The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of treatment of mandibular crowding with self-ligating and conventional brackets on dental arch variables. Fifty-six patients were selected from a pool of subjects satisfying the following inclusion criteria: non-extraction treatment in the mandibular or maxillary arches, eruption of all mandibular teeth, no spaces and an irregularity index greater than 2 mm in the mandibular arch, and no adjunct treatment such as etxra- or intraoral appliances. The patients were assigned to two groups: one group received treatment with the self-ligating bracket and the other with a conventional edgewise appliance, both with a 0.022 inch slot. Lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained at the beginning (T1) and end (T2) of treatment were used to assess the alteration in mandibular incisor inclination, and measurements of intercanine and intermolar widths were made on dental casts to investigate changes associated with the correction. The results were ...

Dental arch dimensions are useful in dental practice and in forensic odontology. Local data is essential because ethnic differences exist in dental arch dimensions. In the Ugandan population no studies had been done on dental arch dimensions. The objective of the current study was to determine the variations in dental arch dimensions with age and gender in a sample of dental casts from the Ugandan population. This was a secondary analysis of dental casts previously prepared using mandibular and maxillary arch impressions of 220 children (85 boys and 135 girls) aged 12-17 years recruited from schools in Kampala, Uganda. Dental arch dimensions for the maxilla and mandibular casts were taken using a digital vernier calliper. The data was analysed using the means based independent samples t test to obtain the descriptive statistics with regression analysis being used to obtain the regression coefficients and constants using STATA 12. The overall maxillary dimensions were significantly smaller in females
Purpose: Asymmetrical expansion occurs in patients treated with Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion (SARME). In the clinical setting, this asymmetrical expansion is seen in multiple directions. However, the frequency, actual directions and amount of asymmetry are unclear. Hence, the aim of this study was to analyze the directions and amount of asymmetrical lateral expansion in non-syndromic patients with transversal maxillary hypoplasia on employing bone-borne transpalatal distraction by means of SARME. Treatment involved corticotomies of all four bony supports, including pterygomaxillary disjunction.. Materials and methods: A retrospective case series was formed from patients treated with SARME. Pre- and postdistraction Cone Beam Computed Tomography scans were superimposed. A reference frame was created to analyze lateral expansion asymmetries in five directions.. Results: Clinical relevant asymmetries (,3.0 mm) in at least one of the investigated directions occurred in 55% of the ...
Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) appears to exert either a protective or detrimental effect on the heart; however, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Herein, we uncovered a novel mechanism for turning off the Nrf2-mediated cardioprotection and switching on Nrf2-mediated cardiac dysfunction. In a murine model of pressure overload-induced cardiac remodeling and dysfunction via transverse aortic arch constriction, knockout of Nrf2 enhanced myocardial necrosis and death rate during an initial stage of cardiac adaptation when myocardial autophagy function is intact. However, knockout of Nrf2 turned out to be cardioprotective throughout the later stage of cardiac maladaptive remodeling when myocardial autophagy function became insufficient. Transverse aortic arch constriction -induced activation of Nrf2 was dramatically enhanced in the heart with impaired autophagy, which is induced by cardiomyocyte-specific knockout of autophagy-related gene (Atg)5. Notably, Nrf2 ...
We measured the dental arch of 220 Baghdad patients [120 females and 100 males] attending the University of Baghdad Dental Clinic. Alginate impressions were taken from which stone casts were made. Specified points were noted on the casts and length and width measurements were taken. We found that the length measurements were smaller than the width measurements indicating an ovoid shape of arch. Also, the size of male arches was greater than those of ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment changes and post-treatment stability in dental arch dimensions in unilateral crossbite patients treated by SME while comparing the Haas, Hyrax, and Quad Helix appliances. Serial dental casts of 110 patients were evaluated at 3 time points: pre-expansion (T1), post-expansion (T2), and approximately 4 years later, before fixed appliance therapy (T3). All measurements were compared with published growth norms. Treatment by SME resulted in similarly favorable amounts of expansion by all three expanders in all measurements for both arches. Maxillary intercanine and intermolar width increased by 4.5 mm and 3.5 mm, respectively, from T1 to T3. Maxillary arch circumference also increased by 1 mm. Mandibular width did not change. At 4 years post-expansion, 97% of intercanine expansion and 80% of intermolar expansion was maintained ...
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the cone-beam scan volume measurements between patients with rapid palatal expansion and controls on archived records. Methods: The study included 16 patients who required RPE and 15 controls; all patients had orthodontic treatment and a beginning and progress cone-beam CT scan. The volume area of the palatal region was measured and compared to palatal vault height and width measurements and independent T-tests were used to analyze the continuous variables. Results: The percent of change in crude palatal volume was 11.2% in controls and 24.6% in the RPE group. The mean width increase for the orthodontic only cases was 0.86mm, whereas the mean width increase for the RPE cases was 2.86mm. There was no significant difference in the change of palatal vault height. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in palatal area volume between the RPE and control patients ...

Twelve adults with maxillary width discrepancy of greater than 5 mm were trated by surgicaly assisted rapid maxillary expansion. The procedure consisted of bilateral zygomatic buttress and midpalatal osteotomies combined with the use of a tooth-borne orthopedic device postoperatively. Mean palatal expansion of 7.5 mm (range of 6 to 13 mm), measured in the first molar region was achieved within 3 weeks in all patients. Expansion remained stable during the 12-month study period, with a mean relapse for the entire group of 0.88 +- 0.48 mm. Morbidity was limited to mild postoperative discomfort. The results of this preliminary study indicated that surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion is a safe, simple, and relaible procedure for achieving a permanent increase in skeletal maxillary width in adults. Further study is necessary to document the three-dimension movements of the maxillary segments and long-term stability of the skeletal and dental changes. ...
The scapula is a large, flat, triangular bone with three prominent projections. The flattened triangular portion spans from the second to the seventh rib and consists of three borders (superior, lateral, and medial) and three angles (superior, inferior, and lateral). Its lateral angle is conspicuous as it forms the glenoid fossa for articulation with the head of the humerus. Its three prominent projections are the anteriorly facing coracoid process, the posterior ridge termed the spine, and the flat laterally projecting acromion that forms the lateral expansion of the spine. The plate-like body of the scapula is often so thin that it is translucent. (The program includes both true and false views of the scapula. The true views represent those views of the scapula as it would appear when viewed in its articulated position in the body. The false views represent an idealized views of its four surfaces ...

Seeing a child grow and learn is fascinating. Jack isnt saying any words yet. (Well, sort of. He has his own words for things. "Bow" is dog - seeing bows is very exciting) . But his noises have quite suddenly become more complex over the last few days. Im not holding my breath for him to talk, though, and Ill try not to worry if he doesnt do it until relatively late. Ive read that that can happen with children in multilingual environments. I also heard it from our friends in Italy, a Russian-Italian couple whose son apparently didnt start speaking until he was two, but then all at once in complete sentences and in both languages. I also read that growing up with two languages is generally no problem for kids but more than two can be confusing. We shall see. Maria and I speak our mother tongues with Jack: better for him to hear German spoken correctly by native speakers than not-quite-grammatical German with a strong English accent, or even perfectly fluent German with a slight but ...

Item# 30-5359244. This units completely unique 3D Reuleaux Full Arch FOV (field of view) abandons the typical cylinder with a new convex triangle shape. By more closely matching the natural dental arch form, this groundbreaking FOV reduces dosage by excluding areas outside the region of interest and allows a complete scan of the maxilla and/or the mandible. High resolution, 125 µm voxel images provide a clear observation of the periodontal pocket, the periodontal membrane, and the alveolar bone, as well as soft tissue such as the maxillary sinus membrane. A special dose reduction mode lowers exposure for soft tissue which reduces dosage to a mere 60% of the standard mode.. Multifunctional, it also offers panoramic and cephalometric imaging. With a total of 6 fields of view, 3D R100 is ideal for implantology as well as being suitable for periodontology, orthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, and general dentistry.. FEATURES:. ...
The identified long-range and short-range epidermal signals are combined into an incoherent feed-forward regulation of WUS expression (Fig. 5B). This motif by itself accounts for the positioning and scaling of the pattern (Fig. 5C). The short-range AHK- signal remains largely unaffected by size changes, whereas the long-range cytokinin signal scales with tissue size. As the tissue expands, cytokinin meets its concentration threshold further away from the L1 and the AHK- threshold, leading to an increase of the WUS domain. The same effect can explain the appearance of WUS in primordia as they grow (Fig. 5C) and the lateral expansion of the domains in flatter tissues by juxtaposing cell layers (cf. Figs. 2A and 3).. We use a quantitative representation of some of the most studied expression domains and molecular interactions participating in the homeostasis of the SAM and show that this regulatory network is sufficient to describe domains in wild-type and perturbed plants. We propose the ...

Last year when Maria went back to work part time, we sent Jack to a Turkish lady for daycare. Frau K (not her real initial) has five children of her own, now in their teens, and we knew as soon as we met them that Jack would be ok with her. If all children were as bright, charming and obviously well brought up as Frau Ks five I would have no serious concerns about the future of the world. Yesterday we met up with Frau Ks family for a picnic in the park. Frau K herself wears a headscarf, doesnt speak German all that fluently and, although perfectly polite and friendly to me, generally seems more comfortable talking to Maria. Her three teenage daughters are a different kettle of fish. They speak Turkish to their parents but perfect German among themselves, with no accent that I can hear. I would be quite surprised if I ever saw any of these young ladies in a headscarf. They are all wearing the same blue and yellow football shirts. Maria asks whose they are, and they name some Turkish team weve ...

SARPE or Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion is a technique in the field of orthodontics which is used to expand the maxillary arch. This technique is a combination of both surgical and orthodontic processes. This procedure is primarily done in adults whose palatal sutures have fused and cannot be expanded via other techniques. Orthodontic expansion was first described by Emersen Angell about 145 years ago. Kole in 1959 was the first person to speak about the procedure of corticotomy in adults with maxillary constriction. Brown first described the surgical technique for SARPE in 1938. Steinhauser first described the technique involving the segmental left/right split of maxilla along with placement of the graft in 1972. Skeletal Maturity or Adult Patients Fused Intermaxillary Suture Transverse maxillary hypoplasia Bilateral posterior crossbite Previous failure of use of any other expansion devices The procedure itself is part of two surgery process. Under the first surgery, SARPE is ...
The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the dentofacial effects of 1 week rapid palatal expansion (RPE) and activation-deactivation (A/D) RPE protocols with reverse headgear (RH).. Two groups, each containing 15 subjects, were included in this study. In the RPE group (seven males and eight females, 11.94 ± 1.62 years), Hyrax screws were activated every 12 hours for 1 week. At the end of this period, RPE was stopped and the patients were instructed to wear the RH. In the A/D-RPE group (seven males and eight females, 11.34 ± 1.81 years), the screws were activated every 12 hours for 1 week. Subsequently, the screws were deactivated every 12 hours for 1 week followed by activation and deactivation for the following 2 weeks. After this protocol, the patients were instructed to use the RH. A total force of 700 g was applied to both groups for 16-18 hours/day for the first 3 months, for 12 hours/day for the second 3 months, and for 6 hours/day for the second 6 months. Lateral cephalometric ...
