Temporary restorations often look almost as good as the final restoration. We want the patients to look at the temporary and say, "Wow! This looks great and feels great." The final restoration will be better. but we need to work this all out in the temporary stage. Because temporary restorations look so good, patients sometimes delay getting a final crown or final bridge on their implants. The problem with that scenario is that bacteria can leak under the temporary restoration and that may affect the health of the implant in the long run. There is a set amount of time that a temporary restoration is designed to last, and people should not go beyond that timeframe. Typically six months is the longest amount of time that I would recommend that a patient keep a temporary restoration. They need to return to the office in a timely manner and get their new, permanent teeth.. Dr. Alan H. Farber. Periodontist. Offices in Hauppauge and Medford, NY. When you combine the computer advances with the advances in materials science you get the CEREC®. It is for larger restorations (where a resin filling might not be strong enough to hold the tooth together safely). Dont worry, if you just have to do it the old fashioned way, some teeth are still appropriately restored with gold or porcelain caps (dentists call them "crowns" because they sound more elegant!). Of course, the old fashioned way is using messy impression trays, casting up a plaster model (that you never saw), putting in a temporary restoration while we wait a few days for the crown to be made at the dental lab, prying off the temporary restoration, and then finally seating the finished crown.. The modern solution employs the CEREC and it is so cool that even my video game enthralled children sometimes stop by the office just to watch it work. It is a Computer Assisted Design/Computer Assisted Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system that allows me to make 3-D images to record the dimensions ...

Authors: Ons Zouiten, Hadi Antoun. Abstract:. Immediate extraction implantation is a technique which has been used and approved with a clinical track record. Loading immediately after the implant is put in place is provided by a provisional crown. In the anterior sector, this approach has several advantages: on one hand, it provides the patient with significant aesthetic comfort and psychological ease, and on the other hand, on a morphological level, it helps to control the peri-implant mucosa healing process and maturation by preparing the site for pleasant and stable aesthetic outcomes over time.. In this clinical case, the stages of replacement of a central incisor presenting inflamed periradicular lesions of endodontic origin and bone fenestration (vestibular) will be described. The stages of extraction and immediate implantation associated with guided bone regeneration, connective tissue grafts and the placement of a immediate provisional crown have also been extensively described.. Key ...

You may need to wear your temporaries for just a few days or for several months depending on the type of dental reconstruction you are undergoing. Temporaries formed in place of crowns or veneers may only need to be worn for a few days to a few weeks, whereas dental implant and full-mouth reconstruction patients will need to wear provisional restorations for several months while the gums heal and the implants fuse with surrounding bone. Keep in mind that provisional restorations are less durable than permanent ones and are placed using provisional cement. Because it is possible for them to shift or become damaged, you should be careful to follow your dentists guidelines for caring for your temporaries - including using good oral hygiene, abiding by dietary restrictions, and using protective mouth gear during sports or high impact activity.. ...

What does getting an onlay involve?. An onlay procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate impressions (molds) that will be used to create your custom onlay and a temporary restoration.. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials. The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared, shaping the surface to properly fit an onlay restoration. A temporary filling will be applied to protect the tooth while your onlay is made by a dental laboratory.. At your second appointment, your new onlay will be carefully and precisely cemented into place. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit and that your bite is comfortable.. You will receive care instruction at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new onlay.. ...
If a previous filling needs to be replaced or if there is enough damage created from tooth decay, an onlay may be a better option for treatment than a filling or a crown.. These can be fabricated with porcelain to address esthetic concerns or a gold alloy if strength is needed. This can be the best way to conservatively maintain the structure of the walls of the tooth.. Onlays are fabricated in a dental laboratory from an impression taken by your dentist after the tooth has been prepared. You will be made a temporary restoration for approximately 2 weeks before the final onlay can be inserted. ...
Application of tourniquets to extremity sites can be fraught with complications, but proper use can provide adequate hemorrhage control in patients where direct pressure is ineffective. Commercial products are available; however, a simple well-placed blood pressure cuff can provide similar results. Gauze should be placed underneath the cuff to protect intact skin, and the cuff should be inflated initially to 20 mm Hg above patients blood pressure. Higher pressure may be required. It is advised that a tourniquet be in place for no longer than 60 minutes total, and no longer than 20-30 minutes before releasing for 5 minutes for temporary restoration of blood flow to prevent distal tissue ischemia. ...
Provisionalization is a necessary stage in the prosthetic restoration of the majority of patients that require tooth reduction during aesthetic enhancement. Through this process, the members of the treatment team are able to evaluate and perform aesthetic, phonetic, and functional adjustments to the provisional restoration while simultaneously preserving or enhancing the state of the dental and gingival tissues during the fabrication of the definitive prosthesis.1,2 Although provisionalization can be performed in numerous manners that include acrylic resin,3 the "sandwich technique,"1 direct composite bonding,2,4 and laboratory-fabricated provisional veneers,4 these techniques are often inefficient based upon the handling properties of the provisional material, the durability of the provisional restoration, or the expenses involved. These procedures may be complicated by the duration or difficulty of the chairside fabrication process as well. Provisional materials also exhibit a tendency to lose ...

Root canals, or an endodontic procedure is usually performed when the root system of the tooth has become infected. I use special instruments to clean out and remove the infection. Once this is complete, I seal off all of the canals with a material called Gutta Percha. It is an antimicrobial material designed to inhibit bacterial growth and allow the bone and surrounding tissue to heal up around the roots of the tooth. The chamber of the tooth, or crown portion, is filled with cotton and a temporary material called cavit. Depending upon how much tooth structure was damaged from decay or trauma, a core and crown are usually recommended about 2 weeks afterwards once we know the procedure was a success.. Root canal therapy is a surgical procedure and some discomfort and swelling may occur for a few days afterwards. This is normal. The swelling is usually internal and not immediately visible to the naked eye. Soreness of the area is a sign there is some swelling and care should be taken not to ...
