Students in this course focus on the representation and manipulation of information in relational database management systems. Students learn how to map real-world concepts onto relational representations and how to manipulate them through relational queries to implement data-intensive applications. Students also learn to use a core subset of the structured query language (SQL) and how relational databases fit into a wide variety of practical information systems ...
Relational database management system A relational database management system (RDBMS) is a database management system (DBMS) that stores databases based on the relational database model. The RDBMS places content into relationships and stores data in very simple structured database tables. It regulates administration of databases and regulates access to databases. DBMS always ensure database integrity by using the following constraints:

An extensible rules engine that uses database technology provides a rules evaluation service for applications external to the database server or database management system. Applications are able to utilize the rules engine to provide alternative behaviors based on information against which specified conditions are evaluated. A framework is provided for specifying data definitions that can be referenced by user-defined rules, through creation and use of an evaluation context. Application-specific data types can be defined by specifying data tables and/or variables that can be referenced by rules created for evaluation against data that is associated with the evaluation context. The data against which rules are evaluated can be provided as an in-memory object. A security model is provided in which the privilege to create rules according to a particular evaluation context is controlled by one privilege, whereas the privilege to access underlying tables or variables is controlled by another privilege.
A secure multilevel object oriented database management system which maintains data confidentiality and optimizes data integrity. All requests for database operations are mediated through an access validation monitor (AVM). The AVM is responsible for performing the following duties: applying mandatory and discretionary access control rules for each request it services to ensure the request is allowable; constructing views of multilevel objects ensuring that the clearance level of the subject making the request dominates the classification of the data being requested; managing data update requests so as to allow polyinstantiation only upon receiving explicit requests from the subject, the explicit request being accomplished through an update to the associated semantic vector (Semantic vectors are employed to maintain data integrity); detecting erroneous polyinstantiation attempts and flagging such errors to the requesting subject; and managing the creation of new multilevel objects, and enforces entity

A relational database is a digital database based on the relational model of data, as proposed by E. F. Codd in 1970. A software system used to maintain relational databases is a relational database management system (RDBMS). Virtually all relational database systems use SQL (Structured Query Language) for querying and maintaining the database. This model organizes data into one or more tables (or "relations") of columns and rows, with a unique key identifying each row. Rows are also called records or tuples. Columns are also called attributes. Generally, each table/relation represents one "entity type" (such as customer or product). The rows represent instances of that type of entity (such as "Lee" or "chair") and the columns representing values attributed to that instance (such as address or price). Each row in a table has its own unique key. Rows in a table can be linked to rows in other tables by adding a column for the unique key of the linked row (such columns are known as foreign keys). ...
A Value Analyzer system is a data-driven computer-facilitated financial model that provides accurate and consistent profitability calculations using account and event data stored in a relational database managed by a relational database management system (RDBMS), wherein the account data comprises attributes of the accounts being measured and the event data comprises attributes of account-related transactions. A selector function uses selection criteria to select accounts and events from the relational database in order to generate a number of inputs for profitability calculations.

Since the National Health Service reforms were introduced, the NHS has moved towards a greater emphasis on accountability and efficiency of healthcare. These changes rely on the swift delivery of IT systems, implemented into the NHS because of the urgency to collect data to support these measures. The case study details the events surrounding the introduction of a patient data management system into an intensive care unit in a UK hospital. It shows that its implementation was complex and involved organisational issues related to the costing of healthcare, legal and purchasing requirements, systems integration, training and staff expertise, and relationships with suppliers. It is suggested that the NHS is providing an R&D environment which others are benefiting from. The NHS is supporting software development activities that are not recognised, and the true costs of this task are difficult to estimate. It is also argued that introducing PDMS crystallises many different expectations making them ...

Anyone who believes that digitization is a passing trend is completely mistaken. Digitization wont stop, not now, and certainly not in the future. Its better to get on board than to stick your head in the sand and hope for the storm to pass. But how? By clinging to an old-fashioned world where IT leads a niche existence populated by nerds, businesses will not be able to defend their preferential spot at the table long term-despite their high level of engineering expertise. The message is: Get out of the standard IT rut and into decentralized, flexible, agile programming in collaboration with customers. This is the only way to successfully transform into a digital business. Technologically, this can be done with Software AGs Digital Business Platform 2.0. It helps companies combine existing systems on-premises and in the cloud into a single platform to optimize and digitize their businesses. The article shows how it works.. View now (2 Pages). ...

One purpose of the biomedical literature is to report results in sufficient detail that the methods of data collection and analysis can be independently replicated and verified. Here we present reporting guidelines for gene expression localization experiments: the minimum information specification for in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry experiments (MISFISHIE). MISFISHIE is modeled after the Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment (MIAME) specification for microarray experiments. Both guidelines define what information should be reported without dictating a format for encoding that information. MISFISHIE describes six types of information to be provided for each experiment: experimental design, biomaterials and treatments, reporters, staining, imaging data and image characterizations. This specification has benefited the consortium within which it was developed and is expected to benefit the wider research community. We welcome feedback from the scientific community to

Organisations are increasingly relying on business analytics to get value from the very data they generate in their day to day operations. In order to gain maximum effective results from this data, it has to be reorganised to reflect this new use at the enterprise level rather than at the operational level. When data is reorganised to meet this need, there is a real risk that the semantics of the data will be compromised and that data integrity can be violated. Hence, students will learn how data can be captured and reorganised properly without causing such issues. Specifically, this unit introduces students to a number of topics in data management, including relational database management, data warehousing and ETL, as well as big data management and analytics. At the end of this unit, students will understand broad issues concerning data management, gain basic skills in manipulating data in different environments, and will have the adequate knowledge to progress on to the advanced units in the ...

Background: Comparative analysis of RNA sequences is the basis for the detailed and accurate predictions of RNA structure and the determination of phylogenetic relationships for organisms that span the entire phylogenetic tree. Underlying these accomplishments are very large, wellorganized, and processed collections of RNA sequences. This data, starting with the sequences organized into a database management system and aligned to reveal their higher-order structure, and patterns of conservation and variation for organisms that span the phylogenetic tree, has been collected and analyzed. This type of information can be fundamental for and have an influence on the study of phylogenetic relationships, RNA structure, and the melding of these two fields. Results: We have prepared a large web site that disseminates our comparative sequence and structure models and data. The four major types of comparative information and systems available for the three ribosomal RNAs (5S, 16S, and 23S rRNA), transfer ...

Although many statistic students have the opportunity to apply for data analysis courses during their studies, most lack the experience and knowledge of information technologies. This experience can be learned in this interdisciplinary data analysis and data management course, which is a joined project, including the faculties of statistics, IT and mathematics under the general management of the statistic department. ...
