estimates the class conditional probabilities explicitly and then makes the class ...
The criteria used to define marginal decline in the present study were based on the principle that selected cut-off values should facilitate rapid computation in clinical practice. The current ATS criteria for significant change do not exactly capture the reproducibility of individual indices but are a close and user-friendly approximation. However, in pharmaceutical studies in which average population effects are defined rather than change in individual patients, clinical convenience is a lesser consideration and this prompted us to explore lower threshold values for marginal decline in the hope of amplifying the outcome signal. We demonstrated that threshold values of 4, 5 and 6% provided equivalent predictive power, whereas threshold values of 3 and 7% were non-discriminatory.. These findings have implications for the selection of end-points. In therapeutic trials of pirfenidone 8 and N-acetylcysteine 7 in IPF, average treatment effects were not definitive. With pirfenidone treatment, the ...

In vivo cortical recording reveals that indirectly driven neural assemblies can produce reliable and temporally precise spiking patterns in response to stereotyped stimulation. This suggests that despite being fundamentally noisy, the collective activity of neurons conveys information through temporal coding. Stochastic integrate-and-fire models delineate a natural theoretical framework to study the interplay of intrinsic neural noise and spike timing precision. However, there are inherent difficulties in simulating their networks dynamics in silico with standard numerical discretization schemes. Indeed, the well-posedness of the evolution of such networks requires temporally ordering every neuronal interaction, whereas the order of interactions is highly sensitive to the random variability of spiking times. Here, we answer these issues for perfect stochastic integrate-and-fire neurons by designing an exact event-driven algorithm for the simulation of recurrent networks, with delayed Dirac-like
Current era implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) have high defibrillation efficacy. This has stimulated a debate about whether DFT testing should be performed at all.1-3 However, this dialog has primarily centered around left sided implants, a group that is characterized by a small incidence of high defibrillation thresholds (DFTs).. The mechanism of phase duration programming to improve DFTs would seem to be most effectively applied to a group of patients with a high incidence of high DFTs such as right sided implants. This study therefore aims to prospectively evaluate direct phase duration programming on DFTs in right sided implants. ...
