Methods A cohort of all men born between Jan 1 1938 and Dec 31 1988, still alive and living in Denmark, and having no diagnosis of inguinal hernia before Jan 1 1998 was established through register linkage between the Danish Civil Registration System and the National Patient Registry. First time events of inguinal hernia repair between Jan 1st 1998 and Dec 31 2008 were identified in the Danish Hernia Database. Exposure information from a Job Exposure Matrix based on expert judgement (Tine Steen Rubak, PhD thesis 2010) will be allocated to each individual based on Danish ISCO codes for each job held since 1993 obtained from Statistics Denmark. Hazard ratios will be adjusted for age, socioeconomic status, region of residence, and calendar year.. ...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate social outcome and psychiatric comorbidity of patients with idiopathic/genetic generalized epilepsies (IGEs) and its subtypes (epilepsy with generalized tonic-clonic seizures alone [EGTCS], juvenile absence epilepsy [JAE], and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy [JME]).. METHODS: A cohort of 402 adult patients with IGE from the Danish island Funen was matched with 4020 randomly selected geography-, age-, and sex-matched controls via the Danish Civil Registration System. Based on register data, we compared social status measured by cohabitant status, educational attainment, income, affiliation to labor market, and psychiatric comorbidity.. RESULTS: As compared to controls, patients with IGE had similar cohabitant status but fewer children (no children: 59.0% vs 50.9%), and lower educational level (primary school only: 46.0% vs 37.3%), employment rate (outside of workforce: 56.7% vs 46.5%), and income (low income: 32.6% vs 24.9%) (P , 0.001 for all comparisons). Having IGE was ...

We assessed the prevalence of monitoring for metabolic blood abnormalities
Cancer-specific survival estimates rely on precise and correct data on the cause of death; however, these data can be difficult to acquire, particularly in elderly patients where comorbidity is common. Furthermore, while some deaths are directly related to cancer, others are more complex, with cancer merely contributing. Another, more precise, method is to assess the relative mortality, i.e., mortality in patients compared to the general population. The aims of this study were to describe the relative mortality in soft tissue sarcoma, and to compare the relative mortality with the cancer-specific mortality. We included 1246 patients treated for soft tissue sarcoma and 6230 individually age- and sex-matched individuals from the general population. The relative mortality was estimated as rates, and rate ratios adjusted for comorbidity. Mortality rate ratios were computed using the Cox proportional hazard model for 0-5 years and 5-10 years, according to age, sex and level of comorbidity. The cancer
BACKGROUND: The Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Denmark are neighbouring Nordic countries with great ethnic, cultural, and political similarities and are relatively homogeneous. Important information about prescribing practices can be obtained by comparing the antibacterial use in these countries. The objective was to describe, compare, and analyse the use of systemic antibacterial agents in these countries during the y 1999-2011.. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Denmark on systemic antibacterial use and expressed in defined daily dosages (DDD). Prescription data were also obtained for specific age groups.. RESULTS: The total antibacterial use for the y 1999-2011 varied markedly between the 3 countries, with a mean use of 21.8 DDD/1000 inhabitants/day (DID) in Iceland, 17.7 in the Faroe Islands, and 16.3 in Denmark. The total use remained fairly constant over the years in the Faroe Islands and Iceland, whereas in Denmark it increased gradually from 13.5 DID in 1999 ...
Pediatric seizures have been linked to psychiatric disorders in childhood, but there is a paucity of large-scale population-based studies of psychiatric comorbidity in later life. This study aimed to examine the relation between childhood seizures and the risk of psychiatric disorders in adolescence and early adulthood.. Between Jan 1, 1978, and Dec 31, 2002, 1,291,679 individuals were born in Denmark and followed up in the population cohort (approximately 15 million person-years). 43,148 individuals had a history of febrile seizures, 10,355 had epilepsy, and 1,696 had both these disorders.. 83,735 (6%) cohort members were identified with at least one of the psychiatric disorders of interest. The risk of any psychiatric disorder was raised in individuals with a history of febrile seizures (hazard ratio [HR] 1·12, 95% CI 1·08-1·17), epilepsy (1·34, 1·25-1·44), or both disorders (1·50, 1·28-1·75). Excess risk of psychiatric illness associated with childhood seizures was present across a ...
Association of intake of trans fatty acids in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy with risk of preeclampsia was studied by following 67 186 pregnancies of women participating in the Danish National Birth Cohort between 1998 and 2003. Diet was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire at gestation wk 25; preeclampsia diagnosis was obtained by linkage with the Danish National Patient Registry. 1804 cases of preeclampsia and 402 cases of severe preeclampsia were identified in the cohort. Intake of trans fats decreased during the study period as a consequence of reduction in industrial trans fat intake. Intake of trans fats in the 2nd trimester was unrelated to risk of preeclampsia or severe preeclampsia. Relative risk (95% confidence interval; P, trend) of preeclampsia and severe preeclampsia comparing top to bottom quintiles of trans fat intake were 0.95 (0.81; 1.11, 0.33) and 1.07 (0.78; 1.48, 0.92), respectively. It is concluded that 2nd trimester intake of trans fats is unrelated to risk of ...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that imposes a great burden on the patient, the patients family and society. However, we lack information about the total disease burden at a national level, especially regarding costs before and after diagnosis and the consequences for spouses. We aimed to estimate the factual direct and indirect costs of ALS in a national sample. Using records from the Danish National Patient Registry (1998-2009), 2,394 patients with ALS were identified and subsequently compared with 9,575 randomly chosen control subjects matched for age, gender and geographic area/civil status. Direct costs, including frequencies of primary and sector contacts and procedures, and medication from primary and secondary sectors, were obtained from the Danish Ministry of Health, the Danish Medicines Agency, and the National Health Security. Indirect costs included labour supply and social transfer payments, and were based on income data derived from ...
The British occupation of the Faroe Islands in World War II, also known as Operation Valentine, was implemented immediately following the German invasion of Denmark and Norway. In April 1940, the United Kingdom occupied the strategically important Faroe Islands to preempt a German invasion. British troops left shortly after the end of the war. At the time of the occupation, the Faroe Islands had the status of an amt (county) of Denmark. Following the invasion and occupation of Denmark on 9 April 1940, British forces launched Operation Valentine to occupy the Faroe Islands. On 11 April, Winston Churchill - then First Lord of the Admiralty - announced to the House of Commons that the Faroe Islands would be occupied: We are also at this moment occupying the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark and which are a strategic point of high importance, and whose people showed every disposition to receive us with warm regard. We shall shield the Faroe Islands from all the severities of war and establish ...

In this data resource review, researchers at several Danish hospitals discuss how the country puts two laboratory information systems (LISs) that collect routine biomarker data to use, as well as how it can be accessed for research. The researchers explain how data is collected into the LISs, how data quality is managed, and how it is used, providing several real-world examples. They then discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their data as they relate to epidemiology, as well as how the data can be accessed. They emphasize that access to data on routine biomarkers expands the detailed biological and clinical information available on patients in the Danish healthcare system, while the full potential is enabled through linkage to other Danish healthcare registries.. ...

Importance With increasing prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) and its manifestation in most countries, together with the supporting evidence of the progression to other atopic phenotypes, AD has developed into a worldwide public health concern. The presence of the disease of has increased since the 1950s, but some recent studies suggest a stationary or decreasing trend. Objective To analyze a nationwide health register based on prescription data to determine the incidence rate (IR) of AD in an entire pediatric population. Design, Setting, and Participants All children resident in Norway younger than 6 years from January 1, 2009, through December 31, 2015, were included in this cohort study. Medical diagnoses and disease-specific medications were used as a proxy for identifying children with AD in this population-based prescription registry study. The prescription study was terminated in 2016. The total number of 295 286 disease-specific prescriptions was analyzed from August 2016 through ...

The Berlingske Tidende newspaper reports that of the 5.5 million citizens in Denmark, 1.8 million of them are registered on Facebook. This represents 34 percent of the entire population, placing it slightly past Canada, where 33 percent of the country has logged onto Facebook.. In a survey conducted by the IT company Komfo, they discovered that most of Denmarks Facebook users are middle-aged or elderly. This could present some special challenges for Facebook in Denmark, as the older users demand greater quality of content, claims Komfo chief executive Rasmus Moller-Nielsen.. Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen made thorough use of Facebook during his 2007 election campaign, claiming more online friends than his opponent in the race, Helle Thorning Schmidt of the Social Democrats. Facebook was created in 2004, but only became really popular in Denmark a couple of years later. But in the last year or two the social networking site has really exploded in the country.. ...

DENMARK Denmark is a thousand-year-old kingdom with a democratic constitution. The four-and-a-half million Danes are merely a drop in the bucket compared to the worlds population, but Denmark is a large country if we include Greenland, the enormous Arctic island. (Without Greenland, Denmark is but a speck on the globe) The fewer we are, the more we have to buckle down and do our bit for the worlds welfare and culture. A small nation cannot afford to waste time on inferiority complexes, in a defeatist sense of the word. Our ships sail the seven seas and our fishermen haul up an abundance of fish from narrow straits and oceans. Our foreign trade exceeds that of most countries. Our agriculture and industry are dynamic producers. We participate enthusiastically in international work, whether it be of a political or a research nature or assistance to the developing countries. We are a member of the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and several other international organizations. ...
The government said on Wednesday that it would cull all minks - up to 17 million - to prevent human contagion with a mutated coronavirus, which authorities said could be more resistant against future vaccines.. Seven municipalities in northern Denmark, home to most of the countrys mink farms, will face restrictions on movement across county lines, while restaurants and bars will be closed, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told a press conference.. Schools will be closed and all public transport will be shut until Dec 3., she said, encouraging inhabitants in the region to stay within their municipality and get tested.. For Denmarks mink pelt industry, which racked up exports of around $800 million last year and employs 4,000 people, the cull could amount to a death knell. The industry association for Danish breeders called the move a black day for Denmark.. Of course, we must not be the cause of a new pandemic. We do not know the professional basis for this assessment and risk … but the ...

This is a collection of civil registration records for Mexico. Records, such as birth, marriages, and deaths, are organized by state and then by municipality/city. Earlier records were handwritten in narrative style; later records were handwritten in formatted registers. The text of these records is in Spanish. Civil records in Mexico cover about 90 to 95% of the population. Beginning in 1859, the Mexican government began requiring births, marriages, and deaths to be recorded by civil authorities on a municipality/district level. Although these records are a great source of genealogical information, they are not complete as civil registration wasnt strictly enforced in Mexico until 1867 and people did not always comply. For this reason, church registers must be used alongside the civil records. The civil records of Mexico have been preserved relatively well. Only some of the older registers may have some physical damage; however, in general they are in good condition to extract genealogical ...
HealthDay News - Migraines in pregnant women are associated with an increased risk for pregnancy-associated hypertension disorders as well as an increased risk for a variety of adverse outcomes in the newborn, according to a study published online May 8 in Headache. Nils Skajaa, from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and colleagues used Danish population registries (2005 to 2012) to evaluate associations between maternal migraine and risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes in the mother as well as birth, neonatal, and postnatal outcomes in the offspring. Analysis included 22,841 pregnancies among women with migraine and 228,324 matched pregnancies among women without migraine. The researchers found that migraine was associated with an increased risk for pregnancy-associated hypertension disorders (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR], 1.50) and miscarriage (aPR, 1.10). There was an association between migraine and increased prevalence of low birth weight (aPR, 1.14), preterm birth (aPR, 1.21), and ...

Low levels of plasma transthyretin (TTR), a protein encoded by the TTR gene, were associated with a higher incident heart failure (HF) in the general Danish population, a retrospective analysis found.. In two cohorts that spanned nearly 17,000 people, transthyretin levels at or below the 5th percentile were associated with incident HF compared with levels in the 5th to 95th percentile, reported Anne Tybaerg-Hansen, MD, DMSc, of the Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark and co-authors in JAMA Cardiology.. Genetic variants in TTR also were associated with lower transthyretin concentrations and higher risk of incident HF.. The main novel findings of this study are that lower plasma concentrations and genetically determined transthyretin concentrations are both associated with a higher risk of incident HF in the general population, Tybaerg-Hansen and colleagues wrote.. These results support an association between low transthyretin concentration as a marker of tetramer instability and increased ...

Heavy occupational lifting is prevalent in the general working population and is sparsely reported to associate with hypertension, especially among older and hypertensive workers. We investigated if heavy occupational lifting is associated with hypertension and blood pressure (BP) in both cross-sectional and prospective study designs in the Copenhagen General Population Study, stratified by age, and use of anti-hypertensives. Participation was conducted following the declaration of Helsinki and approved by the ethical committee (H-KF-01-144/01). By multivariable logistic and linear regression models, we investigated the association between heavy occupational lifting and hypertension, in a cross-sectional design (n = 67,363), using anti-hypertensives or BP ≥140/≥90 mmHg as outcome, and in a prospective design (n = 7020) with an above-median change in systolic BP (SBP) from baseline to follow-up and/or a shift from no use to use of anti-hypertensives as outcome, with and without stratification by age
Endometriosis was associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.37-2.05), with the risk being highest for very preterm birth (AOR 1.91, 95% CI 1.16-3.15). Compared with unaffected women, women with endometriosis also had an increased risk of pre-eclampsia (AOR 1.37, 95% CI 1.06-1.77) and cesarean section (AOR 1.83, 95% CI 1.60-2.09). Assisted reproductive technology did not explain these findings. No association was found between endometriosis and postpartum hemorrhage or SGA ...
Patients who suffer from REM sleep behavior disorder have altered blood flow in the brain, which can lead to a lack of oxygen in the brain tissue. In the long term, this may cause symptoms of Parkinsons disease. This is shown by research from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.
We found no indication that being unemployed during pregnancy benefits or endangers the health of the child. Within the subgroups of unemployed women, we observed that women receiving unemployment and sickness or maternity benefits were at higher risk for some adverse pregnancy outcomes.
The Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) advised people not to use Inno Pharma vitamin D3-dråber - sold by health food organization Helsam or pharmacy chain Matas - in a warning letter published on July 29.. An authority spokeswoman told us Due to a calculation error the company Inno Pharma has produced a vitamin D food supplement with a 75 times higher dose than intended adding that production has been stopped and the sold products has been recalled. She also confirmed that several young children have been hospitalized as a result of ingesting this particular food supplement. According to the organization 87 of the 150 children known to have used the super strength product had elevated vitamin D levels.. High vitamin D levels may result in a condition called hypercalcemia - high blood calcium - which is known to interfere with normal cardiac functioning. It is also linked to the formation of kidney stones.. According to Sundhedsstyrelsen, 74 of the children tested ...
We know for quite a while that the currently valid exposure limits for radiofrequency radiation solely protect the interests of the mobile communication industry, but not the health of the mobile phone users. Applying the methods of institutional corruption the industry succeeded to ensure its acceptance till today by numerous European countries including Germany [1]. And because of profit maximization the true state of research is withheld from the people and the health risks, they are exposed to, are cynically accepted.. Read full documant here. ...
Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a rare form of autoimmune hemolytic anemia with limited epidemiological and clinical data. We used the Danish National Patient Registries to examine CAD occurrence and risk of thromboembolic events (TEs) and mortality in CAD patients compared with a matched cohort from the general population in Denmark. We identified 72 patients diagnosed with CAD and 720 matched controls between 1999 and 2013. For 2013, the most recent year of study, crude incidence of CAD was 0.18 per 100 000 inhabitants per year and prevalence was 1.26 per 100 000 inhabitants. Risk of TEs was higher in the CAD patient cohort than in the comparison cohort at 1 year (7.2% of CAD patients had TEs vs 1.9% of comparisons), 3 years (9.0% vs 5.3%), and 5 years (11.5% vs 7.8%) after the index date. The median survival was 8.5 years. CAD patients had increased mortality compared with the general population cohort (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.84; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-3.06; P 5 .020), ...

N2 - Background: HIV can cause an imbalance of T lymphocytes, which may contribute to the onset of psoriasis. However, the association of HIV with incident psoriasis has not been extensively studied. Objectives: The aim of this nationwide population-based cohort study was to determine the association of HIV with incident psoriasis. Methods: Since January 1, 2000, we identified adult people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. A control cohort without HIV infection, matched for age and sex, was selected for comparison. All patients were followed until December 31, 2012, and observed for the occurrence of psoriasis. The ...
OBJECTIVES: To assess the associations between both uric acid levels and hyperuricaemia, with ischaemic heart disease and blood pressure, and to explore the potentially confounding role of body mass index. DESIGN: Mendelian randomisation analysis, using variation at specific genes (SLC2A9 (rs7442295) as an instrument for uric acid; and FTO (rs9939609), MC4R (rs17782313), and TMEM18 (rs6548238) for body mass index). SETTING: Two large, prospective cohort studies in Denmark. PARTICIPANTS: We measured levels of uric acid and related covariables in 58,072 participants from the Copenhagen General Population Study and 10,602 from the Copenhagen City Heart Study, comprising 4890 and 2282 cases of ischaemic heart disease, respectively. MAIN OUTCOME: Blood pressure and prospectively assessed ischaemic heart disease. RESULTS: Estimates confirmed known observational associations between plasma uric acid and hyperuricaemia with risk of ischaemic heart disease and diastolic and systolic blood pressure. ...
Denmark. Methadone/Buprenorphine Treatment: available. Since 1996 general practitioners are no longer allowed to prescribe methadone to drug users. Methadone treatment must be provided by clinics run by the Danish counties. The county methadone clinics are prepared to accept foreign patients for temporary treatment. Patients needing continued methadone/buprenorphine treatment in Denmark are advised to ask their home prescribers to contact one of the county social and health care authorities in Denmark or the Health Services Department at the Ministry of Health (Mr. Mogens J rgensen or Mr. Steen Hartvig Hansen). Another useful contact is the Danish Drug User Union (BrugerForeningen).. Importation of Methadone/Buprenorphine: possible. It is allowed to bring a 30 days supply of methadone/buprenorphine into Denmark. Travellers must carry with them a letter from their home prescriber which clearly supports their need for the medication. It should be noted that residents from one of the EU ...
Tamoxifen reduces recurrence risk among women treated for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Its effectiveness partly depends on metabolic activation via cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6). Some medications compromise CYP2D6 activity and may lower plasma concentrations of active tamoxifen metabolites. We studied the association between concurrent use of tamoxifen and CYP2D6-inhibiting medications and breast cancer recurrence among Danish women diagnosed with early-stage, estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Using the Danish Breast Cancer Cooperative Group Registry, we identified 366 cases with local or distant breast cancer recurrence and 366 matched breast cancer controls. We ascertained concurrent prescription of CYP2D6-inhibiting medications during tamoxifen treatment by linking to the national prescription database covering all Danish pharmacies. We computed the breast cancer recurrence odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval for each medication. The pooled recurrence OR was null ...

The considered automated medication systems were a patient-specific automated medication system (psAMS), a non-patient-specific automated medication system (npsAMS), and a complex automated medication system (cAMS). The economic evaluation used original effect and cost data from prospective, controlled, before-and-after studies of medication systems implemented at a Danish hematological ward and an acute medical unit. Effectiveness was described as the proportion of clinical and procedural error opportunities that were associated with one or more errors. An error was defined as a deviation from the electronic prescription, from standard hospital policy, or from written procedures. The cost assessment was based on 6-month standardization of observed cost data. The model-based comparative cost-effectiveness analyses were conducted with system-specific assumptions of the effect size and costs in scenarios with consumptions of 15,000, 30,000, and 45,000 doses per 6-month period.. RESULTS ...

The Church of Denmark (Den danske folkekirke) is state-supported and, according to statistics from January 2006, accounts for about 80% of Denmarks religious affiliation. Denmark has had religious freedom guaranteed since 1849 by the Constitution,[13] and numerous other religions are officially recognised,[14] including several Christian denominations, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu and other congregations as well as Forn Siðr, a revival of Scandinavian pagan tradition.[14] The Department of Ecclesiastical Affairs recognises roughly a hundred religious congregations for tax and legal purposes such as conducting wedding ceremonies. Islam is the second largest religion in Denmark. For historical reasons, there is a formal distinction between approved (godkendte) and recognised (anerkendte) congregations of faith.[14] The latter include 11 traditional denominations, such as Roman Catholics, the Reformed Church, the Mosaic Congregation, Methodists and Baptists, some of whose privileges in the ...

This study, based on data from all 89 829 women in the DNBC, displayed a social pattern in the risk of spontaneous abortion. Educational level and income were inversely associated with the risk of spontaneous abortion.. Apart from maternal age, no lifestyle risk factors for spontaneous abortion are well established and few studies have examined the association between socioeconomic position and risk of spontaneous abortion. A few previous studies have reported an association between socioeconomic position and spontaneous abortion7-10 when socioeconomic position was measured by educational level and labour market attachment, and others found no such association.11-14 There are several possible explanations for this. Some studies are small with a diminished possibility of detecting a smaller association. Furthermore, two of these studies adjust for earlier spontaneous abortion in their analyses.11 ,12 Previous spontaneous abortion is associated with a 60% higher risk of spontaneous abortion,22 ...

This study examines the joint and separate influence of birth weight and body mass in young adulthood on subsequent coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. A cohort of 9,143 men born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1953, for whom information on birth weight and body weight and height around age 19 years were retrieved from birth certificates and conscript records, respectively, were followed from 1978 until 2005 (between age 25 and 52 years) for incident fatal and non-fatal CHD. Data on CHD were obtained through record linkage to the Cause of Death Registry and the National Patient Registry. During follow-up, a total of 475 men had a CHD diagnosis. Men with low birth weight, high body mass index (BMI) at age 19, a father from the working class, and low educational level at age 19 had an increased risk for CHD. Birth weight was inversely associated with CHD only in men with BMI of 25 kg/m(2) or above. Adjustment for childhood social circumstances and educational status at age 19 had minor influence on the ...

We linked information on all men in couples with fertility problems who had a semen analysis done at the Sperm Analysis Laboratory in Copenhagen during 1963-95 (n=32 442) with data in the Danish Cancer Registry, which holds information on all cases of cancer in the Danish population from 1943 to 1995.15 Men who visited the laboratory for other reasons (such as semen analysis after vasectomy) were excluded from the analysis. The Copenhagen laboratory is one of several public semen analysis laboratories in Denmark and examines semen samples mostly from men in the area of Copenhagen. Men are referred to the clinic by general practitioners and urologists, and the investigations are paid for through the public health system. Men with cancer before the date of semen analysis were excluded. For men who had multiple semen tests only their first test was used in the analysis. Similarly, only the first cancer diagnosis in a given man was included in the analysis. The methods used for analysis of semen ...
Editors note: This is Part Four of a recent four-part series by Lynne Terry on how Salmonella in poultry is handled in Denmark and the U.S. Part One is here, Part Two is here, and Part Three is here. The series is being republished by permission from The Oregonian.). Denmarks journey from a surge of Salmonella infections to the near eradication of the bacteria in chicken is a success story that could not easily be replicated in the United States, American poultry experts say.. The U.S. chicken industry is too big, they claim, and the reforms would be too costly, causing sticker shock in grocery stores. There also is no will among industry, regulators or retailers in the U.S. to follow Denmark and other European countries that have declared a zero tolerance for Salmonella in chicken.. It is very impressive, but its not feasible in the United States, said Scott Russell, professor of poultry processing at the University of Georgia.. U.S. regulators recognize that Salmonella poses a big ...

Objectives. The present study aims to compare the direction and magnitude of sex differences in mortality and major health dimensions across Denmark, Japan and the US. Methods. The Human Mortality Database was used to examine sex differences in age-specific mortality rates. The Danish twin surveys, the Danish 1905-Cohort Study, the Health and Retirement Study, and the Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging were used to examine sex differences in health. Results. Men had consistently higher mortality rates at all ages in all three countries, but they also had a substantial advantage in handgrip strength compared with the same-aged women. Sex differences in activities of daily living (ADL) became pronounced among individuals aged 85+ in all three countries. Depression levels tended to be higher in women, particularly, in Denmark and the HRS, and only small sex differences were observed in the immediate recall test and Mini-Mental State Exam. Conclusions. The present study revealed ...
THURSDAY, Feb. 1, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- Migraine is associated with elevated risks of myocardial infarction, stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic), venous thromboembolism, and atrial fibrillation or flutter, according to a study published online Jan. 31 in The BMJ.. Kasper Adelborg, M.D., Ph.D., from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and colleagues conducted a nationwide, population-based cohort study to examine the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral artery disease, venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, and heart failure among 51,032 patients with migraine and 510,320 matched controls from the general population.. The researchers found that for the migraine cohort versus the general population, the cumulative incidences per 1,000 people were 25 versus 17 for myocardial infarction, 45 versus 25 for ischemic stroke, 11 versus 6 for hemorrhagic stroke, 13 versus 11 for peripheral artery disease, 27 versus 18 for venous thromboembolism, 47 versus 34 for ...
Little research on assistive technologies for families of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has investigated the long-term impact, after the assistive technology is returned to the researchers. In this paper, we report the outcomes of a follow-up study, conducted four-weeks after a field study of 13 children with ADHD and their families who used an assistive technology designed to help establish and change family practices. We show that some of the positive effects on parent frustration level and conflict level around morning and bedtime routines that we observed in the first phase of the study, continued even after the study period, when the technology was no longer available. We furthermore present insights into family practices in families of children with ADHD and how these could lead to unexpected challenges and implications related to the adoption, use, and outcome of the assistive technology ...
The investigators found that patients who started treatment with non-aspirin NSAIDs were at greater risk of experiencing atrial fibrillation or flutter when compared with patients who did not use NSAIDs. The increased risk differed depending on the drugs used: there was about a 40 percent increased risk for those who used non-selective NSAIDs and 70 percent among those who used COX-2 inhibitors. The research team, led by Professor Henrik Toft Sorensen at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, also identified certain groups at greatest risk for atrial fibrillation in the study. They included older people and patients with chronic kidney disease or rheumatoid arthritis who started treatment with COX-2 inhibitors. Both non-selective NSAIDS and COX-2 inhibitors have been associated with a number of side effects (e.g., gastrointestinal problems) and serious long-term risks, including an increased chance of a stroke and heart attack. Atrial fibrillation has been linked to risks as well, including ...

Background: The prevalence of asthma and wheeze is increasing. Aim: To study the annual and cumulative prevalence of asthma and wheeze in 5-y-old Danish children. Methods: We obtained data on 3052 (82.0% of eligible) Danish children by a postal parental questionnaire including ISAAC questions regarding respiratory symptoms and our own questions on sociodemography and tobacco exposure. Results: Wheeze ever was reported in 38.3%, doctor-diagnosed asthma ever in 10.5%, childhood bronchitis ever in 30.0%, current wheeze (,12 mo) in 19.7%, and being severe (,3 episodes) in 3.9% of the children. Current wheeze was associated with male gender (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.35-1.96), low parental post-primary education (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.02-1.63 for ,3 y vs ≥3 y) and current maternal smoking (OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.39-2.04). Severe current wheeze was recognized as asthma in six and childhood bronchitis in three of 10 cases. Nearly all diagnosed asthmatics had suffered wheeze, two-thirds ...
Right now the evidence that we have doesnt suggest that this variant is in any way different in the way it behaves, he said in Geneva.. Peter Ben Embarek, a WHO expert on food safety, said that initial studies on pigs, chickens and cattle show that these species are not at all susceptible in the same way that mink are, for example. So even if these animals were infected, they would not be able to sustain and spread the disease in the same way.. Britain on Friday said that people coming from Denmark must self-isolate for 14 days, adding the country to a list of countries it deems risky.. Denmark, the worlds largest mink fur exporter, produces an estimated 17 million furs per year. Kopenhagen Fur, a cooperative of 1,500 Danish breeders, accounts for 40 per cent of the global mink production with most of its exports heading to China and Hong Kong.. ...

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Survival rates for four major cancers diagnosed between 1995 and 2007 are higher in Australia, Canada, and Sweden than in Britain and Denmark, according to an international study published on Wednesday. The difference in survival rates for breast, ovarian, colorectal and lung cancer are largely due to tumors being detected later in Britain and Denmark, researchers said, which makes the cancers more difficult to treat. These data will be crucial in helping all the partners involved improve their cancer outcomes, said Mike Richards, the British governments national cancer director for England, who worked on the study with Michel Coleman of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and 80 others. The study was funded by the UK governments department of health and the charity Cancer Research UK.Richards said his department was already working on improving earlier diagnosis by giving doctors more direct access to key diagnostic tests, and will launch a campaign next month

Forty percent of a Danish population of women with previous diet-treated GDM had developed diabetes at a median of 10 years after pregnancy. This incidence is more than ten times higher than in the 30- to 60-year-old female background population (19). The risk of developing diabetes after GDM has more than doubled during the last decade. Thus, in contrast to previous studies from Scandinavia (6,20), where relatively low incidences of diabetes were found in women with previous GDM, the incidence is now comparable to studies from other parts of the world (5). The most obvious reason is the increase in BMI before and after index pregnancy found in the present study, probably reflecting a global epidemic (21). Accordingly, it has recently been found that the increased incidence of IGT and diabetes in a Danish cohort of 60-year-old women and men could be fully explained by the increasing BMI (22). It is therefore not surprising that we now find overweight and obesity to be significant risk factors ...

Vitamin D deficiency is common among otherwise healthy pregnant women and may have consequences for them as well as the early development and long-term health of their children. The importance of maternal and neonatal vitamin D status on later health has not been widely studied. The D-tect is a project financed by the Danish Council for Strategic research, comprising a battery of observational studies on associations between exposure to/status of vitamin D early in life and risk of various diseases later in life. All the studies use data from the Danish National registers. The fact that mandatory fortification of margarine with vitamin D in Denmark was cancelled in 1985, and thus, children born before and after 1985 differed by prenatal exposure to extra vitamin D, is utilized. Additionally, neonatal vitamin D status is measured using dried blood spots (PKU cards) kept in the The Danish Newborn Screening Biobank.. Homepage: www.d-tectingdisease.dk ...
Following the first ever case of bluetongue in Denmark during late 2007, further outbreaks were observed in Denmark during 2008, despite vaccination against bluetongue virus (BTV) serotype 8 (BTV-8) in the southern part of the country. In total, 15 separate outbreaks of infection were identified, mostly as a result of clinical suspicions but also because of surveillance of bulk milk samples. These outbreaks led to extensions of the original vaccination zone planned for 2008. Blood samples from clinical suspects were analysed using ELISA and real-time RT-PCR assays for the presence of anti-BTV antibodies and viral RNA, respectively. A newly infected calf from the primary outbreak in 2008 was studied for a period of three months, during which time it seroconverted to BTV, but the presence of viral RNA in its blood was maintained throughout this time. Each outbreak was caused by BTV-8, as determined by a serotype-specific real-time RT-PCR assay. Furthermore, the nucleotide sequence of a portion of ...
The ignorance is breathtaking. I lived and worked in Denmark and I can categorically tell you that to compare a homogeneous nation of 5 million to a multi-cultural nation of 320 million is sheer stupidity. Do you know that in Denmark, people dont lock their doors, leave their bicycles unlocked at the bus stop while they are at work and walk unmolested in any section of there town and at all hours? Do you know why? Because they all come from the same background, know their neighbors and the neighbors parents and grand parents, and the all trust each other. In other words, this aint Chicago and what works in Denmark would never, ever work in Chicago. So, get off the ignorant parroting of Bernies party line, because it just is not true. Anyone who has lived there understands that. If you want to bring Denmark norms of behavoir to Chicago, first get rid of all the people in Chicago and replace them with people from Denmark because those people are what makes Denmark work, not their system of ...
