From another perspective, the enacted curriculum engages with the elements of curriculum as distinct and isolated components. Graham-Jolly (2012:249) describes this stance as a narrow curriculum perspective in which curriculum is viewed as a policy artefact to be examined or measured. Terminology used to describe or define curriculum includes: the explicit curriculum, the formal curriculum, the syllabus and the subjects taught (Jacobs, Vakalisa & Gawe, 2011; Wilson, 2005). Within this line of thinking, curriculum is a policy artefact to be implemented at micro (classroom) level. It is equated with the subjects and content that appear in written documents issued on a meso (school) and macro (government) level. Curriculum as a policy artefact rejects the idea that experiences are part of the curriculum (Jacobs et al., 2011:32).. For example, a thesis that explores curriculum as a technical product might focus on the curriculum content on Human Immunosuppressive Virus (HIV)/Acquired ...

Hayden noted that the impact of mental health issues goes beyond the student and significantly affects the teachers, classrooms, school staff, students, and their families and communities. Research shows that schools that promote mental health awareness report higher academic achievement, lower absenteeism, and fewer behavior problems. Identifying issues early is key to improving outcomes for students, families, schools, and communities. The toolkit will be a valuable asset in identifying and helping our students, he said.. Wisconsins Toolkit for Mental Health in Schools includes an Issues in Mental Health/Mental Illness Awareness curriculum. The curriculum helps eighth- through 10th-grade students learn to deal with friends who may have mental health problems and develop skills to help build a mentally healthy school. The curriculum provides a set of skill-building lessons that teach students to understand mental illnesses as treatable health conditions without accepting myths about people ...
Our curriculum improved EBM knowledge and skills in trainees and has the potential to be used widely in other neonatal-perinatal medicine programs in the country. This condensed and focused curriculum can be easily adapted to other medical or surgical specialties. The adaptation of educational curricula to the subspecialty context is essential to improve application of the EBM concepts at the bedside. We are not aware of another specialty-adapted Fresno test for the assessment of learners.. The ACGME lists EBM as a core competency, which made us review EBM teaching in our fellowship program in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Prior to this course, the only formal but limited exposure to the concepts of EBM in our section was the journal club, presented once a month, where trainees appraised an article of current relevance and importance. However, further focused education on EBM was necessary, as indicated by our needs assessment. Our short curriculum on EBM significantly improved many aspects of ...

UPDATE The Australian Standing Council for School Education and Early Childhood, a body comprising the nations education ministers, has shelved the nations first Digital Technologies curriculum just weeks before it was due to be signed off.. The Register has been told that at a meeting on 29 November 2013, recorded in this communiqué it was agreed ACARA had developed the curriculum according to the design specifications it has in place, it was not agreed to endorse the curriculum as final, given that the Australian Government is preparing to undertake a Review of the Australian Curriculum.. Because of the potential long-term benefits for the public and increasing prevalence of citizen science in scientific research, I am passionate about this research and communicating the findings of this work to fellow scientists. As a part of my research, I have found that certain aspects of citizen science program design and rhetoric significantly influences participant trust and views of science as well as their desire to engage in future citizen science programs. While these results seem intuitive, there has been little work done so far to establish how scientists should design these programs. From my experience in researching citizen science, I have found that scientists and practitioners wishing to develop a citizen science program should engage with theory from psychology, sociology, and communication studies to improve long-term outcomes for their participants. Because many practitioners may be hesitant to dive into these disciplinary areas because it is outside of their areas of ...

Over the past two decades, several new K-12 mathematics curricula have been developed. The question asked by many researchers, administrators, and policy-makers is: Do these materials work? This question has led to research on curricular effectiveness and, more specifically, on teachers' implementations of the curricula. Teachers often transform curricula into a form completely different from the authors' original intentions. One possible explanation for this transformation is teachers' conceptions. To address these issues, the purpose of this study is to examine teachers' implementation of a mathematical decision-making [MDM] curriculum and how their conceptions influence this implementation. To evaluate the implementation of this curriculum, a mixed methods study was employed. First, observations and teacher logs were used to examine teachers' implementation of the curriculum. Second, interviews and surveys were utilized to study teachers'

Both sex--the biologic aspects of being female or male--and gender--the cultural roles and meanings ascribed to each sex--are determinants of health. Medical education, research and practice have all suffered from a lack of attention to gender and a limited awareness of the effects of the sex-role stereotypes prevalent in our society. The Womens Health Interschool Curriculum Committee of Ontario has developed criteria for assessing the gender sensitivity of medical curricula. In this article, the effects of medicines historical blindness to gender are explored, as are practical approaches to creating curricula whose content, language and process are gender-sensitive. Specific areas addressed include ensuring that women and men are equally represented, when appropriate, that men are not portrayed as the prototype of normal (and women as deviant), that language is inclusive and that womens health and illness are not limited to reproductive function. By eliminating or at least addressing the ...
For some years now, the ESC has been striving to ensure coherence and cohesion within cardiovascular medicine, as well as to keep ahead of the game with new developments in this very dynamic field of medicine. In this effort, the development of syllabi and curricula has been a means to document and structure the field of cardiology. At the ESC, curricula are developed in a specific manner. The aim is to provide a framework for training and lifelong learning in cardiology and its sub-specialties. Beyond the production of syllabi that provide the list of topic areas included in a speciality, curricula describe characteristics and requirements for entering training in cardiology and/or sub-specialty training, as well as requirements for training centres, trainers and importantly a clear description of the assessment modalities throughout the training period and beyond.. Curricula structures are key in the development of the educational offer, along with needs assessment and gap analysis, to ensure ...

This program is a collaboration between graduate student instructors and science educators from one local public high school. Each semester, approximately 65 secondary STEM students, 4 educators, 15 graduate student instructors, and 2 faculty members are involved in Discovery. Small student groups work in a capstone format, incorporating iterative design principles and the scientific method to address thematically-related but subject-specific research projects that satisfy curriculum requirements. Educators assign 10-15% of semester course grades to deliverables and quantitatively assess student comprehension. The semester culminates in a final symposium where students present their findings in scientific poster format. Discovery is unique in its delivery of iterative design to a class cohort accompanied by their educator and carries the benefit of removing socio-economic barriers to student learning and success. High school educators further benefit through co-instruction with graduate ...

A secondary-level zebrafish science education curriculum was designed and implemented with the Upward Bound Math Science program at the University of Maine in the summer of 2003. The six-week curriculum was designed to increase student scientific literacy in a program that integrates math and science education using inquiry- based methods. Scientific literacy is defined as knowledge of the nature of science, its concepts, and its human context: A scientifically literate person is one who not only possesses a knowledge about these various aspects of science but also makes use of them in his or her ethical decision making and social participation in civic life (NBPTS, 1997/2001). The zebrafish, Danio rerio, was chosen because it is a model organism in modern professional biological research. The zebrafish curriculum focused on biological development as a process that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, and the zebrafish development time of approximately 72 hours made it ...
Since Trinity School believes that the student is the primary agent of his or her education, the sixth- through eighth-grade science program promotes active engagement with the physical world. In addition to classroom learning, the students spend a large portion of class time outdoors, exploring the environment in and around campus. The primary goals of the seventh- through eighth-grade science curriculum is the development of a vibrant sense of wonder about the natural world and of basic analytical skills needed for a deeper understanding of it. Students completing the sixth- through eighth-grade curriculum learn to appreciate of the complexity of the physical world and develop basic skills to begin to understand and model it. During grades nine through twelve the students understanding of nature is enhanced by gathering their observations under a framework of scientific models, laws and theories. In ninth grade Trinity students study topics in biology, moving from simple structures (organic ...
Historically, specialized schools for the blind were the only options for educational programming available to students with visual impairments. Throughout the 19th century and into the mid-20th century, the instruction in specialized schools consisted primarily of the core curriculum or academic areas (Zebehazy & Whitten, 1998). Current research suggests that specialized schools should provide instruction in both academic and specialized skill areas. The eight specialized skill areas identified within the expanded core curriculum are compensatory academics, social development, recreation and leisure, independent living skills, orientation and mobility, technology, career development, and visual efficiency (Hatlen, 1996). Sighted individuals learn these life skills incidentally and through modeling, but students who are blind or visually impaired have little or no opportunity to acquire them through that kind of learning. This study examined whether specialized schools for

The thesis deals with how technology as a school subject is presented to the pupils in the Swedish compulsory school at junior high school level. The main focus is on how teachers work with the subject matter in teaching, which is on the level of the enacted curriculum. The official documents established by the national school authorities, the intended curriculum, and the hidden curriculum are both of special interest in the study. The hidden curriculum refers to possible, but not intended consequences of the enacted curriculum for pupils understanding of technology as a school subject. The empirical analysis of the study is based on a narrative analysis on the one hand and the variation theory on the other. The empirical data collection consists of data from: (a) interviews with five teachers and (b) a series of classroom observations, covering an entire section of each teachers course of the subject matter.. The data from the interviews with these teachers indicated that they understood the ...

Working with and against Shared Curricula: Perspectives from College Writing Teachers and Administrators explores the complexities surrounding the expanding use of shared curricula-syllabi and assignments intended to work universally, for all teachers and all students within a given writing program. Chapters in this collection offer the experiential accounts and research-based arguments needed to prepare teachers and administrators to respond to calls to scale up writing programs for delivery by contingent instructors, in online courses, or at distant sites. Speaking from a variety of perspectives and institutional locations, these authors grapple with questions increasingly common in writing programs: In what ways do shared curricula forward noble goals, such as reducing workload for teachers or ensuring an equitable educational experience for all?; In what ways do shared curricula undermine teacher efficacy and student learning?; When syllabi and assignments are exported from one location to ...
