Dibenz[a,h]anthracene has been shown to be carcinogenic to experimental animals.. Dibenz[a,h]anthracene is embryotoxic to rats when given at high doses. The available data on teratogenicity were inadequate for evaluation. Dibenz[a,h]anthracene was positive in differential survival assays using DNA-repair-proficient/-deficient strains of bacteria and was mutagenic to Salmonella typhimurium in the presence of an exogenous metabolic system. In cultured mammalian cells, dibenz[a,h]anthracene was mutagenic and induced unscheduled DNA synthesis in the presence of an exogenous metabolic system. It was positive in assays for morphological transformation. In the one available study, it induced sister chromatid exchange but not chromosomal aberrations in vivo.. There is sufficient evidence that dibenz[a,h]anthracene is active in short-term tests. ...

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibres were produced and evaluated for wound dressing applications. However, the solubility of the poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix in the aqueous medium generally limits its applications. To overcome this problem, 1,2,3,4 butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and citric acid (CA) were used as crosslinking agents. Successful bead-free nanofibres were produced, and they both preserved their fibrous structure after water treatment. The mean fibre diameters of polycarboxylic acid crosslinked nanofibres were lower compared to pure PVA nanofibres. Although the morphology of BTCA and CA crosslinked nanofibres was similar, the swelling degree of PVA/CA was found to be higher. Furthermore, toxicity and keratinocyte cell proliferation performance of produced PVA/BTCA and PVA/CA nanofibres indicated that these nanofibrous materials could be used in wound dressing applications. ...

An increase in zoxazolamine (2-amino-5-chlorobenzoxazole) metabolism, as determined either by paralysis time or by an enzyme assay in vitro, is associated with aryl hydrocarbon (benzo[a]pyrene) hydroxylase induction among inbred strains of aromatic hydrocarbon-treated, genetically "responsive" mice, does not occur in inbred, genetically "nonresponsive," aromatic hydrocarbon-treated mice, and segregates (p , 0.01) with the Ah locus in the appropriate genetic crosses between "responsive" and "nonresponsive" mice. Hexobarbital metabolism, as determined by sleeping time, is not associated with the Ah locus in either inbred or hybrid mice. The inbred strains used for zoxazolamine and hexobarbital studies were C57BL/6N, BALB/cAnN, C3G/HeN, DBA/2N, and AKR/N. A rise in 5,5-diphenylhydantoin metabolism, as determined by the increased formation of p-hydroxy and 3,4-dihydrodiol derivatives in vitro, is associated with the presence of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase induction among aromatic ...
Sediments from four inshore industrial sites and a reference site in the Great Lakes were extracted with solvents and characterized chemically for polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). An aqueous phase and a crude organic extract were obtained. The crude organic extract was further resolved into fractions A-2 (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and A-3 (nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds), which were analyzed for PACs by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The extracts and fractions were tested for mutagenicity in three assays: Ames, rat hepatocyte unscheduled DNA synthesis, and Chinese hamster ovary hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (CHO/HGPRT). Sediments from the industrial sites contained 27 to 363 μg/g total PACs; the reference site, less than 1 μg/g. Qualitative differences in the residue profiles among the sites were attributable to the probable sources of the PACs (petroleum versus combustion). Only one industrial site yielded measurable (0.1

BACKGROUND: We investigated if blood Cu++/Zn++ superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase activities are increased and total plasma antioxidant concentration is decreased in coke oven workers exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. METHODS Ninety-six coke oven workers participated in the study. Nonexposed workers (n = 105) were randomly sampled among power plant workers in the same age range. The examination included a questionnaire on health status, occupational history, smoking, and dietary habits. Blood samples completed the examination. Coke oven workers were classified into low-, middle-, and high-exposure groups based on the benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) air concentrations and were further classified into the categories 'topside' and 'non-topside,' according to their proximity to the ovens. RESULTS: Erythrocyte glutathiane peroxidase activity increased with age (r = 0.18, P = 0.061) in power plant workers, whereas plasma glutathione peroxidase activity decreased with age (r = -0.18,

Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) was induced 15-fold in Ambystoma tigrinum by intraperitoneal injection of 3-methylcholanthrene in corn oil, or 10-fold by addition of aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons to the aqueous environment of the neotene animal. The cytochrome P-450-associated microsomal enzyme is similar to the inducible, one-gene, autosomal-dominant system typical in the laboratory mouse and man. Differences in optimal temperature for enzyme induction and activity were noted in organ culture of human and Ambystoma tissues, and ratios of benzpyrene metabolites differed between Ambystoma and Mus. The half life of enzyme activity induced in vivo was related to the excretion of hydrocarbon metabolites.
JL13 [5-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)-8-chloro-pyrido[2,3-b][1,5] benzoxazepine fumarate] is a substance with a close structural resemblance to clozapine. However, it is less sensitive to oxidation and may therefore have less hematological side effects. In the present study, JL13 was compared with clozapine and haloperidol in several animal models for schizophrenia. The paw test represents a screening model for antipsychotic drugs that can discriminate between drugs with extrapyramidal side effects and drugs without. Haloperidol increased both forelimb retraction time and hindlimb retraction time (HRT), whereas both clozapine and JL13 increased only HRT. In the prepulse inhibition paradigm, all three drugs reversed the apomorphine- and the amphetamine-induced disruption of prepulse inhibition. However, whereas haloperidol was equally effective against both dopaminergic drugs, JL13 and clozapine were more effective against amphetamine. Finally, only JL13 was able to increase prepulse inhibition in ...

Three (possibly four) living species of peccaries are found from the southwestern United States through Central America and into South America and Trinidad.. The collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) or "musk hog", referring to the animal's scent glands, occurs from the southwestern United States into South America and the island of Trinidad. The coat consists of wiry peppered black, gray, and brown hair with a lighter colored "collar" circling the shoulders. They bear young year-round, but most often between November and March, with the average litter size consisting of two to three piglets. They are found in all kinds of habitats, from arid scrublands to humid tropical rain forests. The collared peccary is well adapted to habitat disturbed by humans, merely requiring sufficient cover; they can be found in cities and agricultural land throughout their range. Notable populations exist in the suburbs of Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, where they feed on ornamental plants and other cultivated ...
Bioflavonoids are plant compounds touted for their potential to treat or prevent several diseases including cancers induced by common environmental chemicals. Much of the biologic activity of one such class of pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), is mediated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor/transcription factor (AhR). For example, the AhR regulates PAH immunotoxicity that manifests as pre-B cell apoptosis in models of B cell development. Because bioflavonoids block PAH-induced cell transformation and are structurally similar to AhR ligands, it was postulated that some of them would suppress PAH-induced, AhR-dependent immunotoxicity, possibly through a direct AhR blockade. This hypothesis was tested using a model of B cell development in which pre-B cells are cultured with and are dependent on bone marrow stromal or hepatic parenchymal cell monolayers. Of seven bioflavonoids screened, galangin (3,5,7-trihydroxyflavone) blocked PAH-induced but not C(2)-ceramide- or H(2)O(2)-induced ...

Linear saturated dicarboxylic acids are a class of organic chemical compounds with two carboxyl functional groups (-COOH) at the extremities of their aliphatic chains. This class of organic acids can be represented by the general molecular formula HOOC-(CH2)n-COOH. The most common values for n with their respective acid names are present in Table I. The general chemical behavior and reactivity of these compounds are similar to monocarboxylic acids, and they are all widely used in the production of copolymers, such as polyamides and polyesters (Refs. 1-3). The easy conversion of carboxyl groups to esters has industrial importance since many esters are used as taste and odor enhancers. Carboxylic acids are also used as catalysts, replacing ecologically unfavorable organic halides (Ref. 4). Over the last three decades, interest in such acids has increased, specifically regarding their application to improve the corrosion resistance of metallic substrates such as zinc, copper, iron, and aluminum ...
The Botryosphaeriaceae is a diverse family of endophytes and fungal pathogens of mainly woody plants. We considered the host range and distribution of these fungi by sampling diseased ornamental and forest trees and shrubs in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, spanning a Mediterranean and a Continental climatic region. In total, ten Botryosphaeriaceae species were identified in the Western Balkans and with the exception of Sphaeropsis visci and Phaeobotryon cupressi, which occurred on one host, all the species had a broader host range. Phaeobotryon cupressi was found only in the Mediterranean region and S. visci, Dothiorella sp., Dothiorella sarmentorum and Diplodia seriata were present only in the Continental region. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on a variety of hosts from which the Botryosphaeriaceae species were isolated. These included leaves and/or stems of seedlings of 21 hosts, and cut leaves and/or branches of six hosts. Moreover, stems of seedlings of Chamaecyparis ...
In captivity, cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) frequently suffer from several unusual chronic diseases that rarely occur in their free-ranging counterparts. In order to develop a better understanding of their metabolism and health we documented the urine organic acids of 41 apparently healthy captive cheetahs, in an untargeted metabolomic study, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 339 organic acids were detected and annotated. Phenolic compounds, thought to be produced by the anaerobic fermentation of aromatic amino acids in the distal colon, as well as their corresponding glycine conjugates, were present in high concentrations. The most abundant organic acids in the cheetahs urine were an as yet unidentified compound and a novel cadaverine metabolite, tentatively identified as N1,N5-dimethylpentane-1,5-diamine. Pantothenic acid and citramalic acid concentrations correlated negatively with age, while glutaric acid concentrations correlated positively with age, suggesting possible ...
The fumonisins are a group of mycotoxins produced primarily by Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium proliferatum, although a few other Fusarium species also may produce them. Traditionally, Fusarium moniliforme is the fungal species associated with fumonisins, but this name is no longer used, due to advances in taxonomy and nomenclature. There are at least 28 different forms of fumonisins, most designated as A-series, B-series, C-series, and P-series. Fumonisin B1 is the most common and economically important form, followed by B2 and B3. Maize is the most commonly contaminated crop, and fumonisins are the most common mycotoxins in maize, although these toxins can occur in a few other crops as well. Fusarium verticillioides and fumonisins are distributed worldwide. The primary health concerns associated with fumonisins are acute (single exposure) toxic effects in horses and swine, and carcinogenic (able to cause cancer) properties. Horses that are poisoned with fumonisins may develop a fatal ...

Dibenz(a,h)anthracene has produced tumours by different routes of administration in mice, rats, guinea pigs, frogs, pigeons and chickens. It has both local and systemic carcinogenic effects.. On oral administration, it produced tumours of the forestomach in the mouse; intratracheal administration to rats produced lung tumours. In repeated skin painting experiments in mice, dibenz(a,h)anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene appeared to be equally effective. In a dose-response study on s.c. carcinogenicity with dibenz(a,h)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene and 3-methylcholanthrene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene was shown to be effective at a lower dose than that effective for benzo(a)pyrene or for 3-methylcholanthrene; its latent period, however, was longer. Dibenz(a,h)anthracene induced local sarcomas and increased the incidence of lung adenomas following a single s.c. injection in newborn mice at dose levels which were ineffective with 3-methylcholanthrene. It has not been adequately tested in other species. ...

Antiparkinsonian effects of tandospirone, a selective 5-HT1A receptor agonist, were evaluated using rat models of Parkinson's disease. Tandospirone reversed catalepsy induced by the D2 antagonist haloperidol, in a dose-dependent manner. The anti-cataleptic action of tandospirone was comparable to that of bromocriptine and greater than that of L-DOPA. In rats with unilateral dopaminergic lesion by 6-hydroxydopamine, tandospirone markedly induced contralateral rotation. Furthermore, tandospirone dose-dependently restored spontaneous locomotor activity in reserpine-treated rats. These antiparkinsonian effects of tandospirone were abolished by coadministration of WAY-100635, a selective 5-HT1A antagonist, but not by haloperidol. The present results suggest that tandospirone has a therapeutic potential in treating parkinsonian symptoms, which is brought about through activation of 5-HT1A receptor.
The majority of MPA-CVD reactors are largely axisymmetric, and thus, the majority of MPA-CVD simulation in the literature is performed in 2D. This disregards the possibility of non-axisymmetric perturbations to the plasma distribution. Here, we perform a 3D Maxwell eigenvalue analysis of two MPA-CVD reactor geometries to investigate the possibility of the electric field distribution being polluted by neighbouring non-axisymmetric resonant modes that operate close to the applied frequency. Additionally, we uncover a curious occurrence whereby a spurious eigenvalue spectrum is obtained when employing a higher order boundary representation in conjunction with a standard DGFEM for Maxwell's equations; as far as we are aware, this is not covered in the literature, but was overcome by application of a Piola covariant transformation.. ...
Acrylate polymers belong to a group of polymers which could be referred to generally as plastics. They are noted for their transparency, resistance to breakage, and elasticity. They are also commonly known as acrylics or polyacrylates. Acrylate polymer is commonly used in cosmetics such as nail polish as an adhesive. Acrylate monomers used to form acrylate polymers are based on the structure of acrylic acid, which consists of a vinyl group and a carboxylic acid terminus. Other typical acrylate monomers are derivatives of acrylic acid, such as methyl methacrylate in which one vinyl hydrogen and the carboxylic acid hydrogen are both replaced by methyl groups, and acrylonitrile in which the carboxylic acid group is replaced by the related nitrile group. Other examples of acrylate monomers are: Methacrylates Methyl acrylate Ethyl acrylate 2-Chloroethyl vinyl ether 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate Hydroxyethyl methacrylate Butyl acrylate Butyl methacrylate TMPTA Acrylic elastomer is a general term for a type of ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Effect of catechol estrogens on rat mammary tumors. AU - Abul-Hajj, Yusuf J.. PY - 1979/12/1. Y1 - 1979/12/1. N2 - The effect of 1,3,5(10)-estratriene-3,16α, 17β-triol (estriol), 1,3,5(10)-estratriene-2,3-diol-17-one (2-hydroxyestrone), and 1,3,5(10)-estratriene-2,3,17β-triol (2-hydroxyestradiol) on the growth of dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced mammary tumor and of R3230AC-transplantable mammary tumor was compared with that produced by estradiol benzoate treatment. Estriol showed minimal inhibition of tumor growth in dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced tumor and no effect on R3230AC tumor while 2-hydroxyestrone showed no effect of tumor inhibition. On the other hand, 2-hydroxyestradiol showed appreciable inhibition of tumor growth in both tumors studied. That 2-hydroxyestradiol has been found to bind to estrogen receptors in mammary tumors and is uterotropic suggests that the inhibition of tumor growth by 2-hydroxyestradiol may be similar to the mechanism of inhibition of ...
Five types of nanofibrous membranes were prepared by electrospinning poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA), poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (P(LA/CL)), poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PDLGA) and methoxy polyethylene glycol-poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (MPEG-PLGA), respectively. These electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENFMs) were used to adsorb anthracene (ANT), benz[a]anthracene (BaA) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) from aqueous solution, and the sorption kinetics and isotherms of these PAHs on the five ENFMs were investigated. The pseudo-second-order model (PSOM) can well describe the sorption kinetics of the three PAHs on five ENFMs, and the partition-adsorption model (PAM) can interpret the sorption processes of PAHs on the ENFMs. PCL ENFMs, which had the largest surface areas (8.57 m(2)g(-1)), exhibited excellent sorption capacity for ANT at over 4112.3 ± 35.5 μg g(-1). Moreover, the hydrophobicity and pore volume of ENFMs significantly affected the sorption kinetics and sorption capacity
In the mammalian dentate gyrus (DG) neurogenesis continues throughout life. Accumulating evidence suggests a unique contribution of adult-generated neurons in DG synaptic plasticity and hippocampal-mediated learning and memory functions. However, the precise involvement of adult neurogenesis to disease-related cognitive deficits still remains unclear. Intellectual disabilities are the most striking clinical features of Down Syndrome (DS) and are characterized by learning deficits and memory impairment, particularly in hippocampus-related functions. Accordingly, the Ts65Dn mouse model of DS recapitulate many hippocampal cognitive deficits of the human syndrome, and also show decreased adult neurogenesis and impaired DG synaptic plasticity. To elucidate the contribution of faulty adult neurogenesis to DG synaptic plasticity deficits and memory impairment in DS we have treated adult Ts65Dn mice with lithium, a widely used mood stabilizer that also promotes neurogenesis. Results showed that chronic ...
1-Pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid is an enamine or an imino acid that forms on spontaneous dehydration of L-glutamate γ-semialdehyde in aqueous solutions. The stereoisomer (S)-1-Pyrroline-5-carboxylate is an intermediate in glutamate metabolism, in arginine degradation and in proline biosynthesis and degradation and it can be converted to or be formed from the three amino acids L-glutamate, L-ornithine and L-proline. In particular, it is synthesized with the oxidation of proline by pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase 1 (EC 1.5.1.2, PYCR1) or by proline dehydrogenase (EC 1.5.99.8, PRODH) and it is hydrolyzed to L-glutamate by delta-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase (EC 1.5.1.12, ALDH4A1). It is also one of the few metabolites that can be a precursor to other metabolites of both the urea cycle and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle ...
An investigation for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in airborne particulates using thermal desorption and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is described. Samples are obtained from ambient air using fibreglass filters and the volatile material from the filter is thermally desorbed to gas chromatograph. A 30 meter capillary column is used to separate the hydrocarbons and eight polyaromatic hydrocarbons are used to test the method and recovery is >95%. The eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthrene, pyrene, benzo (a) anthracene, chrysene, benzo (a) pyrene and benzo (e) pyrene were the most abundant PAHs found in the samples of ambient air with current method at Uxbridge-London. Application of the measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air samples shows that the hydrocarbons trapped in the particle phase to a lesser degree at higher ambient temperature. In conclusion a method has been developed to transfer the PAHs in ...
But perversely, the war in Yemen was a boon to the Egyptian chemical weapons program. It encouraged the military to study and refine its weapons as well as increase its stockpiles, according to Shoham. Egyptian forces went on to study pesticides like fluoroacetates and oxazepine as potential weapons, and developed weaponized sarin, VX nerve agent and 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate: a hallucinogen more commonly known as BZ.. In another sense, Yemen was a laboratory for the Egyptian program which would go on to inform development of the weapons as a deterrent against Israel. (Always considered, as far as the Egyptian high command was concerned, to be the greater threat.) However, in both the 1967 war and the 1973 wars with Israel, Egypt did not use chemical weapons even while - in 1973 - chemical warfare units were on stand-by. This, Shoham wrote, was due to fear of Israeli retaliation.. A similar logic was at work in Syria, which exchanged resources with Egypt, then a close ally. Egypt would go on to ...
We examined the effects of several agents, including dietary flavonoids, on CYP1A1 expression utilizing a recently developed high-throughput screening system for assessing human cytochrome P450 (CYP) induction. HepG2 cells, stably integrated with regulatory regions of human CYP1A1, were treated with resveratrol, apigenin, curcumin, kaempferol, green tea extract (GTE), (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), quercetin, and naringenin. Of these flavonoids, resveratrol produced the greatest increase in CYP1A1-mediated luciferase activity (10-fold), whereas GTE, apigenin, curcumin, and kaempferol produced 2- to 3-fold increases in activity. Compared with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), omeprazole, or benzanthracene, where increases in luciferase activity ranged from 12- to 35-fold, these flavonoids exhibited weak agonist activity. The remaining compounds, EGCG, quercetin, and naringenin, produced negligible effects. Cotreatment of cells with TCDD and GTE, naringenin, and apigenin resulted ...

Against this backdrop, Pb was employed as the structural element for Co as the catalytic component. Electrodeposition of CoPbOx was similar to that for CoMnOx with the precursor solution containing equal concentrations of Co2+ and Pb2+ in MePi buffer at pH 8. However, the potentials for CoOx and PbOx deposition are similar (∼1.15 V) unlike that for CoOx and MnOx deposition; thus, the composition of the mixed metal film could not be as easily controlled through varying the potential. Instead, the initial concentrations of Co2+ and Pb2+ can be relatively adjusted to change composition. For solutions containing equal concentrations of Co2+ and Pb2+, electrodeposited CoPbOx films contain 18% Co and 82% Pb (as measured by ICP-MS, Table S1†) with homogeneous distribution of the two metals throughout the film (as observed from EDS elemental maps from SEM, Fig. S4c†). The use of CoPbOx as a stable electrode has precedence in the electrosynthesis of oxidants, decomposition of organics, as well as ...
Despite the existence of several studies showing a lipid-lowering effect of squalene synthase inhibitors, so far, no data exist on the effect of any such compound on atherosclerosis in vivo. The experimental model of diet-induced atherosclerosis in rabbits has been extensively used to study the role of different pathways in atherogenesis as well as to evaluate the ability of pharmacological treatment to modulate atherosclerosis mainly because the atherosclerotic lesions in this model resemble those occurring in humans (Sugano et al., 1996; Yang et al., 1998). High cholesterol levels are easily achieved in rabbits fed an HC diet. However, the cholesterol-lowering effect of statins is a phenomenon restricted to higher animal species, including primates and man, because in lower animals, enzyme inhibition is followed by a dramatic rise of tissue enzyme levels blunting the plasma cholesterol-lowering response (Endo, 1992).
