Result: The results showed that 38.5 percent (154) of the women received antenatal care, 32.3 percent (129) of the women received delivery services while 48.3 percent (193) received postnatal care services. In the logistic regression model, reduced income level was associated with decreased use of antenatal care (OR=0.1, P,0.05). In assisted delivery, increased distance to the health facility was associated with reduced use (OR=0.1, P ,0.05). In postnatal care, reduced education level of the respondent was found to be associated to decreased use of postnatal services (OR=0.51, P,0.05). Increased maternal age was associated with increased utilization of maternal health services (OR=2.1, P,0.05). On the other hand, decision making roles by the male spouse alone or both partners was associated with increased use of postnatal services (OR=4.5,P,0.05 ...
New York City is the hot spot of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. This paper merges information on the number of tests and the number of infections at the New York City zip code level with demographic and socioeconomic information from the decennial census and the American Community Surveys. People residing in poor or immigrant neighborhoods were less likely to be tested; but the likelihood that a test was positive was larger in those neighborhoods, as well as in neighborhoods with larger households or predominantly black populations. The rate of infection in the population depends on both the frequency of tests and on the fraction of positive tests among those tested. The non-randomness in testing across New York City neighborhoods indicates that the observed correlation between the rate of infection and the socioeconomic characteristics of a community tells an incomplete story of how the pandemic evolved in a congested urban setting. ...
Sentence Examples for demography. A new report published this week highlights trends in the religious demography of Northern Ireland using a variety of surveys from 1989 to 2004. How to use demography in a sentence is shown in this page. Check the meaning of demography.
Since Achille Guillard coined the term demography in his work „Eléments de statistique humaine ou démographie comparée (Paris, 1855), the world population has doubled two times in less than 150 years, and postindustrial countries like Germany and Japan are facing the comprehensive challenges of demographic change and a high median age. Matthias Koch, Claus D. Harmer, and Florian Coulmas are compiling within the scope of the project Glossary of Demography a trilingual glossary of terms and a web-based database that will be the biggest thesaurus in the field of demography and population sciences in each one of the three languages. The contents of the glossary will reflect the interdisciplinary character of the subject as an ancillary science that has developed rapidly. This is also evidenced by the diversity of subjects such as political demography, social demography, economic demography, paleodemography and historical demography, mathematical demography, population geography, and ...

I looked at his maps and immediately drew the conclusion that race was a key factor. Minority groups tend to cluster near the centers of almost every city of any size in the U.S. Professor Rodden did not mention this in his article, however, and I had a good deal of difficulty accessing his maps online because they loaded very slowly. Perhaps that was because Emily Badger and Quoctrung Bui of the NYTimes Upshot section were busily tapping into the data to draw those same conclusions. The map below uses Roddens data to track the increasingly strong relationship between population density and voting patterns. Democrats do better in the denser city centers and Republicans do better in the less dense suburbs. As a result of white flight over the years, the dense city centers have increasingly become ethnic enclaves, while the suburbs are predominantly white (although not as white as they used to be). These spatial demographic patterns are in play in the current presidential election, just as they ...
While the geopolitics dimension routinely sees most volatility from year to year, demography is much more stable. As before, we did not form an expert panel on demographics. And yet, those who follow the other dimensions are acutely aware of the importance demography holds for how a number of outcomes will be resolved in coming years. This slow pace of change makes the job of demographic policy analysis more subtle and challenging, but does not reduce its importance compared to other dimensions of change.. This makes a retrospective view valuable. 2015 marks 70 years since the end of WWII. Over this period the world Jewish population increased from 11 million to 14.2 million (or an addition of approximately one-third). Moreover, in each of the last seven decades there has been a rise in the number of Jews, with an especially salient increase in the last decade (between 2005 and 2015). These estimates of the Jewish population combine the objective definition of halachic criteria in Israel and ...

The title of this book doesn´t only sound exciting - it really is! Firstly, that´s because it´s all about your future and secondly because pupils from Bielefeld were involved in producing the book and a lot of experts give their opinions in it. The book is a richly illustrated source of knowledge and encourages kids to become active themselves. The subject of demography is explained in a way that´s easy to understand and the town of Bielefeld is shown as an example for projects which can be adapted for other towns, cities and communities. In the book, you get to know the 12 to 13-year-old pupils who worked hard in school projects on the subject of demography as well as taking part in How do we want to live workshop on the future, where creative proposals were produced. You can see interesting suggestions for activities to join, with corresponding, very original illustrations by Rebecca Schmücker. Our tip - just have a look inside!. Unsere Zukunft. Meine Stadt ...

The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of drug use, and how morbidity, use of health services, self-evaluated health, demographic pattern and lifestyle characteristics influence drug use in a general population. The sample included 400 households randomly selected from two provinces (Western Cape and Limpopo). Results showed that 29% of the medicines used were not prescribed by a health professional. The numbers of households keeping antibiotics were 11.3%, analgesics 26.8%, steroids 1.0%, and vitamins 6.0%. Most respondents (62.1%) indicated that they had obtained these medicines free of charge, while 25.1% paid in the range of 1 to 25 Rand and 12.8% paid above 25 rand for their medicines. Most participants indicated that they have access to a health facility within 10km of their residence where they could obtain medicines, could be reached within 30 minutes, and it would cost less than 5 Rand for transport to reach the facility. On the management of childhood diarrhea, most respondents
H/SS 124. Problems in Historical Demography. 9 units (3-0-6); first term. Birth, marriage, and death-the most basic events in peoples lives-are inextricably linked to larger economic and social phenomena. An understanding of these basic events can thus shed light on the economic and social world inhabited by people in the past. In this course students will be introduced to the sources and methods used by historical demographers to construct demographic measures for past populations. In addition, the course will cover a broad range of problems in historical demography, including mortality crises, fertility control, infant mortality, and the role of economic and social institutions in demographic change. While the emphasis is on societies in the past, there will be some discussion of modern demographic trends in various parts of the world. Not offered 2016-17. ...
This paper develops a tractable two-country model with life-cycle structure to investigate analytically and quantitatively three potential determinants of the U.S. external imbalances in the last three decades: productivity growth, demographic factors, and fiscal policy. The results suggest that (1) productivity growth differentials are the main driving force at high frequencies, (2) the different evolution of demographic factors across countries accounts for a large portion of the long-run trend, and (3) fiscal policy plays, at best, a minor role. The main prediction of the analysis is that among industrialized countries, capital should generally be expected to flow toward relatively young and rapidly growing economies. In addition, the paper shows that international demographic trends might be partly responsible for the recent declining pattern of the world real interest rate and therefore shed new light on the real side of the interest rate conundrum ...
Demography estimates and explains population dynamics for a given geographic area by describing changing patterns of fertility, mortality and migration.
Demographic trends have a strong inertia since they depend for the coming decades on births already registered. However, demographic projections with a 50-year horizon are not an exact science: behaviours can sometimes change more rapidly than expected and diseases such as Covid-19, conflicts or migration can substantially alter the situation. With this caveat in mind, these projections are very useful in preparing for the future.. For a while Europeans are having fewer children than before. With an average of 1.55 children per woman in 2018, Europe is far from the rate of 2.1 children, which is necessary to stabilise European population. Since 2012, deaths exceed births, which means that without migration from outside Europe, our population would already have started to decline.. The EU now has a population of 447 million. According to Eurostat projections, this figure is expected to reach 449 million around 2025, before declining from 2030 onwards to 424 million in 2070. All this is ...

Over the last decades, family structure and family dynamics have undergone tremendous changes. In family demography, these changes are typically interpreted as the consequences of deep transformations in values, attitudes and norms. These are defined and measured at the level of the individual, typically using a questionnaire, and, when aggregated, they are usually interpreted either as characteristics of a population - for instance in cross-national comparisons - or as characteristics of different groups within a country, say men and women, the less educated and the well-educated, and so on.. Although these approaches have proven fruitful, they leave aside the formal context within which actors must make the decisions and the choices that will lead to demographic events such as entering in a conjugal relationship, leaving one or having a child. Although these choices and decisions are without any doubt rooted in economic contexts, influenced by individuals values and attitudes, and conditioned ...

Classical models of epidemics by Ross and McKendrick have to be revisited in order to take into account the demography (fecundity, mortality and migration) both of host and vector populations and also the diffusion and mutation of infectious agents. The classical models are supposing the populations involved in the infectious disease to be constant during the epidemic wave, but the presently observed pandemics show that the duration of their spread during months or years imposes to take into account the host and vector population changes, and also the transient or permanent migration and diffusion of hosts (susceptible or infected), as well as those of vectors and infectious agents. One example is presented concerning the malaria in Mali.

It is proposed to incorporate unauthorised arrivals into population estimates from the release of the 2001 Census-based population estimates onwards. Unauthorised arrivals are proposed to be included after they have been in Australia for 12 months, or at the time of their release (or escape) into the community, whatever is earlier. Unauthorised arrivals who are removed from Australia within 12 months will not be included in population estimates. While the number of unauthorised arrivals is relatively small, there has been a sharp increase in such arrivals in recent years. Their inclusion in population estimates will assist in maintaining the accuracy of these estimates. ...

If we have learned anything from the recent outpouring of empirical growth equations is that life is far too complex to expect unconditional convergence among all countries and at all times. This fact motivates two questions. First, why has it taken economists so long to learn the same lesson from the Kuznets Curve debate? No economist should expect an unconditional Kuznets Curve to emerge from the growth experience of all countries and at all times. The industrial revolutionary forces thought to have an impact on inequality can be offset or reinforced by demography, skill supply and globalization. This paper assesses the role of globalization and demography via mass migrations. Second, why has it taken economists so long to learn that demography influences growth? When treated properly, demography can be shown to have a significant impact on GDP per capita growth. The answers to these two questions are sought by looking at inequality and growth experience in the Old World, the New ...
The ambition of universal health coverage entails estimation of the number, type and distribution of health workers required to meet the population need for health services. The demography of the population, including anticipated or estimated changes, is a factor in determining the universal needs for health and well-being. Demography is concerned with the size, breakdown, age and gender structure and dynamics of a population. The same science, and its robust methodologies, is equally applicable to the demography of the health workforce itself. For example, a large percentage of the workforce close to retirement will impact availability, a geographically mobile workforce has implications for health coverage, and gender distribution in occupations may have implications for workforce acceptability and equity of opportunity. In a world with an overall shortage of health workers, and the expectation of increasing need as a result of both population growth in the global south and population ageing in the

This paper illustrates the demographers perspective of labor force analysis and shows how recent methodological developments in demography, in particular in multiregional demography, can fruitfully be applied to manpower studies. First, curves of age-specific labor force participation rates are investigated and it is shown how their universal features enable one to describe the schedules by a limited number of parameters. Next, an increment-decrement table of working life is developed and compared with the conventional technique of working life table construction. Finally, an improved labor force projection model is presented.. ...
