N2 - Background: To our knowledge no study has evaluated the success or survival rate of single-tooth implants that replaced missing maxillary and mandibular second molars. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the 1- to 5-year cumulative survival rate (CSR) for single-tooth implants placed inthe second molar region and the effects of associated factors. Methods: Four hundred eighty-nine patients (298 males and 191 females; age range: 23 to 91 years; mean age: 47 years) who were admitted to the Seoul National University Dental Hospital between March 2003 and July 2008 and treated with single-tooth implants in the second molar region (227 ...
PMID: 18437793 Purpose: The clinical question this systematic review aimed to answer was What are the differences in outcomes of restored endodontically treated teeth compared to implant-supported restorations? Therefore the aim of this study was to use systematic review to compare the survival of compromised teeth restored with either root canal therapy followed by a crown, or placement of a single-tooth implant. Materials and Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PubMed databases were searched for studies dealing with survival of single-tooth implants and restored endodontically treated teeth. A 2-step screening procedure was used to identify articles that met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Fifty-five studies related to single-tooth implants and 13 studies related to restored root canal treated teeth were included. The endpoint analyzed in these studies was the survival rate of the treated tooth or implant. Results: The 95% confidence intervals for the pooled estimates for the single-tooth implants ...
PURPOSE: Scalloped implants were developed to better maintain marginal bone. Therefore, this study evaluated marginal bone levels (MBLs) and soft tissue around single implants with scalloped necks in the esthetic zone prospectively over a 3-year period. MBLs were compared to those of conventional flat-platform implants at 1 and 3 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients received anterior single-tooth implants and were divided into two groups; the test group included implants with a scalloped neck design and the control group included conventional rough-surface implants with external hex. MBLs were compared radiographically at 1 and 3 years after crown insertion. For the test group, soft and hard tissue assessments were made at six different time points, beginning at abutment connection. Mesial and distal interproximal papillae and probing depths were assessed clinically. Data were analyzed with the Student t test and repeated measures analysis of variance on ranks (P , .05). RESULTS: Twenty-four ...
Within the limits of this study, the data indicate that nonfunctional immediate loading of single-tooth implants placed in fresh extraction sites in the anterior maxilla can result in successful implant integration and stable peri-implant conditions up to 6 years.
DOI: 10.11607/prd.00.0987 Immediate implant placement into extraction sockets has been widely reported in the dental literature, but few studies have evaluated immediate loading of such implants. This retrospective study evaluated 206 implants placed into fresh extraction sites using a flapless technique, followed by immediate provisionalization with nonoccluding single-tooth restorations and definitive restoration within 2 weeks. Cumulative survival and success rates were 98.77% (mean follow-up, 23.1 months). Periodontitis did not influence the outcome adversely. Within the limitations of this study, immediate implant placement and restoration, followed by definitive loading within 2 weeks, achieved outcomes comparable to those historically reported for delayed implants. The survival rates were 87% for NSRT, 94% for endodontic micro-surgery, 89.1% for fixed a partial denture, and 94.5% for a single implant-supported crown.. The effectiveness was divided by the costs, for general dentists and for specialists. For general dentists, ...
A more recent option for treating congenitally missing lateral incisors, and one that currently is recommended often, is the single-tooth implant. Over the past several years, the predictability and long-term success rates of implants have made them an obvious restorative choice,5 especially when teeth adjacent to the space are healthy, of normal size and shape, and unrestored.8,9 Furthermore, placement of an implant may provide a functional stimulus to help preserve bone and prevent resorption.10 However, when choosing the single-tooth implant as a restorative op- tion, several factors must be taken into ac- count such as growth considerations, space requirements, and site development.3 Because an implant acts essentially like an ankylosed tooth, any vertical alveolar growth and eruption of teeth would cause a discrepancy between the gingival margin of the natural tooth and the implant. Therefore, implant placement should occur only after growth has been completed,2-4 and it has been suggested ...
Based upon this study of 307 implants observed during a 4-year period, Morse taper-connection implants represent a good solution for single-tooth restorations, with a very low incidence of abutment loosening (0.66%).

Glenn J. Wolfinger, DMD, FACP**. Int J Periodont Rest Dent 1997; 17:427-435.. Posterior single-tooth implant restorations are subjected to an increased risk of bending overload. A high incidence of implant fracture has been reported when using a single standard 3.75-mm-diameter implant to support a molar restoration. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the clinical feasibility of placing two implants to support a molar restoration and to compare this treatment option to the use of a single standard implant or a wide-diameter implant. Two osseointegrated dental implants used to support a molar restoration in interdental spaces as small as 10 mm is shown to be effective and predictable in 60 restorations over the past 7 years. The use of two implants provides more surface area for osseointegration and spreads the occlusal loading forces out over a wider area, reducing the potential bending forces that would otherwise exist in a single-implant molar restoration. Missing teeth are often replaced by single-tooth implants or implant-supported prostheses. Titanium and titanium based alloys are the state-of-the-art material used for such implants. To ensure long-lasting functionality of dental implants in the human body, a healthy and stable connection between the titanium surface and the surrounding bone tissue is necessary. Colonization of the implant surface by bacteria can interfere with the establishment and maintenance of this connection. In this thesis, two different techniques were applied to modify the surfaces of titanium implant materials with the aim to enhance bone formation and reduce the infection risk around dental implants.. In the first part, the antibiotic doxycycline was coated on titanium surfaces by means of cathodic polarization. Although these doxycycline modified surfaces have previously shown potential to promote bone formation, the in vitro results of the present bacteria study revealed that the observed antibacterial properties of ...

Objective: To investigate the relationship between mini-screw implant (MSI) diameter (1.6 vs 2.0 mm) and shape (tapered vs cylindrical) and the amount of microdamage generated during insertion. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six cylindrical and 36 tapered MSIs, 6 mm long, were used in this study. Half of each shape was 1.6 mm in diameter, while the other half was 2.0 mm. After pilot drilling, four and five MSIs were inserted, respectively, into fresh cadaveric maxillae and mandibles of dogs. Bone blocks containing the MSIs were sectioned and ground parallel to the MSI axis. Epifluorescent microscopy was used to measure overall cortical thickness, crack length, and crack number adjacent to the MSI. Crack density and total microdamage burden per surface length were calculated. Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the effects of jaw, and MSI shape and diameter. Pairwise comparisons were made to control the overall significance level at 5%. Results: The larger (2.0 vs 1.6 mm) ...

A midcrestal, full-thickness incision was performed. Once the flap was reflected, spiral drills were used to establish the future implant osteotomy sites. After establishing the initial implant osteotomy site, a sagittal osteotomy was outlined in the bone by scoring it with a No. 64 Beaver blade. The blade functions as a chisel and is tapped with a surgical mallet in small increments until a creation of a 1- to 3-mm-deep furrow along the length of the ridge. The seam is also made vertically to within 2 mm of the adjoining teeth. Once the crestal furrow and adjacent vertical bone releases have been defined, the bone chisel can be progressively driven deeper (Figure 3). Once the furrow is completed, the implant osteotomy site can be prepared to full dimension by osteotomes of increasing diameter (Friadent GmbH, Mannheim, Germany). Each instrument remained in the implant site for 1 minute before the next diameter was used. Finally, a Tapered Screw-Vent (Zimmer Dental, Carlsbad, Calif) of 3.7 × 13 ...

Implant dentistry is the modern method of replacing missing teeth. Research shows that 85 percent of people who wear full or partial dentures experience some related discomfort and difficulty. Dental implants can eliminate those problems, restore self-confidence and improve the quality of life. From a single missing tooth to an entire set of teeth, dental implants can provide a permanent alternative to problem dentures, and help prevent the premature loss of remaining teeth. Dental implants can last a lifetime and are an excellent investment in oral health.. With dental implants, you can enjoy a greater variety of foods. Your mouth is restored as closely as possible to its original state, with increased comfort, and with preservation of facial structure. There is good possibility that jaw deterioration will be retarded. Best of all, youll be able to smile more naturally, and you can be confident in normal activities such as talking and laughing.. Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts (bridges and dentures).. ▪ Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss.. ▪ Implants may be used in conjunction with other restorative procedures for maximum effectiveness. For example, a single implant can serve to support a crown replacing a single missing tooth. Implants can also be used to support a dental bridge for the replacement of multiple missing teeth, and can be used with dentures to increase stability and reduce gum tissue irritation.. ▪ Procedural advancements, including the development of narrower mini implants, mean that more people than ever before are finding themselves candidates for implantation. However, candidacy for implantation still varies, meaning that your dentist may determine that you should opt for an alternative restoration.. Every way you look at it, dental implants are a better solution to the problem of missing teeth.. ▪ Esthetic: Dental implants look and feel like ...

Dental implants are a standard of care for tooth replacement. They represent the most significant improvement in dental care since the introduction of fluoride in drinking water. If teeth are lost, missing or unable to be saved by restorative procedures, implant replacement may be the best treatment option. Missing teeth can adversely impact a persons function and overall appearance. These tooth replacements can be virtually indiscernible from natural teeth and can dramatically enhance the ease, ability and enjoyment of eating. Implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are lost. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, several missing teeth (partially edentulous patients), or all missing teeth (completely edentulous patients).. Conventional tooth replacement involves reduction of tooth structure of adjacent teeth to support a fixed bridge. With implant therapy, healthy teeth do not need to be reduced or ...
Dental implants are lasting, stable tooth replacements that can be used to replace one missing tooth, several missing teeth or complete arches of teeth. The dental implant post, which is a screw made of titanium, is surgically placed in the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. It replaces the missing tooth root and ensures that your dental restoration is stable. A period of healing is then often required to allow the bone to begin to bond with the biocompatible post.. Following this healing period, our dentists will place the dental implant restoration, or replacement tooth, which fits on top of the implant post. Depending on which teeth are missing and your personal dental needs, your implant restoration might be a dental crown, dental bridge, or a complete or partial denture. Each dental implant restoration is custom made to fit your smile comfortably and aesthetically.. Replacing a missing tooth can restore your smile to optimal health, function and appearance. A dental implant is a ...
Are you missing more than one tooth? If so, youve probably considered getting multiple dental implants. In general, you can expect to spend $3,000-$30,000 for multiple implants. This includes the cost for the entire procedure, including the abutments and crowns.. If, for example, you plan on having two to four teeth replaced, high-quality implants will probably cost you somewhere in the ballpark of $6,000-$10,000. As with the single-tooth option, the cost of multiple implants will depend on the individual circumstances of the patients. Beware of standard pricing quotes. These are almost always off because every patient is different. Figuring out how complicated an implant job will depend on how healthy the patients other teeth are and which teeth are intact.. Multiple implants are typically only performed on people who have healthy teeth on the sides of the open area. Patients must also have healthy gums to hold the implants in their places. How many implants will you need? This all depends ...

A dental bridge is also known as a fixed partial denture. It is used to replace a single missing tooth or a short span of missing teeth. It is a permanent prosthesis, which is joined to the tooth or implant adjacent to the space created by the missing tooth. Before the bridge is fabricated, the adjacent tooth on both sides of the missing space is prepared (a cantilever bridge requires only one adjacent tooth to be prepared). The tooth is reduced to the appropriate size, depending on the material used to fabricate the bridge. The reduced tooth will serve as the anchor unit, holding the bridge in place. A dental bridge can be fabricated using all metal, all porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or gold. Continue reading →. ...
