Cynara cardunculus L. is a perennial species, with the autumnal-spring growth cycle and summer quiescence period. It comprises three taxa: C. cardunculus L. subsp. scolymus (L.) Hegi (globe artichoke), C. cardunculus L. var. altilis DC (cultivated cardoon) and C. cardunculus L. var. sylvestris Lam. (wild cardoon). In C. cardunculus the roots play an important role for assimilate accumulation and translocation, in fact they represent the reserve organ of the plant, especially during the summer when the aboveground biomass gets dry. Few information are available about the trend in assimilate accumulation and translocation among the three C. cardunculus taxa. This work aiming to study the genetic variation for dry matter accumulation and translocation in C. cardunculus taxa. To reach the aim of this work, during 2001-2002 growth season, at Catania location, in an experimental design with three replications one globe artichoke, one cultivated cardoon and one wild cardoon were grown. During the ...

Ci sarà tempo per ritornare a discorsi di ordine più teorico.. -------------------------------. Cynara cardunculus subsp. cardunculus Hayek - Asteraceae. Native to the Mediterranean area; the basal leaves were used as medicine as far back as ancient Roman times. It was used, as was characteristic of bitter remedies, primarily as a digestive and liver aid, to help stimulate the appetite, provide relief from nausea, stomach ache, flatulence, and a sense of fullness. More recently it has been described as liver protective, a choleretic, and a cholagogue. As with many members of the Asteraceae, it contains bitter-tasting sesquiterpene lactones, although the most characteristic and active compounds are ...

The artichoke tea is a delicious drink that is very popular in South America and Vietnam. The artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) is used in the whole history for its medicinal value. The majority of the curative properties that the artichoke has, exist due to its active principle, the cinarina. The cinarina has been studied very much lately for its effects on reducing the cholesterol. Those that appreciate the alternative medicine can tell you the wonders the artichoke tea can do for you. The Artichoke tea has properties that can help you to reduce the levels of cholesterol, they help to attack the cancer due to the antioxidant capacity that it has. Zeus had a plan. He thought that whenever his wife Hera was away, hed get together with Cynara. However, Cynara soon became homesick. She missed her mother, so she slipped back to the earth for a short but meaningful visit with the mortals. When she returned, it was quite apparent that she had a new attitude. Zeus wasnt particularly happy with her un-goddess-like behavior. He threw a fit and tossed her back to earth, and he changed her into the plant that we now call the artichoke.. ...

When a breast cancer patient undergoes a lumpectomy to remove a cancerous tumor, its often followed by radiation therapy. Traditional radiation therapy can take an average of five weeks. But using the SAVI breast brachytherapy applicator allows patients to complete their radiation treatments in only five days.. SIUH is the first hospital in New York State to be recognized as a Center of Excellence for the SAVI treatment.. The SAVI applicator is made up of a slim bundle of soft and flexible catheters. A breast surgeon makes a small incision in a patients breast and places the device in the lumpectomy cavity.. Once inside, the catheters are expanded to conform to the site. Each catheter individually radiates the tissue surrounding the lumpectomy cavity from the inside out.. The reason to use a multi-catheter device is that we can control the dose of radiation for each of the catheters, so the catheters that are closest to the skin can get less radiation, explained Dr. Cynara Coomer, chief of ...

Globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) is an out-crossing, perennial, multi-use crop species that is grown worldwide and belongs to the Compositae, one of the most successful Angiosperm families. We describe the first genome sequence of globe artichoke. The assembly, comprising of 13,588 scaffolds covering 725 of the 1,084 Mb genome, was generated using ~133-fold Illumina sequencing data and encodes 26,889 predicted genes. Re-sequencing (30×) of globe artichoke and cultivated cardoon (C. cardunculus var. altilis) parental genotypes and low-coverage (0.5 to 1×) genotyping-by-sequencing of 163 F1 individuals resulted in 73% of the assembled genome being anchored in 2,178 genetic bins ordered along 17 chromosomal pseudomolecules. This was achieved using a novel pipeline, SOILoCo (Scaffold Ordering by Imputation with Low Coverage), to detect heterozygous regions and assign parental haplotypes with low sequencing read depth and of unknown phase. SOILoCo provides a powerful tool for de novo

The mean concentration for moisture in onion ranged from 85-95%, which can be considered as a usual range for the moisture of onions [37, 15]. The onions ash content was 0.35±0.03 g/100 g are similar to Ketiku [42] and lower than the results reported by other investigators [2, 74]. The protein content in onion and artichoke was in the range observed by Moreau et al. [53] but lower than that reported by other researchers [2, 36, 63]. However, several fractions related to the carbohydrate content were predominant in onions [65]. The present results showed that the carbohydrate in artichoke and onion accounts the major portions of dry matter contributing as much as 83.36 and 90.26% respectively. Similar results were obtained by Rodríguez-Cabezas et al. [64]. The principle component of these carbohydrates is a series of FOS fructosylpolymer of DP ranged from 3:10. These ...

1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise. Canola or olive oil. 1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. While you wait for that, remove any hard or dead looking leaves from the artichokes. Cut off the stem from each artichoke, setting them aside. Trim 1/2 inch from the top of each artichoke, then use scissors to remove the tips of any thorny leaves. Now split each artichoke in half. This makes cooking them much faster.. When the water comes to a boil, add the artichoke halves and stems. Throw in the bay leaf, peppercorns, and garlic. Cover and vigorously simmer until tender. I estimated 30 to 45 minutes for my artichokes but the cooking time depends on the size and variety of artichokes. Check the cooking progress every fifteen minutes or so. When done, a leaf should pull away easily but the artichoke should not be mushy. Use tongs to remove the artichokes from the pot, placing them on a plate, cut side down, to drain and cool. The artichokes can be prepped up to 2 days in advance. Return them to room ...

have been developed , but none were appropriate to the present study as they require more than two samplings in a time series (Bollback et al. 2008; Feder et al. 2014). Our test for nonneutral temporal variations in SNP allele frequencies detected 26 genomic areas, mainly located on chromosomes 2B, 4B, 5A, and 6B (Figure 5). We checked that the detected SNPs also yielded the lowest P-values with the method developed in Goldringer and Bataillon (2004) and therefore would also have been identified as the best candidates. Note that chromosomes 2B and 4B were among those for which many parental contributions estimated at the chromosome level diverged from their genome-wide estimations (Table S4). This highlights the complex interaction between parental contribution estimates and the selection test: strong selection might bias parental estimates and thus decrease the power of the selection detection test itself. Effectively, parental contribution estimates are those best fitting the allele ...
