Occupational Dermatitis can be defined as an inflammation of the skin caused by the working environment or by skin contact with a damaging substance.. The symptoms and seriousness of the condition vary widely. Symptoms usually begin with redness and irritation, and occasionally, swelling. Blisters may follow and, if these break, the skin may become infected.. Contact with some substances can cause small areas of the skin to thicken, eventually forming rough wart-like growths which may become cancerous.. Any part of the body may be affected. Dermatitis is not contagious, but if untreated it may spread to other parts of the body. Correct treatment at an early stage is essential.. By taking the right preventative steps to minimise contact with damaging agents and adopting an appropriate skin safety regime, the risk of occupational dermatitis can be reduced.. ...

We?re going to talk about Occupational Skin Disease, which we will call OSD. OSD is any abnormality of the skin that is either caused by, or aggravated by, the work we do. It is one of the most common health problems in the workplace. OSD accounts for nearly 10% of all days lost from work-related causes. (The highest, at 30%, is from muscle and bone problems.). OSD can be difficult to diagnose because there are so many causes of skin abnormalities. Infectious conditions, such as measles, can be passed from one person to another. OSD is not infectious so it can?t be caught or passed on.
Occupational skin disease (OSD) is the most common non trauma-related occupational illness and has a significant impact on food safety.
It is estimated that more than 13 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin. Dermal exposure to hazardous agents can result in a variety of occupational diseases and disorders, including occupational skin diseases (OSD) and systemic toxicity. Historically, efforts to control workplace exposures to hazardous agents have focused on inhalation rather than skin exposures. As a result, assessment strategies and methods are well developed for evaluating inhalation exposures in the workplace; standardized methods are currently lacking for measuring and assessing skin exposures.

Health experts estimate that allergic and irritant contact dermatitis are on the rise in the workplace. The most recent Safe Work Australia paper (March 2012), which summarises two new reports on chemical exposure and dermatitis, and a report on wet work released in 2011, says there were 10,730 workers compensation claims for occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) and similar conditions in Australia in the nine years to 2009. Of these, 3760 involved absences from work of one week or more, and, in 2008/09, a typical payment for a serious claim was about $3000. But the paper says this data is likely to underestimate the problem. (Australian workers dermal exposures to wet work and chemicals and the causes and characteristics of occupational skin disease: A summary of the findings and policy implications of three research reports [pdf] ). Further, Canadian researchers found in a June 2009 study that cleaners who develop dermatitis are more likely than those who dont to develop work-related ...

Objectives: The ability to measure temporal trends in disease incidence is important, but valid methods are needed. This study investigates UK trends during 1996-2005 in work-related skin and respiratory diseases including non-malignant pleural disease, asthma, mesothelioma and pneumoconiosis and the potential for bias when using surveillance systems for this purpose.. Methods: The volunteer reporters in three surveillance schemes were specialist physicians for skin diseases, specialist physicians for respiratory diseases and occupational physicians, respectively, who provided monthly reports of new cases of disease which they considered work related. Poisson regression models were used to investigate variation by calendar year (trend), season and reporter characteristics. Separately, temporal patterns in the probabilities of non-response and zero reports were investigated. Annual changes in disease incidences were compared between reporter groups.. Results: There was little evidence of change ...
Occupational skin diseases are ranked among the top five occupational diseases in many countries.[2] Occupational skin diseases and conditions are generally caused by chemicals and having wet hands for long periods while at work. Eczema is by far the most common, but urticaria, sunburn and skin cancer are also of concern.[3] Contact dermatitis due to irritation is inflammation of the skin which results from a contact with an irritant.[4] It has been observed that this type of dermatitis does not require prior sensitization of the immune system. There have been studies to support that past or present atopic dermatitis is a risk factor for this type of dermatitis.[5] Common irritants include detergents, acids, alkalies, oils, organic solvents and reducing agents.[6] The acute form of this dermatitis develops on exposure of the skin to a strong irritant or caustic chemical. This exposure can occur as a result of accident at a workplace. The irritant reaction starts to increase in its intensity ...

Background Occupational exposure to skin irritants, in particular to water, is an important risk factor for hand eczema. Objectives To assess occupational skin exposure to water in the general population. Methods As part of a public health survey in Stockholm, Sweden, 18 267 gainfully employed individuals aged 18-64 years completed a questionnaire with previously validated questions regarding occupational skin exposure to water. Results Altogether 16% reported exposure to water for (1/2) h or more a day, and 13% reported exposure to water more than 10 times a day. Furthermore, 7% reported water exposure of more than 2 h and 6% of more than 20 times a day. Women reported more water exposure than men and many female-dominated occupations were seen to comprise water exposure. Women were also more exposed than men within the same jobs. Young adults were more exposed than older. A total of 18% were employed in high-risk occupations for hand eczema. Fifty-nine per cent of individuals employed in ...

N2 - Background: Contact dermatitis (CD) is an inflammatory skin condition induced by direct contact with a specific chemical. Irritant CD (ICD) is a nonspecific inflammatory cutaneous reaction to an irritating agent. Allergic CD (ACD) is an immune-mediated antigen-specific skin reaction to an allergenic chemical. Objectives and methods: The biomedical literature (human, basic science, veterinary) was reviewed to evaluate the current state of knowledge regarding CD. Results: The incidence of human CD remains unclear, but represents up to 90-95% of all occupational skin diseases. The prevalence of CD has not been established in veterinary medicine. The pathogenesis of CD is not fully understood, but involves a complex cascade of events between resident skin cells, relocated immune cells, pro-inflammatory ...
What is the role of health surveillance?. Health surveillance is used to detect the early onset or symptoms of dermatitis. The earlier a skin condition is discovered the better the prognosis. It is deemed to be secondary prevention and not as effective as the primary prevention measures outlined above. Health surveillance where used, has to be used in conjunction with these other control measures. Health surveillance can help to show that workplace control measures are working.. Pre-Employment Medical. A pre employment health questionnaire should be completed by all those going to work with substances which can cause dermatitis. There may be limitations in employing a person who currently suffers from dermatitis.. A health assessment is usually aimed at identifying an effect of work on health, in this case skin. It may be required before a worker commences work, especially for people with a previous known sensitivity to an irritant or sensitiser used in the workplace. People with pre existing ...
Healthcare workers (HCWs) can be considered at an increased risk of developing occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) due to repetitive hand washing with soaps and disinfectants and extended use of gloves for many hours during the day. The aim of this study was to summarize the incidence of OCD in HCWs. Contact dermatitis refers to skin rashes resulting from contact with certain substances. There are two types of contact dermatitis: allergic (resulting from a reaction to some allergen, such as poison ivy or nickel), and irritant (resulting from direct irritation to a substance, such as detergents and bleach). Some chemicals can act as both allergen and irritant (wet cement, for example). Other substances cause a problem after sunlight exposure, bringing on a phototoxic dermatitis. About three quarters of cases of contact eczema are of the irritant type, which is the most common occupational skin disease. Contact dermatitis is curable, provided the offending substance can be avoided. If Dr. Popkin suspects a contact dermatitis, she may recommend patch testing to determine the specific substance that may be causing your rash.. ...

Although hand dermatitis is known to affect nursing students worldwide, the prevalence among their Australian counterparts has not been elucidated and the relative contribution of tropical environments is unclear. Therefore, we conducted the first investigation of hand dermatitis among 232 female, undergraduate nurses in tropical Australia using a previously validated methodology. Hand dermatitis prevalence rose from 10.8% in the first year to 27.4% by the third year and averaged 18.5% across all three grades. Pre-existing atopic dermatitis caused a 7.8-fold risk increase during logistic regression analysis (odds ratio [OR] 7.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.0-21.1, P , 0.0001). Overall, this study suggests that hand dermatitis is less common among tropical Australian nursing students than their counterparts around the world. The identification of atopic dermatitis as a hand dermatitis risk factor was, however, consistent with previous research conducted in non-tropical areas.. ...
Background: Contact dermatitis is common disease and represents a significant problem in healthcare sector, mainly among nurses. Many studies reported the prevalence of contact dermatitis from different parts of the world. Nevertheless, data about its frequency in Tunisia especially in public hospital seems to be insufficient. This study aims to assess the prevalence of contact dermatitis among nurses working in public hospital and identify risk factors. Patient and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among a representative sample of 1278 health professionals working in a public hospital matched by professional status and department. The survey was based on a questionnaire, a specialized examination and patch tests. Results: The prevalence of occupational contact dermatitis was 22% (17.5 - 27.2). The worker profile at risk of contact dermatitis was a female nurse aged 37 years working in a surgical department during 12.7 ± 9.36 years. Hands were damaged in 92.4% of cases and rhythmicity with

BACKGROUND: Trichloroethylene (TCE) is used extensively as an industrial solvent and has been recognized as one of the major environmental pollutants. To date, > 200 cases of TCE-induced hypersensitivity dermatitis among exposed workers have been reported worldwide, and TCE exposure has become one of the critical occupational health issues in Asia. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to identify genetic susceptible biomarkers associated with the TCE-induced hypersensitivity dermatitis in genes located in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region. METHODS: From 1998 to 2006, 121 cases with TCE-induced hypersensitivity dermatitis and 142 tolerant controls were recruited into the population-based case-control study. We determined HLA alleles B, DRB1, DQA1, and DQB1, by sequence-based typing. p-Values were corrected for comparisons of multiple HLA alleles. In addition, we compared and analyzed the structure character of amino acid residues of HLA molecules found in participants. RESULTS: We obtained complete ...
