From another perspective, the enacted curriculum engages with the elements of curriculum as distinct and isolated components. Graham-Jolly (2012:249) describes this stance as a "narrow" curriculum perspective in which curriculum is viewed as a policy artefact to be "examined" or measured. Terminology used to describe or define curriculum includes: the explicit curriculum, the formal curriculum, the syllabus and the subjects taught (Jacobs, Vakalisa & Gawe, 2011; Wilson, 2005). Within this line of thinking, curriculum is a policy artefact to be implemented at micro (classroom) level. It is equated with the subjects and content that appear in written documents issued on a meso (school) and macro (government) level. Curriculum as a policy artefact rejects the idea that "experiences are part of the curriculum" (Jacobs et al., 2011:32).. For example, a thesis that explores curriculum as a technical product might focus on the curriculum content on Human Immunosuppressive Virus (HIV)/Acquired ...

Our curriculum improved EBM knowledge and skills in trainees and has the potential to be used widely in other neonatal-perinatal medicine programs in the country. This condensed and focused curriculum can be easily adapted to other medical or surgical specialties. The adaptation of educational curricula to the subspecialty context is essential to improve application of the EBM concepts at the bedside. We are not aware of another specialty-adapted Fresno test for the assessment of learners.. The ACGME lists EBM as a core competency, which made us review EBM teaching in our fellowship program in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Prior to this course, the only formal but limited exposure to the concepts of EBM in our section was the journal club, presented once a month, where trainees appraised an article of current relevance and importance. However, further focused education on EBM was necessary, as indicated by our needs assessment. Our short curriculum on EBM significantly improved many aspects of ...

Because of the potential long-term benefits for the public and increasing prevalence of citizen science in scientific research, I am passionate about this research and communicating the findings of this work to fellow scientists. As a part of my research, I have found that certain aspects of citizen science program design and rhetoric significantly influences participant trust and views of science as well as their desire to engage in future citizen science programs. While these results seem intuitive, there has been little work done so far to establish how scientists should design these programs. From my experience in researching citizen science, I have found that scientists and practitioners wishing to develop a citizen science program should engage with theory from psychology, sociology, and communication studies to improve long-term outcomes for their participants. Because many practitioners may be hesitant to dive into these disciplinary areas because it is outside of their areas of ...

Over the past two decades, several new K-12 mathematics curricula have been developed. The question asked by many researchers, administrators, and policy-makers is: Do these materials work? This question has led to research on curricular effectiveness and, more specifically, on teachers' implementations of the curricula. Teachers often transform curricula into a form completely different from the authors' original intentions. One possible explanation for this transformation is teachers' conceptions. To address these issues, the purpose of this study is to examine teachers' implementation of a mathematical decision-making [MDM] curriculum and how their conceptions influence this implementation. To evaluate the implementation of this curriculum, a mixed methods study was employed. First, observations and teacher logs were used to examine teachers' implementation of the curriculum. Second, interviews and surveys were utilized to study teachers'

The aim is to provide a framework for training and lifelong learning in cardiology and its sub-specialties. Curricula structures are key in the development of the educational offer, along with needs assessment and gap analysis, to ensure ...

A secondary-level zebrafish science education curriculum was designed and implemented with the Upward Bound Math Science program at the University of Maine in the summer of 2003. The six-week curriculum was designed to increase student scientific literacy in a program that integrates math and science education using inquiry- based methods. Scientific literacy is defined as knowledge of the nature of science, its concepts, and its human context: "A scientifically literate person is one who not only possesses a knowledge about these various aspects of science but also makes use of them in his or her ethical decision making and social participation in civic life" (NBPTS, 1997/2001). The zebrafish, Danio rerio, was chosen because it is a model organism in modern professional biological research. The zebrafish curriculum focused on biological development as a process that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, and the zebrafish development time of approximately 72 hours made it ...
Since Trinity School believes that the student is the primary agent of his or her education, the sixth- through eighth-grade science program promotes active engagement with the physical world. In addition to classroom learning, the students spend a large portion of class time outdoors, exploring the environment in and around campus. In ninth grade Trinity students study topics in biology, moving from simple structures (organic ...
Historically, specialized schools for the blind were the only options for educational programming available to students with visual impairments. Throughout the 19th century and into the mid-20th century, the instruction in specialized schools consisted primarily of the core curriculum or academic areas (Zebehazy & Whitten, 1998). Current research suggests that specialized schools should provide instruction in both academic and specialized skill areas. The eight specialized skill areas identified within the expanded core curriculum are compensatory academics, social development, recreation and leisure, independent living skills, orientation and mobility, technology, career development, and visual efficiency (Hatlen, 1996). Sighted individuals learn these life skills incidentally and through modeling, but students who are blind or visually impaired have little or no opportunity to acquire them through that kind of learning. This study examined whether specialized schools for

The thesis deals with how technology as a school subject is presented to the pupils in the Swedish compulsory school at junior high school level. The main focus is on how teachers work with the subject matter in teaching, which is on the level of the enacted curriculum. The official documents established by the national school authorities, the intended curriculum, and the hidden curriculum are both of special interest in the study. The hidden curriculum refers to possible, but not intended consequences of the enacted curriculum for pupils understanding of technology as a school subject. The empirical analysis of the study is based on a narrative analysis on the one hand and the variation theory on the other. The empirical data collection consists of data from: (a) interviews with five teachers and (b) a series of classroom observations, covering an entire section of each teachers course of the subject matter.. The data from the interviews with these teachers indicated that they understood the ...

I found your July 27, 1983, special report on mathematics and science education to be of great interest. Although I am not now directly concerned with precollegiate science education, I was involved at one time when I served as director of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (bscs), a group that selected and edited programs for science curricula. From that vantage point, I would like to demur from the observations in the article, To Democratize Science: Curricula for Citizens. You write that the ... curriculum materials ... developed in the 1960s ... deliberately avoided applied science. In support of that position, you quote Paul deHart Hurd as saying that the curriculum designers were 100 percent opposed to the notion of applications and Robert Yager, who says, All the mainline curriculum efforts got rid of applications.

Downloadable! The impact of class size on student achievement remains a thorny question for educational decision makers. Meta-analyses of empirical studies emphasise the absence of class-size effects but detractors have argued against such pessimistic conclusions because many of the underlying studies have not paid attention to the endogeneity of class-size. This paper uses a stringent method to address the endogeneity problem using TIMSS data on 45 countries. We measure the class size effect by relating the difference in a students achievement across subjects to the difference in his/her class-size across subjects. This (subject-differenced) within-pupil achievement production function avoids the problem of the non-random matching of children to specific schools, and to classes within schools. The results show a statistically significant effect of class size for 16 countries but in only 10 of them is the effect negative, and the effect size is very small in most cases. Several robustness tests are

Harvard College dean Benedict H. Gross, Leverett professor of mathematics, left his decanal post on August 31. He was appointed dean for undergraduate education in 2002, and then dean of the College in mid 2003, when the positions were combined, ostensibly to unify the oversight of students academic, extracurricular, and residential life as the review of the undergraduate curriculum began. With the new course framework enacted (see "College Curriculum Change Completed [5]," July-August, page 64), and implementation set to begin, Gross fulfilled his expressed wish to limit his administrative duties to five years. Along with changes in academic life (encouraging study abroad, deferred concentration choice, enhanced advising, and other measures, plus the new general-education program), Grosss tenure saw significant investment in facilities: a Lamont Library café, the new pub in Memorial Halls basement, new dance facilities, the renovation of Hilles Library to make offices for student ...

Another good reason why we should support K- 12 is that the graduates of this program will be more prepared to enter the labor force. As we all noticed, high school graduates of the current curriculum are not yet employable for the reason that they are not yet competent and well - equipped with the skills needed in the workplaces. In addition, most high school graduates are not yet reaching the legal age of 18. With the new curriculum, senior high school students can choose a field that they are good at and that they are interested in. As a result, they will be equipped with the skills needed for a specific job even without a college degree. At the age of 18, the age when they graduate from high school, they will be employable and competitive already. Thus, adding up to the nations manpower ...

The University places a high priority on approaches to learning and teaching that enhance the student experience. Feedback is sought from students in a variety of ways including on-going engagement with staff, the use of online discussion boards and the use of Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) surveys as well as GOS surveys and Program reviews.. SELTs are an important source of information to inform individual teaching practice, decisions about teaching duties, and course and program curriculum design. They enable the University to assess how effectively its learning environments and teaching practices facilitate student engagement and learning outcomes. Under the current SELT Policy (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/101/) course SELTs are mandated and must be conducted at the conclusion of each term/semester/trimester for every course offering. Feedback on issues raised through course SELT surveys is made available to enrolled students through various resources (e.g. MyUni). ...
If we look at this stanza, there is nothing religious about it. Ethical values are something very much in us; we only need to awaken it through education and practice. Educated people should be made aware of this ethical mind to stir the positive potential within them to look beyond their individual interest and needs. In the good old days, we heard folk stories from our parents. Most of these ancient tales contain strong moral messages which we as children held dear to our heart. These days, we dont have time for folk tales. I see these moral and ethical values as the Buddha nature within us that can be activated through proper education and training. So, we need to educate our youngsters in conquering the negative emotions and activating the ethical values within them. This will greatly enhance the human value. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has made promotion of human value as one of the three important commitments in his life. Compassion is one of the core aspects of human values. Compassion ...
In a medical curriculum often a discrepancy exists between the preaching and practice of good clinical behaviour. For example, whereas training of communication skills is focused nowadays on patient-centredness, this is not always observed in clinical practice on a ward or in an outpatient clinic. Since students in their desire to become professionals are very sensitive to clinical experiences and examples, this discrepancy and inconsistency in the curriculum can have a detrimental impact on their attitudes and behavior. Role models are powerful in imparting professional values, attitudes, and behaviors in medical education. Positive role-models are a very powerful means of illustrating theoretical issues in clinical practice. However, role-models can also broadcast implicit values that interfere with the explicit values in the curriculum about professional behavior. Students, who are not always able to distinguish between positive and negative examples, can easily become receptive to negative ...

It has been argued that medical education lacks a specific focus on scientific skills and competencies. A recently developed compulsory introductory track on the basic principles of science in medicine was integrated into the medical curriculum at the University Medical Center in Hamburg, Germany. The curriculum of the two-week track included six lectures and six classes. All first term students of medicine participated on a mandatory basis. Data on student satisfaction were obtained in an online evaluation process. Content of the classes was reading and critical examination of scientific papers, searching and citing literature, discussion of ethical aspects in medical science and the presentation of scientific results. Lectures were held on the basic principles of the research process, types of epidemiological studies, ethical aspects in medical science and examples of scientific research in medicine. Evaluation showed high overall satisfaction among students. Our experiences and students evaluation
