Introduction. One of the earliest derived features of the hominin clade is canine tooth size reduction, with a decrease in sexual dimorphism in canine crown height, and the loss of maxillary canine tooth honing against the lower third premolar that occurs in most primate species. Canine tooth crown reduction was originally thought to have first appeared in Australopithecus,1 but now is known to have characterised even earlier taxa - Sahelanthropus,2 Orrorin,3 Ardipithecus kadabba4,5,6 and Ardipithecus ramidus.7,8,9,10 However, the morphology of the Australopithecus canine-premolar complex is derived morphologically relative to these earlier hominins. Furthermore, canine tooth form appears to have changed throughout the early evolution of Australopithecus.9,11,12 The pattern and timing of canine evolution is significant for understanding early hominin evolution because alterations in canine tooth size and dimorphism constitute evidence of social and/or dietary adaptations.13,14. The earliest ...
Gray described the genus Neofelis as having an elongate skull, a broad and rather produced face on the same plane as the forehead, a large and elongate nasal, a moderate orbit, a truncated lower jaw and very long conical upper and lower canine teeth with a sharp cutting hinder edge. This skull has resemblances to that of the fossil Smilodon, with very much elongated upper canines.[5]. Pocock described the skull of Neofelis as recalling in general features that of Panthera pardus, especially in the shortness and wide separation of the frontal and malar postorbital processes, relative proportion of mandibular teeth; but differing in the greater posterior width of the nasals, the thicker, more salient inferior edge of the orbit, and the mandible being greatly elevated anteriorly.[6]. The Sunda clouded leopard has longer upper canines and a narrower palate between them.[8]. ...
Cristiane Aparecida de Assis Claro, Rosana Villela Chagas, Ana Christina Elias Claro Neves, Laís Regiane da Silva-Concílio. Objective: To compare dental and skeletal anchorages in mandibular canine retraction by means of a stress distribution analysis. Methods: A photoelastic model was produced from second molar to canine, without the first premolar, and mandibular canine retraction was simulated by a rubber band tied to two types of anchorage: dental anchorage, in the first molar attached to adjacent teeth, and skeletal anchorage with a hook simulating the mini-implant. The forces were applied 10 times and observed in a circular polariscope. The stresses located in the mandibular canine were recorded in 7 regions. The Mann-Whitney test was employed to compare the stress in each region and between both anchorage systems. The stresses in the mandibular canine periradicular regions were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: Stresses were similar in the cervical region and the middle ...
Objective: The aim was to study inter-examiner variation in detection of palatally displaced maxillary canines by using the palpation method, and to examine how different dental health care personnel evaluate the need for X-ray when ectopic eruption of maxillary canines is suspected. Materials and Methods: The subjects comprised 52 ten-year-olds (104 canines). Four investigators (2 dental students, dental hygienist and orthodontist) examined each patient by visually inspecting and palpating the developing maxillary canines into 4 categories according to the position of the non-erupted canine. The need for control radiograph to confirm the diagnosis was also included in the examination. The results were registered in a scheme. The statistical analysis was performed using kappa-analysis for interrater agreement. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated using the orthodontist as a gold standard. Results: When evaluating canines as palpable or not palpable the interrater agreement coefficient ...
The orthodontic treatment of a malocclusion with no canines is not a common condition. Permanent canine agenesis is rare, and maxillary canines can be positioned variably. They can be palatably or labially displaced, and the possibility of prior extraction should be assessed by the clinician. Canine extraction as a treatment goal is rare; thus, this condition can be called iatrogenic absence of the canines, which has not been well explored in the literature. In contrast, the situation of ectopically erupted canines might require extraction because of the difficult position and complicated orthodontic traction. Many investigators claim that a tooth-size discrepancy is an important element in diagnosis and should be measured in each orthodontic patient before starting treatment. However, when there are no maxillary canines, the Bolton discrepancy is evident; when associated with dental crowding and an Angle Class II molar relationship, it creates a more complicated treatment. It remains ...
Objectives: This cross-sectional observational study aimed at quantifying primary dentition parameters and exploring differences in those parameters between included age groups. Materials and Methods: The examined sample comprised 800 preschool children, 3- to 5-year-old in Benghazi city, of which 500 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Primary canine relationship, spacing/crowding, overjet (OJ) and overbite (OB), occlusal relationship was carried out using Federation Dentaire Internationale (1973), modified to the primary dentition. Results: The prevalence of bilateral Class I, Class II, and Class III canine relationship was 69.6%, 22.4%, and 4.4%, respectively. The prevalence of asymmetric canine relationship was 3.6% with no significant difference between gender and age groups. Spacing, closed dentition, and crowding were observed in: 81.6%, 13,4% and 5% respectively in the upper arch, and 58.5%, 24.8%, and 16.7% correspondently in the lower arch. OJ and OB ranging between 1 and 3 mm were found ...
Questions concerning maxillary canine transposition and maxillary canine agenesis remain unexplained. These questions are raised in this original hypothesis. The Hypothesis: The hypotheses are that the maxillary canine can be located in a separate dermatome field and that this field can overlap neighboring fields just as overlap occurs in body dermatomes. It is also hypothesized that delay in innervation and maturation of dermatome-like canine field may be the etiology behind maxillary canine agenesis and combined canine agenesis and first premolar agenesis. Evaluation of the Hypothesis: It is demonstrated in this article how embryology, growth, and development combined with clinical examples makes it possible to suggest answers to these rare questions concerning transposition and agenesis of the maxillary canines. The answers might be the foundation of future studies for genotypic mapping. All though the answers to these hypotheses seem reasonable, they are difficult to prove ...
The purpose of this study was to develop a new finite element method for simulating long-term tooth movements and to compare the movement process occurring in canine retraction using a T-loop spring having large bends and with that having small bends.. Orthodontic tooth movement was assumed to occur in the same manner as the initial tooth movement, which was controlled by the moment-to-force (M/F) ratios acting on the tooth. The M/F ratios were calculated as the reaction forces from the spring ends. For these M/F ratios, the teeth were moved based on the initial tooth movements, which were calculated by using the bilinear elastic model of the periodontal ligament. Repeating these calculations, the teeth were moved step by step while updating the M/F ratio.. In the spring with large bends, the canine at first moved bodily, followed by root distal tipping. The bodily movement was quickly achieved, but over a short distance. In the spring with small bends, the canine at first rotated and root ...
e-mail: [email protected]. ABSTRACT. Introduction: Impacted maxillary canines are a major problem and expense in orthodontic practice. It seems as though their incidence has risen in recent years. It had been noticed that fewer canines appeared to be impacted amongst patients who had been treated by orthotropics®, a form of treatment which involves proclining the incisors and expanding the maxilla. The objective was to compare the influence of Orthotropics on the ratio of impacted canines with matched averages from other populations. Methodology: Records over a five year period were taken from a practice specialising in Orthotropics. An audit of the incidence of impacted canines was taken and compared with average frequencies. Results: There appeared to be a zero incidence of impacted canines amongst patients from this practice who started treatment before the age of ten. This compares with an incidence of 3½ % in the wider range of older patients from comparative populations. Conclusion: ...
One cause of misaligned teeth (also known as malocclusion) is impacted canines. Give Art of Smile a call today to schedule an appointment about impacted canines!
If all goes normally, we have most of our permanent teeth as we enter puberty. Except, though, when it doesnt-sometimes incoming permanent teeth dont fully erupt, often because theres not enough room for them on the jaw. This can leave all or part of a tooth still up inside the gum and bones.. This condition is known as impaction, and it can cause problems with a persons bite and their smile. This is especially true of the upper canines, those pointed teeth located just under the eyes. Without them present, a persons smile can look oddly different. Moreover, it can worsen their bite and increase the risk of trauma and disease for nearby teeth.. Fortunately, there may be a way to coax impacted canines into erupting into their proper position on the jaw. It will involve, though, some minor surgery and orthodontic intervention to accomplish that feat.. First, though, a patient with missing canines should undergo a thorough orthodontic evaluation. This exam will reveal not only what may be ...

Upper canines in particular are the second most common teeth to become impacted. This often happens because of overcrowding or extra teeth, including baby teeth. Parents, be vigilant if your child began losing baby teeth later than most peers, or if he or she has a small mouth. Some patients canines also become impacted because of growths on the gum tissue. This is rare, but if you see a growth or your childs gums are bleeding, schedule an appointment with one of our dentists ...
The canine tooth of the upper jaw (also called a cuspid or eye tooth) is the second-most common tooth to become impacted. An impacted tooth is a tooth that fails to erupt completely into the mouth.
RESULTS: Mean overall canine retraction was 4.16 (1.62) mm with MOP and 3.06 (1.64) mm without. After adjusting for differences between jaws, all MOP groups exhibited significantly higher canine distalization than the control group: 0.89 mm more (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.19 to 1.59 mm; P = .01) in the MOP-4 group, 1.08 mm more (95% CI = 0.49 to 1.68 mm; P = .001) in the MOP-8 group and 1.33 mm more (95% CI = 0.55 to 2.10 mm; P = .002) in the MOP-12 group. All subjects reported pain associated with MOP with 60% classifying it as moderate and 15% severe. The main impact of this reported pain was related to chewing and speech ...

A cusp is an occlusal or incisal eminence on a tooth. Canine teeth, otherwise known as cuspids, each possess a single cusp, while premolars, otherwise known as bicuspids, possess two each. Molars normally possess either four or five cusps. In certain populations the maxillary molars, especially first molars, will possess a fifth cusp situated on the mesiolingual cusp known as the Cusp of Carabelli.. Buccal Cusp- One other variation of the upper first premolar is the Uto-Aztecan upper premolar. It is a bulge on the buccal cusp that is only found in Native American Indians, with highest frequencies of occurrence in Arizona. The name is not a dental term; it comes from a regional linguistic division of Native American Indian language groups.. Buccal-The side of a tooth that is adjacent to (or the direction towards) the inside of the cheek, as opposed to lingual or palatal, which refer to the side of a tooth adjacent to (or the direction towards) the tongue or palate, respectively. Although ...
Occupying a vast range, the wild boar has evolved into a number of subspecies (about 35 have been described, but not all may be valid). In Europe, male wild boars may reach a head-body length of 200 cm, and a weight of 200 kgs. The tail measures about 25 cm. Females are significantly smaller. Male wild boars grow tusks from both the upper and lower canines curving upwards. The top tusks are hollow and act as a permanent whetstone against which the lower tusks are continually sharpened. Females do not grow the upper sharpening tusks as do the males, and their lower tusks are smaller ...

In the present study, different retromolar space analyses were evaluated to compare the correlation of the space derived from these methods with the mesio-distal width of the MTM. In the first investigated method in which the distance between the distal surface of second molar to the line tangent to the most concave point on the anterior border of ramus was measured, the mean distance in patients with erupted MTM was 13.6 and 15.3 mm in females and males respectively. These results meet the Quiroz and Palma suggestion that this distance should be more than 14 mm (15).. In the next method, the distance between the distal surface of second molar to the anterior aspect of ramus along the functional occlusal plane was measured. The observed data for erupted cases were 14.6 and 16.1 mm in female and male subjects respectively. The same method which was applied by Hattab et al revealed 14.1 mm for females and 15 mm for males.5 However, in the study that was conducted by Venta et al. to design TME ...

Hyperparathyroidism with Dental Involvement. A Discussion of Examination, Diagnosis, and Operative Findings.. By Dr. V.W. Dedon, St. Paul, Minn.. Complaint. Miss A.J. came to my office January 6th, 1933, for a dental examination, complaining of teeth getting loose, fatigue, pain in limbs, nervousness, and irritability.. History. White female, age thirty years. For more than two years the patient said she had been tired on rising, especially in the legs. Later she had pain in the arms and was nervous and irritable, and stated that she had some kidney disturbance.. Examination. Teeth X-rayed. Sinuses checked and found clear. Teeth seemed loose, with pus flowing from around a number of them. X-rays revealed that the alveolar crest was gone around lower left bicuspids and lower right cuspid, bicuspids and molars. The upper right lateral, cuspid and bicuspid had cystic areas at apex, but were vital. Bone very thin in decalcified areas, especially below lower left biscuspid and cuspid.. Working ...
deciduous teeth, the 20 teeth of the first dentition, which are shed and replaced by the permanent teeth. They begin to calcify at about the fourth month of fetal life, and near the end of the sixth month they all have begun to develop. The first incisors appear at about the age of 6 1/2 months; they are followed by the second incisors 1/2 month later; and, within 1 1/2 months, by the maxillary incisors. The deciduous molars begin eruption a 1 year, and the deciduous canines approximately 4 months later. All the deciduous teeth are expected to erupt by the time the child is 2 1/2 years of age. The deciduous dentition formula (one side) is as follows ...

Abscess -A localized collection of pus in the skin or other body tissue caused by infection. Bicuspid -Premolar; the two-cupped tooth between the first molar and the cuspid. Calcification -A process in which tissue becomes hardened due to calcium deposits. Calculus -Plural, calculi. Any type of hard concretion (stone) in the body, but usually found in the gallbladder, pancreas, and kidneys. They are formed by the accumulation of excess mineral salts and other organic material such as blood or mucus. Calculi (pl.) can cause problems by lodging in and obstructing the proper flow of fluids, such as bile to the intestines or urine to the bladder. In dentistry, calculus refers to a hardened yellow or brown mineral deposit from unremoved plaque, also called tartar. Canines -The two sharp teeth located next to the front incisor teeth in mammals that are used to grip and tear. Also called cuspids. Crown -The natural part of the tooth covered by enamel. A restorative crown is a protective shell that fits ...

Next we talked about my broken tooth. I had a broken canine tooth when mom & dad adopted me and the vet said its still ok. Eventually it will start to die and may get infected and then it will have to be pulled. But its not giving me any problems so well just keep watching it for now. We joked a bit about getting a root canal. They do that for animals just like for humans. The vet said its expensive and we could do it if we had more money than sense. Weve had this vet for a long time, so he knows Mom would break out the credit card for whatever was in my best interest, but I dont think I need cosmetic dentistry. I think my broken tooth gives me extra character, and a little street cred (if I were ever allowed outside). That being said, if the vet said it was too risky to pull my tooth (broken bone or rupture into my nasal/sinus cavity), we would consider a root canal. Maybe I could get a gold cap to complement my gold eyes ...

I have been informed that examinations under anesthesia often reveal abnormally loose teeth that fall out or should be extracted to prevent oral discomfort and ongoing infection of surrounding bone. I also have been informed that the loss or removal of one or more unhealthy canine teeth occasionally allows for an awkward protrusion of the tongue to one side or the other. Its easily punctured by sharp canine teeth and works better with a extra durable ball, just like the above rubber ones from the same brand. This launcher really is electrical twine powered primarily. For those that do decide to place batteries in it, the cord comes indifferent so its not in the best way. This can have an effect on how far the ball is thrown after heavy use.. Superman may be faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but tigers can hold their own when it comes to heightened senses and amazing abilities. Their most developed sense is hearing, but they have excellent binocular and color vision, including the ability to see six times greater at night than a human can. In the sound department, though they dont purr due to a modification of their larynx. They do, however, have a mighty roar that can be heard as far as two miles away!. Thats a pretty mighty bark, but in this case, its not worse than their bite - a tigers canine tooth can grow up to three inches, which is about the length of your middle finger. But with 30 of those suckers in its mouth, dont be flipping the bird to this predator anytime soon. A chomp of a tigers jaws can generate pressures of up to 10,000 pounds per square inch, which is enough to crunch through the vertebrae of any creature on the earth!. ...

Gorillas often have a lot of fat around their heads and neck. It makes their heads look huge. Especially the big fat silverbacks. They are very hairy for an animal from a hot climate. From what Ive seen, it can only be a Gorilla. If there is another animal with the huge Deltoids and same shoulder structure then post a photo of it. As far as i know, only primates have arms that attach on the SIDE of the body giving it width and prominence. Bears, dogs etc all have arms that attach on the FRONT of the body. Gorillas do have huge canine teeth. We dont even know if that portion of the tape is real or fake. So at this point Im 99.99% sure its a Gorilla. The other one you saw is most likely a primate.
