Relational database - Wikipedia
A relational database is a digital database based on the relational model of data, as proposed by E. F. Codd in 1970. A software system used to maintain relational databases is a relational database management system (RDBMS). Virtually all relational database systems use SQL (Structured Query Language) for querying and maintaining the database. This model organizes data into one or more tables (or relations) of columns and rows, with a unique key identifying each row. Rows are also called records or tuples. Columns are also called attributes. Generally, each table/relation represents one entity type (such as customer or product). The rows represent instances of that type of entity (such as Lee or chair) and the columns representing values attributed to that instance (such as address or price). Each row in a table has its own unique key. Rows in a table can be linked to rows in other tables by adding a column for the unique key of the linked row (such columns are known as foreign keys). ...
Database Management | German-Russian Software Engineering
Almost every software system nowadays deals with data management. With the growing amount of data, it becomes even more important to understand in depth how the conventional database management systems realize and optimize single and bulk CRUD operations. That is why we always have our dedicated database experts onboard to provide development teams with support in designing and customizing database layers that utilize DBMS specifics. In many cases our customers want their software to be compatible with different DBMS systems, so the common approach we employ is creating a database abstraction layer and moving all the DBMS-specific tuning to a dedicated database implementation layer.. Our team members have practical experience and always attend trainings and seminars in most commonly used database management systems such as:. ...
NoSQL | UB CSE IT Service Catalog
In computing, NoSQL is a term used to designate database management systems that differ from classic relational database management systems in some way. These data stores may not require fixed table schemas, and usually avoid join operations and typically scale horizontally. Academics and papers typically refer to these databases as structured storage, a term that would include classic relational databases as a subset. Notable production implementations include Googles BigTable, Amazons Dynamo and Cassandra used by Facebook and others. ...
Definition
An object database management system (ODBMS, also referred to as object-oriented database management system or OODBMS), is a database management system (DBMS) that supports the modelling and creation of data as objects. This includes some kind of support for classes of objects and the inheritance of class properties and methods by subclasses and their objects.. In their influential paper, The Object-Oriented Database System Manifesto, Malcolm Atkinson and others define an OODBMS in 1995 as follows: An object-oriented database system must satisfy two criteria: it should be a DBMS, and it should be an object-oriented system, i.e., to the extent possible, it should be consistent with the current crop of object-oriented programming languages. The first criterion translates into five features: persistence, secondary storage management, concurrency, recovery and an ad hoc query facility. The second one translates into eight features: complex objects, object identity, encapsulation, types or classes, ...

Database Management
Database is necessary to operate large quantities of information by inputting, storing, retrieving, and managing that information. Databases are set up so that one set of software programs provides all users with access to all the data. The Database management system is specifically designed keeping in mind the successful and efficient creation, Updation & administration of various databases. The effective use of these DBMs leads to efficient running of companys business operations. A good database design is essential for a high-performance application. Without optimized relationships, your database wont perform as efficiently as possible.. One of the important ways for the database to perform well is when its storage capacity is maintained. This means one should take care to store only limited important data and avoid any data duplication to save essential space. The database design process essentially refers to producing a detailed and fully attributed data model which contains attributes of ...

Designing Indexes and Keys
The structure of indexes and keys in relational databases may affect significantly the physical organization of data and thus the performance during data manipulation. Sometimes, their selection is either random or automatically generated by ORM or other frameworks or tools, which may seriously threaten the performance and is most often detected in late phases of the project, when changing data scheme is more expensive. In order to avoid such consequences, we must pay attention to the selection and design of keys and indexes.. Relational model defines the concept of keys, but also the concept of uniqueness constraint which are often mixed up during implementation. The main difference lies in the fact that the key attribute cannot be NULL, i.e. must have a determined value. From the relational model standpoint, the order of attributes in key (or uniqueness) constraint and the mutual order of tuples are irrelevant.. As a relational database management system, SQL Server offers objects that provide ...

Statistical query-based rule derivation system by backward elimination algorithm
Computers play a serious role in human life, especially web-based applications running twenty four hours per day. These applications are based on relational database management system and they receive many queries from the users. These queries are executed in the commercial systems one by one without any consideration of past experiences and data analysis. The execution of queries can be faster if some rules were derived from the past queries. In this paper, we propose a statistical query-based rule derivation system by the backward elimination algorithm, which analysis the data based on the past queries in order to derive new rules, and then it uses these rules for the execution of new queries. The computational results are presented and analysed that the system is very efficient and promising.
Armin Roth: Efficient Query Answering in Peer Data Management Systems - Oak project, Inria Saclay
Peer Data Management Systems (PDMS) consist of a volatile set of peers. Each of them answers queries against its own schema by exploiting both local data and by passing queries to neighboring peers along so-called schema mappings. PDMS are highly flexible due to their decentral nature, but query answering has only limited scalability due to the massive redundancy in the paths along which queries get routed. Additionally, repeated query rewriting often leads to increasing information loss.. Our work is based on the idea to trade completeness of query answers for speed of execution, thus turning completeness from a requirement into an optimization goal. To this end, peers can prune those paths during query answering for which they estimate a bad cost/benefit ratio. However, estimating this ratio in highly distributed systems as PDMS is difficult. We present a technique based on self-adaptive multidimensional histograms that are updated by exploiting the queries passing through the network. Based ...

LabLynx LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) - Implementation
Since the Phage Φ-X174 was sequenced in 1977,[13] the DNA sequences of thousands of organisms have been decoded and stored in databases. This sequence information is analyzed to determine genes that encode polypeptides (proteins), RNA genes, regulatory sequences, structural motifs, and repetitive sequences. A comparison of genes within a species or between different species can show similarities between protein functions, or relations between species (the use of molecular systematics to construct phylogenetic trees). With the growing amount of data, it long ago became impractical to analyze DNA sequences manually. Today, computer programs such as BLAST are used daily to search sequences from more than 260,000 organisms, containing over 190 billion nucleotides.[14] These programs can compensate for mutations (exchanged, deleted, or inserted bases) in the DNA sequence, to identify sequences that are related, but not identical. A variant of this sequence alignment is used in the sequencing process ...

object oriented database vs relational database
Some examples of OODBMS are Versant Object Database, Objectivity/DB, ObjectStore, Caché and ZODB. The talks are intended as one-hour introductions for an audience of computer professionals, assumed to be technically competent but not familiar with the topics discussed. ::What is an object oriented database? As mentioned, earlier RDBMS is based on the relational model and data in a RDMS are stored in the form of related tables. Avoids the complexities and limitations of ORM products such as Hibernate by storing objects directly with their relationships intact. This system supports objects, classes and inheritance in database schemas and query language. A relational database wfollows Cobbs relational model as defined in his papers more than 20 years ago, wporking with TABLES of data that are RELATED to each other (thus the term relational… Object Oriented Databases. Object-oriented database design is not only a simple extension of relational database design. The object-oriented database (OODB) ...

Implementation Architectures in VS .NET Generate Quick Response Code in VS .NET Implementation Architectures
Implementation architectures vary according to the degree to which the Web services layer is apportioned value in the overall solution In providing a Web services interface to a database management system, for example, the primary value of the solution remains apportioned within the database layer rather than in the Web services layer The Web services layer becomes one of many options for interacting with the data in the database On the other hand, the Microsoft My Services initiative apportions significant value to the ability of multiple Web services to interact in combination and to create applications differently or more quickly by using them Implementations vary in the value assigned to the Web services layer Because Web services are not executable, much of the value in the development environment, such as J2EE and the NET Framework, remains within the programming languages beneath the Web services Web services represent another means of exchanging information with the application server, ...

J B. AU - Broughton, P.. PY - 2004/2. Y1 - 2004/2. N2 - Techniques for performance estimation in parallel database systems are well established for parameters such as throughput, bottlenecks and resource utilisation. However, response time estimation is a complex activity which is difficult to predict and has attracted research for a number of years. Simulation is one option for predicting response time but this is a costly process. Analytical modelling is a less expensive option but requires approximations and assumptions about the queueing networks built up in real parallel database machines which are often questionable and few of the papers on analytical approaches are backed by results from validation against real machines. This paper describes a new analytical approach for response time ...

An example of an Object-relational Mapper in PHP | Ekini.net by Wenbert Del Rosario
Data management tasks in object-oriented (OO) programming are typically implemented by manipulating objects that are almost always non-scalar values. For example, consider an address book entry that represents a single person along with zero or more phone numbers and zero or more addresses. This could be modeled in an object-oriented implementation by a person object with slots to hold the data that comprise the entry: the persons name, a list of phone numbers, and a list of addresses. The list of phone numbers would itself contain phone number objects and so on. The address book entry is treated as a single value by the programming language (it can be referenced by a single variable, for instance). Various methods can be associated with the object, such as a method to return the preferred phone number, the home address, and so on.. However, many popular database products such as structured query language database management systems (SQL DBMS) can only store and manipulate scalar values ...
