Background: cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) is one of the cellular transcription factors found in neurons. CREB is also important for the survival of neurons, and has an important role in the development of drug addiction. Datura stramonium (DS) is a tropical ubiquitous plant commonly used to increase the intoxication of certain beverages for recreational purposes. The seeds of this plant are very toxic and may produce addiction on prolong usage. This research investigated the effects of administration of high doses of DS seeds on the expression of CREB protein in both male and female rats frontal cortices and its implication in addiction and neurodegeneration. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with a total of 24 male and female Wistar rats weighing 200 g - 250 g. The rats were divided into three groups of 8 rats each. Each group was further divided into four sub-groups of 2 rats each. Ethanolic dried seed extract of DS was diluted in normal saline and administered
Datura Stramonium.). Natural order.- Solanaceae.. Common names.- Thorn Apple. Jamestown Weed. Stink Weed.. General Analysis.-. Acts chiefly upon the sensorium, increasing its activity, perverting its function, and giving rise to nausea, delirium, and to hallucinations ; simulating in kind the action of Belladonna and Hyoscyamus, yet differing in degree.. The delirium is more furious, the mania more acute, while the congestion, though greater than in Hyoscyamus, is much less than in Belladonna, never approaching a true inflammatory condition.. Stramonium also produces great dryness of the throat and skin, on the latter causing a fiery red rash, resembling that of scarlatina.. On other portions of the body Stramonium only acts through sympathetic irritation from the brain. In this manner it produces dilated pupils, diminished general sensibility, perversion of the special senses, convulsive motions, intense sexual excitement, suppressed urine, etc.. Characteristic, symptoms.. Mind.- ...

S UCCESSIVE leaf extracts of three Egyptian plant species: Datura stramonium L., Withania somnifera (L.) Dun. in DC. and Ziziphus spina-christi (L.)Willd were studied for their antimicrobial activity against susceptible and Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) bacteria isolated from chickens. Four bacterial spp. namely: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella sp. were isolated from 463 different chicken samples. The sensitivity of these bacterial isolates was tested against 11 types of antibiotics: Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Cefaclor, Gentamicin, Amikacin, Tobramycin, Ciprofloxacin, Nalidixic acid, Erythromycin, Tetracycline and Vancomycin. The isolates of E. coli, S. aureus, P.aureugenosa and Salmonella sp. showed notable bacterial resistance against the used antibiotics with percentages: (68.18%), (59.09%), (54.54%) and (54.54%); respectively. Chloroform extract of Datura stramonium showed the highest antibacterial activity against all the studied bacterial isolates with
The phytochemicals screening investigation for aqueous extract of Datura stramonium leaves revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, steroidal glycosides, phenols and saponins. The antimicrobial potential of the extracts of leaves were evaluated against clinical bacterial isolates like Bacillus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas, Sarcina and Klebsiella. The results showed the exhibition of antibacterial activity against all isolates and revealed higher sensitivity for Sarcina and Staphylococcus aureus. The present study also reveals that, the assay carried out on alpha-amylase enzyme showed the dose-dependent increase in inhibitory effect with IC50 730 μg. The in vitro studies clearly indicate that the extract of D. stramonium leaves has antimicrobial activity and α-amylase enzyme inhibitory activity and hence may be considered as a potential candidate for the management of diabetes mellitus.. Anticholinergenic Deleriants. These drugs are not usually regarded as psychedelic , although they have a great deal in common historically, culturally, and pharmacologically with other drugs taken for their mind-altering powers. They are called deleriants because their effects at high doses include incoherent speach, disorientation, delusions, an ...

Rationale: To compare cancers detected during use of 5α-reductase inhibitors (5αRI) with cancers detected in untreated controls stratified for tumor size.. Methods: Prostate biopsies were performed on 235 consecutive patients "for cause" (elevated or rising PSA, positive digital rectal examination, or focal hypoechoic lesion). Fifty patients were excluded for a prior diagnosis of cancer, leaving 185 as the study group (5αRI=41, control=144). Patients in the 5αRI group had been treated for a mean of 3.5 years. Cancer was ultimately diagnosed in 114/185 patients.. Results: Cancer was diagnosed in 31/41 (76%) of patients treated with 5αRI and 83/144 (58%) of the control group (p=0.04). Control tumors were larger (14.3 mm) than those in 5αRI treated patients (9.4 mm, p=0.0007). No differences in mean PSA or PSA kinetics were detected between groups. For tumors less than 1.0 cm, the proportion of high grade cancers (Gleason 7-10 and Gleason 4+3-10) was higher in 5αRI subjects than in controls ...

Dr. Lampidis laboratory at the University of Miami has gained international recognition and leadership in the exploitation of increased glucose metabolism in cancer cells using the sugar analog 2-deoxy-D-glucose (better known as 2-DG) as a universal treatment for cancer. The problem: It is well established that by interfering with the dividing machinery of cells, traditional anti-cancer dugs kill the most rapidly dividing cells regardless of whether they are normal or cancerous. Consequently, chemotherapy is toxic to the most rapidly dividing normal cells in the body i.e. hair, bone marrow (where blood cells are made) and gut. Unfortunately, cancer drugs not only cause life-threatening side effects, but due to the nature of the way they act, cannot adequately kill the slow-growing metastatic population of cells invariably found in most if not all solid tumors. Furthermore, the newer targeted therapies, due to heterogeneity within tumors, are also limited in their ability to work effectively. ...
RE: Project Moonshot - Developing a Universal Cure for Cancer Using 2-DG. March 8, 2016. Dear Vice President Biden,. Allow me to first express how sorry I was to hear about the untimely death of your son Beau from cancer. Please accept my sincere condolences. We have all lost too many family members and friends to this devastating disease, and finding a cure must become a global priority.. I was immensely encouraged to read your recent, timely announcement regarding Project Moonshot, and your call to arms to the global scientific community to accelerate the search for a cure for cancer. This is something that I have devoted my professional life to, and am writing to ask for your assistance to provide the final breakthrough.. Our laboratory has gained international recognition and leadership in the exploitation of increased glucose metabolism in cancer cells using the sugar analog 2-deoxy-D-glucose (better known as 2-DG) as a universal treatment for cancer. Until three years ago, our work had ...
All Datura plants contain tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine, primarily in their seeds and flowers. Because of the presence of these substances, Datura has been used for centuries in some cultures as a poison.[5][6] There can be a 5:1 toxin variation between plants,[citation needed] and a given plants toxicity depends on its age, where it is growing, and the local weather conditions. These variations makes Datura exceptionally hazardous as a drug.. In traditional cultures, a great deal of experience with and detailed knowledge of Datura was critical to minimize harm.[5] Many tragic incidents result from modern users ingesting Datura. For example, in the 1990s and 2000s, the United States media contained stories of adolescents and young adults dying or becoming seriously ill from intentionally ingesting Datura.[7][8] There are also several reports in the medical literature of deaths from D. stramonium and D. ferox intoxication.[9][10][11] Children are especially ...
Hyoscyamine (also known as daturine) is a tropane alkaloid. It is a secondary metabolite found in certain plants of the family Solanaceae, including henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), mandrake (Mandragora officinarum), jimsonweed (Datura stramonium), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna). It is the levorotary isomer of atropine (third of the three major nightshade alkaloids) and thus sometimes known as levo-atropine. Brand names for hyoscyamine include Symax, HyoMax, Anaspaz, Egazil, Buwecon, Cystospaz, Levsin, Levbid, Levsinex, Donnamar, NuLev, Spacol T/S and Neoquess. Hyoscyamine is an antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (antimuscarinic). It blocks the action of acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in sweat glands, salivary glands, stomach secretions, heart muscle, sinoatrial node, smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract, and the central nervous system. It increases cardiac output and heart rate, lowers blood pressure and dries secretions. It may ...
SCOPOLAMINE AND ATROPINE Scopolamine (d -hyoscine) and attopine (dl -hyosycamine) is a tropane alkaloid found in the leaves and seeds of several plant species of the family Solanaceae, including deadly nightshade (Atropa bella-donna ) and henbane (Hyoscyamus niger ). Atropine, a major alkaloid in deadly nightshade, is also found in Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium ). Source for information on Scopolamine and Atropine: Encyclopedia of Drugs, Alcohol, and Addictive Behavior dictionary.
It has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic, and poison. Before the Middle Ages, it was used as an anesthetic for surgery; the ancient Romans used it as a poison (the wife of Emperor Augustus and the wife of Claudius both used it to murder contemporaries); and predating this, it was used to make poison tipped arrows. The genus name "atropa" comes from Atropos, one of the three Fates in Greek mythology, and the name "bella donna" is derived from Italian and means "beautiful woman".. Belladonna tinctures, decoctions, and powders, as well as alkaloid salt mixtures, are produced for pharmaceutical use, and these are often standardised at 1037 parts hyoscyamine to 194 parts atropine and 65 parts scopolamine. The alkaloids are compounded with phenobarbital and/or kaolin and pectin for use in various functional gastrointestinal disorders. The tincture, used for identical purposes, remains in most pharmacopoeias, with a similar tincture of Datura stramonium having been in the US Pharmacopoeia ...
During the last decade, lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) has been introduced in Iran in the horticultural cut-flower industry. This crop is currently produced in more than 800 small greenhouses on a surface of an estimated 0.8 km2 in the Pakdasht region (southeast of Teheran Province). Plants exhibiting virus-like symptoms were observed in several greenhouses in 2010. The infected plants produced yellow and necrotic spots on the leaves and became severely deformed because of a strong leaf curling and the production of shorter internodes. Flower breaking has not been observed in the blue flowering plants. Approximately 85% of the plants were apparently infected in the inspected greenhouses. Extracts of infected material inoculated onto some indicator plant species induced mosaic and leaf malformation on Nicotiana benthamiana, mottling on Capsicum annuum, necrotic lesions on Datura stramonium, chlorotic local spots on Vigna unguiculata, systemic necrotic spots on Emilia sonchifolia, chlorotic ...
American hop latent virus is distinct from the two other carlaviruses known to occur in hop, hop mosaic and hop latent; it is only very distantly related to them serologically, has a wider host range, and differs from them in causing obvious symptoms in several species, notably Datura stramonium and Chenopodium quinoa, both of which are immune to hop latent virus and sustain only symptomless local infection by hop mosaic virus. Symptoms caused by the latter two viruses in herbaceous hosts are too mild for diagnosis, and identification of all three viruses, which can occur together in hop, is best done by serology. ...
INTRODUCTION. Mild steel is widely used in chemical industries due to its low cost and easy availability for fabrication reaction of vessel, tanks, pipeline and boiler, because it suffer from severe corrosion in aggressive environments, it has to be protective. The corrosion of metal in aqueous solution occurs in two steps oxidation and reduction. Oxidation reaction takes place at anode, whereas reduction takes place at cathode. The cathodic reaction may be either by evolution of hydrogen and absorption of oxygen.. Mild steel is a reactive metal to reduce the corrosion problem in these environment inhibitive effects of various naturally occurring substance like Datura stramonium1, Tannin beet root, Tamarind, Tealeaves, Pomegranate juice, Saponin2, Embellica officinalis, Terminalia bellerica, a mixture of the later three Spindus trifolianus, Acacia concianna, Swerti aungustifolia and quinoline based cinchona alkaloids as well as very popular ayurvadic powder Mahasudarshana chuma, Prosopis ...

Thrips-transmitted Iris yellow spot virus (genus Tospovirus, family Bunyaviridae) is an economically important pathogen of onion bulb and seed crops in the USA and other parts of the world (2,4). Studies on biological characteristics of the virus have been limited due to difficulties in obtaining consistent and reproducible mechanical transmission and lack of indicator hosts. The existence of strains of IYSV is not known though differences in symptomatology, disease severity, and yield losses could be attributed to the presence of different IYSV strains. To better understand the biological diversity of IYSV, several plant species were evaluated for their response to mechanical inoculation with IYSV under controlled greenhouse conditions. Our research program seeks to identify the cellular and molecular programs that are dysregulated in vascular disease with a focus on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). This condition can be a fatal complication in children with heart defects, but can also arise as a potentially fatal disease of unknown etiology, primarily in young women. PAH is characterized by progressive loss and occlusion of the distal pulmonary microcirculation, and is associated with endothelial dysfunction, exuberant proliferation of de-differentiated smooth muscle-like cells, and chronic perivascular inflammation, all contributing to increased resistance to flow and culminating in heart failure. There are treatments for PAH that improve survival and quality of life. However these therapies primarily dilate blood vessels and do not cure PAH because they do not alter the underlying pathological mechanisms that cause the obliteration of the lung blood vessels. Our studies use high throughput genomic technologies, a ...
Myocardial infarction (also known as heart attack) is responsible for significant cardiac destruction due to ischemia (lack of blood flow). This can lead to further or recurrent infarct and chronic angina. This problem is caused most commonly by coronary vessel disease which is very common in the United States and associated with significant morbidity. Cell therapy potentially offers an important solution for Post MI Myocardial Infarction. During cardiac ischemia, millions of myocytes are lost resulting in loss of contractile function. One of the great goals of regenerative medicine is to engineer methods of replacing these cells. Recently adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells appear to be playing an important role in this regeneration. There is also a growing body of data supporting the use of engineered biologics such as selected cell populations, organic scaffolds, and modified (differentiated or de-differentiated) stem cells to regenerate damaged myocardium. It is unknown whether the cost ...

Is this what happens when a person gets obsessed with growing Brugmansias? Could it be that the narcotic effect of the first open flower creates an unyielding hunger for more....? Is the slowly developing addiction to scopolamine unconsciously forcing the grower to dream of acquiring more and more Brugmansia plants, because this means a larger dose of smell and thereby more narcotic? Does the intoxifying effect on the grower explain, why so many of them become so passionated about Brugmansia that they start neglecting other important things in life? If so, my dear Brugmansia-lovers, you have been burundangeared (yes, theres even a verb for ...
