Tidal range changes in the Delaware Bay : past conditions and future scenarios
Throughout the Holocene, appreciable changes in bathymetry are hypothesized to have resulted in large changes to tidal datums in coastal and estuarine areas. An understanding of tidal change is an important contribution to the knowledge of relative historical sea-level change and future coastal planning. To test this hypothesis, the Advanced Circulation (ADCIRC) model was used, with representative bathymetric grids based on glacial isostatic adjustment models and semi-empirical sea level rise predictions, in order to model the time-varying tidal behavior of the Delaware Bay. Model runs were conducted at various time slices between 10,000 years before present and 300 years into the future on high resolution grids that allowed for inundation moving forward in time. Open boundary tidal forcing was held constant in time to highlight the effect of the changing regional bathymetry. With each change in sea level, the shape of the Delaware Bay was considerably altered, leading to changes in the tides. ...

Recent Changes in the Admissibility of Biomechanical Expert Testimony in Delaware: Delaware Law Firm
Introduction. Delawares Supreme Court recently decided a trio of cases concerning the admissibility of biomechanical expert testimony. Biomechanics is the study of the mechanical bases of biological, especially muscular, activity; also: the study of the principles and relations involved.[2] The decisions, Eskin v. Carden,[3] Mason v. Rizzi,[4] and Potter v. Blackburn[5] have changed the manner in which biomechanical expert testimony can be offered into evidence in Delaware. In these cases, the Delaware Supreme Court, for the first time, held that biomechanical expert testimony is admissible when offered to show a relationship between the force of a collision and the resulting injuries.[6] The Court did, however, place substantial limitations on those who would proffer such evidence. The Court held that trial judges cannot admit biomechanical expert testimony unless the method of evaluation used is properly calibrated in such a way as to take into consideration the particular medical history ...

Delaware River - Sandy Long Photos
The Delaware River is the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi and a waterway of breathtaking majesty that has called to countless hearts, soothed many a ravaged spirit and nourished innumerable life forms. Its East and West branches merge near Hancock, NY and it courses toward New Jersey and Delaware, stitching together a string of towns along its New York and Pennsylvania borders. The river is the lifeblood of the region. Those who journey here may encounter beautiful and interesting animals and plants like the shadowed hemlock groves lining the ridges, the doe and fawn sipping at waters edge, the black bear peering from a forested fringe, a great blue heron feeding in the shallows, bald eagles soaring over the open channel, even eels and lamprey-each living their lives in or near the rivers flow. The Delaware River enlivens ones senses and has stirred stewardship, awakened activism, divided and brought together individuals and communities over issues that, like the waterway itself,

Maryland, Delaware Begin Sharing ADT Summaries | Healthcare Informatics Magazine | Health IT | Information Technology
One of the most valuable services health information exchanges are providing involves the acronym ADT, which stands for admission, discharge and transfer summaries. Providing physicians information when their patients have significant hospital events allows for faster follow-up care. A big first for HIEs is now taking place on the Delmarva Peninsula with ADT summaries being shared across state lines.. The Delaware Health Information Network (DHIN) and Marylands CRISP (the Chesapeake Regional Information System for Our Patients) are now exchanging ADT summaries.. According to an item on the DHIN web site, Delaware residents who are patients at three hospital systems in Maryland - Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, the University of Maryland Medical System hospitals on the Eastern Shore and Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury - will have ADT summaries sent to their doctors in Delaware. The remaining 41 Maryland hospitals will be added to the system in the coming months.. Notifications for ...
Delaware environment: Seeing trees as sustainable | ForestIndustries.EU
he Great Cypress Swamp once covered as much as 60,000 acres in Delaware and nearby Maryland.. Today the great swamp totals about 12,000 acres.. But even at its diminished size, it remains among the largest contiguous forests left on the Delmarva Peninsula.. From the air, there is a massive swath of green among the puzzle pieces of farmland that connect southern Sussex County and nearby Worcester County, Md.. The only thing people have here is land and beauty, Pete Martin said more than two decades ago. And beauty doesnt give them any money.. These days, Martin has a another take on making beauty pay: With artful harvesting, the trees can help sustain efforts to restore the massive forest.. The swamp is a work in progress, said Martin, swamp manager for Delaware Wild Lands, the conservation organization that owns and manages some 11,000 acres that remain of the swamp.. Delaware Wild Lands has embraced sustainable forestry and has started to selectively harvest some of its trees -- mostly ...

Bald Eagles - Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River (U.S. National Park Service)
Until recently, your chances of actually seeing an eagle along the Upper Delaware were slim. That has changed, thanks to recent cooperative efforts to improve environmental conditions and to re-establish the bald eagle in the eastern United States. After nearly disappearing from most of the United States decades ago, the bald eagle is now flourishing across the nation and no longer needs the protection of the Endangered Species Act. After removal from the nations list of threatened and endangered species in 2007, the bald eagle continues to be protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Regionally, the Upper Delaware River has played an important role in this population growth. Both New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Pennsylvania Game Commission have had bald eagle restoration or hacking programs.. With proper technique and planning, winter eagle-watching has become a popular off-season activity in the Upper Delaware ...
Distribution of Pfiesteria piscicida cyst populations in sediments of the Delaware Inland Bays, USA
The toxic dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria piscicida, is a common constituent of the phytoplankton community in the Delaware Inland Bays, USA. In this study, molecular methods were used to investigate the distributions of benthic stages (cysts) of P. piscicida in sediment cores from the Delaware Inland Bays. Cores from 35 sites were partitioned into nephloid and anoxic layers and analyzed for P. piscicida by nested amplification of the 18S rDNA gene using P. piscicida-specific primers. The presence of inhibitory substances in the PCR reaction was evaluated by inclusion of an exogenous control DNA in the extraction buffer, thus eliminating samples that may yield false-negative results. Our results indicate a patchy distribution of P. piscicida in sediments of the Delaware Inland Bays, with distinct differences between each of the three bays. Overall, P. piscicida was found more frequently in sediments from Rehoboth Bay compared to Indian River and Little Assawoman Bays. These differences suggest (i) ...

Diel differences in abundance and diversity of fish species and blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) in the sandy beach shore zone...
Diel sampling was conducted during June September 2013, in the shore zone and adjacent nearshore zone of Delaware Bay, Delaware, to identify day and night changes in nekton density, species richness, and the species assemblage. Mean species richness and total nekton density in the shore zone were higher at night. A detailed examination of abundant species revealed that bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli), weakfish (Cynoscion regalis), spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), and blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) occurred in higher densities in the shore zone at night than during the day. Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) occurred in higher densities during the day. Additionally, small ...
Sinai Archives - Unitarian Universalist Society: East
Rev. Josh Pawelek.. I remember a moment, about twenty-five years ago, driving home from college on spring break with my friend Rob. We were heading east on Interstate 80, late in the day, crossing through the Delaware Water Gap where the Delaware River cuts through a ridge in the Appalachian. The sun was setting. Dark shadows lengthened across the thickly forested, low-lying mountains. Ive been to more remote areas, but at that moment, for whatever reason, it felt pretty remote. I made some remark about the wilderness, how one could disappear into it-into those dark hills. I dont remember his exact words, but Rob responded that the wilderness around us is connected to the wilderness within us. Theres a relationship. Although I wasnt sure what to make of his statement at the time, it struck me as important. So Ive held onto it.. Today I still think Rob is right. The wilderness around us is connected to the wilderness within us. They mirror each other. They speak to each other. The darkness ...
ASFMC Schedules Black Sea Bass & Summer Flounder Hearings | OutdoorHub
Public Input Being Collected For 2014 Management Options. The Atlantic coast states of Massachusetts through Virginia have scheduled hearings to gather public comment on Draft Addendum XXV to the Summer Flounder and Black Sea Bass Fishery Management Plan.. For summer flounder, Draft Addendum XXV includes options that would allow for management measures by region, and the sharing of unused quota, both with the intent of providing more equity in recreational harvest opportunities along the coast.. The specific regions being considered are (1) Massachusetts; Rhode Island through New Jersey; Delaware through Virginia; and North Carolina and (2) Massachusetts and Rhode Island; Connecticut through New Jersey; Delaware through Virginia; and North Carolina.. Under region 1 above for example, Massachusetts would have a five fish bag limit, 16-inch size and 132-day season, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey would all have a four fish bag limit, 18-inch size limit and 135-day season, while ...

Highmark - Wikipedia
Highmark was created in 1977 and in the 1990s by the consolidation of two Pennsylvania licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association - Pennsylvania Blue Shield (now Highmark Blue Shield) based in suburban Harrisburg, and Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania based in downtown Pittsburgh (now Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield). The consolidated group is available in 49 of the states 67 counties.[citation needed] In West Virginia, the company operates as Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia, and in Delaware, it operates as Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Delaware. The new company based its head offices in downtown Pittsburgh. On March 28, 2007, Highmark announced it intended to consolidate with Independence Blue Cross of Philadelphia. The combination of the 2 insurers would have created a new company with over 18,000 employees, dual-headquarters in both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and an economic impact of over $4 billion throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.[citation needed] ...

Heart murmur - Mitral Valve Disease - Veterinarians Beaumont | Delaware Animal Clinic
Ive been told that my dog, a 6 year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, has a heart murmur. I am a bit confused about what the murmur means and what to do!. A heart murmur is an abnormal heart sound that can be heard when listening to the heart with a stethoscope. It occurs when there is turbulence in the flow of blood through the heart. There are a variety of diseases that can produce a murmur in the heart. However, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed is predisposed to the development of mitral valve disease. To better understand mitral valve disease, a little anatomy lesson is needed. The heart has four chambers: two upper chambers called atria (a right and a left atrium) and two lower chambers called ventricles (also divided into right and left). In between each chamber is a valve that allows the blood to move forward through the heart, while preventing the blood from going in a backward direction.. The heart valve located between the left atrium and left ventricle is known as the mitral ...
Creative Biolabs Made Breakthroughs in Improving Antibody Affinity Maturation | Delaware News Reporter
As we know, antibodies are used extensively in diagnostics and as therapeutic agents. Achieving high-affinity binding is crucial for expanding detection limits, extending dissociation half-times, decreasing drug dosages and increasing drug efficacy. In order to conquer the shortages of common antibodies, Creative Biolabs developed antibody affinity maturation service.. Weve gained extensive experience in antibody affinity maturation over the years. We use scFv as the antibody format and monovalent display phagemid as the system to reduce the avidity effects during antigen-binding screening, said Dr. Monica Müller, chief scientific officer of Creative Biolabs.. As Dr. Monica introduced, untargeted mutagenesis and oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis are used to construct random or defined sub-libraries to introduce a large number of mutants of the original antibody. Antibody binders of higher affinity are then selected by increasing the screening stringency. By constructing a series of ...

Group B/2 resistant Amaranthus hybridus (syn: quitensis) from United States, Delaware
Background. The evolution of herbicide‐resistant weeds is one of the most important concerns of global agriculture. Amaranthus hybridus L. is a competitive weed for summer crops in South America. In this article, we intend to unravel the molecular mechanisms by which an A. hybridus population from Argentina has become resistant to extraordinarily high levels of glyphosate.. Results. The glyphosate‐resistant population (A) exhibited particularly high parameters of resistance (GR50 = 20 900 g ai ha−1, Rf = 314), with all plants completing a normal life cycle even after 32X dose application. No shikimic acid accumulation was detected in the resistant plants at any of the glyphosate concentrations tested. Molecular and genetic analyses revealed a novel triple substitution (TAP‐IVS: T102I, A103V, and P106S) in the 5‐enol‐pyruvylshikimate‐3‐phosphate synthase (EPSPS) enzyme of population A and an incipient increase on the epsps relative copy number but without effects on the ...

Delaware court considers constitutionality of death penalty
DPN opposes the death penalty in all cases, unconditionally, regardless of the method chosen to kill the condemned prisoner. The death penalty is inherently cruel and degrading, an archaic punishment that is incompatible with human dignity. To end the death penalty is to abandon a destructive diversionary and divisive public policy that is not consistent with widely held values. The death penalty not only runs the risk of irrevocable error, it is also costly to the public purse as well as in social and psychological terms. The death penalty has not been proved to have a special deterrent effect. It tends to be applied in a discriminatory way on grounds of race and class. It denies the possibility of reconciliation and rehabilitation. It prolongs the suffering of the murder victims family and extends that suffering to the loved ones of the condemned prisoner. It diverts resources that could be better used to work against violent crime and assist those affected by it ...

Investigating the Mechanism of Phenol Photooxidation by Humic Substances
It is well established that organic pollutants such as phenols are degraded in the presence of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and sunlight in natural waters. Early work attributed the photochemical loss of phenols to the involvement of photoproduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as singlet oxygen (1O2), hydroxyl radical (*OH) or peroxy radicals (RO2*). However, evidence for the involvement of triplet excited states of aromatic ketones/aldehydes within CDOM has accumulated in the literature. To probe the mechanism of the photosensitized loss of phenols by humic substances (HS), the dependence of the initial rate of 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) loss (RTMP) on dioxygen concentration and irradiation wavelength was examined both for a variety of untreated as well as borohydride-reduced HS and C18 extracts from the Delaware Bay and Mid-Atlantic Bight. The effect of [O2] and borohydride-reduction of SRFA was also examined for a series of substituted phenols of varying one-electron ...

Wax museum makes room for all the presidents - Houston Chronicle
WASHINGTON - George W. Bush is surrounded by 9/11 images, Jimmy Carter stands beside a gasoline pump, and George Washington rows across the Delaware River in a new gallery showing life-size figures of all the U.S. presidents. Besides the National Portrait Gallery, the wax museum is the first place to show lifelike figures of all the presidents together in the nations capital. Tussauds decided to recast itself as a presidents gallery over its usual mix of pop stars after the attraction didnt draw as many paying visitors as planned since its 2007 opening in a city dominated by the free Smithsonian museums. Typically its London artists would rely on photographs or video of a subject, but many of the founding father figures had to be based on paintings or historical accounts. Beside Carters figure and the gas pump, for example, a label explains that oil prices spiked during the Iranian Revolution in 1979 after an earlier oil embargo by Arab nations during President Richard Nixons years.
Shades of Shelley: Azithromycin therapy for erythema annulare centrifugum
When I first arrived in Philadelphia in 1984 for my dermatopathology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, the most exciting hours of the week were Thursday mornings at the Duhring Conference. Throngs of Delaware Valley dermatologists would attend, listening to the entertaining (and often iconoclastic) pontifications of dermatologic luminaries such as Al Kligman, Jim Leyden, Paul Gross, Margaret Gray Wood, and the new chairman, Jerry Lazarus. Even though he had left just a couple of years before, the influence of Walter Shelley loomed large over the discussions.

In the Delaware Valley, some of those efforts will unfold in places where King spent formative years.. Before becoming the face of the Civil Rights Era, King was a student at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pa, near Chester.. While studying there in the late 1940s, King became close friends with Rev. J. Pius Barbour, who led nearby Calvary Baptist Church in Chester and had also been a friend of Kings father.. Week after week, the pair and other preachers would regularly discuss scripture, but also various issues facing the community and the nation.. Dr. Rev. Bayard Taylor, who heads Calvary Baptist these days, said those gatherings and Kings relationship with Barbour laid the groundwork for his leadership down the line.. Thats when the social consciousness of the Civil Rights Movement began, said ...

Mike Thomas Photos | Horseshoe Crabs at Slaughter Beach
Dawn, Samantha, and I spent Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Slaughter Beach, Delaware. Out goal to see the annual migration and mating of the horseshoe crabs. Slaughter Beach is a horseshoe crab sanctuary where they are protected from harvesting. Horseshoe crabs are prehistoric. They come to the beaches every year between May and June during high tide and the full moon to mate and lay their eggs. We made our way to the beach Friday afternoon. There were no crabs in sight but the remnants of some dead ones from previous high tide. We came back after dinner. Watched the full strawberry moon rise. Still no crabs. We waited until near 10pm and still no crabs. We called it a night. On Saturday morning we went to the DuPont Nature Center and we could see crabs on the beach using their remote controlled 360 camera. So we went back to the beach around time for high tide and there they were. Here are some photos.. ...
