TY - JOUR. T1 - Cerebellar infarction resulting from traumatic occlusion of a vertebral artery. Case report. AU - Heros, R. C.. PY - 1979/1/1. Y1 - 1979/1/1. N2 - A case is reported of a patient who suffered a gunshot wound of the neck which resulted in occlusion of a vertebral artery. Within a few hours he deteriorated neurologically to a comatose state with a gaze paresis and a facial paresis ipsilateral to the occluded vertebral artery. The diagnosis of cerebellar infarction with brain-stem compression was made clinically, and a posterior fossa decompression was carried out promptly. The patient has made an excellent recovery. Cerebellar infarction, like cerebellar hemorrhage, may act as a posterior fossa mass requiring neurosurgical decompression. This report emphasizes that such a pathological process may occur after certain injuries that are likely to result in occlusion of a vertebral artery.. Dietary fish oil has been shown to inhibit bone resorption and, therefore, the aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that fish oil alters lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hydroxyapatite loss in rat alveolar bone. Rats were divided into four groups. The animals injected with saline or Escherichia coli-derived LPS into the maxillary alveolar mucosa on the buccoapical site of the molar region daily for 8 days were served as a negative or positive control, respectively. Other groups of animals were injected with LPS and orally treated with fish oil at the same day with or after LPS injection. The results of the present study showed that the hydroxyapatite contents of alveolar bone in rats treated with fish oil at the same day with or before LPS injection were significantly higher than those in rats injected with LPS alone, but still lower than those in untreated animals. Therefore, the present study suggests that oral treatment with fish oil may reduce LPS-induced hydroxyapatite loss ...
The Removal of Teeth for the Future Health of Those Remaining. Nourishment to Teeth Interfered With. Teeth receive nourishment from the blood stream and surrounding tissues. If there is any impediment or irritation any place along that supply -how can the organ at the end of the line receive its proper amount of subsistence?. In the case of the lower teeth the underlying structure of the teeth often begins to absorb around the centrals before any other place. True, this may be because of traumatic occlusion but an occurrence more than incidental is the fact that some tooth or teeth posterior to the centrals is in an unhealthy state and the amount of nutrition getting to them is less than they and the surrounding tissues need. The removal of a malposed tooth has often cleared up pathological gum condition that were chronic for as much as six years, when if allowed to continue the patients stood a good chance of losing all the nearby teeth in a short time.. I watched with interest the return to ...
Background and Aims: Host immune response is altered by a series of physiologic and pathologic factors like age, gender, inflammation, medical procedures, medication etc. S-IgA 3 months post treatment in the saliva of children in group B and group A were (144.27 5.32) and (164.0 3.23) g/ml respectively. While mean value of S-IgA after 6 months of treatment in group B and group A were (149.8 6.02) and (166.4 3.65) g/ml respectively. Conclusion: Salivary Immunoglobulin A level values were significantly higher statistically in both group A and group B post active orthodontic treatment than AC710 Mesylate before. The results however, showed that Group A (fixed orthodontic group) AC710 Mesylate showed statistically significant higher levels of S-IgA than Group B (removable orthodontic group). Active orthodontic treatment brought on a stronger stimulus for oral secretory immunity, hence the increase in levels were detected. There is a significant positive correlation between S-IgA and active fixed as ...

Neil M. Warshawsky, DDS, MS, orthodontist from Chicago, Illinois, expressed his thoughts on AMD LASERS recent achievement. As the sole proprietor of a multiple office orthodontic group, it takes a lot to get me to buy into a product. I was thrilled when I originally learned of the Picasso laser system. I think the design is clean and simple. The price tag for the unit and the consumables is very fair. Most importantly it does not take a physicist to learn how to properly use this device. As a result, I have learned to use the Picasso laser system in all facets of my practice. Exposing teeth and immediately bonding them, minor frenectomies, gingival recontouring, and canker sores can be done easily in our facilities and we no longer have to refer patients out, said Dr. Warshawsky. What I am most impressed with is AMD LASERS commitment to caring. I wrote a grant requesting a laser for my craniofacial clinic since the anatomy I see is often grossly out of place. AMD LASERS donated a laser to ...

The aim of the present study was to test the association between social vulnerability and the prevalence of traumatic dental injury (TDI). A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out with 1,556 schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The participants were examined for TDI using Andreasens criteria and those diagnosed with TDI were interviewed to determine the history of the injury. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was used for socioeconomic classification, which addresses environmental, cultural, economic, legal and security/survival dimensions. The Poisson regression model was used for the multivariate analysis, with the significance level set at 5%. The prevalence of TDI was 14.1%; 59.3% of the participants with TDI did not seek a dentist after the incident. Poorer environmental, economic and legal conditions were statistically associated with the occurrence of untreated TDI (p | 0.05) and all the five SVI dimensions were associated with seeking a

You might be thinking of getting braces because you want to be more attractive or appear more youthful. Some people get braces in order to improve their self-confidence, so they wont feel embarrassed to smile. Or maybe you had a discussion with your dentist concerning the benefits of healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay, create or worsen gum disease and lead to tooth loss.
Baby (primary) teeth look and function much like their permanent counterparts. Besides having a visible crown, they also have roots that maintain contact with the jawbone. But there are some differences, the biggest one being the normal process whereby primary tooth roots dissolve or, in dental terms, resorb. Root resorption eventually leads to the tooth coming loose to make way for the permanent tooth.. Adult tooth roots can also resorb - but its decidedly not normal. If adult root resorption isnt promptly treated, it could also lead to tooth loss - but there wont be an incoming tooth to take its place.. Although it can begin inside a tooth, adult root resorption usually begins on the outside. One type, external cervical resorption (ECR), begins around the neck-like area of the tooth not far below the gum line. Its initial signs are small pink spots where the tooth enamel has eroded; those pink cells within the space are doing the damage.. We dont fully understand the mechanism behind ECR, ...
If a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth, time is of the essence. The tooth should be handled very gently, avoiding touching the root surface itself. If it is dirty, quickly and gently rinse it in water. Do not use soap or any other cleaning agent, and never scrape or brush the tooth. If possible, the tooth should be placed back into its socket as soon as possible. The less time the tooth is out of its socket, the better the chance for saving it. Call a dentist immediately!. If you cannot put the tooth back in its socket, it needs to be kept moist in special solutions that are available at many local drugstores (such as Save-A-Tooth). If those solutions are unavailable, you should put the tooth in milk. Doing this will keep the root cells in your tooth moist and alive for a few hours. Another option is to simply put the tooth in your mouth between your gum and cheek. Do not place the tooth in regular tap water because the root surface cells do not tolerate it.. ...
Young adults, of typical age and gender distribution of lingual orthodontic patients [41, 42], were chosen as good candidates to wear lingual appliances (1) because they are more interested in esthetic appliances and then (2) because in children and adolescents, some teeth are partially erupted and not good for taking precise impressions for lingual setup and indirect bonding. Moreover, in the literature, we can find many articles analyzing various similar ranges of age [17, 22, 34, 43, 44]. The majority of patients enrolled in the present study were females less than 23 years of age. Stadelmann et al. found that almost a quarter of the population undergoes an orthodontic treatment, half of it with a mean age of 15 to 24 years old [45].. As regards intragroup differences, the significant increases in PI and GBI values from T 0 to T 2 in the lingual orthodontic group could be explained by the fact that plaque deposits on the lingual gingival margin of the teeth are more difficult to remove with ...
Numerous experiments have been carried out in order to identify occlusal trauma as an etiologic factor in the pathogenesis of periodontopathies. With Periotest (http://www.periotest.de/) an instrument is available to quantify occlusal overstressing. In 905 teeth and 43 patients with periodontitis the Perio-test values were determined without occlusal contact and under maximum habitual occlusion. Clinical parameters like probing depth, recession, papillary bleeding index, bone resorption and qualitative such as tipped tooth, filling, abrasion facets in the occlusal areas and eccentric abrasion facets were evaluated. Bone resorption was determined based on intraoral radiographs. Multi-ple linear regression calculations between standard Periotest values (Periotest value without tooth contact) or Periotest value differences (the difference between Periotest values under maximum habitual occlusion and without occlusal contact) as dependent variables and the quanti-tative parameters as independent ...

In the past, at key political junctures, such as when the Pheu Thai was trying to enact an amnesty for Thaksin, the Red Shirts have raised the issue of succession by calling for the reestablishment of the Lanna Kingdom in the north. At other times, Red Shirts (particularly the mainstream leaders) have flatly denied they have ever called for a separate state ...

Successful diagnosis and management of this condition requires an awareness of its existence and appropriate diagnostic tests. The aim of this article is to report a clinical case of a cracked tooth syndrome appeared in maxillary left second molar and emphasize on its diagnosis and management. A 45-year-old female patient reported with pain on her maxillary left second molar for the past two months, which increased when biting or chewing. The tooth was tender on palpation and fistula was seen on the gingival region. Radiograph examination revealed a radiolucent area on the apical region. A fracture line running mesio-distally on the occlusal surface was visible using a staining technique. The tooth was ...
If an injury causes a tooth to be completely knocked out of your mouth, it is important that you seek treatment immediately! It is important to keep the avulsed tooth moist. If possible, put it back into the socket. A tooth can be saved if it remains moist. You can even put the tooth in milk or a glass of water (add a pinch of salt). Root canal treatment may be necessary based upon the stage of root development. The length of time the tooth was out of your mouth and the way the tooth was stored may influence the type of treatment you receive and how successful the outcome.. ...

Symmetrical dental occlusion blocking is used in dentistry as a quick diagnostic tool to test for potential influences of the craniomandibular system on body sway and weight distribution. This study presents the changes of body sway and pressure distribution in healthy subjects, free of a temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Immediate effects between occlusal blocking and rest position on body sway and body weight distribution in general, as well as for both genders and for four age decades will be evaluated. 725 (396f/329 m) subjects (neither subjective signs of TMD nor acute/chronic complaints in the musculoskeletal system) volunteered (21 to 60 years) while both genders were divided into four age groups according to decades. A pressure measuring platform was used. Body sway and weight distribution were recorded in two dental occlusion conditions (a) in rest position and (b) symmetrical blocking (bicuspid region) by cotton rolls. Both, the frontal sway and the sagittal sway reduced by 0.67 mm (t(724)
DR could be a supplementary medicine for periodontal therapy as it could reduce bone resorption in rat model of alveolar bone resorption and exert osteogenic effect on osteoblasts.
A cracked tooth can be painful, annoying, and an exercise in frustration for patients and dentists alike. While there can be many factors that contribute to cracked teeth, the bottom line is that if your tooth is cracked the solution is often involved, potentially expensive and, despite best efforts, tooth loss is still a very real possibility. The following compilation of questions and answers isnt short, but if you think you have a cracked tooth, it is worth reading so that you can know what to expect.

A cracked tooth can result from chewing on hard foods, grinding your teeth at night, and can even occur naturally as you age. Its a common condition
What causes the cracking of molars?. For years, I thought the answer was simple: popcorn. Now that Im on my third cracked molar and my third crown, I finally have a little better answer: clenching. Simply put, clenching or grinding teeth weakens them and makes them prone to cracking. And up to 80% of people clench, many at night when they are not even aware of it!. I am studiously avoiding blame casting. The fact is I have been able to afford to get the dental treatment I need and I have a wonderful dentist. For that, I am grateful! But I want to share this in the event it could be helpful to someone else.. The math of the matter is this: a $300 night guard may have prevented all of my cracked teeth. If it had prevented even one it would have more than paid for itself, even factoring in insurance. You see, insurance will pay half of the cost of a crown; so for each of my three crowns, my co-pay has been approximately $600. Double the cost of the prevention.. As soon as I get this crown paid ...

Despite the stringent requirements of class II genes to have both a sharp increase and decrease in transcript levels, 792 fly genes were classified in this class. This is consistent with earlier reports in D. melanogaster (Arbeitman et al, 2002) and also C. elegans (Baugh et al, 2003). As shown in Table Ib, the class II genes are enriched in transcription factors and lethal phenotype genes (hereafter referred to as lethals; see Materials and methods) and not surprisingly, this class shows an overrepresentation of genes with functions involved in development. More specifically, many of these genes are annotated as encoding proteins involved in histogenesis, organogenesis, ectoderm development, cell differentiation, and cell fate commitment (Table Ib; GO analysis). The class II group is also enriched in genes that encode well‐characterized transcription factors (P,0.05, t2‐test).. Of the class II genes, 303 (38%) are found in only three groups; a, b, and c, each defined by specific ...
The metabolic syndrome (MS) has been assessed since childhood mainly because of the nutritional and epidemiological transition that has occurred worldwide. Our objectives were to explore the MS and its components according to anthropometric and demographic factors and to assess the relationship among MS components and dietary characteristics in overweight and obese schoolchildren. This was a cross-sectional study which included 147 schoolchildren (aged 6-10 years) from three elementary schools, with body mass index (BMI) higher than the 85th percentile. Sexual maturation stages, anthropometric measures (weight, height, skinfold thickness and waist circumference), biochemical data (glucose, HDL-C and triacylglycerol), blood pressure and dietary intake were assessed. The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed if three or more of the following components were presented: waist circumference ≥90th age and sex-specific cut-off, blood pressure ≥90th age, sex and height-specific cut-off, glucose ≥100 mg/dL, HDL
