Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum is a complex gastroenterological disease multifactorial in pathogenesis. One of the key components of non-specific inflammation in peptic ulcer disease is the activation of proteinases in the gastric mucosa and their interaction with proteinase inhibitors, which determines the degree of proteolytic aggression in terms of the development of destructive changes in the tissues that they damage.. The aim of the work was to study the effect of dry extract of cabbage garden on the components of the proteinase-inhibitor system in experimental gastric ulcer.. The effect of dry extract of cabbage garden on the local non-specific proteinase-inhibitory potential of the gastric mucosa was studied on the model of acute alcohol-prednisolone ulcers. Dry extract of cabbage garden at a dose of 50 mg/kg and comparison drugs - omeprazole and altan were administered intragastrically once a day for 7 days from the second day of the experiment. On the 8th day, elastase-like, ...

So I thought on this special day, I would resurrect my blog and write our adoption story whilst keeping the intricate details of that story private as those details belong to my son and are his details to share later in life should he choose to do so.. Our adoption story is one of the happiest stories of my life, but it didnt start out that way. At the beginning of 2007, as a single person in my mid 30s I decided to venture down the adoption route through Child Welfare. I was in the documentation process when I met the man who was to be my future husband. His request to me, despite my medical issues of fibroids, was that we try the conventional way first. In 2008 I underwent a myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids) in order to facilitate falling pregnant. 2 months after the procedure, we ceremoniously ditched all contraceptives in the house. In 2009 we got married. After a timeframe of 2 years with no pregnancy, we consulted a fertility clinic and I quit my job that required extensive ...
My hope was that the infrared sensors of Kinect were enough to record the objects geometries also in darkness, as actually happened. The problem was that probably RGBDemo, to work properly, needs also RGB values (from the normal camera). Without colors information the final 3D model is obviously black (as you can see below), but (and this is the real difficulty) it seems that the software loses a fundamental parameter to keep tracking the object to document, so that the operations become too slow and, in most cases, it is not possible to complete the recording of a whole scene. In other words the documentation process often stops, so that after it is necessary to start again or simply to save different partial scans of the scene, to reassemble at a later time ...

Method and apparatus for testing the operation of modules for use in a fault tolerant computing system that consists of two distinct computing zones. Diagnostic testing is performed when the system is powered on, the modules being subjected to module, zone and, if both zones are available, system diagnostic tests. Indications of faults detected during diagnostic testing are stored in an EEPROM on each module. Such fault indications can be cleared in the field by correcting the fault condition and successfully rerunning the diagnostic test during which the fault was detected. Indications of operating system detected faults are also stored in each module EEPROM. However, such fault indications are not field clearable.

Apparatus for making biomagnetic measurements includes a biomagnetometer for measuring magnetic fields produced by the body and an electromagnetic location measurement and recording system for automatically determining the location of the portion of the body from which the magnetic signals are being gathered. The electromagnetic location recording system permits establishing a real time body frame of reference with respect to the biomagnetometer, so that biomagnetic signals can be correlated directly with body location and structure. The electromagnetic location recording system may be operated continuously at radiation wavelengths which do not interfere with the taking of data, or intermittently with the taking of biomagnetic data, to avoid interference with the measured values of the biomagnetic data. The elements of the electromagnetic location recording system have substantially no residual magnetism when the location recording system is not operating, as the biomagnetic signals are typically so
In February 2015, the Board of Directors was held during the 11th Japanese Gastroenterological Association (JGA) and I was elected to be the fourth Chairperson. Generational change in the Board of Directors has furthered and many directors who made efforts to establish this association retired. Elected under such circumstance, honestly speaking, I am very concerned for operation of the association regarding how and in which direction I should advance. I am sure that I will be discussing in great deal with my predecessors, Dr. Makoto Ito, Dr. Akira Terano, Dr. Choitsu Sakamoto. Fortunately, Dr. Hideyuki Hiraishi, President of the 12th Annual Meeting of the JGA which will be held while I am appointed for the Chairperson, Dr. Takashi Joh, President of the 13th Annual Meeting of the JGA, and Dr. Hidemi Goto, Chairperson of the JGA Educational Seminar are all of the same generation with me and we know each other very well. In addition, Dr. Toshiyuki Matsui, Chairperson of the JGA Educational Seminar ...
As many as 91 children with different gastroenterological diseases were examined. 57.8% of the children manifested the duodenogastric reflux. Acid-forming function of the stomach appeared normal or elevated. Electrogastrography showed the predominance of the hyperkinetic and normokinetic curve types. Manometry of the stomach and duodenum often demonstrated duodenal hypertension with a reflux of the duodenal contents to the stomach. The incidence of the duodenogastric reflux was not dependent on the patients age, sex or disease standing. Alterations in the gastric and duodenal mucosa may be both the cause and consequence of the gastroduodenal reflux.
The dietary preferences can enhance or reduce negative consequences of tobacco smoking. Thus, the smoking behavior and dietary habits of 99 patients treated against pulmonary, cardiological and gastroenterological diseases in specialist outpatient clinics in Rzeszów were analyzed. The survey questionnaire examined the relation between tobacco smoking and dietary preferences (quantity and regularity of food intake, and frequency of consumption of several foodstuffs) as well as health effects of smoking. Among the respondents, 48% were currently smoking (smokers), 16% declared themselves as formerly smoking ex-smokers) and 35% did not smoke (non-smokers). The cardiovascular and respiratory health problems were more common in smokers group, but the differences were not significant (p,0.05). Smokers diet was low in healthy kind of food (i.e. vegetables, fruit, dairy product, antioxidative spices) and simultaneously was abundant in meat, strong coffee and alcohol (p,0.05) compared to non-smokers. ...

An inexpensive system for earlier disease diagnosis could save innumerable lives. It would also have a profound impact on the nations healthcare industry, currently buckling under the strain of spiraling costs.. Now Dr. Bart Legutki, a researcher at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University has pioneered a method for profiling the immune system, using clues provided by antibody activity to track an individuals state of health. The work was done in collaboration with Dr. Stephen Albert Johnston, director of the Institutes Center for Innovations in Medicine.. The new technique, known as immunosignaturing, could provide rapid, pre-symptomatic diagnosis for a broad range of ailments, from infectious diseases to chronic afflictions to varied forms of cancer, offering the best hope for successful treatment. Immunosignaturing also shows potential as a low-cost alternative for vaccine evaluation, currently a lengthy and expensive undertaking. As Legutki explains, the immune system is ...

Your treatments gave me the first complete relief from pain that I have had in longer than I can remember. It may be eight years since I first started having pain from Lyme disease and three of its co-infections. I have been on steroids at three times the normal dose for years and have taken, periodically, narcotic pain medication, so long that I now have a tolerance to it. The magnets took all the pain out of my body after the second treatment; that pain was in my entire body from my teeth to the tops of my feet. I could feel that pain deep in my body, as if it was radiating from my bones. It was gone after I got off the table at that second treatment. If you do not return soon, I will be in California to get more treatment from you as soon as I can. The long term, severe pain which I have endured had never really been helped by any medication and, having to ...

Dyspepsia (pain or discomfort centered in the upper abdomen) affects up to one third of the population. Patients with uninvestigated dyspepsia who consult physicians may have a serious underlying disease (e.g., gastric cancer) or may occasionally develop complications (e.g., bleeding from an ulcer), but a large proportion have no structural explanation for their symptoms and are diagnosed as having nonulcer (or functional) dyspepsia (NUD) (1). Traditionally, management of the patient with recent-onset dyspepsia has involved prescribing empirical therapy, such as an H2-blocker, or arranging for appropriate investigations, such as endoscopy, to rule out structural disease. The American College of Physicians (2) issued guidelines in 1985 recommending that in patients without alarm features, initial empirical therapy was desirable and cost-effective. The excellent randomized controlled trial by Bytzer and colleagues calls this policy into question. This is the first study to objectively test the ...

The Model 2040 Dual-Axis Tomography Holder is for TEM imaging or analysis that requires in situ specimen rotation. Acquiring a dual-axis tilt series enhances the information contained in the tomogram.. The Dual-Axis Tomography Holder features an optimal tilt angle range in narrow gap (~5mm) pole piece geometries, while maintaining microscope resolution.. A fully jeweled mechanism provides ultra-precise, in-plane specimen rotation, while maintaining eucentricity.. The FlexiClamp is a spring-type, annular ring which securely clamps the specimen into the specimen cup. It maximizes specimen visibility, even at high tilt angles. A dedicated tool facilitates the use of the FlexiClamp.. Initially, the specimen can be fully rotated through 360º to orient either the grid bars or a specimen feature to the alpha tilt axis. Once the specimen is properly oriented, the first tilt series is acquired. A two-position precision indexing mechanism provides 90º in-plane rotation. These features greatly facilitate ...

is a constant called the pyromagnetic coefficient. In this investigation the model used is that of Walters liquid B fluid, which includes the effect of fluid visco-elasticity. By introducing appropriate nondimensional variables, the problem is reduced to solving a coupled nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations subject to a set of boundary conditions. The problem is solved by developing a suitable numerical technique based on finite difference approach. Computational results concerning the variation in the velocity, pressure and temperature fields, skin friction and the rate of heat transfer with magnetic field strength, Prandtl number, and blood visco-elasticity are presented graphically. The results presented reveal that the velocity of blood in the normal physiological state can be lowered by applying a magnetic field of sufficient intensity. The study bears the promise of important applications in controlling the flow of blood during surgery and also during treatment of cancer ...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diagnosis of liver fibrosis by transient elastography (Fibroscan) is a new and non-invasive method. We report its results, and compare them with the non-invasive biological tests. RESULTS: Fibroscan is validated for chronic hepatitis C, allowing to diagnose the fibrosis (Metavir) F2, F3 and F4 with areas under the ROC curve of 0.79-0.83, 0.90-0.91 and 0.91-0.97 respectively. The non-invasive diagnosis of the cirrhosis can be made with positive and negative predictive values from 70 to 95% and 77 in 95%. Preliminary data concern the HCV-HIV co-infections, primary biliary cirrhosis, NASH, portal hypertension, and the follow-up of the hepatic fibrosis. These results are altogether comparable to the various non-invasive biological tests, for cirrhosis diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Its remain to determine the respective places of Fibroscan and non-invasive biological tests, in the liver fibrosis diagnosis. ...
Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine3). A case of peripheral neuropathy due to vitamin B1 deficiency developed 6 months after pylorus-preserving subtotal gastrectomy is reported. Pylorus-preserving total gastrectomy and reconstruction by jejunal pouch interposition with fundoplication was performed for gastric cancer in a 32-yera-old man. He had a balanced diet and no alcohol postoperatively. Abdominal computed tomography 3 months after operation revealed marked dilatation of the interposed jejunum. The quantity of daily oral intake had been sufficient since 4 months after operation; however, the patient complained of dysesthesia and muscle weakness in the distal parts of the lower extremities 6 months after operation. The sensory action potential of the sural nerve was not evoked during electrophysiologic examination. The blood level of vitamin B1was decreased as 11 ng/ml (normal range: 20-50). Symptoms gradually improved following vitamin B1 administration. Caution should be paid to ...
ALVAREZ, Daniel et al. Usefulness of transient elastography (Fibroscan®) in the assessment of fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease. Medicina (B. Aires) [online]. 2012, vol.72, n.1, pp. 10-14. ISSN 0025-7680.. The prognosis and management of chronic liver disease largely depends on the extent and progression of liver fibrosis. Unfortunately, liver biopsy, an invasive and painful technique with several limitations, continues to be the gold standard for the staging and grading of fibrosis. Therefore, accurate noninvasive tests for liver injury are urgently needed. During the last years, transient elastography (Fibroscan®) has been proposed for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease, by measuring liver stiffness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness, objectivity and safety of this technique. We included 68 patients who underwent a liver biopsy in the last 18 months with a wide spectrum of chronic liver diseases. All procedures as ...

Many Americans suffer from symptoms of indigestion. Unfortunately, the older you get, the higher the likelihood youll suffer from it. Symptoms may include stomach pain, discomfort, bloating and burping after meals. Digestive issues may also result in developing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux. This occurs when acid or other stomach contents back up into the esophagus. The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn, which can greatly reduce your quality of life. It affects daily activities, sleep and what you can and cant eat. In fact, about seven million people in the U.S. have some symptoms of GERD according to the American Gastroenterological Association ...
Source: American Gastroenterological Association. In a study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the researchers reviewed survey results from 1,587 individuals with IBS-D and 1,667 with IBS-C. The average age of the patients was 47 years, 81% were female, and 90% were white.. Approximately 84% of patients with IBS-C and 93% of those with IBS-D reported abdominal pain, the most common symptom in both groups. Overall, 36% of the 1,885 patients employed or in school reported decreased productivity in those settings.. IBS-C patients were significantly more likely to report that their symptoms caused them to avoid sex, feel self-conscious about their bodies, have trouble concentrating, and feel "not like myself," compared with IBS-D patients (P less than .004 for all).. IBS-D patients were significantly more likely to report that their symptoms caused them to avoid traveling in general, avoid places without bathrooms, avoid leaving the house, and have trouble making plans, compared ...

The treatment of ascites in liver cirrhosis is typically performed by different medical specialists. However, professionals other than gastroenterologists and hepatologists can also perform the treatment procedures, including gastroenterological surgeons, nephrologists and infectologists. Different medical doctors follow these patients depending on their degree of familiarity with ascites treatment, and they play a key role in the ultimate goal of therapy. However, many professionals do not follow any established treatment protocol, which may lead to the emergence of several complications, such as HE and renal dysfunction, which are the most frequent complications 7.. Because many physicians note difficulties in managing massive ascites, we aimed to introduce a protocol that identifies outpatient cirrhotic patients with ascites that is considered difficult to manage (due to cirrhosis decompensation). The patients were followed-up with nutritional assessments to verify their adherence to the diet ...

The nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) effect has prolific applications ranging from precision mapping of Earths magnetic field to biomagnetic sensing. Studies on collisional spin relaxation effects have led to ultrahigh magnetic field sensitivities using a single-beam Λ scheme with state-of-the-art magnetic shielding/compensation techniques. However, the NMOR effect in this widely used single-beam Λ scheme is peculiarly small, requiring complex radio-frequency phase-locking protocols. We show the presence of a previously unknown energy symmetry-based nonlinear propagation blockade and demonstrate an optical inelastic wave-mixing NMOR technique that breaks this NMOR blockade, resulting in an NMOR optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement of more than two orders of magnitude never before seen with the single-beam Λ scheme ...
BioMagnetic Solutions has engineered next generation ferrofluids (nano-magnetic liquids) with enhanced magnetics for selective recovery and/or enrichment of cells expressing specific surface antigens or for capturing macromolecules. The augmented magnetic character of our materials increases their magnetic pull which lowers limits of detection and saves time (in concert with our more powerful quadrupole and hexapole magnets) enabling researchers to work more efficiently.. ...
ID-TE regenerator (Hexagram display) is a multifunctional device designed on the basis of the Book of Changes (I-Ching). The device creates interaction with biological systems (organisms) and biomagnetic fields of living organisms, and ensures their regeneration and vitalization. ID-TE regenerator generates magnetic fields, but unlike classical magnet therapy equipment, does not use local exposure, but rather magnetic induction as a source of signal energy that is sent into the organism (bloodstream, nervous system, acupuncture meridians and points Qi).
One of the most requested product lines which are supplied by us here at Test Equipment are Test & Tag Machines, otherwise known as PAT Testers (PAT is an abbreviation of Portable Appliance Test). All of these machines are capable of undertaking different tests, all to the relevant Australian Standards. The only thing that tends to differ as you go up the range (apart from price) is the functionality of each unit.. For example, the entry level units are capable of performing insulation tests, earth continuity tests and current leakage tests in one handy unit, some units can also test RCD trip swithces for correct operation, and some units have a built in memory to allow the user to save the results for downloading to a PC, eliminating the requirement to manually complete a log book. The higher level units are fully automated and allow tags to be printed on site and fully manage client assets.. Read More ...

ABSTRACT. Background and Aim: Hepatic focal lesions differ in their tissue composition and in the degree of stiffness, so our aim was to evaluate the role of Ultrasonic Transient Elastography (Fibroscan) in the measurement of hepatic focal lesions stiffness in order to differentiate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) focal lesions from other non HCC focal lesions. Methods: The study was conducted on 34 patients with hepatic focal lesion(s) in the right lobe located near the liver surface and more than or equal 4 cm in diameter, detected by imaging studies and diagnosed by CT and histopathology. Stiffness over the focal lesions was measured by the fibroscan. Results: The median value of stiffness was 72.5 kPa over HCC focal lesions, 17.2 kPa over lymphoma focal lesions, 6.5 kPa over metastatic focal lesions and 10.5 kPa over the sarcoidosis focal lesion. Conclusions: Hepatocellular carcinoma focal lesions are much stiffer than lymphoma, metastasis or sarcoidosis focal lesions. Fibroscan may be a ...

Nearly 50 million Americans experience nighttime heartburn at least once a week, negatively affecting sleep and impacting work performance, according to a recent survey of 1,000 heartburn sufferers by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). Heartburn is a condition that occurs when stomach acids rise into the esophagus and produce a pain in the chest, know as reflux. The symptoms for nighttime heartburn are identical to daytime heartburn, with the exception of keeping sufferers from either falling asleep or staying asleep.. In the survey, 65 percent of respondents reported experiencing both daytime and nighttime heartburn, with 40 percent admitting that their inability to sleep due to nighttime heartburn affected their work performance. While 70 percent of respondents reported taking medication to control their nighttime heartburn, 45 percent noted that their medication didnt relieve all of their nighttime symptoms.. The AGA suggests nighttime heartburn sufferers to make changes in ...

Continuing part two of our mini-series on colorectal cancer, today we move from the big scale Immunoscore study to small subsets of disease that are looking interesting in several ways.. For years, advanced colorectal cancer has been dominated by chemotherapy (FOLFOX or FOLFIRI) with and without targeted therapies (VEGF and EGFR antibodies), with very little new to talk about. Part of the challenge here is how do you add something the existing standard of care and move the needle significantly. In front-line, for example, the OS is already out 2-plus years, so these are long and risky trials to undertake. Not surpisingly, many companies have sought to evaluate their agents in tumour types where they consider the risk of development to be lower.. Unless… we can find creative approaches that turn the paradigm on its head and identify a clearly defined niche that can be carved out separately from allcomers.. This is where were at now - identifying subsets that might respond exquisitely to novel ...
Although healthcare quality and patient safety have longstanding international attention, the target of reducing diagnostic errors has only recently gained prominence, even though numerous patients, families and professional caregivers have suffered from diagnostic mishaps for a long time. Similarly, patients have always been involved in their own care to some extent, but only recently have patients sought more opportunities for engagement and participation in healthcare improvements. This paper brings these two promising trends together, analyzing strategies for patient involvement in reducing diagnostic errors in an individuals own care, in improving the healthcare delivery systems diagnostic safety, and in contributing to research and policy development on diagnosis-related issues. ...

Background: Transient elastography (FibroScan) is a new, non-invasive, rapid, and reproducible method allowing evaluation of liver fibrosis by measurement of liver stiffness. In cirrhotic patients, liver stiffness measurements range from 12.5 to 75.5 kPa. However, the clinical relevance of these values is unknown. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the accuracy of liver stiffness measurement for the detection of cirrhosis in patients with chronic liver disease.. Methods: A total of 711 patients with chronic liver disease were studied. Aetiologies of chronic liver diseases were hepatitis C virus or hepatitis B virus infection, alcohol, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, other, or a combination of the above aetiologies. Liver fibrosis was evaluated according to the METAVIR score.. Results: Stiffness was significantly correlated with fibrosis stage (r = 0.73, p,0.0001). Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (95% confidence interval) were 0.80 (0.75-0.84) for patients ...
