Background: The ovaries can be the site for various primary tumors and also the presenting site of metastatic disease. Quick and correct intraoperative diagnosis is crucial for the patients further management. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the advantages of the combined diagnostic method - ovarian frozen sections in conjunction with cytologic smears. Methods: From June 2016 to June 2017, we prospectively prepared additional two cytologic smears with Diff-Quik stain on ovarian frozen sections comprised of two hematoxylin and eosin sections. For quality assurance purposes, we compared the results of frozen section discrepancies and deferrals with those that of the previous year from June 2015 to June 2016. Results: With the introduction of cytologic smears to ovarian frozen sections, the number of discrepancies and deferrals combined decreased from 13.75% to 7.85%. ThinPrep (TP) and TriPath PREP (TriP) are two liquid-based cytologic preparations that produce a thin layer of cells. This study compares the diagnostic accuracy and different cytomorphologic alterations produced by these preparations in nongynecologic specimens. Samples from 10 urines (3 urothelial carcinomas and 7 negative), 4 positive serous fluids, and 7 fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) were prepared by both techniques. FNAs represented one each of: Hashimotos thyroiditis (HT), hyperplastic colloid nodule (HCN), Hodgkins lymphoma, liposarcoma, chondrosarcoma, squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) metastatic to the lymph node, and carcinoid tumor. All 5 participants, none of whom had prior knowledge of the clinical history or histologic diagnosis, reviewed and interpreted the slides. In this study, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of EUS-FNA in the diagnosis of pancreatic and peripancreatic mass lesion was 82%, 89%, and 83%, respectively. This is not substantially different from those of previous studies published abroad reporting sensitivity of 72-94% and specificity of 76-91%.3,7-10 However, inadequacy rate in our study was 12% which is higher than 1.5-4.0% inadequacy rate reported by previous studies. This difference arose because most previous studies unlike ours performed EUS-FNA with the help of on-site cytopathologic evaluation. Inadequacy rate in studies in which on-site cytopathologic evaluation was not available ranged from 9-20% which is similar to our results.5,6 In our study, negative predictive value was low at 46% but negative predictive value has been reported to be low in previous studies also. Anal cytology has increasingly been used to screen for anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) among men who have sex with men (MSM) at increased risk for anal cancer. Costs associated with liquid-based cytology, however, may limit its use in resource-limited settings.Anal swab samples were collected from MSM participants and used to prepare conventional and liquid-based cytology slides. Abnormal conventional cytology results triggered referral for high-resolution anoscopy and biopsy. Sampling techniques are combined during bronchoscopy to increase the diagnostic yield for endobronchial malignant tumours. Bronchial biopsy provides the definitive histological diagnosis in most cases, but accompanying cytological procedures such as washing, brushing, needle aspiration or imprint cytology can increase diagnostic yield. In this prospective study, a different cytological technique, that could enhance the diagnostic yield of bronchoscopy without increasing its time or cost, was tested. Flexible bronchoscopy was performed in 93 patients suspected of having pulmonary neoplasms. Bronchial biopsies were initially placed in a balanced salt solution. Frankly invasive carcinoma is usually diagnosed in women with symptoms suggesting cancer but cytology may sometimes be taken as part of the investigation. Cytology is regarded as unreliable in clinical cancer because associated haemorrhage and inflammation tends to obscure the nuclear detail. A recent study from the NHS Cervical Screening Programme has shown that cytology in symptomatic young women (20-29 years) with cancer may be more reliable than formerly thought (Landy et al. 2015). The examination of brush cytology specimens has become an established diagnostic technique in the investigation of patients with suspected pancreatic, bile duct, gallbladder, and ampullary tumours. We have reviewed 448 consecutive brush samples obtained from 406 patients and correlated the findings with pathological and clinical outcomes. To our knowledge, this is the largest series of pancreatico-biliary brush cytology specimens yet reported.. As with previous studies, we found that the brush cytology technique produced cellular samples of good quality in most instances.
