Maintaining the quality of clinical specimens for tuberculosis (TB) testing is a major challenge in many high TB burden-limited resources countries. Sample referral systems in low and middle income countries are often weak and the maintenance of the cold-chain challenging and very costly for TB programs. The development of transport media allowing the preservation of samples without refrigeration is critical for increasing access to TB diagnostic services and for reducing the costs related to testing. We evaluated the performance of OMNIgene-SPUTUM (OM-S) reagent for the maintenance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) viability in sputum samples in the absence of refrigeration and its capacity to stabilize nucleic acid for molecular testing. A total of 329 sputum specimens from presumptive TB cases collected at the National Reference Laboratory in Tirana, Albania, were either decontaminated by a conventional method or processed with OM-S reagent and stored at room temperature. Samples in OM-S were

The epidemiology of syphilis in the United Kingdom has undergone significant changes recently.30 Localised outbreaks have resulted in many patients presenting with ulcerative lesions suitable for direct detection of T pallidum by PCR, in sites where DGM cannot be used (mainly oral lesions). In response to the changing epidemiology of syphilis, we have offered a T pallidum specific PCR assay as a trial diagnostic service. Over the 19 month period of this study, swabs from 117 patients were submitted for syphilis PCR, indicating that a demand for the service existed, at least in some areas where syphilis was prevalent (principally Manchester and London).. Data presented in table 1 demonstrate that for the majority of cases the PCR results correlate well with the serology obtained; 18/19 primary and 8/10 secondary cases of syphilis were detected by PCR. Two HIV positive patients were positive by PCR more than 1 week before treponemal seroconversion.. The PCR successfully detected T pallidum from ...
The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine residency in clinical pathology is a three year program designed to provide post-DVM training in veterinary cytology, hematology, and clinical chemistry. Additionally, trainees are strongly encouraged to pursue a PhD or MS degree. The resident will participate in diagnostic service and the veterinary medicine instructional program on a full-time basis under the direction of two ACVP board-certified clinical pathologists. Time will be scheduled for tutorial instruction, rounds, seminars, guided self-study and participation in research projects. Enrollment in up to eight credit hours of graduate academic studies per semester will be scheduled. Each year the appointment will be reviewed, with reappointment contingent upon satisfactory completion of the previous years program. In recent years, as long as the rapid development of aquaculture, the occurrence of aquatic animal diseases increase year by year, which restrict the sustained, steady, and healthy development of aquaculture. So the rapid diagnosis of aquatic animal disease is particularly important for their prevention and control. In the present work, an Android-based aquatic animal disease diagnostic system has been developed in order to provide more convenient and effective aquatic animal disease diagnostic services to ordinary farmers. The designed system includes the part of the man-machine interface (user interface, expert interface), inference engine, the case base, knowledge base and so on. Interactive interface is a visual display interface. Inference engine was written in the Java programming language. Case base and knowledge base were created using SQLite. The results show that ordinary farmers can easily use this system to realize the convenient, fast, and accurate access to the findings of disease

Handbook of Clinical Neurophysiology : The Guidelines volume is not meant to be a comprehensive treatise, but rather to address the most commonly used techniques in the field. Indeed, many of the newest and most interesting topics cannot be covered in a volume of this brevity. More complete coverage of the scientific basis of clinical neurophysiology and of the diseases and disorders seen commonly by clinical neurophysiologists can be found in the Handbook Series (Handbook of Clinical Neurophysiology series editors Jasper R. Daube and François Mauguière, published by Elsevier under the auspices of the IFCN between 2003 and 2010). This series of books represents the ultimate reference source for academic clinical neurophysiologists. Nine volumes have been published to date, each edited by an expert chosen by the Series Editors and the Executive Committee of IFCN, and include chapters covering all relevant covering: Movement Disorders, Clinical Neurophysiology of Disorders of Muscle and ...
