The aim of the present study was to test the association between social vulnerability and the prevalence of traumatic dental injury (TDI). A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out with 1,556 schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The participants were examined for TDI using Andreasens criteria and those diagnosed with TDI were interviewed to determine the history of the injury. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was used for socioeconomic classification, which addresses environmental, cultural, economic, legal and security/survival dimensions. The Poisson regression model was used for the multivariate analysis, with the significance level set at 5%. The prevalence of TDI was 14.1%; 59.3% of the participants with TDI did not seek a dentist after the incident. Poorer environmental, economic and legal conditions were statistically associated with the occurrence of untreated TDI (p | 0.05) and all the five SVI dimensions were associated with seeking a

You might be thinking of getting braces because you want to be more attractive or appear more youthful. Some people get braces in order to improve their self-confidence, so they wont feel embarrassed to smile. Or maybe you had a discussion with your dentist concerning the benefits of healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay, create or worsen gum disease and lead to tooth loss.
Baby (primary) teeth look and function much like their permanent counterparts. Besides having a visible crown, they also have roots that maintain contact with the jawbone. But there are some differences, the biggest one being the normal process whereby primary tooth roots dissolve or, in dental terms, resorb. Root resorption eventually leads to the tooth coming loose to make way for the permanent tooth.. Adult tooth roots can also resorb - but its decidedly not normal. If adult root resorption isnt promptly treated, it could also lead to tooth loss - but there wont be an incoming tooth to take its place.. Although it can begin inside a tooth, adult root resorption usually begins on the outside. One type, external cervical resorption (ECR), begins around the neck-like area of the tooth not far below the gum line. Its initial signs are small pink spots where the tooth enamel has eroded; those pink cells within the space are doing the damage.. We dont fully understand the mechanism behind ECR, ...
If a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth, time is of the essence. The tooth should be handled very gently, avoiding touching the root surface itself. If it is dirty, quickly and gently rinse it in water. Do not use soap or any other cleaning agent, and never scrape or brush the tooth. If possible, the tooth should be placed back into its socket as soon as possible. The less time the tooth is out of its socket, the better the chance for saving it. Call a dentist immediately!. If you cannot put the tooth back in its socket, it needs to be kept moist in special solutions that are available at many local drugstores (such as Save-A-Tooth). If those solutions are unavailable, you should put the tooth in milk. Doing this will keep the root cells in your tooth moist and alive for a few hours. Another option is to simply put the tooth in your mouth between your gum and cheek. Do not place the tooth in regular tap water because the root surface cells do not tolerate it.. ...
Young adults, of typical age and gender distribution of lingual orthodontic patients [41, 42], were chosen as good candidates to wear lingual appliances (1) because they are more interested in esthetic appliances and then (2) because in children and adolescents, some teeth are partially erupted and not good for taking precise impressions for lingual setup and indirect bonding. Moreover, in the literature, we can find many articles analyzing various similar ranges of age [17, 22, 34, 43, 44]. The majority of patients enrolled in the present study were females less than 23 years of age. Stadelmann et al. found that almost a quarter of the population undergoes an orthodontic treatment, half of it with a mean age of 15 to 24 years old [45].. As regards intragroup differences, the significant increases in PI and GBI values from T 0 to T 2 in the lingual orthodontic group could be explained by the fact that plaque deposits on the lingual gingival margin of the teeth are more difficult to remove with ...
Numerous experiments have been carried out in order to identify occlusal trauma as an etiologic factor in the pathogenesis of periodontopathies. With Periotest (http://www.periotest.de/) an instrument is available to quantify occlusal overstressing. In 905 teeth and 43 patients with periodontitis the Perio-test values were determined without occlusal contact and under maximum habitual occlusion. Clinical parameters like probing depth, recession, papillary bleeding index, bone resorption and qualitative such as tipped tooth, filling, abrasion facets in the occlusal areas and eccentric abrasion facets were evaluated. Bone resorption was determined based on intraoral radiographs. Multi-ple linear regression calculations between standard Periotest values (Periotest value without tooth contact) or Periotest value differences (the difference between Periotest values under maximum habitual occlusion and without occlusal contact) as dependent variables and the quanti-tative parameters as independent ...

Successful diagnosis and management of this condition requires an awareness of its existence and appropriate diagnostic tests. The aim of this article is to report a clinical case of a cracked tooth syndrome appeared in maxillary left second molar and emphasize on its diagnosis and management. A 45-year-old female patient reported with pain on her maxillary left second molar for the past two months, which increased when biting or chewing. The tooth was tender on palpation and fistula was seen on the gingival region. Radiograph examination revealed a radiolucent area on the apical region. A fracture line running mesio-distally on the occlusal surface was visible using a staining technique. The tooth was ...
If an injury causes a tooth to be completely knocked out of your mouth, it is important that you seek treatment immediately! It is important to keep the avulsed tooth moist. If possible, put it back into the socket. A tooth can be saved if it remains moist. You can even put the tooth in milk or a glass of water (add a pinch of salt). Root canal treatment may be necessary based upon the stage of root development. The length of time the tooth was out of your mouth and the way the tooth was stored may influence the type of treatment you receive and how successful the outcome.. ...

Symmetrical dental occlusion blocking is used in dentistry as a quick diagnostic tool to test for potential influences of the craniomandibular system on body sway and weight distribution. This study presents the changes of body sway and pressure distribution in healthy subjects, free of a temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Immediate effects between occlusal blocking and rest position on body sway and body weight distribution in general, as well as for both genders and for four age decades will be evaluated. 725 (396f/329 m) subjects (neither subjective signs of TMD nor acute/chronic complaints in the musculoskeletal system) volunteered (21 to 60 years) while both genders were divided into four age groups according to decades. A pressure measuring platform was used. Body sway and weight distribution were recorded in two dental occlusion conditions (a) in rest position and (b) symmetrical blocking (bicuspid region) by cotton rolls. Both, the frontal sway and the sagittal sway reduced by 0.67 mm (t(724)

What causes the cracking of molars?. For years, I thought the answer was simple: popcorn. Now that Im on my third cracked molar and my third crown, I finally have a little better answer: clenching. Simply put, clenching or grinding teeth weakens them and makes them prone to cracking. And up to 80% of people clench, many at night when they are not even aware of it!. I am studiously avoiding blame casting. The fact is I have been able to afford to get the dental treatment I need and I have a wonderful dentist. For that, I am grateful! But I want to share this in the event it could be helpful to someone else.. The math of the matter is this: a $300 night guard may have prevented all of my cracked teeth. If it had prevented even one it would have more than paid for itself, even factoring in insurance. You see, insurance will pay half of the cost of a crown; so for each of my three crowns, my co-pay has been approximately $600. Double the cost of the prevention.. As soon as I get this crown paid ...

Despite the stringent requirements of class II genes to have both a sharp increase and decrease in transcript levels, 792 fly genes were classified in this class. This is consistent with earlier reports in D. melanogaster (Arbeitman et al, 2002) and also C. elegans (Baugh et al, 2003). As shown in Table Ib, the class II genes are enriched in transcription factors and lethal phenotype genes (hereafter referred to as lethals; see Materials and methods) and not surprisingly, this class shows an overrepresentation of genes with functions involved in development. More specifically, many of these genes are annotated as encoding proteins involved in histogenesis, organogenesis, ectoderm development, cell differentiation, and cell fate commitment (Table Ib; GO analysis). The class II group is also enriched in genes that encode well‐characterized transcription factors (P,0.05, t2‐test).. Of the class II genes, 303 (38%) are found in only three groups; a, b, and c, each defined by specific ...
The metabolic syndrome (MS) has been assessed since childhood mainly because of the nutritional and epidemiological transition that has occurred worldwide. Our objectives were to explore the MS and its components according to anthropometric and demographic factors and to assess the relationship among MS components and dietary characteristics in overweight and obese schoolchildren. This was a cross-sectional study which included 147 schoolchildren (aged 6-10 years) from three elementary schools, with body mass index (BMI) higher than the 85th percentile. Sexual maturation stages, anthropometric measures (weight, height, skinfold thickness and waist circumference), biochemical data (glucose, HDL-C and triacylglycerol), blood pressure and dietary intake were assessed. The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed if three or more of the following components were presented: waist circumference ≥90th age and sex-specific cut-off, blood pressure ≥90th age, sex and height-specific cut-off, glucose ≥100 mg/dL, HDL

Objective(s): Occlusal trauma is one of the most common forms of oral biting dysfunction. Long-term occlusal trauma could weaken the stomatognathic system; especially damage ones masticatory muscle. Through using the rat model, this study investigated the trophic effect of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) on injured masseter muscle. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats (n=36) were randomly divided into five experimental groups and one control group (6 rats per group). Animals in the experimental group were cemented modified crowns on their mandibular first molars to artificially induce occlusal trauma in 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. Control group was sham-treated with forced mouth-opening for about 5 min, while no crowns were placed. After 28 days of treatment, all rats were euthanized and their masseter muscle was collected. Through immunofluorescence and real-time quantitative PCR, the expression of desmin, CNTF, and CNTFRα was investigated in rat masseter muscle. The microstructure of ...

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a musculoskeletal disorder that involves various clinical conditions of masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints and accompanied tissues. The most prominent symptom is pain in masticatory muscles. The etiology of TMD is poorly understood. Objectives of this study were to examine the individual effect of chronic stress and occlusal interference, as well as their combined influence on masseter muscle pain. The study also aimed to investigate influence of proposed etiological factors on systemic and local level of interleukine-6 (IL-6) and to find possible correlation between IL-6 and muscle pain. The aim was to estimate the contribution of chronic stress, occlusal interference and IL-6 levels on masseter muscle pain and to estimate contribution of chronic stress and occlusal interference on IL-6 levels. Material and methods: Experiments were performed on 50 male Wistar rats. Animals were divided in five groups of 10 rats. Groups were as ...
We previously developed a model in which rabbit gall bladder epithelial cells in collagen gels proliferated and formed multicellular spherical cysts after 2 to 4 days. In the present study, we examined in depth the dynamic processes of loss and reestablishment of cell polarity of rabbit gallbladder epithelial cells isolated and cultured in collagen gel. Six hours after being place in culture, the isolated epithelial cells had lost the morphologic features and phenotypic markers inherent in the in vivo gallbladder mucosa, and autophagic vacuoles appeared transiently, reflecting epithelial cell injury, or remodelling, or both. After 12 hours, mucin dots appeared in clumps of epithelial cells and gradually became larger, and the epithelial cell clumps were transformed into multicellular cysts after 1 to 2 days. The luminal surfaces of the mucin dots (intracytoplasmic inclusions or small lumens sealed by several epithelial cells) and multicellular cysts were covered by microvilli and presented profiles of
Dental trauma is most common in younger people, accounting for 17% of injuries to the body in those aged 0-6 years compared to an average of 5% across all ages.[40] It is more frequently observed in males compared to females.[41] Traumatic dental injuries are more common in permanent teeth compared to deciduous teeth and usually involve the front teeth of the upper jaw.[42] The oral region comprises 1% of the total body area, yet it accounts for 5% of all bodily injuries. In preschool children, oral injuries make up as much as 17% of all bodily injuries. The incidence of traumatic dental injuries is 1%-3%, and the prevalence is steady at 20%-30%.[43] Almost 30% of the children in pre-school have mostly experienced trauma to primary teeth. Dental injuries involving the permanent teeth happen to almost 25% of children in school and 30% of adults. The incident varies in different countries as well as within the country itself. Dental traumatic accidents depends on ones activity status and also ...

Among nearly 5,200 Brazilian schoolchildren 7-14 years of age, children who had not been breastfed during infancy were more likely to suffer from asthma, wheeze (labored breathing, particularly when exhaling, sometimes accompanied by tightness in the chest), or wheeze after exercise compared with children breastfed for six months or more. This association was noted only in children without a family history of asthma, emphasizing the independent protective influence of breastfeeding on asthma risk. These findings add to the considerable evidence linking breastfeeding with positive health benefits for the child. Keratinocytes respond to environmental signals by eliciting induction of genes that preserve skins integrity. Here we show that the transcriptional response to stress signaling is supported by short-lived epigenetic changes. Comparison of chromatin accessibility and transcriptional changes induced by barrier disruption or by loss of the nucleosome remodeler Mi-2β identified their striking convergence in mouse and human keratinocytes. Mi-2β directly repressed genes induced by barrier disruption by restricting AP1-enriched promoter-distal sites, occupied by Mi-2β and JUNB at steady state and by c-JUN after Mi-2β depletion or stress signaling. Barrier disruption led to a modest reduction in Mi-2β expression and a further selective reduction of Mi-2β localization at stress response genes, possibly through competition with activated c-JUN. Consistent with a repressive role at stress response genes, genetic ablation of Mi-2β did not prevent reestablishment of barrier integrity but was required ...
