The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Volodymyr Yelchenko (Ukraine):. The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the most recent ballistic missile launches conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on 11 February 2017 and 19 October 2016. These launches are in grave violation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's international obligations under United Nations Security Council resolutions 1718 (2006), 1874 (2009), 2087 (2013), 2094 (2013), 2270 (2016) and 2321 (2016).. The members of the Security Council deplore all the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ballistic missile activities, including these launches, noting that such activities contribute to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's development of nuclear weapons delivery systems and increase tension. The members of the Security Council further regretted that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is diverting resources to the pursuit of ballistic ...

Background The concept of food insecurity encompasses three dimensions. One of these dimensions, the access component of household food insecurity is measured through the use of the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). Despite its application in Ethiopia and other similar developing countries, its performance is still poorly explored. Our study aims to evaluate the validity of the HFIAS in Ethiopia. Methods We conducted repeated cross-sectional studies in urban and rural villages of the Butajera District in southern Ethiopia. The validation was conducted on a pooled sample of 1,516 households, which were selected using a simple random sampling method. The HFIAS was translated into the local Amharic language and tested for face validity. We also evaluated the tool’s internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis. We tested for parallelism on HFIAS item response curves across wealth status and further evaluated the presence of a dose-response relationship ...
Altruism allows doing for others as one would be done by. Unlike reaction formation, which also gives to the object what the self desires, altruism leaves the self at least partly gratified. Unlike reaction formation, altruism tempers asceticism with pleasure. Unlike passive aggression and martyrdom, altruism allows the object to feel blessed and not afflicted. Altruism attracts people to the user; martyrdom repels them even as it holds them close in chains.. *: Altruism is a behaviour of an individual that benefits another at its own expense....She decided to investigate what motivates ants to undertake these dangerous missions, where they risk getting trapped themselves or, worse, eaten by predatory antlion larvae, which dig pits and lurk, semi-concealed, at the bottom with their jaws wide open. Such apparently selfless rescue behaviour is seen by many as one of the purest forms of altruism....Being nice to relatives is not pure altruism because they share your genes so, by helping them, you ...

June 13, 2014) US government action can curb the risks climate change poses to global food security, says a new report (PDF) released by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs.. Building on the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change report and National Climate Assessment, The Chicago Council's study explains how higher temperatures, changes in rainfall and natural disasters caused by climate change could undermine food production and put food supplies at risk. In total, climate change could reduce food production growth by 2 percent each decade for the rest of this century.. The report calls on the US government to integrate climate change adaptation into its global food security strategy. Recommendations include:. -Passing legislation for a long-term global food and nutrition security strategy.. -Increasing funding for agricultural research on climate change adaptation. Research priorities should include improving crop and livestock tolerance to higher temperatures and volatile ...
This thesis examines the significance of sociobiology within Wesleyan ethics. In addition to investigating how sociobiological altruism connects to Wesleyan holiness, it argues that John Wesley capitalized on the biological and environmental constraints on human action, creating a particular setting that nurtured altruism in his followers through the cultivation of holiness. Of the main chapters, Chapter 2 helps the reader understand basic and current sociobiological explanations of altruistic behavior-a behavior that has been a stumbling block for evolutionary theorists who have attempted, unsuccessfully, to explain why or how it exists. To address the presence of altruism among humans, this chapter elucidates kin selection theory, group selection theory (also called multilevel selection theory), and game theory, seeking to provide clarification of current research within the field of sociobiology. Chapter 3 offers a critique of the sociobiological explanations of altruism and examines the ...
The identification of predictors for body image distortion would be an especially important first step in targeting a vulnerable population and developing a nutrition intervention program. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of body image distortion and the factors associated with body image distortion among Korean high school students. We selected 20,264 normal weight high school students from the 10th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey using nationally representative data in 2014. With multivariate logistic regression, we assessed the association of body image distortion with individual demographic and socio-economic factors, weight control behaviors, and mental health characteristics. The over-estimation group of body weight status, compared with the correct estimation group, was significantly more likely to be a 3rd year high school student [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.27, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.16-1.39], to be female [AOR: 3.52, 95 % CI: 3.25-3.81], to employ unhealthy weight
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand spoke on the Senate Floor this afternoon to urge her colleagues to provide desperately needed disaster relief to the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Gillibrand spoke on the Senate floor in response to the growing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands caused by Hurricane Maria.. Below are Senator Gillibrand's remarks as delivered:. Mr. President, I rise to speak about the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.. This is one of the worst disasters our country has ever seen.. The men and women and children who live on these islands are American citizens. Do not forget that.. They are suffering and they need our help.. They have no food to eat. No water to drink. No power. No refrigeration.. If we don't give them help now, then many more people there will die - far more than those who were killed during the hurricane itself.. I urge my colleagues here to think about our fellow American citizens in ...

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, a Republican turned Independent, on Wednesday signed into law a bill to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.. The Providence Journal reported that the law makes possessing an ounce or less of marijuana a civil violation with a $150 fine. However, three violations within 18 months would be a misdemeanor with larger fines and possibly prison. Half of the money collected by the fines will be put towards drug awareness and treatment programs for youths.. Last year, Chafee asked the federal Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule II drug. Sixteen states, including Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia have legalized the use of medical marijuana. However, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration still classifies marijuana as a schedule I drug: the most restrictive classification reserved for dangerous drugs with no real medical value.. ...

Humanitarian assistance is still relevant in eastern Ukraine. The United Nations reports that 3.1 million people are in need of emergency aid, particularly health services, food, clean water, sanitation and shelter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania will allocate humanitarian aid to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Lithuania has already allocated EUR 1.1 million in humanitarian help to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, out of which EUR 256,6 thousand were provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.. Bearing in mind the exceptional role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in providing assistance to more than 5 million Palestine refugees, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania allocated EUR 20,000 to the organization. UNRWA provides assistance and support to Palestine refugees, who live in 58 recognized Palestine refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and the West Bank, including ...

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed food assistance programs serving American Indians, focusing on: (1) which programs provided assistance to Indians living on reservations; (2) whether the food packages distributed under the programs were adequate to meet Indians' nutritional needs; and (3) whether Indians had any special nutritional needs that the programs were not addressing.. GAO found that: (1) the Food Stamp Program and the Food Distribution on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) are the two largest programs serving Indians living on reservations; (2) FDPIR provides commodity food to eligible low-income households; (3) in calendar year 1988, combined participation in FDPIR and the Food Stamp Program ranged from 38 to 90 percent on the four reservations GAO reviewed; (4) nonfederal food assistance efforts on reservations are small compared with federal food assistance programs; (5) FDPIR was intended to provide eligible households with a supplemental food source, and opinions varied ...

Attorney General Eric Holder announced a new Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulation that represents new take-back efforts to dispose of unused and unnecessary prescription drugs so that the growing problems of prescription drug misuse and addiction can be mitigated. The Attorney General announced the new regulation through a video message posted on the Justice Department's website. According to the Attorney General's message, "prescription drug misuse is an urgent and growing threat.". Statistics. The video message highlights the fact that the scope of the problem is expansive. For example, according to the video, "in 2011 alone, more than half of the 41,300 unintentional drug overdose deaths in the United States involved prescription drugs, and hazardous opioid pain relievers led to about 17,000 of those deaths." According to a DOJ press release, the danger is particularly prominent for young people. Despite the risk, many instances of misuse appear to have simple solutions. For ...
The 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa was of unprecedented magnitude with a total of 28,616 suspected, probable, and confirmed cases reported in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. The international humanitarian community utilized its expertise in rapid response and scale up in emergency situations to manage a threat different from the more common humanitarian emergencies resulting from conflict or natural disaster. Unique multisectoral partnerships forged between traditional public health actors and humanitarian actors facilitated mutual learning and opened the door to ongoing working relationships that will hasten efficient and effective response to future global public health emergencies.

In recent years, online pharmacies have been accepted by increasingly more consumers, and the prospects for online pharmacies are optimistic. This article explores the consumers' satisfaction factors addressed in Business to Customer (B2C) online pharmacy reviews and analyzes the sentiments expressed in the reviews. The goal of this work is to help B2C online pharmacy enterprises identify consumers' concerns, continuously improve the health services level. This article was based on the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model. From a third-party platform-based B2C online pharmacy and a proprietary B2C online pharmacy (JD Pharmacy and J1.COM, respectively), 136,630 pieces of over-the-counter (OTC) drug review data posted from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2018 were selected as samples and used to explore the satisfaction factors of B2C online pharmacy consumers regarding the entire drug purchasing process. Then, the sentiments expressed in the drug reviews were analyzed with SnowNLP.
Introduction Canadians eat at fast food restaurants more regularly than in the past. Fast foods are higher in energy, saturated fats, and sodium than most other foods, and the portion sizes are often very large. Thus, excessive fast food consumption contributes to an unhealthy diet and a host of adverse health effects.. Individuals with a low socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnic minorities are at increased risk for excessive fast food consumption. Another determinant of fast food consumption is the density of fast food restaurants in the environment. There is a greater density of fast food restaurants in poorer neighbourhoods and neighbourhoods with larger ethnic minority populations. Disparities may also exist in the extent to which fast food restaurants are associated with fast food consumption. However, this relationship has not been examined in young Canadians.. ...
Sahrawi refugees live in a desert area near the town of Tindouf, where living conditions are extremely harsh and they remain heavily dependent on external humanitarian assistance to survive," said WFP deputy country director in Algeria Francesca Caponera. "A halt in WFP food assistance would have a severe impact on the food security and nutritional status of the refugees and may also have unpredictable consequences on the stability of the area.". WFP made this appeal during a briefing session held today in Algiers and was joined by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN Children's fund (UNICEF). WFP is facing a shortfall of US$10 million until the end of this year.. "The unprecedented scale of humanitarian emergencies around the world has overshadowed the long-lasting Sahrawi refugee crisis and negatively impacted donor support," said UNHCR Representative in Algeria Ralf Gruenert. "Food assistance is particularly affected and unless new funding becomes available, the UN will be forced to ...

Downloadable! Adopting renewable energy technologies has been seen as a promising way to reduce CO2 emissions and deforestation. This paper investigates how social networks may affect renewable energy technology adoption. We distinguish two channels through which social networks may play a role: (i) the diffusion of information; and (ii) the diffusion of behavior. Most empirical studies fail to quantitatively separate the diffusion of information and behavior in social networks. We conduct a survey on biogas technology adopting in rural China to identify individuals' egocentric information networks. We find that both the diffusion of information and behavior drive farmers' technology adoption. Farmers with larger egocentric information networks and a larger fraction of known adopters are more likely to adopt the biogas technology. In addition, we collect data on several attributes of alters to explore the composition of social networks. We find heterogeneous social network effects across different types
Subsequent historians have offered other explanations to the disease outbreaks during the spring of 1952. For example, it has been noted that spring time is usually a period of epidemics within China and North Korea,[35] and years of warfare had also caused a breakdown in the Korean health care system. Historians have argued that under these circumstances, diseases could easily spread throughout the entire military and civilian populations within Korea.[38][39] Australian historian Gavan McCormack argued that the claim of US biological warfare use was "far from inherently implausible", pointing out that one of the POWs who confessed, Walker Mahurin, was in fact associated with Fort Detrick.[40] He also pointed out that, as the deployment of nuclear and chemical weapons was considered, there is no reason to believe that ethical principles would have overruled the resort to biological warfare.[41] He also suggested that the outbreak in 1951 of viral haemorrhagic fever, which had previously been ...
In September 2011, a total of 511 human cases of anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) infection and 5 deaths were reported in a game management area in the district of Chama, Zambia, near where 85 hippopotamuses (Hippopotamus amphibious) had recently died of suspected anthrax. The human infections generally responded to antibiotics. To clarify transmission, we conducted a cross-sectional, interviewer-administered household survey in villages where human anthrax cases and hippopotamus deaths were reported. Among 284 respondents, 84% ate hippopotamus meat before the outbreak. Eating, carrying, and preparing meat were associated with anthrax infection. Despite the risk, 23% of respondents reported they would eat meat from hippopotamuses found dead again because of food shortage (73%), lack of meat (12%), hunger (7%), and protein shortage (5%). Chronic food insecurity can lead to consumption of unsafe foods, leaving communities susceptible to zoonotic infection. Interagency cooperation is necessary to prevent
Background. Persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia is associated with high mortality rates, but no treatment strategy has yet been established. We performed this study to evaluate the efficacy of linezolid with or without carbapenem in salvage treatment for persistent MRSA bacteremia.. Methods. All adult patients with persistent MRSA bacteremia for ⩾7 days from January 2006 through March 2008 who were treated at Seoul National University Hospital were studied. The results of linezolid salvage therapy with or without carbapenem were compared with those of salvage therapy with vancomycin plus aminoglycosides or rifampicin.. Results. Thirty-five patients with persistent MRSA bacteremia were studied. The early microbiological response (ie, negative results for follow-up blood culture within 72 hours) was significantly higher in the linezolid-based salvage therapy group than the comparison group (75% vs 17%; P=.006). Adding aminoglycosides or rifampicin to ...
To investigate the effects of perinatal fluoride exposure on learning and memory ability of mouse offspring, ICR female mice were received different doses of sodium fluoride (0, 25, 50, 100 mg/L NaF) from pregnant day 7 to lactational day 21. Pups were exposed to fluoride through the cord blood and breast milk. Open field test showed that compared to the control group, perinatal fluoride exposure significantly decreased the number of entries into the center zone in 100 mg/L NaF group. In the eight-arm maze test, the number of working memory errors, reference memory errors, and the total arm entries were significantly increased in fluoride treatment groups, compared to the control group. Additionally, 100 mg/L NaF significantly elevated the expression levels of miR-124, miR-132, and DiGeorge syndrome chromosomal region 8 (DGCR8) in hippocampus of mouse pups at postnatal day (PND) 21. Contrarily, methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) were dramatically reduced in 50 and 100 mg/L NaF groups, while ...
If two players play prisoner's dilemma more than once in succession and they remember previous actions of their opponent and change their strategy accordingly, the game is called iterated prisoner's dilemma. In addition to the general form above, the iterative version also requires that 2R , T + S, to prevent alternating cooperation and defection giving a greater reward than mutual cooperation. The iterated prisoner's dilemma game is fundamental to some theories of human cooperation and trust. On the assumption that the game can model transactions between two people requiring trust, cooperative behaviour in populations may be modeled by a multi-player, iterated, version of the game. It has, consequently, fascinated many scholars over the years. In 1975, Grofman and Pool estimated the count of scholarly articles devoted to it at over 2,000. The iterated prisoner's dilemma has also been referred to as the "Peace-War game".[9] If the game is played exactly N times and both players know this, then ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Cultural accommodation and language priming. T2 - Competitive versus cooperative behavior in a prisoner's dilemma game. AU - Akkermans, D.. AU - Harzing, A.W.K.. AU - van Witteloostuijn, A.. PY - 2010. Y1 - 2010. N2 - This paper explores three arguments. First, cultural accommodation by living in another culture for a while may have a long-lasting but partially dormant influence on behavior. Second, foreign language is a prime, activating behavior associated with this language. Third, a foreign language is expected to be a particularly forceful prime for those who have lived in a country where this language is spoken. We explore this logic in a prisoner's dilemma quasi-experiment that focuses on competitive versus cooperative behavior. Testing our predictions with 358 Dutch students, we found that previous exposure to an Anglophone culture with higher values for masculinity, performance orientation and assertiveness negatively influences cooperative behavior in a prisoner's ...

African swine fever is highly contagious and nearly 100% fatal to swine herds. It occurs among pigs and wild boars, transmitted by ticks and direct contact between animals. There is no vaccine for the disease, but it does not affect humans.. The first outbreak of African swine fever in East Asia was reported in China in early August 2018. Since then, the deadly virus has spread to all Chinese provinces and regions, as well as to other Asian nations, including Vietnam and the Philippines.. South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy, does not import any pork products or live pigs from China due to China's history of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks. It mainly imports from the United States and Germany, and pork imports account for about a third of the country's total pork supplies.. Although this is the first time African swine fever has hit South Korea, an incidence of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed in March 2018 at a hog farm, the country's first discovery since February 2017.. South Korea ...
Crossing the heavily guarded 38th parallel that divides North and South Korea is virtually impossible, so a majority of refugees attempt to travel through China until they reach South-East Asia. Push factors, such as widespread human rights violations, hunger, economic problems, environmental disasters and war, are reinforced by strong pull factors such as seemingly better living conditions in other countries.. Once refugees get out of North Korea, however, China continues to forcibly repatriate all North Koreans found within its borders. Previously, North Koreans apprehended within the borders of countries including Thailand, Vietnam and Laos would be handed over to representatives of the South Korean government. The informal agreement existing between South Korea and third countries now seems untenable, as does the future of the 'Underground Railroad' used to spirit North Korean refugees out of China. Yet the international community has not found a coherent voice with which to condemn the ...
Recent reports from both the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have confirmed 2014 as the hottest year on record. Average global temperatures and sea levels are on the rise, and precipitation in crucial agricultural zones is diminishing. The world can no longer ignore these indicators-and, particularly, the connections between climate change and global food security.. The twenty-first Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place in Paris November 30 to December 11, 2015. One of the largest climate conferences ever organized, the session will bring together more than 40,000 participants, including delegates representing each country, as well as observers and civil society members. This crucial conference aims to create a new international agreement on climate with the goal of keeping global warming below 2°C.. Fortunately, many ...
Purpose: Our previous study showed no correlation between -202 A/C IGFBP-3 promoter polymorphism and Δheight SDS in children with growth hormone deficiency. We investigated the influences of the -202 IGFBP-3 polymorphism on 1-year follow-up outcomes of GH treatment in Korean children with ISS..
