Cypress swamps are communities that are dominated by bald cypress trees. These ecosystems assume differences in response to abiotic and biotic factors. The big cypress swamp, much of which is in Big Cypress National Preserve, is mostly composed of these types of communities.. Other plants growing in the understory of big cypress swamp, are swamp fern, spikerush and marsh fleabane. Among the woody plants found in the understory are buttonbush, cocoplum, willow and wax myrtle.. Growing on the trunks and branches of the cypress trees are epiphytes or airplants. Epiphytic plants attach themselves to other living plants, in this case the cypress trees. Instead of having its roots in the soil they are wrapped around the cypress tree to keep it securely in place. Well know epiphytes in the Big Cypress National Preserve are bromeliads and orchids. Epiphytes use photosynthesis to create its own food and obtain moisture from humidity, like fog and rain.. Cypress trees grow in water and are found growing ...

A former British colony, Cyprus became independent in 1960 following years of resistance to British rule. Tensions between the Greek Cypriot majority and Turkish Cypriot minority came to a head in December 1963, when violence broke out in the capital of Nicosia. Despite the deployment of UN peacekeepers in 1964, sporadic intercommunal violence continued, forcing most Turkish Cypriots into enclaves throughout the island. In 1974, a Greek Government-sponsored attempt to overthrow the elected president of Cyprus was met by military intervention from Turkey, which soon controlled more than a third of the island. In 1983, the Turkish Cypriot administered area declared itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" ("TRNC"), but it is recognized only by Turkey. A UN-mediated agreement, the Annan Plan, failed to win approval by both communities in 2004. In February 2014, after a hiatus of nearly two years, the leaders of the two communities resumed formal discussions under UN auspices aimed at ...

NICOSIA (CNA/ANA-MPA) President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Thursday that the Greek Cypriot side shares common views with the Turkish Cypriot side but has serious differences with Turkey regarding the interpretation of a federal solution of the Cyprus problem. The president stressed that Turkey cannot expect to join the EU as long as the Cyprus problem remains unsolved. In his opening statement at a lunch hosted by CNA for foreign correspondents in Cyprus, President Christofias said Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has shifted his stance compared to the shared views they had as leaders of political parties, noting that Turkey has a serious role to play in a Cyprus settlement. He said his vision was the reunification of Cyprus and its people, and for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to determine their fate, adding that the interpretation Turkey is giving for a new partnership of two equal states is unacceptable. Regarding the direct negotiations he has been ...
Cyprus - Government and society: The constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, adopted in 1960, provided that executive power be exercised by a Greek Cypriot president and a Turkish Cypriot vice president, elected to five-year terms by universal suffrage, and that there be a Council of Ministers (cabinet) comprising seven Greek Cypriot and three Turkish Cypriot members. It also called for an elected House of Representatives with 50 seats, divided between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the proportion of 35 to 15 and elected for terms of five years. The constitution, derived from the negotiations in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1959 between representatives of the governments

Undersea cable maps show Cyprus at the hub of numerous fibre-optic undersea cables making it a natural site to spy on the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern communications. A number of cables connect Cyprus to Israel and Syria, obvious targets for Anglo-American spying. Other cables run from Cyprus to Lebanon, Cyprus to Egypt and Turkey, to Greece and Italy, and so on.. The major SEA-ME-WE3 cable connecting South East Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe also comes ashore on the little island country. In total over a dozen strategic cables are accessible in Cyprus and more are planned. It is an ideal site for monitoring communications in the Middle East and surrounding countries. ...

There was little sign of the mass panic some feared wouldoccur as banks reopened in Cyprus following a forced closurelasting nearly two weeks. The economy of the Turkish Cypriot-administered area is dominated by the services sector including the public sector, trade, tourism and education, with smaller agriculture and light manufacturing sectors. The economy operates on a free-market basis, although it continues to be handicapped by the political isolation of Turkish Cypriots, the lack of private and public investment, high freight costs, and shortages of skilled labor. Despite these constraints, the Turkish Cypriot economy turned in an impressive performance from 2003 to 2006, with estimated growth rates of 7.8% in 2006, 10.6% in 2005, 15.4% in 2004, and 11.4% in 2003. Over the same period, GDP per capita more than doubled; according to unofficial Turkish Cypriot statistics it reached $11,802 by the end of 2006. This growth has been buoyed by the relative stability of the Turkish Lira, the employment of around 5,000 Turkish Cypriots in the Greek Cypriot economy where wages are significantly higher, and by a boom in the education and ...

Cyprus routinely detains asylum seekers and refugees in prison-like conditions, sometimes breaking European Union law by holding them for more than an 18-month maximum, Amnesty International said on Monday. While Cyprus is not one of the main routes for migrants to reach Europe, thousands do enter the island each year and Amnesty accused the government of using detention as a way of discouraging the flow.. By detaining scores of people for months at a time, Cyprus is displaying a chilling lack of compassion and a complete disregard for its international obligations, said Sherif Elsayed-Ali, head of refugee and migrants rights at Amnesty.. Cypriot authorities were not immediately available for comment, but have in past said they fully comply with international requirements on refugees.. The rights group highlighted the plight of Syrians fleeing civil war.. It is incomprehensible that the Cypriot authorities are detaining Syrian nationals ... when it is Cyprus official policy not to return ...

So Cyprus has decided to shaft the rich Russians in preference to the poor Cypriots, preserving deposits under €100K while completely screwing deposits in excess of that amount by setting up a "bad bank" which is going to return cents in the Euro to the large depositors. Apparently this will disproportionately affect rich Russians who bank in Cyprus, and one can only speculate about how well these gentlemen will take the asset confiscation. Belgian poet Herman van Rompuy brokered the deal on behalf of the EU, and so I assume that he doesnt plan to travel to Russia on vacation any time soon. The Streetwise Professor points to Germany as the ultimate determinant of the direction of the Cyprus settlement and wonders ...
Abstract: Genetics can provide invaluable information on the ancestry of the current inhabitants of Cyprus. A Y-chromosome analysis was performed to (i) determine paternal ancestry among the Greek Cypriot (GCy) community in the context of the Central and Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East; and (ii) identify genetic similarities and differences between Greek Cypriots (GCy) and Turkish Cypriots (TCy). Our haplotype-based analysis has revealed that GCy and TCy patrilineages derive primarily from a single gene pool and show very close genetic affinity (low genetic differentiation) to Calabrian Italian and Lebanese patrilineages. In terms of more recent (past millennium) ancestry, as indicated by Y-haplotype sharing, GCy and TCy share much more haplotypes between them than with any surrounding population (7-8% of total haplotypes shared), while TCy also share around 3% of haplotypes with mainland Turks, and to a lesser extent with North Africans. In terms of Y-haplogroup frequencies, again GCy ...

The food of Cyprus reflects the rich and turbulent history of the island and its indelible Greek culture. You will find tastes influenced by the Middle East, Asia Minor and the Venetians, all using fresh local ingredients, herbs and spices and olive oil. The Mediterranean diet, with its grains and pulses, sun-ripened fresh fruit and vegetables, high-protein fish, lean meat and poultry and wine, is a healthy option.. Cyprus has a long tradition in winemaking that goes back over 4,000 years. In ancient times wine was a major source of wealth for the island. The island supplied the Pharaohs of Egypt and Cyprus wines were in great demand amongst the ancient Greeks and Romans.. Commandaria is acknowledged to be the oldest wine in the world and was probably the first to be given an Appellation dOrigin(label of geographical origin). Legend says that Commandaria was originally made for Richard the Lionheart and the Crusaders. The dessert wine, which has a taste like sweet sherry, has been made using ...
Anastasiades has gone to town on this, writing to EU governments, to complain and seek their views/support as well as sending a letter of complaint to the UN Secretary-General. He cleverly tried to present this as a problem for the EU, arguing that such an agreement would allow entry into EU countries of 70 million Turks, presumably via Cyprus and sought to secure the support of the European Commission.. No public support has been given by the Commission, even though the Cyprus News Agency quoting a Commission source, claimed yesterday after Anastasiades meeting with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, that there was agreement between the two on the Turkish demand on the four freedoms. The government also said that Juncker had agreed the demand was not a bilateral issue but an issue for the whole of the EU.. Even if Juncker agreed in private, as the government claimed, there was no way he would take a public stand on the matter, because the Commission wants a Cyprus settlement ...
Aerosols influence clouds by changing their colour and their ability to form snow and rain. This interaction between aerosols and clouds is one of the immediate topics of weather and climate research. Cyprus is a unique place where this interaction can be studied especially well, because the island is influenced by a large variety of air pollutants, desert dust, and marine salt particles (See Fig. 1). Cyprus is located in an arid climate zone and, hence, on the edge between moderate mid-latitude and dry desert climate. Rain is vital for the island, but annual rainfall changes storngly between years. The eastern Mediterranean is a hot-spot area of climate change but direct measurements of aerosols, clouds and their dynamic interactions in this area are missing. The CyCARE campaign - a common initiative between the Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol and TROPOS - will fill a gap in the global understanding of aerosol-cloud interaction. The role of different aerosol types on cloud and rain ...

This is prehistoric," said James Holland, the recently retired Altamaha Riverkeeper whos leading the tour. "No ifs, ands or buts about it.". Sunlight peaks in from the trees chimney. A tiny Rafinesques big-eared bat swoops overhead and perches just below a window-like opening, twitching nervously.. This tree is something.. And its not even the biggest cypress in the stand in McIntosh County.. That honor belongs to another ancient nearby. State biologists measured its trunk circumference at 44 feet, 5 inches at breast height. That makes it larger than the official state champion cypress, though it hasnt been registered yet.. "I bet you Columbus hadnt come here when that tree had sprouted," Holland said.. It could well be true. Cypress are hard to age because they grow hollow, but Matt Elliott of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources estimates the big trees in this tract are at least 700 years old.. Even their knees are enormous, easily topping 15 feet.. "Look at the height of these ...

Question:. There is a lot of sap bleeding out of the trunk of my Leland cypress tree. What is wrong with the tree? Answer:. An insect called the cypress bark beetle attacks cypress and juniper trees. The first evidence of the insects attack is flagging of the branch ends. When the branch flags, the branch breaks several inches from the end where it has been fed upon by the beetle, weakening the branch. The end of the branch then turns brown. As the level of infestation increases, the insects begin to attack the trunk of the tree. The sap on the trunk may be evidence that the trunk is under attack. After the adult insects bore into the trunk and lay eggs, the young larvae hatch from the eggs and begin feeding on the phloem and cambium tissues just under the bark. This girdles the tree, interrupting the flow of sugars from the leaves to the roots. After a time the roots die from lack of food. They stop sending water and minerals to the leaves that then appear to die suddenly. As the top dies, the ...

The Solidarity Movement (Greek: Κίνημα Αλληλεγγύη, Kinima Allilengyi) is a Greek Cypriot nationalist party in Cyprus. It was founded in 2016 by Eleni Theocharous. Theocharous departed the conservative Democratic Rally in November 2015, in protest to their support of a bizonal, bifederal settlement to the Cyprus problem. She established the Solidarity Movement in January 2016 and right-wing Evroko merged with the party in March of the same year.[2] The Solidarity Movement is contesting 56 seats in the 2016 Cypriot legislative election.[3][4] On 9 March 2016, Eleni Theocharous joined the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists, after she retired from the Democratic Rally and the European Peoples Party.[5] ...

Posted on 03/19/2013 11:40:40 AM PDT by abb. Cyprus parliament rejects haircut bill The Cypriot House of Representatives rejected overwhelmingly on Tuesday the bill that would have inflicted a haircut on bank accounts. There were 36 No votes and not a single Yes vote, as the 19 deputies of ruling Democratic Rally (DISY) who were present abstained, while another one of them was absent. Cyprus speaker Yiannakis Omirou urged MPs to say «no to blackmail» as angry crowds also called for a «No» vote outside Parliament and held up signs warning that other financially crippled European nations like Italy and Spain could be next in line. There can only be one answer: no to blackmail,» Omirou, of the socialist EDEK party told deputies who met in emergency session. Our demand must be that this deal must be renegotiated. If we pass this tax there will be no foreign investor who will keep their money here,» he warned. There is no doubt, this is the most crucial session of our parliament. There is ...
