Each year up to 125 million pregnancies occur in malaria endemic countries. Malaria infection during pregnancy can result in pregnancy loss, maternal death, severe maternal anaemia and low infant birth weight which increases the risk of death. It is associated with as many as 100,000 children dying needlessly every year. The Malaria in Pregnancy Consortium (MiP) works across 47 institutions worldwide, using standardized methods and sharing research data and information across the consortium. The Consortium develops projects within four key research areas:
The WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) is a collaborative platform generating innovative resources and reliable evidence to inform the malaria community on the factors affecting the efficacy of antimalarial medicines. The present invention creates a model that maps object classes in an object-oriented environment to a data source. The model maps the relationship between properties of each object class and data of the data source. The present invention can be used with a data source such as a relational database, user interface, file system, or object-oriented database. An applications object classes and data source schema are designed independent of the other since the model can be used to map one to the other. The model is comprised of entities and attributes. An entity maps to an object class and to at least one table of the DBMS. An entity contains attributes either simple or derived. A simple attribute maps to a DBMS column. A derived attribute is a combination of other attributes and does not directly map to a DBMS column. A relationship creates a link between entities of the model. A relationship can be used to flatten an attribute or flatten a relationship. A flattened attribute is an attribute of one entity

Previous studies have investigated the influence of neuroscience information or images on ratings of scientific evidence quality but have yielded mixed results. We examined the influence of neuroscience information on evaluations of flawed scientific studies after taking into account individual differences in scientific reasoning skills, thinking dispositions, and prior beliefs about a claim. We found that neuroscience information, even though irrelevant, made people believe they had a better understanding of the mechanism underlying a behavioral phenomenon. Neuroscience information had a smaller effect on ratings of article quality and scientist quality. Our study suggests that neuroscience information may provide an illusion of explanatory depth. Those who object to the introduction of #5G networks will soon be accused of conspiracy thinking. It does not address or even look at what 5G actually means. Apparently there is a blind faith that our government is responsibly dealing with this matter. Whether that trust is justified, is very much the question! To begin with, the Netherlands has the highest standard for electromagnetic radiation (EHS) in Europe. Radiation levels therefore quickly fall within the acceptable standard. This standard is established as follows: A bag of salt water was irradiated for six minutes by a transmitter. Then it was examined how hot the water was and concluded that it was safe. Only the thermal effect of radiation has determined the safety standard, biological effects have not been studied at all. Health risks therefore play no role for our government in determining acceptable radiation levels! Already 3500 people in the Netherlands know that their health problems are caused by EHS, but many people with ...

We would like to develop software and documentation that will help people get from sequence to diagnosis. At the moment, we are focusing on identifying and classifying SNPs, but we will broaden this identification to other things like large deletions or insertions or repeats when we have more expertise. We are attempting to harness the power of other already existing tools, and we would also like to make this tool one that others can build upon. Specifically, our program will eventually be able to determine location based on BLAST, determine any SNPs based on NCBI SNP, and give a prognosis based on OMIM and online medical databases. ...

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the lifetime risk of undergoing primary total hip (THR) or knee (TKR) replacement in the UK. METHOD: A Population-based cohort study of 25,845 patients who had undergone a THR and 23,260 patients who had undergone a TKR between 1991 and 2006, using data from the UK General Practice Research Database. RESULTS: The estimated mortality-adjusted lifetime risk of THR at age 50 for the year 2005 was 11.6% (95% CI: 11.1, 12.1) for women and 7.1% (95% CI: 6.7, 7.5) for men. For TKR the risks were 10.8% (95% CI: 10.3, 11.3) for women and 8.1% (95% CI: 7.6, 8.5) for men. Between 1991 and 2006, the lifetime risk of THR at age 50 rose from 4.0% (95% CI: 3.5, 4.4) to 11.1% (95% CI: 10.6, 11.6) for women and for men from 2.2% (95% CI: 1.8, 2.5) to 6.6% (95% CI: 6.2, 7.0). Over the same period, for TKR the risk for women increased from 2.9% (95% CI: 2.6, 3.3) to 10.6% (95% CI: 10.1, 11.1) and for men from 1.8% (95% CI: 1.5, 2.2) to 7.7% (95% CI: 7.3, 8.2). CONCLUSION: The lifetime risk of
Explanations of psychological phenomena seem to generate more public interest when they contain neuroscientific information. Even irrelevant neuroscience information in an explanation of a psychological phenomenon may interfere with peoples abilities to critically consider the underlying logic of this explanation. We tested this hypothesis by giving naïve adults, students in a neuroscience course, and neuroscience experts brief descriptions of psychological phenomena followed by one of four types of explanation, according to a 2 (good explanation vs. bad explanation) x 2 (without neuroscience vs. with neuroscience) design. Crucially, the neuroscience information was irrelevant to the logic of the explanation, as confirmed by the expert subjects. Subjects in all three groups judged good explanations as more satisfying than bad ones. But subjects in the two nonexpert groups additionally judged that explanations with logically irrelevant neuroscience information were more satisfying than ...
Use of portals has nothing to do with small or large (multi-terabyte) data warehouse. Portals do not interact directly with the database but rather take information generated by an infoprovider specific to the database using tool that access data directly from data warehouse. For example you have a large data warehouse and whatever mechanism you use to query (say Business Objects, PL/SQL, ODBC, JDBC, BEX Query ?for BW, or anything else) then it is the outcome of that query which will be taken by the Portal content manager interface (using iViews for SAP EP or portlets for Oracle, IBM, Pagelets for Peopelsoft) to process pages for the intended user. So it all boils down to the how you provide data to a portal and not much to do with the size of a data warehouse.. ...
Use of data from the UK General Practice Research Database was an obvious strength, given the size and representativeness of the sample, and the quality, completeness, and duration of the follow-up data. Data on drug use were based on documented prescriptions rather than self reported receipt or use of drugs. We had detailed information on a wide range of potential confounders, going back several years. In particular, we were able to control for a large number of physical and psychiatric morbidities as well as prescriptions of other drugs. This is especially important given the possibility of confounding by indication (that is, study drugs may be given more often to those who are seriously ill and who may not be able to sleep because of pain or other consequences of long term or life threatening illnesses). In contrast with a recent report,23 we were able to adjust for anxiety disorders as well as all other psychiatric disorders. We were also able to identify and control for recorded instances ...

Stress response genes and their regulators form networks that underlie drug resistance. These networks often have an inherent tradeoff: their expression is costly in the absence of stress, but beneficial in stress. They can quickly emerge in the genomes of infectious microbes and cancer cells, protecting them from treatment. Yet, the evolution of stress resistance networks is not well understood. Here, we use a two‐component synthetic gene circuit integrated into the budding yeast genome to model experimentally the adaptation of a stress response module and its host genome in three different scenarios. In agreement with computational predictions, we find that: (i) intra‐module mutations target and eliminate the module if it confers only cost without any benefit to the cell; (ii) intra‐ and extra‐module mutations jointly activate the module if it is potentially beneficial and confers no cost; and (iii) a few specific mutations repeatedly fine‐tune the modules noisy response if it has ...
An organized campaign by anti-vaccination groups to sow doubt about the effectiveness and safety of vaccines has helped push some vaccination rates among kindergarten-aged children in B.C. to their lowest levels in a decade.. And that campaign - which health officials say is riddled with misinformation, bad science and paranoia - is likely going to result in more outbreaks of the kind that made more than 200 unvaccinated people sick with the measles in the Fraser Valley this month.. Another group, the Vancouver-based Vaccine Resistance Network, is run by Joel Lord, who operates their website from his East Vancouver home.. Lord is a prolific writer, having published scores of articles on the VRMs website. His organization held an anti-vaccine summit in Vancouver last year. He promotes what he calls a vaccine-free natural approach, because he believes the chemicals in vaccines are behind severe damage to childrens developing brains.. Lord says the movement is getting help from high-profile ...

I am often asked what trends I see for data warehousing and CRM. While there are quite a number of them, in this first column of 2001, I list a few that will undoubtedly receive serious attention this year - the ones related to preparing and expanding data warehouses to support CRM. If your company is following a strategy of competitive advantage through customer relationships, you will want to be sure your CRM-ready data warehouse is enabled to support all activities.. A CRM-ready data warehouse is an architecture for data delivery in support of the strategy of customer intimacy - the most effective way of competing in business today. It enables the management of improved overall customer satisfaction and the ability to segment customers and treat them as individuals rather than as part of a collective group. Weve all heard that it costs 10 times as much to acquire a new customer as it does to keep an existing customer, but it is not good enough to stop there. Its going to cost 100 times more ...
