Functional agglomerated speckles, for incorporation in dentifrices, include agglomerates of a water insoluble powdered functional material and a mixture of a water insoluble, ethanol soluble ethyl cellulose binder and a suitable water soluble binder, such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Such speckles, while more soluble or disintegrable in a flavored dentifrice than those based on ethyl cellulose binders without PVP, still can satisfactorily maintain their integrity and identity during processing of the dentifrice after addition of the speckles to the main dentifrice body, but on storage, after packaging of the dentifrice in dispensing tubes, they will soften sufficiently so as then to be essentially impalpable to one utilizing the dentifrice in brushing his teeth. Despite such softening the speckles continue to maintain their identity as separate small bodies in the dentifrice. The invented speckles are especially useful in translucent or transparent gel dentifrices, which contain components, such as
Dentifrice speckles of substantially uniform shape and size are made by agitating the material of such speckles (binder plus dentifrice component) in a liquid dispersing medium at temperature at which the binder is liquid but undissolved and unemulsified in the dispersing medium, and cooling the dispersion to a temperature below the solidification point of the speckling material so as to solidify it into speckles of desired size. Such speckles may be separated from the dispersing medium or may remain in it and be utilized with it. Preferably the speckles are incorporated in dentifrices and contain dentifrice components desirably maintained separate from the rest of the dentifrice. Also included within the invention described are the speckles and dentifrices containing them.
Objective: To formulate a stable and efficacious peroxide dentifrice. Method: Hydrogen peroxide stability - The dentifrice was aged in tube at two months 40 ºC. After aging, the dentifrice was analyzed for active oxygen by a validated analytical method. In-vitro whitening efficacy - Artificially stained bovine teeth were polished with prophylaxis paste until initial L*, a*, and b* values approached those of human teeth. The teeth were brushed for two minutes with a dentifrice slurry, rinsed with water, and L*, a*, and b* values were collected with a spectrophotometer. This process was repeated a total of 14 times to model one week of brushing. A whiteness index, ΔW* (where W*=((L*-100)2+a*2+b*2)1/2), was reported after 14 brushing treatments. Analysis of variance was used to compare the mean ΔW* value for each product with p,0.05 indicating significant differences between products. Result: Colgate® Optic WhiteTM, a dentifrice with 1% hydrogen peroxide, was formulated using a non-aqueous ...

A dentifrice composition containing minor amounts of relatively small particle size high cleaning abrasives, without oral care actives. The dentifrice may be encapsulated and optionally, positioned on the head of a toothbrush. Use of the dentifrice provides a small amount of high cleaning abrasive to the teeth, and has stain removal efficacy. In one aspect, a dentifrice composition comprising an orally acceptable carrier and 1 to 10 wt % abrasive, such that the total amount of abrasive delivered per application is 2 mg to 8 mg, the abrasive having a weight mean particle size in the range of 3 to 7 μm, with at least 90% of the particles by weight having a size below 16 μm, and wherein the composition does not contain an oral care active.
Monofluorophosphate salts, especially sodium monofluorophosphate (Na 2 PO 3 F), when added to various industrial water systems in concentrations between 0.1 mg/L and 50 mg/L, significantly reduce the amount of calcium carbonate scale which is formed on heat exchange and other metallic surfaces of such systems. Monofluorophosphate salts, especially sodium monofluorophosphate, when added to various water systems in concentrations between 0.1 mg/L and 50 mg/L also stabilizes soluble manganese ion and its reaction products, i.e., primarily MnO 2 , in desirable forms and reduced particle sizes. Monofluorophosphate salts, especially sodium monofluorophosphate, when added to various water systems in concentrations between 1 mg/L and 500 mg/L also stabilizes soluble iron ion and its reaction products, i.e., primarily Fe 2 O 3 .
The results of these three studies show that dentifrices containing 1.5% arginine, an insoluble calcium compound, and fluoride have a significantly improved ability to promote remineralization and prevent demineralization of enamel relative to dentifrices containing the same level of fluoride alone. …

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a very common complaint that occurs in the general population. The intensity of the pain can be minor to very serious, which may prevent one from eating or performing ordinary oral hygiene practices. The most accepted mechanism by which DH occurs is hydrodynamic theory, which suggests that pain-producing stimuli cause rapid movement of fluid within the dentin tubules, as a result the free nerve endings, at the inner ends of the tubules or the periphery of the pulp, are excited and DH occurs. According to this theory, one approach to treat DH is reducing dentin tubule fluid movement through occluding open tubules. Strontium chloride was the first tubule-blocking ingredient used in dentifrice about fifty years ago and since that time a paucity of clinical studies have been carried out to test its effectiveness on DH. The other approach is to reduce the pulp nerve excitability by depolarizing the nerve endings, in which the most widely used material is potassium ...

Triclosan is a broad-spectrum antibacterial commonly used in cosmetics, dentifrices, and other consumer products. The compounds widespread use in consumer products and its detection in breast milk, urine, and serum have raised concerns regarding its potential association with various human health outcomes. Recent evidence suggests that triclosan may play a role in cancer development, perhaps through its estrogenicity or ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis. Our aims here are to review studies of human exposure levels, to evaluate the results of studies examining the effects of triclosan on cancer development, and to suggest possible directions for future research.
