Overview Screen for Electronic Dental Records - Dental Software Advisor
No one denies that the gap between electronic dental record design and the practical needs of dental offices can sometimes seem wide. Researchers at the Center for Dental Informatics (CDI) at the University of Pittsburgh are working on behalf of dentists to bridge this gap and improve software design.

ASFO Dental Record Retention Position Paper | American Society of Forensic Odontology
Right now, in the United States, there is a problem that every dentist can help with. As of July 1, 2014 there were 8,118 unidentified people reported by medical examiners and coroners to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Over eight thousand decedents are waiting to be identified, with countless more family members grieving for their loved ones.. There are several ways to identify someone who has died. Visually is one way, but it is not as accurate as other, scientific means. If there has been decomposition, burning, or trauma, very often visual identification may not be possible or could lead to misidentification. If these conditions are advanced, fingerprint identification may not be possible, either. DNA is a wonderful tool in forensics, but it is costly if done at a private lab, and if done in a federally funded lab, the wait time in 2011 was one year. For these reasons, dental record comparison is often the fastest, most cost effective, scientific method of ...

NCIC, flawed dental records hits?
I found this article while looking for something else, and it is worth a look. It shows that the NCIC system of matching dental records of missing persons and deceased persons is flawed. If I had a missing loved one who was eliminated through dentals, I would be very concerned. Its a long article, but worth the read. I pulled the most relivent part, but please see the link for the full article.

writecharacter: Dental Records in Character Development
There are all kinds of ways to include dentistry in a story. What is the characters attitude toward his or her teeth? (i.e. believes he has soft teeth, believes he has ugly teeth or weak teeth). How is that played out? Is there a specific problem involving teeth that defines this character for the reader? What is the background of dentistry for this character (had good care, spent a lot of money on his teeth, never had a cavity filled). Include how he has been treated in dental offices, early traumas in dental offices, etc. How do others see the characters teeth, if teeth are an issue? How would dental history or teeth in general advance the plot (i.e. Russian stainless steel teeth in a spy story)? Teeth are very much like overweight. People who are aware of their bad teeth dont smile, or cover their smile with their hands ...

My Life as an American Gladiator: 01/01/2002 - 02/01/2002
You leave the casino in Atlantic City and theres just nothing else going on. Unless you get mugged and beaten so badly you have to be identified by your dental records. Actually, they check you at the airport to make sure that you have your dental records along, so they can identify you later. Nice of them. When I say airport, I mean Philadelphia airport. I flew into Philly and had to take a shuttle for an hour and a half to get to Atlantic City. On the way back, though, I did get filmed by some local Philadelphia news station, so if you saw someone glaring at the camera on your local Philadelphia news, you may have gotten a glimpse into the depths of my admiration of Atlantic City. They filmed my face, then my bags (which I made sure to pack as heavy as possible for added fun), then my face again. I never understand these people who just lose it when they are on camera and start jumping around and waving. My look told the cameraman pretty much instantly that I was considering some Sean ...

Taking Care of Your Teeth
The main reason for going to the dentist regularly - every 6 months - is prevention. The goal is to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other disorders that put the health of your teeth and mouth at risk.. Your first consultation with a dentist will probably consist of three main parts: a dental and medical history (where the dentist or dental hygienist asks you questions about your tooth care and reviews any dental records), a dental examination, and a professional cleaning.. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and other mouth tissues. He or she may also examine the joints of your jaws. The dentist will use a mirror and probe (a metal pick-like instrument) to check the crown (visible part) of each tooth for plaque and evidence of looseness or decay. The dentist also will check your bite and the way your teeth fit together (called occlusion).. Your dentist will examine the general condition of your gums, which should be firm and pink, not soft, swollen, or inflamed. He or she (or an ...

JPM | Free Full-Text | Saving More Teeth-A Case for Personalized Care
Background: Certain risk factors such as tobacco use, diabetes, genetic variations on the IL1 gene, and other inflammatory conditions are hypothesized to predict tooth loss in patients treated in a large medical center. Tooth loss trends are hypothesized to be greater in patients with more risk factors. Methods: DNA samples for 881 individuals were taken from the Dental Registry and DNA Repository at University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Clinical data for all 4137 subjects in the registry were also available. SNP genotyping was performed on the samples for IL1α (rs1800587) and IL1β (rs1143634). IL1 positive status was determined as having one or more of the recessive alleles for either SNP. Tooth loss status was determined based on dental records and data gathered for age, sex, ethnicity, and self-reported medical history. Various statistical analyses were performed on the data including genetic association analysis by the PLINK software, chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, and ANOVA tests to

Research Archives - Patricia Hogarth
by Patricia Hogarth , 25 Jul 2016 , Research , 0 comments. Flannery OConnor, the American writer and essayist, said, Writing a novel is a terrible experience, during which the hair often falls out and the teeth decay. Many would agree with her; the time from the germination of an idea to completion or publication can seem like an eternity.. Given my background in dentistry, OConnors mention of tooth decay grabbed my attention, and had me champing at the bit to write a few words on the subject.. The processes involved in forensic odontology-pouring models of bite marks to help prove an offenders guilt, identifying remains through dental records, and determining a persons age by the eruption sequence of their dentition-are all fascinating. From braces to porcelain crowns, and from thumb-sucking babes to edentulous (toothless) old witches with warts on their noses, dental matters can be surprisingly important to a writer and play a big part in plot and character development.. This was going to be the rough day. Two quizzes, a SOAP note and an MTM all were on the schedule. So lab begins by going over our SOAP note for a diabetic patient. My answers were similar to everyone else so I feel okay about it. I might not get a 100, but I should at least earn an A. I did the worst I have ever done on a lab quiz - worst of all it was because of the calculations. I worked everything out to discover my two answers were off by 1000x. In finding a mass, I messed up the Weight Percent (like 3% NaCl) as mg/mL instead of the correct g/mL. I got cocky and it cost me 5 points out of 25. The rest of lab was just talking about insulins. We took a look at insulin pens and the subcutaneous needles. Then we actually gave ourselves the shots we will have to teach patients to give, but with saline. I did not feel a thing ...

US9769166B1 - Wearable sensor based system for person identification - Google Patents
A system, method and computer program product for real-time recognition of individuals. The method comprises: receiving at a hardware processor, a first sensor data associated with the individual. The first sensor data associated with the individual is processed to determine an activity the individual is currently engaged in. Additionally, a second sensor data associated with the individual is received and processed to determine a feature associated with a muscle of said individual while engaged in activity. Based on the received sensor data and determined activity and muscle features, the method generates a model that correlates determined activities and corresponding muscle features of the individual user with the individuals identity. The model is subsequently used to identify the individual. By receiving and inputting real-time, sensor data from an individual into said generated model, the model generates and determines: an activity and a muscle feature for use in identifying the individual.
