The impaction of dental prostheses in either the airway or esophagus is an under-recognized problem which may result in severe morbidity or even mortality. The radio-opacity and the size of fixed and removable dental prostheses in an animal carcass was investigated. Prostheses were placed one at a time in the oro-laryngopharynx or in tho trachea and the esophagus. Lateral radiographs were taken for each prosthesis in site. The radio-opacity and size of the prostheses on the radiograph was graded. Most of the prostheses investigated were radio-opaque though the removable prostheses were more likely to be radiolucent and differ in size. In a symptomatic patient with a missing dental prosthesis, a negative chest or abdominal radiograph does not exclude impaction, inhalation or ingestion. Further evaluation with endoscopy or even computed tomography may be essential to reduce the possibility of severe morbidity or even mortality.. ...

Objective : To evaluate the periodontitis, dentition defect and edentulous jaw status of old patients with Diabetes Mellitus in Weihui. Methods: The patients over 60 years old with diabetes mellitus in department of stomatology, the first affiliated hospital of Xinxiang medical college in recent three years were examined for periodontitis, dentition defect and edentulous jaw status, the results were compared with the control group. Results: 70.02% of the old patients with diabetes mellitus suffered from periodontitis, 66.36% from dentition defect, 18.26% from edentulous jaw. There were significant differences between the two groups (P0.01). Conclusion: The oral health status of this population is far from satisfactory. We should strengthen the education of oral health and more dental care services should be performed.

We present a recent investigation regarding the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the monitoring of the calibration loss of sintering ovens for the manufacturing of metal ceramic dental prostheses. Differences in the temperatures of such ovens with regard to their specifications lead to stress and even cracks in the prostheses material, therefore to the failure of the dental treatment. Evaluation methods of the ovens calibration consist nowadays of firing supplemental samples; this is subjective, expensive, and time consuming. Using an in-house developed swept source (SS) OCT system, we have demonstrated that a quantitative assessment of the internal structure of the prostheses, therefore of the temperature settings of the ovens can be made.
