From another perspective, the enacted curriculum engages with the elements of curriculum as distinct and isolated components. Graham-Jolly (2012:249) describes this stance as a narrow curriculum perspective in which curriculum is viewed as a policy artefact to be examined or measured. Terminology used to describe or define curriculum includes: the explicit curriculum, the formal curriculum, the syllabus and the subjects taught (Jacobs, Vakalisa & Gawe, 2011; Wilson, 2005). Within this line of thinking, curriculum is a policy artefact to be implemented at micro (classroom) level. It is equated with the subjects and content that appear in written documents issued on a meso (school) and macro (government) level. Curriculum as a policy artefact rejects the idea that experiences are part of the curriculum (Jacobs et al., 2011:32).. For example, a thesis that explores curriculum as a technical product might focus on the curriculum content on Human Immunosuppressive Virus (HIV)/Acquired ...

The New Zealand Curriculum is a clear statement of what we deem important in education. It presents a vision of our young people as confident, creative, connected, and actively involved lifelong learners and includes a clear set of principles on which to base local curriculum decision making.. Your local curriculum is the way that you bring The New Zealand Curriculum to life at your school. Designing your local curriculum involves making decisions about how to give effect to the national curriculum in ways that best address the particular needs, interests, and circumstances of your students and community.. One way to localise your curriculum is to consider your wider community as your classroom and connect your students to the local learning opportunities that are available. Learning locally is a strategy available at every school. Opportunities vary depending on a schools location but there are rich opportunities waiting outside every classroom door. ...

Our curriculum improved EBM knowledge and skills in trainees and has the potential to be used widely in other neonatal-perinatal medicine programs in the country. This condensed and focused curriculum can be easily adapted to other medical or surgical specialties. The adaptation of educational curricula to the subspecialty context is essential to improve application of the EBM concepts at the bedside. We are not aware of another specialty-adapted Fresno test for the assessment of learners.. The ACGME lists EBM as a core competency, which made us review EBM teaching in our fellowship program in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Prior to this course, the only formal but limited exposure to the concepts of EBM in our section was the journal club, presented once a month, where trainees appraised an article of current relevance and importance. However, further focused education on EBM was necessary, as indicated by our needs assessment. Our short curriculum on EBM significantly improved many aspects of ...

Because of the potential long-term benefits for the public and increasing prevalence of citizen science in scientific research, I am passionate about this research and communicating the findings of this work to fellow scientists. As a part of my research, I have found that certain aspects of citizen science program design and rhetoric significantly influences participant trust and views of science as well as their desire to engage in future citizen science programs. While these results seem intuitive, there has been little work done so far to establish how scientists should design these programs. From my experience in researching citizen science, I have found that scientists and practitioners wishing to develop a citizen science program should engage with theory from psychology, sociology, and communication studies to improve long-term outcomes for their participants. Because many practitioners may be hesitant to dive into these disciplinary areas because it is outside of their areas of ...

To implement the curriculum, all teachers have good subject knowledge and are supported to maintain and improve this knowledge through training, observing best practices and undertaking relevant research. During lessons, appropriate use of teacher questioning, modelling and explanations are all used and there is an expectation that all children will develop resilience and accept responsibility for their own learning and work independently. The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and each unit is mapped against the progression of skills to ensure that learners develop detailed knowledge and skills across the full breadth of the curriculum through engaging and age-appropriate curriculum content. Lessons incorporate examples; retrieval practice and, over time, revisit teaching and knowledge skills. Steps to success help teachers to break down learning into manageable chunks to ensure all children can access learning. We believe that inclusive education ...

Over the past two decades, several new K-12 mathematics curricula have been developed. The question asked by many researchers, administrators, and policy-makers is: Do these materials work? This question has led to research on curricular effectiveness and, more specifically, on teachers' implementations of the curricula. Teachers often transform curricula into a form completely different from the authors' original intentions. One possible explanation for this transformation is teachers' conceptions. To address these issues, the purpose of this study is to examine teachers' implementation of a mathematical decision-making [MDM] curriculum and how their conceptions influence this implementation. To evaluate the implementation of this curriculum, a mixed methods study was employed. First, observations and teacher logs were used to examine teachers' implementation of the curriculum. Second, interviews and surveys were utilized to study teachers'

Both sex--the biologic aspects of being female or male--and gender--the cultural roles and meanings ascribed to each sex--are determinants of health. Medical education, research and practice have all suffered from a lack of attention to gender and a limited awareness of the effects of the sex-role stereotypes prevalent in our society. The Womens Health Interschool Curriculum Committee of Ontario has developed criteria for assessing the gender sensitivity of medical curricula. In this article, the effects of medicines historical blindness to gender are explored, as are practical approaches to creating curricula whose content, language and process are gender-sensitive. Specific areas addressed include ensuring that women and men are equally represented, when appropriate, that men are not portrayed as the prototype of normal (and women as deviant), that language is inclusive and that womens health and illness are not limited to reproductive function. By eliminating or at least addressing the ...
A recent study by TODAY found at least 20 U.S. states currently include mental health in their general K-12 health education standards, nine of which are written into curriculum by law. In addition, three more states have proposed new legislation to include this new requirement.
For some years now, the ESC has been striving to ensure coherence and cohesion within cardiovascular medicine, as well as to keep ahead of the game with new developments in this very dynamic field of medicine. In this effort, the development of syllabi and curricula has been a means to document and structure the field of cardiology. At the ESC, curricula are developed in a specific manner. The aim is to provide a framework for training and lifelong learning in cardiology and its sub-specialties. Beyond the production of syllabi that provide the list of topic areas included in a speciality, curricula describe characteristics and requirements for entering training in cardiology and/or sub-specialty training, as well as requirements for training centres, trainers and importantly a clear description of the assessment modalities throughout the training period and beyond.. Curricula structures are key in the development of the educational offer, along with needs assessment and gap analysis, to ensure ...

This program is a collaboration between graduate student instructors and science educators from one local public high school. Each semester, approximately 65 secondary STEM students, 4 educators, 15 graduate student instructors, and 2 faculty members are involved in Discovery. Small student groups work in a capstone format, incorporating iterative design principles and the scientific method to address thematically-related but subject-specific research projects that satisfy curriculum requirements. Educators assign 10-15% of semester course grades to deliverables and quantitatively assess student comprehension. The semester culminates in a final symposium where students present their findings in scientific poster format. Discovery is unique in its delivery of iterative design to a class cohort accompanied by their educator and carries the benefit of removing socio-economic barriers to student learning and success. High school educators further benefit through co-instruction with graduate ...

A secondary-level zebrafish science education curriculum was designed and implemented with the Upward Bound Math Science program at the University of Maine in the summer of 2003. The six-week curriculum was designed to increase student scientific literacy in a program that integrates math and science education using inquiry- based methods. Scientific literacy is defined as knowledge of the nature of science, its concepts, and its human context: A scientifically literate person is one who not only possesses a knowledge about these various aspects of science but also makes use of them in his or her ethical decision making and social participation in civic life (NBPTS, 1997/2001). The zebrafish, Danio rerio, was chosen because it is a model organism in modern professional biological research. The zebrafish curriculum focused on biological development as a process that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, and the zebrafish development time of approximately 72 hours made it ...
The CFSC has implemented the Creative Curriculum since 1996 in the Morning and Afternoon Half-Day Preschool Classrooms. The Creative Curriculum offers teachers the guidance, support, and freedom to be creative and responsive to the children. Because children learn from their daily interactions with the environment, a carefully organized and rich environment is the foundation for the Creative Curriculum. Central to the use of the environment is an understanding of the potential of various materials to enhance learning and teaching, as well as knowledge of how these materials meet the developmental needs of young children. By focusing on the developmental progress of each child, the Creative Curriculum offers an ideal setting for all children, including those with disabilities.. The Creative Curriculum focuses on interest areas. It describes in detail, what and how children learn, and the teachers role in using each of the following interest areas to support childrens development:. ...

Since Trinity School believes that the student is the primary agent of his or her education, the sixth- through eighth-grade science program promotes active engagement with the physical world. In addition to classroom learning, the students spend a large portion of class time outdoors, exploring the environment in and around campus. Historically, specialized schools for the blind were the only options for educational programming available to students with visual impairments. Throughout the 19th century and into the mid-20th century, the instruction in specialized schools consisted primarily of the core curriculum or academic areas (Zebehazy & Whitten, 1998). Current research suggests that specialized schools should provide instruction in both academic and specialized skill areas. The eight specialized skill areas identified within the expanded core curriculum are compensatory academics, social development, recreation and leisure, independent living skills, orientation and mobility, technology, career development, and visual efficiency (Hatlen, 1996). Sighted individuals learn these life skills incidentally and through modeling, but students who are blind or visually impaired have little or no opportunity to acquire them through that kind of learning. This study examined whether specialized schools for

In my two earlier posts about the history undergraduate curriculum, Ive taken up the issue of what is or should be required of history students, and how digital media might more usefully be incorporated into their educational experience. Today I want to look at a third issue in the teaching of history to undergraduates-the general lack of what we might call real world experiences for history majors that are intrinsic to the curriculum.. The most obvious way that history majors can gain this sort of real world experience is through internships, and hundreds of history departments around the country (and the world I suspect) offer their students the opportunity to earn credits through internships. A much smaller number of departments actually require their students (who arent enrolled in a public history track-which often requires and internship) to participate in some sort of internship in order to graduate (see, for example, the catalogs of California State-Sacramento and Longwood ...

Evidence shows that the demand for palliative and end-of-life care is increasing in healthcare, yet nurses lack the proper education to provide this care with confidence and competence. Before educational practices are modified, a method is needed to assess current palliative and end-of-life care education. This dissertation study described a process for assessing a baccalaureate curriculum for its palliative and end-of-life care content integration, using an adapted theoretical framework, the Palliative Care Curriculum Evaluation Model. The End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Core Curriculum was decomposed to identify all its key elements. Faculty members teaching in a baccalaureate nursing program were surveyed to identify strategies used and courses within which the ELNEC Core Curriculum content was taught. Survey responses from students enrolled in required nursing-specific courses within the curriculum at two time points within the semester were analyzed to assess changes in ...
Between December 2014 and April 2015, Transaid, working closely with key stakeholders in Tanzania, have developed an appropriate training curriculum for motorcycle taxi riders (for the full curriculum see annex A). This AFCAP‐funded programme began by gathering and assessing any existing motorcycle training curricula to identify any gaps that need to be addressed. It was vital that the development of the training curriculum had strong support from the relevant training schools and regulatory authorities as well as feeding in valuable input from the motorcycle taxi riders themselves and addressing the needs of passengers. To ensure this key stakeholder input and support, SUMATRA and the Traffic Police (see Annex B for letter of support) were engaged from the very start and the project team conducted interviews with Driving Schools and regulatory authorities. A complicated pattern of the relationship between student and teacher variables (e.g., suppression, correction of distortion) was found along with interaction between these variables and environmental factors. These findings also suggest future practices and research that ...
Backwards course design is a planning framework that enables the faculty member to hone in on overall learning objectives. Course design involves starting from what we want our students to know and be able to do at the end of a semester. The intended learning outcomes guide the process of course design. They include measurable statements of what students should know at the end of the course. These objectives are then the road map for the syllabus, whereby learning objectives are aligned with assignments and course content, considering how the course fits into the relevant program(s), and the rigor of the course relative to the preparation of the students enrolled. Strong course organization that will enhance teaching and student learning.. The curricular structure developed in your syllabus is something that needs to be put into action through deliberate pedagogy, methods of teaching, and the integration of technology where appropriate. This is as important for interdisciplinary electives as it ...

Ultrasound is an emerging teaching tool in the undergraduate medical education to facilitate pre-clinical teaching on anatomy and physiology, and adjunct in clinical skills training. And which ones are any good?. Massachusetts teachers can now turn to the K-12 Computer Science Curriculum Guide for a comprehensive way to identify high-quality resources for their classrooms. The newly published guide was created by the Massachusetts Computing Attainment Network (MassCAN), a public-private initiative headquartered at EDC.. A large body of Catherine Enniss work is focused on physical education curriculum development. Her approach to curriculum development is unique in that it is completely based on research evidence. The curricula she developed have been field-tested and the completed curriculum is supported with solid research evidence to demonstrate its efficacy in student learning and teacher ease of use. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview and explore opportunities to continue large-scale physical education curriculum intervention studies. The authors first provide a brief review of previous intervention studies by summarizing the findings and discussing implications. They then discuss potential future intervention studies by presenting several topics that are being explored by researchers in current interventions. Finally, they focus on methodology issues involved in designing effective curriculum intervention studies with the idea of adaptive designs as variations of the randomized clinical ...
