The aim of this study was to identify a model of cephalometric variables for early diagnosis of the displacement of upper permanent canine and early prognosis of upper canine impaction. Posteroanterior (PA) cephalograms of 43 subjects (22 males and 21 females) with different types of malocclusions in the mixed dentition were analyzed at the time of first observation (mean age 8 years and 5 ± 9 months). All subjects were reevaluated at the mean age of 14.3 years. At this time the sample was divided into 2 groups according to the presence of canine impaction: nonimpacted canine group (31 subjects) and impacted canine group (12 subjects). The objective of this study is to explore differences in crown-to-root angulation between lateral incisors adjacent to palatally impacted canines (PICs) and lateral incisors adjacent to normally erupted canines (NECs). Orthodontic records of 100 subjects (51 with PICs and 49 with NECs) were reviewed. Crown-to-root angulations of all lateral incisors were measured manually on the final panoramic radiographs. Also, three experienced orthodontists were asked to visually inspect the morphology of the lateral incisors on the panoramic radiographs. A mixed model was used to test the difference in crown-to-root angulation of the lateral incisor between the experimental and the control groups. The association between the examiners observations and the presence of a canine impaction was assessed by means of a chi-square test. It had been noticed that fewer canines appeared to be impacted amongst patients who had been treated by orthotropics®, a form of treatment which involves proclining the incisors and expanding the maxilla. The objective was to compare the influence of Orthotropics on the ratio of impacted canines with matched averages from other populations. Methodology: Records over a five year period were taken from a practice specialising in Orthotropics. An audit of the incidence of impacted canines was taken and compared with average frequencies. In the present study, different retromolar space analyses were evaluated to compare the correlation of the space derived from these methods with the mesio-distal width of the MTM. In the first investigated method in which the distance between the distal surface of second molar to the line tangent to the most concave point on the anterior border of ramus was measured, the mean distance in patients with erupted MTM was 13.6 and 15.3 mm in females and males respectively. These results meet the Quiroz and Palma suggestion that this distance should be more than 14 mm (15).. In the next method, the distance between the distal surface of second molar to the anterior aspect of ramus along the functional occlusal plane was measured.
