Alexandria, Va., USA - The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published a special issue of the Journal of Dental Research (JDR) on orofacial pain. Ronald Dubner, University of Maryland, Baltimore, USA, served as the guest editor of this special issue.. Today, pain is a health problem that requires a broader perspective than in the past. Millions of people suffer from overlapping chronic pain conditions that share co-morbid behavioral, physiological and psychological characteristics as well as genetic determinants. Many of these conditions affect the orofacial region uniquely or have accompanied widespread systemic manifestations. This includes temporomandibular disorders (TMD), headache, arthritis, and fibromyalgia, to name just a few.. The recognition of the above issues and their importance to students, dental scientists and practitioners has led to this special issue, which highlights the latest developments in the field of chronic orofacial pain. ...

Context: Periodontal tissue destruction is caused by an inappropriate host response to microorganisms. Diabetes is a metabolic disease and most of its complications are due to hyperglycemia. Periodontitis is considered as its sixth complication. Micronutrients such as zinc, copper and iron are essential for human health. There is accumulating evidence that the metabolism of several trace elements is altered in diabetes mellitus and that these nutrients might have specific roles in the pathogenesis and progress of this disease and its complication. An association between micronutrients and periodontitis has also been suggested by preliminary studies. However, till date there is a lack of relevant clinical data. Aim: This study was designed to estimate and compare the serum levels of zinc, copper and iron in diabetes mellitus type 2 patients and healthy individuals with and without periodontitis. Setting and Design: Single centre case-control study. Subjects and Materials: This study included 150 ...
Statement of Problem: The use of osseointegrated implants as a foundation for the prosthetic replacement of missing teeth has become widespread in the last decade. Owing to the remarkable success of dental implants, there has been growing interest in identifying the factors associated with implant failure. Given the well-documented deleterious effect of smoking on wound healing after tooth extraction and its association with poor quality bone and periodontal disease, a negative effect of tobacco use on implant success is to be expected. Purpose: To establish the relationship between smoking and implant-related surgical procedures (i.e, sinus lift procedures, bone grafts and dental implants), including the incidence of complications related to these procedures and the long-term survival and success rates of dental implants among smokers and nonsmokers based on relevant literature. Materials and Methods: Relevant clinical studies published in English between 1990 and 2006 were reviewed. The ...

Malignant melanoma of the mandibular gingiva is extremely rare. It is a malignant tumour of melanocytes or their precursor cells, and often misinterpreted as a benign pigmented process. A few reports have described computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of malignant melanoma in the oral cavity. We report a rare case of malignant melanoma of the mandible and the related CT and MRI findings. Soft tissue algorithm contrast-enhanced CT showed an expansile mass and irregular destruction of alveolar bone in the right side of the mandibular molar area. MR images showed an enhancing mass and the tumour had a low to intermediate signal intensity and a high-signal intensity. Soft tissue algorithm contrast-enhanced CT and MR images showed lymphadenopathy involving the submandibular lymph nodes. Seoul, Republic of Korea - Today at the 94th General Session & Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research, researcher W. Peter Holbrook, University of Iceland, will present a study titled Development of Drugs for Local Treatment of Oral Conditions. The IADR General Session is being held in conjunction with the 3rd Meeting of the IADR Asia Pacific Region and the 35th Annual Meeting of the IADR Korean Division.. Several medications commonly prescribed for oral mucosal administration are actually intended for transdermal application. Many conditions affecting the oral mucosa require frequent or long-term treatments and some treatments are systemically applied. Clinical resistance and patient intolerance of such treatments may develop. There is thus a constant need to address these problems through the development of less side-effect prone drugs.. Researchers at the University of Iceland have developed several new formulations for topical treatments of oral mucosal conditions ...

In a study that analyzed research on dental caries it was concluded that chewing sugar-free gum helps reduce deterioration of cavities. What was revealed in the review published the Journal of Dental Research was that sugar free gum could not only reduce the advancement of dental caries, but may be used as a preventative strategy. It was further concluded that chewing sugar free gum could be an alternative for strategies such as oral hygiene instruction and supervised teeth brushing programs. In addition to this current study, 12 other studies done over the last 50 years are analyzed. ...

For those who havent heard or read the story, its probably a little difficult to see the connection between dental research, X-ray science, and the Morecambe and Wise show.. Since the early 90s, I have been working on the design and application of X-ray microtomography (XMT) scanners, which are essentially microscopic forms of medical CT scanners. XMT differs from its full-size medical counterpart in that it is only used to scan small inanimate specimens (from millimetres to a few centimetres), it takes longer, and whereas with medical CT the X-ray system rotates about the patient, with XMT it is the specimen that rotates. In dentistry, we use XMT in research, where we can scan extracted human teeth and precisely map the mineral concentration in three dimensions. This enables us to study the way that teeth lose mineral under acid attack, and where possible, test experimental methods of reversing the process. Although most of the focus of our facility is on tooth and bone samples, we are often ...

Eating sugar and sugar-filled products is driving the cost of tooth care through the roof according to a recent study from a German university.. The study from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) looked at sugar and what the report calls hidden sugar as found in processed food, soft drinks, condiments, bread and desserts.. The data shows a clear correlation between the consumption of sugar and the incidence of caries (cavities), parodontitis (periodontitis, gum disease) and, as a result, tooth loss, said Dr. Toni Meier from the Institute of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences at the MLU. Dr. Meier was the lead author of the report published in the International Journal of Dental Research.. The dental study shows that for every 25 grams of sugar consumed in a day, the cost of dental care goes up by $100 a year per person. A glass of sweetened lemonade contains 25 grams of sugar on average.. The study points out that beating sugar is hard to do. So much of the processed food ...
At present, 3-D printing is being utilized in dental research laboratory all over the places in the world. Speaking today during the 86th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, a team of investigators from Baylor College of Dentistry (Dallas), the University of Regensburg (Germany), and Rice University (Houston) presents its preliminary data describing the results of studies on hydrogels made of peptide amphiphiles, where a short peptide sequence is attached to a fatty acid, which provides the driving force for self-assembly. However, they recently applied a different design concept, where the self-assembly of peptide chains is achieved without attaching a hydrophobic tail. Based on their design, the chains can include bioactive peptide sequences for cell adhesion, binding of growth factors, or other biological molecules with therapeutic potential. Hence, multidomain peptide hydrogels represent a novel and highly versatile material offering a higher degree of control over nanofiber architecture and better chemical functionality ...

The additional fluoride from drinking two to four cups of tea a day wont harm anyone; its the very heavy tea drinkers who could get in trouble, said Dr. Gary Whitford, Regents Professor of oral biology in the School of Dentistry. He presented his findings today at the 2010 International Association of Dental Research Conference in Barcelona, Spain.. Most published reports show 1 to 5 milligrams of fluoride per liter of black tea, but a new study shows that number could be as high as 9 milligrams.. Fluoride is known to help prevent dental cavities, but long-term ingestion of excessive amounts could cause bone problems. The average person ingests a very safe amount, 2 to 3 milligrams, daily through fluoridated drinking water, toothpaste and food. It would take ingesting about 20 milligrams a day over 10 or more years before posing a significant risk to bone health.. Whitford discovered that the fluoride concentration in black tea had long been underestimated when he began analyzing data from ...

Ive mentioned before how it is I comb through support group subject matter for the most useful information: what reoccurs most frequently, and how effective? There is a long list of other recommendations that Ive noted to myself, but the items I use are the ones that work for my kids, focused on gut integrity to encourage healing from the inside.. In the remineralization group, I saw a lot of recommendations for How to Remineralize Teeth Naturally & Reverse Tooth Decay by Wellness Mama, and the primary dental literature used was a toss-up between the book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration (Weston Price, 8th ed, 2009) and the book Cure Tooth Decay: Heal And Prevent Cavities With Nutrition - Limit And Avoid Dental Surgery and Fluoride (Ramiel Nigel, 2nd ed, 2010). There is great interest in characterizing the genetic architecture underlying drug response. For many drugs, gene-based dosing models explain a considerable amount of the overall variation in treatment outcome. As such, prescription drug labels are increasingly being modified to contain pharmacogenetic information. Genetic data must, however, be interpreted within the context of relevant clinical covariates. Even the most predictive models improve with the addition of data related to biogeographical ancestry. The current review explores analytical strategies that leverage population structure to more fully characterize genetic determinants of outcome in large clinical practice-based cohorts. The success of this approach will depend upon several key factors: (1) the availability of outcome data from groups of admixed individuals (that is, populations recombined over multiple generations), (2) a measurable difference in treatment outcome (that is, efficacy and toxicity end points), and (3) a ...
Discourse abilities of individuals with traumatic brain injury presented at the Portland State University Student Research Symposium. The findings of this study support the idea that discourse analysis may be a useful tool for determining subtle, cognitive-communication deficits in the TBI population that common neuropsychological tests may not detect. Such information may be important clinically for validating persisting cognitive symptoms and guiding effective therapy goals. Linguistic disruptions may reveal cognitive impairments due to diffuse damage of the brain.
