• A new urine test can distinguish among different causes of kidney dysfunction in kidney transplant recipients. • If validated in larger multicenter study, the test may allow patients to avoid invasive kidney biopsies.
New research shows that a substance indicating oxidative damage increases in urine as people get older, and describes an easy method to measure the level of this biomarker in human urine samples. This potentially provides a method to measure how much our body has aged, which could help predict our risk of developing age-related disease, and even our risk of death.
This study could be criticized because heart rate was uncontrolled by cardiac pacing and the rate-pressure product was not held constant during the study. Although the patients were not paced during bladder distention, the degrees of changes in the rate-pressure product between the two groups were similar. Thus, the changes in the rate-pressure product could not be a major factor of vasoconstriction during bladder distention.. Another limitation of the present study was a lack of normal control data for ethical reasons. The invasive nature of the study made it impractical to have a normal control group. Instead, each patient serves as his or her own control.. The third limitation of the present study was the poor sensitivity of the surface ECG to detect myocardial ischemic during bladder distention. Sutton et al. (34) reported on the electrical focus, causing the ST segment changes to be a localized area of myocardium, and therefore may not be apparent on the leads of a surface ECG. Besides, the ...
A simple urine test detected one out of three children with autism spectrum disorder in a new study, and researchers say the test could result in earlier diagnosis and potentially lead to customized treatments for a subset of children with elevated levels of certain compounds in their urine.. The study included 76 boys from Oregon and Washington - 44 with an autism spectrum disorder and 32 without a developmental disorder.. Nick Heyer, a senior research scientist at Battelles Seattle lab, said he believes the research can be reproduced on a larger scale and hopefully lead to a widely available screening test for babies.. If it can detect increased risk of autism at age 1, that would be fantastic, he said. Its the only biomarker (test) Im aware of that could be done noninvasively and fairly inexpensively. Im really pretty optimistic and excited about getting it retested.. Heyer said he is trying to incorporate the urine test into a study of 1,200 pregnant mothers who already have other ...

For example, cytotoxic T cells genetically constructed with chimeric antigen receptors have been actively explored for focusing on tumor surface LIPG antigens.1 However, difficulties remain with these self-antigen targeted therapies owing to the presence of self-antigens on normal tissues and the inability to turn off persistent T cell activity.2 Alternatively, ligandCantigen adaptor molecules that bind avidly to tumor surface receptors (the folate receptor) enable exogenous antigens displayed on tumors to result in immune reactions.3 Albeit powerful, these methods rely on tumor-specific high affinity receptors that are often not defined in many cancers. A simple urine test can indicate a premenopausal womans risk of suffering bone fractures as she ages, according to new research led by University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health epidemiologists.
As men get older, some of the most common health problems they develop are related to their bladder and prostate. There are a number of symptoms men may develop and not understand what they mean or why they are having them. Therefore, it is important to be on the lookout for some of the most common conditions and get checked to see if they need further treatment. Many men go on living with symptoms that may be underlying problems to larger conditions that require treatment.. 1. Hematuria (aka blood in the urine). Blood in the urine is not normal. It may be an early warning sign of a number of serious health conditions, such as a bladder or kidney infection, kidney stones, kidney cancer, or bladder cancer. If you see blood in your urine, the urologist will start by doing a simple urine test called a urinalysis to test for the presence and amount of microscopic blood in the urine. They may also do a cystoscopy to look inside your bladder, or refer you for an x-ray or CT scan. Do not wait to see a ...
Diabetes occurs when your body does not make enough insulin, or your bodys cells do not use insulin normally.. Insulin helps the body use or store glucose from food. Often, patients with diabetes have high blood sugar levels. These high blood sugar levels cause damage to many organs and muscles in your body, including your kidneys. Diabetes causes damage to the blood vessels in the kidneys. The vessels become both stiff and leaky.. As the damage from diabetes gets worse, many of the waste products that the kidneys usually remove from the body stay in the blood. At the same time, some of the protein and nutrients that should stay in the blood are lost in the urine. A simple urine test can check for protein in the urine. Protein in the urine indicates there has been damage done to the kidneys.. Even people with controlled diabetes are at higher risk for kidney disease, than others. Medical scientists are still unsure of the relationship between diabetes and kidney disease, whether it is due to ...
A person can have kidney disease without being aware of it, as there are often no symptoms until the disease has advanced. Research has shown that people who are at a higher risk for kidney disease should have their kidneys checked even if they feel well. A simple urine test and blood work can detect early signs of kidney disease.. If you believe you are at risk for kidney disease, ask your doctor how often you should be tested. If you can catch and treat kidney disease early on, you may be able to slow it down! Also remember to check your blood pressure and have labs done at least once a year.. ...
Kidney disease often has no symptoms, and it can go undetected until very advanced. But a simple urine test can tell you if you have kidney disease. Remember, its important to get tested because early detection and treatment can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. ...
Dr. James Greenblatt, a Boston-area psychiatrist, had a puzzling case: a teenager arrived in his office with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and an array of digestive problems. Marys parents had been running around for many years and shed had a poor response to medicine, said Greenblatt, founder of Comprehensive Psychiatric Resources Inc. in Waltham, Mass. When a patient doesnt respond, thats a red flag. Greenblatt first did a simple urine test for the metabolite HPHPA, the chemical byproduct of the clostridia bacteria, and found that it was elevated. He put her on a course of high-powered probiotics to boost her good bacteria, followed by antibiotics, and her levels began to dramatically go down, he said. After six months, Marys symptoms began to disappear. And by a year, they were gone. Today, three years later, Mary is a senior in high school and has no sign of either mental disorder. Read about the ins and outs ...
Misti Crane. A simple urine test identified one-third of the children with autism spectrum disorder in a new study, and researchers say that could lead to earlier diagnoses. Furthermore, this kind of work could lead to better-tailored treatments for a subset of children with elevated levels of certain compounds in their urine, said James Woods, a researcher at the University of Washington who worked with Battelle researchers on the project. The relatively small study included 76 boys from Oregon and Washington, 44 of whom had autism spectrum disorder and 32 who did not have a developmental disorder. Nick Heyer, a senior research scientist at Battelles Seattle lab, worked on the study and said hes hopeful it can be replicated on a larger scale and lead to a widely available screening test for babies. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a T-lymphocyte killer cell (small), attacking two large cancerous tumour cells. The lymphocyte, a white blood cell, must make intimate contact with the tumour cell. It does so by recognizing antigens on the tumours surface. Following contact, the tumour cell undergoes distinct structural changes; loss of microvilli (small projections), perforation & ultimately death. The tumour cell may defend itself by budding off a number of blebs or blisters, which form a protective barrier, preventing any contact by the lymphocyte. Background: Inflammatory responses facilitate metastasis by increasing expression of adhesion molecules. Dietary restriction (30% reduction in daily calorie intake) reduces the expression of adhesion molecules and protects against surgically induced inflammation. DR might therefore beneficially interfere with surgery-induced inflammation and subsequent adhesion of circulating tumor cells. Methods: BALB/c mice were subjected to 2 weeks dietary restriction prior to inoculation with tumor cells. Intra-splenic injection of 5.0 × 104C26-colon carcinoma cells was followed by splenectomy. Hepatic tumor load was scored after 10 days as a percentage (tumor surface/total liver surface) on H&E stained sections. Liver mRNA expression of adhesion molecules was determined and the effect of serum from dietary restriction mice on in vitro tumor growth and adhesion capacity was assessed. Results: Preoperative dietary restriction significantly reduced mRNA expression levels of E-selectin (P = 0.0087) and hepatic ...

Gluten is a protein that comes from wheat and related grains. Casein is the protein that comes from dairy products. When these proteins are incompletely metabolized, active intermediates called gluteomorphin (from the gluten) and casomorphin (from the casein) result.. These peptides have been shown to bind to opiate receptors in the brain, thus mimicking the effects of opiate drugs like heroin and morphine. The process can create a physical addiction to wheat and dairy, often see in children with autism and those that are addicted to carbohydrates.. A simple urine test to measures the levels of these peptides excreted in the patient`s urine can determine how well these two foods are being metabolized and is an indication of the health of the GI tract.. Gluten sensitivity can also be associated with celiac disease.. ...

Increased mucosal infiltration by leucocytes is a characteristic feature of inflammatory bowel disease and chemotactic factors play a key role in the recruitment of inflammatory cells. Intestinal epithelial cells act as the interface between the contents of the gut lumen and the internal milieu, which places them in an ideal position to detect and respond to proinflammatory stimuli.. In this study we have shown that human colonic cell lines, HT29-19A and Caco-2, express distinct patterns of chemokine secretion, both constitutively and after stimulation by inflammatory agonists. HT29-19A cells, which have a phenotype similar to that expected of Cl− secretory cells in the crypt epithelium,18 secreted high levels of both IL-8 and GROα, primarily in response to TNF-α and IL-1. These chemokines were secreted in parallel, probably via a common pathway as judged by their virtually identical time course for secretion and dose responsiveness to cytokine stimulation, suggesting that they may have ...
Kevin Wu, Austin Taylor, Medical Robotics Lab, College of Engineering, UGA. Email: [email protected], [email protected] Tel: 706-542-4189. Project Description:. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among males, leading to approximately 27,000 deaths in the United States [1]. Focal laser ablation (FLA) has been shown to be a promising approach for prostate cancer treatment. FLA has the potential to efficiently destroy cancer cells while inflicting less damage on surrounding tissues and therefore causing fewer side effects than other treatments. However, there are several drawbacks to the current clinical workflow for carrying out FLA procedures.. In order to ablate a tumor on the prostate, a laser-held in a catheter-must be guided to specific locations on the tumors surface. Currently, physicians use a rigid template to assist with guiding the FLA catheter to the target position. Drawbacks of the conventional approach for catheter targeting are 1) the limited range of motion allowed by the ...

In this paper a generalized model for the growth of avascular tumours is presented. The formulation leads naturally to the incorporation of free boundaries which define the outer tumour surface explicitly and various inner surfaces implicitly. A combination of numerical simulations, asymptotic analysis and perturbation techniques is used to study the model and yields results, which agree well with experimentally-observed phenomena.
In this study, an assay has been developed for the simultaneous measurement of amphetamine class drugs from urine. T he method utilizes LC /MS and an online SPE system. T his combination of SPE sample preparation coupled with the analytical power of LC /MS is able to deliver an efficient assay for this commonly abused class of drug compounds. It was seen that urine contains a significant level of matrix interferences that cause ion suppression in the analysis of amphetamines. To optimize the sensitivity of methods for analyzing amphetamines using urine as a sample matrix, these interferences must be removed. T he use of the online SPE sample preparation in t he met hod was found to greatly reduce the matrix effects from urine, and allowed for measurement of amphetamines at significantly lower levels than simple urine dilute and shoot methods. T he reproducibility of sample analysis with online SPE was judged to be very good even when injecting samples onto different disposable online SPE ...

Bone is composed of a living protein framework upon which mineral crystals are placed. As bone breaks down, bits of this living protein framework appear in the urine. Tests of bone breakdown, called bone resorption tests, measure the amount of one specific bone protein in the urine (or in the blood) and thus gauge the current rate of bone breakdown. Urinary markers of bone breakdown (known as markers of bone resorption) are simple urine tests that can help determine if you are currently losing bone or not. Such bone breakdown testing can also indicate if your bone-building program is effective at reducing and normalizing the bone breakdown process.. As bone is broken down certain bone protein by-products are excreted in the urine. Measurement of the amount of these bone breakdown by-products can determine the rate of bone breakdown. A high rate of bone breakdown is strongly suggestive of current, ongoing bone loss and a greater risk for osteoporotic fracture. A low rate of bone resorption would ...
BACKGROUND: The counting of intraepithelial limphocytes (IELs) in the villous tips of architecturally normal small bowed biopsy specimens was proposed as a methoe to measure mucosal infiltration in glulten sensitive patients. AIMS: To apply this straightforward method in duodenal biopsy specimens from patients affected by potential coeliac disease (PCD) to verify whether it can discriminate these patients form controls. METHODS: Paraffin wax embedded duodenal sections from 11 patients affected by PCD were strained with an antihuman CD3 antibody. Sections from 19 patients affected by treated coeliac disease (TCD) and 17 patients in whom coeliac disease was excluded were stained with the same antibody to serve as controls. The slides were examined blindly. IELs/20 enterocytes in five randomly chosen villous tips were counted. Patients affected by PCD were all on a gluten containing diet. They had an architecturally normal duodenal mucosa and were positive for endomysial antibody. Both TCD and ...

Because tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) recognize tumor antigen associated with MHC class I molecules expressed on the tumor surface, any alteration in the tumor antigen processing and presentation will greatly affect CTL immunity. In fact, downregulation or complete loss of MHC I molecules have been demonstrated in a wide array of tumors, particularly prostate, colon, lung, and breast cancers (5-12). Disruption or downregulation of antigen processing components, such as TAP (transporters associated with antigen processing) and LMP (components of the proteasome complex) genes have also been observed in several tumor types, including breast, prostate, and renal cancers (13-15). Another tactic tumors exploit is downregulation or alteration of tumor antigens. Several independent research groups described the loss of melanoma-associated antigen either during treatment by adoptive transfer of ex vivo expanded antigen-specific CTL (16) or during immune therapy by tumor vaccinations ...
In 2000, Lipinksi B et al. presented a tumor coat theory. It is known that tumor cells can escape detection and attack by the immune system in most cancer patients. The tumor dons a coat of the hosts own protein on its cell surface. The coat is composed of fibrin and of a polymeric form of human serum albumin (HSA) which, by contrast to pure fibrin, is resistant to fibrinolytic degradation. Such a coated tumor appears as self to the immune system, and thus is not detected as a tumor by the immune system (i.e.. natural killer cells). When tumors are prepared for in vitro assays against drugs, they are routinely treated with proteolytic enzymes (e.g. pepsin, or chymotrypsin, etc.) which dissolve the protein coat, exposing the tumor cell surface to the drug. Thus, the in vivo existence of a coat on the tumor surface may explain why some drugs have little or no effect in vivo, while the same drugs are active in vitro. ...
But to a doctor, urine can provide even more information. One way for doctors to find out whats going on inside the body is to examine what flows out of it. So dont be surprised the next time a doctor asks for a urine sample for a seemingly non-urinary complaint.. In fact, be a little proud. When you hand over that little cup, youre participating in a medical tradition more than 6,000 years in the making. Urine luck. Todays urinalysis can reveal a great deal about a persons heath. But even simple urine color can tell people when to seek medical attention. Urine color may change due to something as innocuous as medications or foods, or as malevolent as an infection or cancer.. Urine that appears pink or red from the presence of blood is one cause for alarm.. If you see blood in the urine, even once, it requires you to see a doctor, said Marshall Stoller, a professor of urology at the University of California, San Francisco. It could be nothing, he said, but it could be an early sign of ...
Chlamydia is affecting our community greatly especially in 15-24 year olds. It is at a 50% infection rate with approx. 75% no symptom rate. Testing for STDs is easy and quick. Most can be tested for with a simple urine sample and many can be cleared by a simple dose of medication. It is important to remember that most people do not have symptoms of STDs but approximately 1 in 4 people have one. If STDs are left untreated they can cause more serious problems such as infertility and pelvic inflammitory disease. The best way to know if you have an STD is to GET TESTED. Partcipating in risk reduction such as condoms, lube, testing, monogamy, and more can greatly reduce your risk. Remember that condoms only protect some parts. Some STDs such as genital warts (HPV), and herpes (HSV) can be passed from skin to skin contact.. ...

Figure 1. Camelidae (Alpacas, Llamas and Camels) nanobodies have many advantages over mouse models due to their small size and specificity.. Instead of focusing on finding specific antigens on the tumor, these scientists actively aim at the tumor microenvironment. Nanobody CAR-T cells identify proteins in the tumor microenvironment, such as fibronectin EIIIB - which is found in neovascularization - immunosuppressive protein, and PD-L1 which is a known tumor surface marker for immunological checkpoint inhibition. In recent experiments, scientists treated both a melanoma mouse model, and melanoma and colon adenocarcinoma cell lines by using nanobody CAR-T. The results showed that nanobody CAR-T can significantly slow tumor growth and effectively kill tumor cells, improving animal survival without obvious side effects. The authors confirmed that the use of this CAR-T treatment that does not target the tumor itself may reduce the bodys excessive immune response. In addition, attacking the ECM ...

A cystourethrogram is done by a urologist or a radiologist. The doctor may be assisted by an X-ray technologist. You usually will not have to be admitted to the hospital. You will need to take off all or most of your clothes, and you will be given a cloth or paper covering to use during the test. You will be asked to urinate just before the test begins.. You will be asked to lie on your back on an X-ray table. Your genital area will be cleaned and draped with sterile towels. Men may be given a lead shield that covers their genitals to protect them from radiation. But womens ovaries cannot be shielded without blocking the view of the bladder. A catheter will be placed through your urethra and into your bladder. Contrast material will then slowly be injected through the catheter until your bladder is full. X-rays will be taken when you are standing up and sitting and lying down. The catheter is removed and more X-rays will be taken while you are urinating. You may be asked to stop urinating, ...
